First-Time Restaurateurs Go Under the Microscope, Plus More Intel | Eater DC

"I'm following career changers Niranjan Sathindran and Srividhya "Sri" Ganesan as they try their hand at the hospitality field by opening South Indian–themed Agni Restaurant and Bar in Sterling, Virginia; the couple's debut restaurant is very much a work in progress, but they already know one thing for sure: "There's not going to be a chicken tikka masala." - Warren Rojas

Google
I have always been a fan of Indian food. Agni here is amazing... I simply make it a point to get one of their lamb dishes every time I stop through here.... Which is several times every few months. The Holiday inn is walking distance, so it makes it either nice to come here for the dinner. The Quality of food and how good it tastes must be praised. The dishes are large, the meat is quality. I absolutely love their lamb dishes... From curry to korma to biryani - chef's kiss. I urge you to order cheese naan. It is one of the better ones I have ever tried anywhere. The atmosphere inside is very quiet. There is not a whole lot of traffic outside, so it is just relaxing to eat inside. I love their bar - good selection on wines. This is a gem

Google
Absolutely amazing 😍 We had vegetable samosas, garlic and cheese naan, chicken and lamb tikki masala. Plenty of vegetarian options as well as a 3 course meal specifically for kids. Great service, not crowded, definitely worth going, especially with the family. Will be back again soon.

Google
If you’re a fan of mango lassi, this place nails it. The moment I took the first sip, I knew it was something special, perfectly creamy, rich in mango flavor and just the right balance of sweetness. It’s thick, refreshing and feels like a tropical hug in a glass. What I loved most was how fresh and natural it tasted, not overly sugary like some other places. It pairs beautifully with spicy food and stands strong on its own as a delicious treat. Hands down, one of the best mango lassis I’ve had. Highly recommend trying it, you won’t be disappointed!

Google
This restraunt is top tier. Best Indian food in NC by a huge margin. Personally I suggest their Lamb Pasanda at a medium heat with saffron rice and garlic naan. Every dish they serve is a melody of flavor among a riot of color.

Google
The food is amazing , my drink was delicious and the atmosphere was welcoming. I would definitely recommend this place if your feeling Indian and even if your not lol I had the butter chicken and so did my mom and my dad had chicken malai and both were excellent

Google
I’m in from out of town and stopped by this place, immediately I get the notion it is good because of the amount of cars outside and people inside. I walk in and order to go, the waiter was extremely friendly and even the owner/manager came out and worked with me to get the best deal. My experience with them was fantastic! They are clearly good people! Even the food was out of this world! I even mentioned to my friends who are locals and they all say Agni is the place to go around here.

Google
Fantastic and memorable family dinner this evening. Food was top notch, the staff were perfectly timed with assistance, just great. We did not request it, but they heard us mention our daughter’s birthday led to us celebrating there. They, without prompting, brought out a delicious carrot based dessert with a lot candle in it. Highly recommend this gem of an establishment.

Google
The best Indian restaurant in Grennsboro! Food is mouthwatering, and the aroma is addicting. The staff is friendly and has great recommendations.

Yelp
We were driving through the area and searched for something interesting to stop and try, highly recommend this place. It's hidden but worth the stop!

Yelp
I don't usually get Indian food cause it's hit or miss where I live. So I'm in town for just one night and this place came up on Yelp. The place was really clean and nicely decorated. The lady that greeted me was very nice. I got a seat immediately. I looked at the menu and couldn't really decide what to get. I love lintel soup. They had that and i ordered it. A little more than medium is what I selected. I know they like hot spicy. I also ordered the Agni chicken. She recommended it. I got the soup and boy was it spicy. Oh, I also love spicy. I started to sweat, as usual for me. The soup was very good. As I finished the soup, the main course was being delivered. Nice presentation and good serving size. The chicken was tender chunks of brest meat in a nice curry sauce. It was perfect with the rice. The whole meal was very good. A lot of flavor. Big servings. Great service. This was a good choice for me. If you like Indian food or want to try it for the first time, this would be a good place to try. I recommend.

Yelp
I really enjoy Indian food, but lately I have not been able to take the heat sometimes so I was grateful they asked how hot I wanted the dishes we ordered! It was absolutely delicious- very fresh and done perfectly. I'm so glad to have discovered this spot- the service was nice as well- attentive, but not overly so. It's a little unassuming from the outside- don't be put off- it's well worth a visit if you enjoy Indian food!

