Old Restaurant Signs on Route 1 North of Boston | Eater Boston

"A classic diner recommended for a cup of coffee and a slice of lemon meringue pie, notable for its preservation: it has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and still looks much like it did when it first opened in 1954 (albeit at a different location)." - Terrence Doyle

Google
I had the most amazing experience of the 50’s and 60’s in this Diner. The Food is great, the coffee was fresh and the service was perfect. 10/10

This might be a casual spot for locals, but as travelers from Europe, it felt like a truly authentic American experience. The interior has that classic American diner vibe, filled with casual, local customers. We ordered the vegetarian omelette with white toast, blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, and bottomless coffee. While the omelette wasn’t particularly impressive—the veggies inside were a bit undercooked—the toast was fantastic, especially with the butter that came with it. The blueberry pancakes were the highlight, perfectly balanced in sweetness and complemented by the maple syrup. The menu is quite meat-heavy, so it might not be the best choice for vegetarians or vegans. Lastly, our server was amazing. She didn’t take any notes while we ordered, yet brought everything out perfectly. We’re still in awe—truly a professional!

Google
We love this diner. It’s the classic Massachusetts diner experience — great service, comfort food, tight cozy spaces, solid coffee, and prices that won’t hurt your wallet. The menu is massive, offering all-day breakfast, sandwiches, diner plates, and don’t forget about the pies (seriously, the pies are a must!). The place is small, so be prepared to wait on weekends, but it’s totally worth it. Portions are huge, so you’ll definitely leave full. The food is solid, though I’d recommend sticking to the regular menu instead of the specials. I tried the fried chicken platter from the specials, and it was a bit bland. The mac & cheese was excellent. Oh, and heads up — it’s cash only! But there’s an ATM right next door.

Google
Everything on the menu is great but the pies are awesome. I always get the banana creme pie. Very nostalgic and looks the same as it has since I was a child and went with my parents.

Google
We started with delicious homemade chicken rice soup and ended with yummy to-die-for chocolate cream pie. Our dinners were simple and very good. The waitress was friendly and seemed to know most of her customers.

Google
Great service and great food. We had the Western Omelet sandwich and French fries, and we also bought 2 raspberry turnovers and one apple turnover for a late night snack. And those turnovers were absolutely delicious!!! We love the Agawam Dinner!!

Google
Sadly I think their award winning years are well behind them. The staff was wonderful and the place has real charm

Yelp
This was a great find! The food was amazing. Service was great treated us like old friends. And the place speaks for itself, classic dinner vibes. Will be driving out to eat there again.

Yelp
driving by here and stopped in for the nostalgia. originally i intended on ordering a burger, and i was surprised they serve breakfast all day! i ordered two humongous blueberry pancakes with coffee, my friend ordered the veggie omelette with wheat toast and hash browns, and took a slice of banana crème pie to go. BLUEBERRY PANCAKES + REAL SYRUP 10/10 VEGGIE OMELETTE 8/10 BANANA CRÈME PIE 10/10 came for the nostalgia and left extremely satisfied with the old school diner feel, the quality of food and service! missed the servers name, a lovely blonde woman who was very accommodating. ambiance: 5/5 food: 4.7/5 service: 5/5 agawam diner: 5/5

Yelp
An iconic classic, all-American diner in the North Shore. If you're looking for some down to Earth, classic Americana food, I would recommend coming here. The pancakes were fluffy, and just right. The Vermont maple syrup was the perfect pairing. The service was wonderful, our coffee cups didn't stop flowing. The eggs and toast were also just right.

Yelp
Love Agawam Diner!! Turkey dinner is delicious! Real old fashion diner! Breakfast served all day! Service is great.

