The Best Places to Dine in Fredericksburg, Virginia | Eater DC

"Not your average cafe, Agora is a quirky, cozy spot that serves traditional coffee drinks alongside creative specials (think hot pepper mochas with a hefty a dash of cayenne and boozy lattes). Housed in a charming historic building, its vibe is effortlessly bohemian, with mismatched furniture, local art on the walls, and an upstairs loft. A perfect place to read, relax, or get a little work done. For another non-chain coffee spot, head to Hyperion." - Robey Martin

Google
First off . Mocha coffee! It was really good. I was tempted to order another. The egg sandwich, nice buttery croissant with a tasty egg inside. The blue berry muffin I was skeptical. It was kind of tiny and heavy... But it was filling and strong blue berry flavor. Great place to go for a quick snack! Not many tables... But the place was not full. Kind of off season though. Cozy place. Books for sale in the back.. Limited selection don't get too excited...

Quaint coffee shop in downtown Fredericksburg is a must visit! The staff were friendly, the coffee was good and the gluten free cinnamon pumpkin muffin was yummy! Make this a stop on your list if you are in town and in need of some good coffee!

Google
What a perfectly cozy coffee shop, it's even its own bookstore! The coffee was great and the interior has a fair amount of seating + there is a lovely patio in the back garden with additional seating. The food options are a bit limited but the muffin I had was yummy (if not a bit small).

Google
Absolutely adore this place, wish I could get drinks here every day. Their food is amazing, their drinks are amazing and so unique. They have so many options to alter drinks. The staff is amazing. Service can be a little slow at times but it's always when it's busy so it absolutely makes sense it'd be a little slow. Love this place, cannot recommend it enough. Their writing on the cups is so cute, I LOVE it!

Google
I had a good experience at Agora Coffee Shop. It’s stroller-friendly thanks to a convenient ramp on the side of the building, which made getting in hassle-free. The coffee was on the milder side—less bold than I typically prefer—but still enjoyable. They offer a wide variety of options, including some creative specialty drinks, and their pastry selection looked absolutely delicious (I'll definitely be trying one next time). The outdoor seating is a major plus. There's plenty of space and a lot of tables, making it a great spot to sit and relax. Just a heads-up: the train passing nearby can be a bit noisy if you’re sitting outside, but it wasn’t enough to ruin the vibe. All in all, it was a pleasant visit with good coffee, a welcoming setup for families, and a lovely outdoor area. I’d happily come back.

Google
First time visitors, what a nice coffee shop in a nice town. Tried the Flower Child Latte. It had lavender, rose, and vanilla with espresso (Oat milk extra charge) and it was delicious. And I love the art on the cup - I thought it was printed first, did a double take. They have beans, pastries, and other merchandise too. Street parking wasn't bad on a Saturday afternoon.

Google
I stopped into this adorable little café in downtown Fredericksburg, and honestly, it was such a pleasant surprise. It’s a cozy, intimate spot with limited seating, but the atmosphere makes up for it — charming, friendly, and instantly welcoming. I ordered a brown sugar cinnamon chai latte with oat milk (which the staff helped me pick out since I’m not a big coffee or tea drinker), and oh my goodness… it was absolutely delicious. Warm, sweet, perfectly spiced — the kind of drink that settles right into your soul. Another thing I loved? They offer plenty of lighter food options for just about every diet — gluten-free, dairy-free, and more. It’s nice to walk into a café and actually feel considered. The service was wonderful too. Everyone was personable and patient, answering my questions and guiding me toward something I’d actually enjoy. For someone like me who normally stares at a café menu like it’s a foreign language, that meant the world. Highly recommend this spot if you’re in the area and want a cozy drink crafted with care. I’ll definitely be back.

Google
The coffee tastes fantastic and everyone here is awesome, super friendly, and very accommodating. Loving the pumpkin muffins with chocolate chips!

Yelp
This is our favorite coffee shop the whole setup of being in a historic building downtown to how friendly the staff is. Let's not forget how excellent the coffee and pastries are. A great place to come and relax.
google avatar

Yelp
The coffee was really good. I had a peppermint mocha. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because their food options were limited and it was tricky getting around the cafe with a baby.