Edward S.

Yelp
I was nervous the entire place was empty going in. I realized it was the time we entered, soon after guest started trickling in. The service was perfect very attentive but not overly attentive. The appetizers were especially delicious I mean I could have eaten several plates. They have several levels of spice for your comfort levels. The entrees were amazing and the portion size were abundant. I have enough leftovers for a couple days. The atmosphere was pretty good not loud we were able to communicate and enjoy ourselves I don't know what each meal name is but I'm posting photos. This is definitely a must try and a return is needed food was probably some of the best Indian food I've had in awhile.

Yelp
Let me see, how can I sum it up? Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Delicious. Best tikka Masala you can get find anywhere. I usually get chicken tikka but their paneer is so goooooood too! Yum!

Yelp
Went here on a whim due to the recommendation of Yelp. This was another one of those "don't judge a book by its cover" type place. Fortunately, Yelp can be a preview of what's inside. I genuinely don't know if we would've come here without the Yelp recommendation. We went in and just ordered. The inside isn't super fancy but it's just enough to feel comfortable to sit down at. We were absolutely floored of how delicious and plentiful the food was. They don't skimp like some places and I gotta admit, that food was DELICIOUS. We had leftovers and they were still just as yummy. Overall, if you're in the area craving Indian - this is the place to visit! Food Taste: 5 Overall Service: 5 Value of food to cost: 5 Facility: 4 Ambiance: Small mom/pop Indian place that was a converted fast food place. Very simplistic, nothing fancy. But simple is good. Repeat customer: yes Dog Friendly: no

Yelp
We really love Agni restaurant! My mom comes from out of town and requests to eat here. The folks who work there are so friendly and thoughtful. The food is amazing. The seating area is beautiful, clean, and makes me feel so comfortable. Thank you!

Yelp
Heavenly is the only word to describe this food. Yelp requires more characters but anything beyond "Heavenly" would be a brash insult to Truth. Possibly the best dish I think I've ever experienced. I'm here temporarily for work, but I hope to come back soon!

Joyti K.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the food here! Started off with the samosas .. maybe a little more seasoned would have been good but we enjoyed them with the chutney We ordered chicken 65, which was excellent ! The flavors were delicious! And then extra spicy vindaloo chicken which was served w rice. The color was a little 'fake' - like too much tandoori food coloring but the flavor was delicious We ordered some garlic naan which was delicious too All portions were generous! Def a revisit!!
google avatar

Autumn M.

Yelp
Solid Indian food, I'm not mad at it at all. I definitely would eat here again. I really like the tiki Marsala.
google avatar

Barry M.

Yelp
The best Chicken Tikka Masala I have ever had! I have had chicken Tikka Masala at perhaps 20 different restaurants, and this was my favorite. the people are friendly. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
Agni for me is the best Indian restaurant in the Triad. So much so that I've been here so many times I thought I had already written a review. On our last visit, we had the veg samosas which were big and fresh. At too many Indian restaurants I feel like the samosas were bought at Costco. Not these. The paneer butter Masala was rich and full of flavor, and I had to restrain myself from over-eating naan to sop it up. As with many restaurants these days, you pay dinner pricing ($15 +/-) even at lunch but I never leave Agni disappointed.
google avatar

Женя П.

Yelp
Definitely my favourite Indian restaurant! Paneer tikka masala is soo special! Service is always good.

Lauren P.

Yelp
Everything was so good, staff was super friendly and food came out quick! Butter chicken and naan was amazing, would definitely go again!

Yelp
Great little spot for tasty Indian cuisine and fast and friendly service. Stopped in for a quick dinner on our way home from the airport. Don't let the exterior fool you. This place is top notch. We were greeted and seated immediately and brought water. We both ordered a drink to start and then food. I ordered very spicy chicken tikka masala and our food came out very fast. The food was supremely delicious! Mine was also a good level of spice. We had plenty rice to go with our meal, but they did offer to refill whenever we needed it. The waiter was very attentive. We always had full waters glasses and he made sure we loved our meal. This may become my regular stop after airport trips!

Monica R.

Yelp
Great food, great service, friendly family atmosphere. Food was out promptly and the place was clean. Definitely would recommend and will come again!