Yelp
Went here because heard in the past it was nostalgic and good comfort food .. big big mistake .. the chicken croquettes my wife had was frozen and cold mash potatoes with canned green beans for $14 and I had beef stew which was cold and unappetising plus half the things that were on the menu was sold out by 5:25 at dinner time .. very disappointing because it does have rustic charm but food is almost uneatable so safe your trip for nostalgia because not worth the trip

Yelp
Great food and even better people. I ordered a simple lunch, BLT & fries, the bacon was just right and the fries weren't burnt, WinWin

Yelp
Elaine was so nice if I could go higher with my review I would give it a 5,000 food was great love the shrimp

Yelp
Decent food, four stars. Service took one star off - the waitress gave me two knives and told me in the rudest tone that utensils were already in the bag. And when I asked for napkins she grabbed a handful, handed them to me and walked away. I drove to a park, sat down, realized I didn't have a fork, ate it with two knives like I was using chopsticks... tbh stubbed my tongue once or twice

Yelp
What a great diner! Great food and atmosphere. Food comes out fast and is excellent. Bacon cheeseburger was great and hit the spot. They know how to make crispy bacon properly which many places aren't able to. Meatball sub took top marks with my wife. Fries cooked perfectly. The pies are homemade and out of this world. Coconut cream, chocolate cream and cherry were all top tier. Great coffee. They do diner food and they do it well. Other reviews complain about the food being standard. Really? THATS WHAT DINER FOOD IS!!! If you're looking for filet mignon, then keep driving down to Boston. Atmosphere is cozy and warm in this original diner from 1940. Clean and comfortable. Do yourself a a favor and try this place and you'll be heading there frequently when craving some great comfort food served by nice people. Can't wait to try breakfast, which is served all day BTW.

Yelp
Always enjoy going there. Great service and basic American food at decent price. Don't forget to save room for desert

Yelp
This place is so cool to me. We love diners and diner food. They serve breakfast all day. Today, we both had club sandwiches that came with the best fries! I had a turkey club and my husband had a tuna club. They are also known for their desserts, so I had to try one.... Chocolate cake roll. Omg, it was so good, I ate the whole thing! We come here anytime we come up this way. They are good and their prices are very reasonable.

Susan R.

Yelp
My first time visit was an hour ago. There is plenty of parking around the diner, no need to worry! We all ordered breakfast from sandwiches to chocolate chip pancakes! All were fabulous! I ordered the corned beef hash omelet with cheese! Outstanding!! The home fries were really tasty, too! They were completely cooked all the way through! Pricing was very user friendly and the staff was friendly and accommodating! I will go here again, no question!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was ok. Nothing to write about. I had higher expectations. Pancakes were kind of chalky. Omelet had a weird taste to it.

Yelp
Another classic meal one of my favorite diners with great food, great service and that old school great ambiance! Must try if you like diners the portions are generous and a good value , thank you !

Yelp
Any time I'm out in the Rowley area, usually out riding enjoying the fresh air and beautiful area, and want either breakfast or lunch, the Agawam Diner is the spot. Always have a great meal, service is friendly and quick, and I love the atmosphere of an old diner. Definitely brings back the old days of a great local diner, with all the charm and hospitality. Never been let down!

Eric P.

Yelp
The food is always good and comes out quickly. My problem is that unless the servers know you by name, they will ignore you. Don't expect a great deal of attention but don't treat me like I'm invisible. It does affect the tip. Try to go during off hours and it wasn't very busy.

Yelp
Last time I was there was 65 years ago.used to bug my mom to stop there on our way back to Gloucester.

Yelp
Awesome place if you love a good vintage diner! Nice staff and great food - highly recommend this place!

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Great food, great service, awesome prices and healthy sized portions. 10/10 would recommend.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
Turkey Club is the best! Fried chicken is tasty and not too salty. Wide selection of pies. Everybody likes pie! Oddball business hours. Apart from that, this place rocks! Jason is a good cook!

Yelp
After watching Phantom Gourmet, I was convinced to try this place. This place is a 2 minute drive from me and the parking lot is always filled. We can by Sunday and there was no wait! The food comes out fast and service was prompt. My veggie omelette was delicious and so was my toast. Our bill came to 20 dollars. I will be sure to try the pies next time I go in for dessert.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome comfort food! Coffee is so so good! I had the chicken pot pie and it was delicious. The homemade desserts are great too. I had the grapenut pudding and it was delicious. The staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere takes you back in time. My family loves it here! I highly recommend the Agawam Diner. :)

Theresa C.

Yelp
Get the tuna melt and a slice of pie. Everything is generally good or just fine. Only thing that I ever had that was bad there was the chicken fried steak. Otherwise everything's been good - omelettes, sandwiches, etc.