Yelp
Love love love this little gem found in historic Fredericksburg. They have a plethora of tea and coffee to choose from. They also have macarons, danishes, cakes, and other dessert. They also sell small gift items. As you walk towards the back, you'll see that they have lots of areas to sit, and maybe even to work or study. They also have a little book area to either look at while in the shop or to buy the books. I was super surprised they also sell coffee cocktails. They make sure to place a sticker over the spout to remind you to either wait to drink until you get home, or finish the drink inside the store. Everyone was super nice. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Every time I come downtown I must stop here for coffee and sweets. They have many options that I can choose for coffee , tea and sweets. Always great service and cute little book store in the back.

Yelp
While traveling, I always like to visit non-chain coffee shops and searching Yelp, this one surfaced to the top of the choices. Located in a neighborhood, it was a perfect shop to walk to or park on the street. Arriving around 7am, there was a bit of a line but it moved quickly. The location has to be a home built in the 1800's and it's a narrow location and deep with seating sections both inside and out. The two staff members behind the counter were great getting the drinks and food out. My overall wait for my Honey Bear Latte was about five minutes. The muffins and pastries looked amazing. I am back in town next month and will make my way here again. I will plan to make time to relax to enjoy the patio area next time. Make sure you stop by and give them a try. Enjoy!

Yelp
It's a charming location in the historic downtown. It was a hot day, and I was able to get a cold matcha-based beverage with a milk alternative. I saw some mason jars with oatmeal breakfasts. Needing something the next day, I took one to go. It was a decent brown sugar an chia seed combination. They were out of some other things, but they certainly had enough here to be worth stopping in.

Yelp
We didn't have any food but I'm sure it's tasty. Service was adequately appropriate considering how busy they. My HeartBEET was flavorful. Great book for seating solo or small groups.

Yelp
I love Agora. I was so happy to see that it was still as great now as when I first visited a few years back. It has all the coffee shop esthetics you can ask for. This last time, I got the brown sugar latte, and it was so yummy. I absolutely love all the seating areas both inside and outside of the coffee shop. I enjoyed a seat inside with my summer reading. I had a friend that was staying in a hotel close to this coffee shop. I told him about it and he got the same drink as me and he loved it. I cannot wait to visit again while in Fredricksburg.

Yelp
First visit to Fredericksburg and stopped in for this coffee shop's Yelp reviews! Did not disappoint. Coffee was delicious. Blueberry muffin was perfectly homemade.

Yelp
Agora is Awesome! My wife and I both have dietary restrictions: both gluten free, and her dairy and egg free. The coffee at Agora is excellent, particularly their Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte and their Chili Pepper Mocha! My wife got the Brown Sugar latte with oat milk every day of our 4 day stay in Fredericksburg! We also got to enjoy their pumpkin Gluten free, dairy free, vegan muffins! They were incredible! The service was also impeccable! One of the owners overheard that we had complicated dietary needs in our order and stopped what she was doing to explain what we could have and help ring up our order. Ma'am - thank you! The vide seems pretty relaxed, and they have some seating in a back room. We didn't sit there, only did take out so I can't say for sure how it is. Thanks again Agora! We will be back if we are in FDX again!

Yelp
When in town I make it a point to stop here. I tried the Honeysuckle matcha with oat milk, iced. YUM. Literally my new favorite. This is a very quaint establishment and it tends to be quite popular. Service is knowledgeable of the menu and patient. A must try !
google avatar

Yelp
Great coffee. Pleasant atmosphere. Competitive pricing. It is an overall nice age to sit read a book and grab a bite to munch!
google avatar

Arielle B.

Yelp
Loved the drink I had here and the creativity on the menu--I saw innovative tea drinks that I haven't seen anywhere else, which always catches my attention. They had a big line when I was there, but the team hustled hard and was so pleasant. They don't up-charge for almond or oat milks, which is a huge plus. Finally, they have expansive seating areas in the back with books that are fun to pursue. Slightly disappointed that my rosemary scone didn't have a stronger rosemary flavor, but the texture of it was great. I'd give a 4.5 overall.
google avatar

Sheri H.

Yelp
Wonderful find! Loved the atmosphere, artwork, book book, staff...and everything was so tasty!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love this place - the environment, the coffee, the creativity, the food, the baristas are awesome. Quality place, best cafe in Fredericksburg!
google avatar

Dani H.