Yelp
Oil and food color galore. The number of positive Yelp reviews pulled me to this place but I can bet something is not right. The location was shady, shabby decor, and hardly anyone on a Sunday afternoon. The single good/acceptable part was the only employee there who was pretty much doing everything with a smile. The starter Gobhi Manchurian was inedibly sour; I informed the server but he neither took it away to remake or removed it from the bill. The kebab platter was full of food colors, the tandoori chicken part was neon red and oil was all over the place. The entree, butter chicken was again loaded with red food color and malai kofta was oily. We as a family laughed at how we got scammed with the positive reviews and regretted our choice to go there. We don't eat food so oily and we all felt uneasy; Pepcid helped, hope it's not anything worse than the bloating and reflux. Ugh. FYI, it's a Nepalese restaurant serving Indian food.
google avatar

Ciera K.

Yelp
The food was excellent. Expensive for the portions. Ordered a $30 tandoori dish and it didn't even come with rice. $6 for a single piece of naan. The flavors were great and so was the service. Ambiance left much to be desired. While it was delicious I probably would not return just due to the price.

Yelp
After living in N High Point for almost 10 years, I decided to try Agni. OMG! Why did I wait so long, I ask. The food here is incredible-from Naan to Saag Paneer to any chicken dish is phenomenal. The chicken breast is so, so tender. My only wish is that they had a lunch menu, but we enjoy it the next day :) Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Agni Indian has been the go to Indian restaurant for us since we moved to the Triad. With their kind service, great customizations and their close proximity to where I am it nevers feels like we made the wrong decision by eating here. The food ks always as you'd expect, the quantities are almost good enough for 2 meals with reasonable pricing! This #ThankYouThursday I want remind people of this great Indian restaurant here in the Triad and ask then to bring back their lunch buffet!

Ryan W.

Yelp
Don't be fooled on the outside, this is the best Indian food I've ever had! The service is incredible and so nice and welcoming! Love this place!
google avatar

Bill W.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! Definitely a need to go place. Clean and great foods a well balanced menu.

Kim S.

Yelp
Soooooooo delicious! The garlic naan was slightly crispy, with a wonderful garlic flavor touched with salt. Loved it! We had the Chicken Tikka Masala and the house special of Lamb Chettinad. We could select our level of "heat". The sauces for each were so smooth and delectable. Service was attentive. We will go back and we highly recommend!

Yelp
Sorry for more lack of pictures. But I did introduce my best friend to Indian food which he has never had. Oh I tried to introduce him to foods that are not old country. He loves this food so much. He likes sushi the best and then this the second. Unfortunately I wasn't able to chew any of the special for two. I paid for the meal and didn't eat. I did dip into chutney and sauces, but that is hardly a meal. Luckily my best friend enjoyed it- I think he had thirds.

Lauren H.

Yelp
I had butter chicken for the first time- always been a paneer girl. I really liked it and the portion was big so I had some for lunch the next day! Delicious as leftovers. The jeera rice is the way to go. Amazing flavor. We had some indian beers too. I had the rupi? Suggested after I said I normally drink IPAs. I loved it. Easy to drink and complemented the meal. The staff was prompt and attentive. My coworker had a lamb dish and really enjoyed it. We split an order of garlic naan as well. I am not from here but I would recommend and if I was in the area again I would like to return.

Yelp
Absolutely, hands down, the best Indian food I've had probably ever. My sister and I decided to venture to Agni Indian Kitchen today for lunch and I'm so glad we did. We had the restaurant all to ourselves, but I really want to encourage people to visit and support this local Triad gem. No, there is no lunch buffet anymore. Thanks Covid. However, you now have the glorious opportunity to experience fresh, made to order, Indian cuisine. The dinner menu is offered, and yes, the prices are a bit higher than I would like to pay at lunch time, but the portion sizes and taste absolutely make it worth the money. My sister and I tried the Paneer Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, Garlic and Basil Naan, and Gulab Jaman. Let me just tell you, EVERYTHING was incredible. The Naan blew me away and was the perfect accompaniment to the buttery, creamy and rich dishes we chose. The entrees were about $16/pc, but we had leftovers of everything, except dessert. We couldn't dare leave that. As we sat and dined, our glasses were always full and the gentleman working was kind and attentive. He even went to get us a sampling of Tamarind sauce for my sister and Mint Chutney for me. Both of which paired well with our dishes. I really hope that we as a community, can support places like Agni, that once relied so heavily on their lunch buffet patrons, but are now struggling to keep customers to stay and enjoy what they are offering. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the best Indian food I've had. #SupportLocal

Yelp
Indian restaurant with good food and great service. Very tasty. I wish I had received more food for what was paid, but it was good and enough to fill me up. I would definitely go there again.
google avatar

Jad S.