Laura H.

Yelp
Quick, solid food. The usual breakfast choices, coffee is good. Dinner and lunch will surprise you! Staff is really great, they remember everything are friendly and fast.

Tom H.

Yelp
This is a small place, but very popular, so you can expect to wait at busy times. The service is average, but the food is always good. They are closed on Mondays, and the hours vary depending on the day of the week, so it can be a little confusing.

Yelp
Now is the time to visit the Agawam, bring cash $. Search no more for coffee and pie and classic diner food. Consistently churning out grub for over 50 years. I have been here many times growing up not far from here. "I've been coming (off/on) to the Agawam since I was old enough to drive". Pies come in two crust, one crust, cream pies, fruit pies, apple, blueberry, lemon meringue, Boston Creme which really isn't "pie", cherry, pecan, and anything seasonal. Pies are consistently delicious. Breakfasts, chowders, soups, sandwiches, burgers, dinners, L&O, special plate of the day, seafood. Did I mention the pie? We split a clam plate, which was o.k., have I had better? Yes, but this was good. Service was good. The Agawam is a N. Shore fav., prices are very reasonable, bring CASH.
google avatar

Mack G.

Yelp
Ordered a chocolate cream pie a day before pickup, family loved it, said it was great, price was steep though. 27$ cash only. But I blame it on the economy thnx to shithead joe Biden. TRUMP for president.
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
The service was only exceeded by the Hash. Both were stellar. This will for sure become a go to breakfast place. The coffee was also good and hot. Nice old school diner feel with locals. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Glenn C.

Yelp
We ordered two cheeseburger club sandwiches Togo today the meals were both great, lettuce and tomatoes seemed nice and fresh the fries were good portion was good the burger could be a little bigger, but it was delicious! We will be back

A H.

Yelp
I tend to write reviews of restaurants I like. This is no exception. Love this diner. Is it hip and a gastro experience? NO-it's a diner. Breakfast all day and many choices for lunch and dinner. The club sandwiches are fabulous and I've never had a bad experience. The waitstaff are bend over backwards to get you what you want . The old jukeboxes no longer work-what a blessing!! Hahaha. This is the real thing (as am I).

Yelp
Definitely five star. I've had many times in the past while working in New Hampshire from 95 directly up to Hampton Beach I was working. I work all week and come home on Friday nights to Massachusetts and I will always stop there for dinner the food today tasted just like it did then it really took me back to my memories of when I was much younger 20s. Today we had I had can croquettes homemade mashed potatoes nice dick gravy green beans they were canned which I wasn't impressed with but everything else was phasing then lots of cranberry sauce coffee was good. My other half had a homemade corn beef hash omelette with cheese wheat toast and home fries with onions and coffee it was definitely the best meal I've had in a long time we definitely took over half of each one of them home so I have breakfast for tomorrow or lunch for tomorrow whatever. It definitely took me back to years ago not much is changed except for the waitresses but the price and stuff still look great but didn't have enough room for dessert. Looking forward to going again anyways and Eddie are you stop by yoga up at 4:30 in the morning every day and most days are open till nine 10 o'clock

Yelp
Such a little gem! They make incredible food and the staff is so kind and helpful. They work so hard and truly deliver! The only things I would suggest for them to improve is a few more healthy options. Today, most restaurants offer those low sodium, low fat, gluten free, etc. options and they need to pick up the same thing. Everything is pretty much cooked in lard, tons of oil etc. Definitely a place we will continue to visit.

Yelp
We have moved to New Hampshire and have been to 4 different breakfast and have found the Agawam Diner is so much better. We have been spoiled and so we are willing to drive the 40 minutes on the weekends for there breakfast. No one makes hash as good and there pies are crazy.
google avatar

Matthew A.

Yelp
Returned to the old Agawam after a few years- had breakfast. Had the homemade hash and dropped eggs. YUM! The waitress was super friendly- she told us she had worked there for over 30 years- God bless her! The hash was delish and eggs cooked perfectly. Iced tea was weak. Loved the old charm of this place. Time warp and cash only.

Dan S.

Yelp
For all the rave reviews that this place is a great breakfast place I would simply say it was average. Food was average at best and service was it felt quite slow. Not sure I'd rush to go back. Agawam is clean. I do love a real diner and I most definitely had that charm

Brad A.

