I've been wanting to try Agami for the longest time, and the experience and quality was better than I had anticipated.
Our server was great; he was very knowledgable of the menu, conversational, and made plenty of recommendations.
Between my boyfriend and I, we split the following, which was a filling amount for 2.
Sake Flight - Glad we tried this. Our server explained the differences in the sake and made it a good learning experience.
Miso Soup - warm, hearty, no complaints.
Salad - I'm not normally much of a salad person, but this was a nice, lightly dressed salad to start off with. There were some citrusy notes to it, a bit of a crab sauce and seaweed which gave it additional flavor.
Chef's Choice Dinner - 6 pieces of nigiri, 9 pieces of sashimi, and we chose the Sweety Hamachi signature roll
The sashimi was fatty and melted on your tongue. The cuts were on the thicker side which I was a fan of, but my boyfriend would have preferred them thinner. They tasted perfect with just a bit of soy sauce. I think the real highlight of the meal was in the sashimi.
I preferred the sashimi over the nigiri. The nigiri had just a tad bit too much wasabi under each piece of fish but highlighted the fish well, regardlessly.
Albacore bowl - It was like a pico de gallo/ceviche mixture. It was very tasty.
Signature roll: Sweety Hamachi
The descriptions of rolls are extremely tantalizing. The flavors of this roll however, just fell short of its description. I didn't really taste any spice. It was nice to have the refreshing taste of the mango in each bite, but the mango salsa also contained raw onions that had a sharp, strong presence that wasn't as pleasant.
Signature roll: Chicago Bulls
We decided to try this because it was considered the most popular roll. While it was tasty, the cooked components: baked scallop and grilled shrimp really overpowered the roll. It was a tasty bite, but it may have well have been a rice dish with a side of shrimp. This is a great roll to introduce someone to sushi if they are not as familiar with raw fish, but if you prefer more raw elements, several other signature rolls sounded delicious as well.
Signature roll: Tuna Gone Wild
This was my favorite signature roll and very flavorful on its own. The fish was fresh, it was a bit spicy, and the black rice was unique.
Overall, the quality of the fish is pretty good. It's a step up from your every-day go-to city sushi. I think the rolls are just A-okay, but the sashimi/nigiri really hits the nail on the head. I can't tell if it is meant to be a fancy restaurant or not. We came casually dressed. The décor is very all-over the place, but that didn't affect my rating.