Yelp
Very very authentic Indian food. Absolutely love everyyyything I've tried so far. The chicken 65 Indian spicy level is definitely where it's at but beware, that flavor is not for everyone haha. I'll sometimes go in and only order two orders of that...the flavors exploooode. Highly recommend this Indian joint
google avatar

Dayla K.

Yelp
I cannot count the number of times we have enjoyed this place? Whether it is dine in or take out, the food is consistently perfect! The staff is always kind and helpful! I cannot say enough kind things about Agni!!!! Most Sincerely, Dayla
google avatar

Cindy S.

Yelp
Every time I go to this restaurant I am satisfied. I get their butter chicken and garlic naan. It's a good portion and very tasty. Today I called my order in for pickup and it was ready exactly when they said it would be. I appreciate that a lot. I think the restaurant has an Indian flair but as I recognize that the building used to be a Wendy's I do have a little hard time getting past that. The signage is rather dated but I can overlook that for some good food!
google avatar

Brooke M.

Yelp
This was a perfect place to feed my Indian craving. The staff was fantastic and attentive. They made me a specialized dish even. Highly recommend the garlic basil naan!

Yelp
We ended up at Angi mid-afternoon after finding out that Lemon Indian was closed between lunch and dinner and we are so glad that we did! The food was delicious and flavorful and I loved that they had Thali dishes in Nepali style, which I don't think any of the Indian restaurants in Greensboro have anymore. This veg thali was so delicious, although I do wish the Saag dish had paneer, only because Palak/Saag paneer is my favorite item to order at Indian restaurants. I didn't have to miss it too much, however, because it was great to try several different dishes. I ordered the thali medium spice, which was a little spicier than what is usually given to me at other restaurants, but I didn't mind, especially with the Raita that came with my dish. My husband ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, which I didn't get a pic of. He ordered it as spicy as possible (Indian hot) and ,although he would say he could handle it spicier, there were no complaints as it was creamy, flavorful, and delicious with nice size chunks of white meat chicken. We also ordered some samosas which were great, especially with the trio of sauces given to us. I couldn't decide which I liked more and the staff was so nice to package up a little container of each to bring home. Speaking of the staff, we had a great time talking to Alisha (spelling?) who was from Nepal and had a very welcoming and accommodating demeanor and the man who waited on us was very nice and helpful as well. If you're looking for great Indian/Nepalese food, Agni won't disappoint. I just wish I would've seen that they had Momos on their menu, but we will be back to eat again as soon as possible. Bonus for the future: they have a drive-thru to pick up food (please consider lunch specials and I'll come to pick up food often!)

Yelp
Wonderful!!! The lamb curry was truly amazing. Great place to dine. Atmosphere, food, service were all top notch.

Yelp
Still pleased with this place! My fav Indian spot! Very friendly, fast service and the food is soooo good!

Yelp
Absolutely outstanding. I was very pleased to talk to the owner and find out that he's Nepalese. I had the Lamb Biryani and it was very, very good and authentic.

Yelp
Amazing Indian cuisine. Have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. The tomato soup is great and the tikka masala with whatever protein is to die for.

Wanda C.

Yelp
The food here is amazing, this is true Indian food! It was delivered hot and fresh! We ordered the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan! Thank you
google avatar

Demetrios G.

Yelp
My goodness my goat! Goat! Did I mention goat? Goat. Needless to say they have goat curry. I've been to many places that have goat on the menu and rarely do they actually deliver (oh, sorry we're out this week... for the 50th week in a row). Spice wise i asked for 11 on a scale of 1-10 and they delivered a solid 9. That's a highly respectable number as much like the goat most places I've been rarely deliver on the spice. Bullet Naan (chili naan) was crisp and chewy just like it should be. Service was fast and friendly. American Airlines gets a massive thumbs down for delaying my flight over 4 hours but Agni gets major kudos for turning a sour experience into a delicious one.
google avatar

Fabiola D.