Yelp
So good. My only caveat is they are cash only. Try the awesome pies and top-notch homemade diner food. Prices are great and portions are prefect.

Tom H.

Yelp
Breakfast was great, but lunch was not so good. I do recommend this place, if you are in the area.......

Yelp
This is not an upscale dining experience, and no, this is not your average chain restaurant experience either. This is an old diner, as old as they come, and that's what you'll get when you go. Their menu is pretty simple, and growing up I used to grab 2 hot dogs and a side of fries as a dinner. Now that I'm a bit older I grab a turkey club with fries. If you're a frequent visitor the waitress will remember your name and face and you'll get treated like family. New comer? They'll still treat you like family, maybe a cousin instead. No matter what you do, you need to grab a slice of banana cream pie. Sometimes they run out because people will and DO buy full pies when they go. Its not overly sweet, it has great flavor and texture without being overwhelming. They also give you a huge slice. This is my favorite diner currently, so much nostalgia for me and my family!
google avatar

Adam M.

Yelp
I love a good diner. This isn't one. It is a over priced tourist trap of a "old timey" diner. The food is passable, but there is no reason lunch for three people should cost $80 at a diner. The service was slow and the waitstaff acted as if they had better things to do with their time. Now please let me be clear. The food was tasty, but i have had better at a chain. OH! They only take cash, which is very suspicious for a place that overcharges as much as this place does.
google avatar

Micael T.

Yelp
Love their fried chicken sandwich, and I think they have the best fries around! You can't go wrong with the classic cheeseburger and french fry, and all of their desserts are top notch! (baked on premises) I was once sitting at the counter when a guy came in from NH, and bought 6 chocolate eclairs. After he left I asked the waitress what was up with him buying the six eclairs, she said he comes down from New Hampshire, driving quite a distance, just for the chocolate eclairs. I've had the myself, they are amazing, completely stuffed with filling. Cash only here, classic American diner!
google avatar

Keith V.

Yelp
They have the best corned beef hash made with grey corned beef they can be busy but good food

Ben P.

Yelp
Was here for breakfast with a friend of long-standing. Oh, Agawam, Agawam, Agawam what have you done? I think they toast the english muffins and then put them on the roof. They were stone cold! Eggs and bacon were fine, I guess. The coffee is as weak as can be. It is cramped in that joint. Lotsa locals, it seems. Our waitress could not be bothered with us. Granted, when I go out to eat I certainly never expect to put the waitress or waiter in my will, but a little personality would have helped her. I've seen livelier headstones. We waited an eternity for our bill, even though the waitress said "be right back with it" 20 minutes earlier. I said to my friend upon leaving, that they should call this place the AGONY diner. I won't be back and no, the waitress will not be mentioned in my will.

Meghan K.

Yelp
Everything you would hope for, and expect from, a small town diner! The food and service were spectacular!
google avatar

Leigh W.

Yelp
Great diner! You will not be disappointed. Great breakfast. And pie! Expect a bit of a wait. It's that's yummy. Great corned beef hash!
google avatar

Karen 2.

Yelp
For the food I am pretty picky so only rly like the breakfast sandwiches. the coffee is not that good. the ambiance is cool because its an old train.
google avatar

Carol T.

Yelp
I have been coming to the Agawam since I was old enough to drive. The ambiance is that of an authentic 50s diner. This is not a fancy new diner dressed up to look authentic, this is the real deal. The place is actually listed as a historical landmark. Cash is king here, no credit cards accepted Everything is priced very reasonably though. The specials are always awesome. The food is great American comfort food from grilled cheese and tomato soup to meatloaf and mashed. save room for the pie though!! For me it's all about the pie. They are home made there on the premises and they are to die for.
google avatar

Jill G.

Yelp
Crab cakes, meatloaf dinner, chicken pot pie, banana cream pie, coconut cream pie with a takeout of chocolate cream pie for later! YUMMY!!! Waitress was funny, personable and great at her job. If you love diners, or good home cooked food don't miss this place!

Brittany S.

Yelp
Always good food and good service. They have great pie. We regularly eat in or order takeout.