Yelp
It's been a while since I went for Indian food. Missed the buffet so much, which mostly they haven't get it back yet. Hopefully soon. Ok then we are thinking to go to try Agni. This is not my first time but it's been for a while. The guy Owner is very friendly and attentive. I do enjoy the food. Only the thing that make me gave 3 stars in here is the tidiness, need little attention, and someone need to check the air condition....because I felt that AC not working properly. Hope it fixed now... But I certainly will come back to try some more...
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
Food was fantastic. Enjoyed the conversation with the owner Raj and got good suggestions of Garlic Naan, Chi 65 (app) chicken tikka masala, and my co worker had the Chicken Vindaloo. We also enjoyed the Saffron Rice to accompany everything we ate. The Food was cooked perfectly spice level suggested was exactly what I wanted. Ambiance was fun and service was with a smile. We'll be back.

Yelp
My Husband and I love Indian food, we're pretty darn picky (because we both love to cook ourselves!) and our favorite Indian restaurant is in Charlotte...and since moving to High Point 5 1/2 years ago, we had just not yet ventured out to find one here. Agni has such great reviews, we decided to go try it out and SO glad we finally did. Like, what took us so long, lol! The owner was SO nice and very welcoming from the instant we walked in...the place was quaint and quiet with catchy Indian music playing in the background. The owner was a big help in guiding us on what to order. I'll start by saying that the basil garlic naan bread here is AMAZING! Probably the best we've ever had. We tried the vegetable samosas and really loved the variety of sauces that came with them. Really good. I ordered my usual Chicken Tikka Masala and my husband ordered the Shrimp Madras HOT. Both were bursting with wonderful aromas and savory flavors! Everything was just really, really good. Portion sizes were perfect. My husband commented several times on how much he enjoyed his dinner...as did I. Needless to say, we'll be back soon! -Lisa L

Yelp
The food was great. Ingredients tasted fresh. Everything was well and authentically seasoned. The portion size was great for the cost. I thoroughly enjoyed my order. Oh and the delivery was fast as well!

Curtis S.

Yelp
Yup. All those 5 star reviews were spot-on! Everything was the perfect blend of everything. I ordered a masala lassi to drink (salty yogurt with spices and mint). It was incredible. It was like a meal all by itself. Very salty and savory and unlike anything I've ever had. The Agni Chicken Curry (medium spicy) is to DIE for. Sweet, and savory and spicy all at once. All those flavors deliciously and precariously perched on a knife's edge. I couldn't imagine it being any better. Damn. I wish I lived closer than 7 hours away! I also got the mixed grill appetizer plate. It was pretty good, but everything else outshone it by far. If I had ONLY had the mixed grill, I would have enjoyed it, but I wouldn't be raving like a lunatic like I'm doing now!

Ariane L.

Yelp
My first time trying Indian food. We drove an hour to try this restaurant and it did not disappoint. Food portions were just great and prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. It was fun to watch the food served on sizzling plates, the aroma and presentation of the food definitely added a plus to the overall experience. The mango lassi was addicting and the vegetable samosas were a hit for me. I will be back again!

Yelp
Food was amazing. I came in from out of town and saw great reviews and did not disappoint. The lamb and naan was so delicious.

Yelp
And... Under New Management Again... 01/24/20 So apparently just after the new year this place has unfortunately changed hands again. The food has changed a bit, not to my personal liking but maybe to yours. Everyone seems nice but I prefer the old way... sorry. ***Under New Management*** If you haven't eaten here in a month or two, please note that they are under new management and all employees are new faces. The weekday lunch buffet is still $10 but they are making a new effort to offer new and different choices daily. The food is very good and checked on frequently. It is still a small buffet but they offer a great selection of vegetarian and meat choices, including desserts and chai. Due to its smaller size, busier hours can deplete the buffet quickly. If you haven't stopped in a while, come by and give them a try. Previous review: The weekday lunch buffet is always a great choice. For $10 there is a good selection of meat and vegetables. They open at 11am and 12pm is generally when it starts to get really crowded. Sometimes it's hard for them to keep up with the lunch rush but they do check on the food often. A lot of the surrounding business members seem to come in for lunch during the week. I've had supper here before and their chicken tikka masala is always good. At supper they serve mint chutney and chips with your meal. One plus is that the women's restroom has always also been very clean.

Yelp
Best Indian food on the East Coast, USA! I had take out here a few weeks ago & it was absolutely fresh & delicious! I'm fairly new to this area & have tried other Indian restaurants, that simply don't compare. I've lived up & down the East coast & you can't find Indian food quite like this anywhere. My #1 now & I'll be back.