Yelp
I absolutely love this spot! I'm currently working in Fredericksburg and will be sad to leave specifically because of this coffee shop. The blueberry muffins - to die for. I have had a multitude of combinations with the chai and matcha my favorites being the pistachio chai, and the lavender blueberry matcha. Also their beet drinks are not to be overlooked, I have definitely recreated them a few times myself. The spot is a little before the hustle and bustle of downtown Fred so you can usually find parking. The staff here is also very kind and usually able to answer any questions you have about the menu. I love the ambiance inside with the books and local vendor items spread throughout. My only downfall is that I didn't get to experience it in warmer weather and sit outside. I would definitely not miss this spot if you are in town.
google avatar

Carolyn C.

Yelp
Super cute! Quite an extensive menu of coffee and espresso concoctions to select from! We tried three (we really needed a pick-up)--all were good. I recommend the espresso here!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little place nestled in historic downtown Fredericksburg! It's right by the Amtrak train station and definitely worth a stop! My friend and I ordered lattes, and a double chocolate chip cookie, and mango coconut oats! I got the London Fog latte which was perfect for the cold autumn nights! Service was quick and friendly! Definitely will return when in the area!!

Yelp
I was driving back to NoVA from Richmond and stopped by - Agora was one of the only coffee places open at around 7 PM on Sunday. Thank God, too, because I desperately needed coffee at that moment...traffic was awful. I ordered the flower child latte with oat milk and it was yummy - I contemplated getting an extra shot but decided it wasn't needed and I wanted to sleep that night. I'm glad I didn't get that extra shot because one was enough and I'm happy to confirm that I indeed was able to sleep at a decent time that night! The barista was super friendly and the store itself was really cute. I got some postcards to send friends and also a little coffee sticker. Would come back for sure!

Yelp
My wife and I visited Agora Coffee yesterday, and it was an incredible experience! It's locally owned and maintained and the attention to detail is astounding. I love coffee shops; this one is among the best that I've experienced. The baristas were friendly, the coffee was excellent, and there is ample seating both inside and out. The ambience is warm and inviting. My latte was one of the best I've ever had. I highly recommend their Trail Mix cookie; if it's any indication, their other pastries must be just as delicious. If you live anywhere near Fredericksburg, Virginia, or are just passing through, don't miss it. As a bonus, it's also a historical site -- located in one of the oldest buildings in Fredericksburg, built in 1787.

Briana B.

Yelp
Small place, but very cozy. Great service and good coffee. I would choose this shop over most other coffee shops down town.

Shawn P.

Yelp
Fantastic coffee, well run. Attentive, peaceful, consistent great service.. so glad they're right here in downtown Fredericksburg!
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Delightful staff. Helped me mix the perfect beverage. I ended up with a vanilla, lavender latte with an extra shot of espresso. It was so so tasty and smoooooth. I also enjoyed a blueberry pancake macaron and blueberry muffin. GO HERE IMMEDIATELY

Yelp
This place is very popular, as the line was practically out the door when we arrived. Luckily, it moved very quickly. I came in with the hopes of ordering a small snack with my coffee, although the foods available were not the most appealing. I can't speak for the taste, but I immediately forgot the idea. I did appreciate the use of organic eggs and milk products. I opted for an ice latte, while my boyfriend ordered the sparkling lavender lemonade. I was half expecting a bright purple drink, but was pleasantly surprised when a practically clear drink came out. It's nice to get drinks that don't contain unnecessary added colors. The ice latte was very good. I was a little off-put by the fact that they made their espressos directly into the plastic cups. Heat and plastic are not a good combination and I know these espressos can come out very hot. Regardless, I understand the appeal of the coffee shop. To the naked eye, it doesn't look super thrilling. There isn't much of a design to it, but I didn't really get a chance to explore the whole space. Walking in, though, I was definitely unsure. This place is a good lesson to not judge a book by its cover. The drinks we had were delicious and I'm sure that the next time I'm in Fredericksburg, I'll stop by for some more coffee.

Yelp
We came by 4 times the week we were in town for the Strangely Delicious, coffee and orange juice drink. It is as it says so strangely delicious and addictive:) The shop is cute and has Bad Truck Pottery mugs and ornaments for sale. We also tried several cookies, and muffins and were all delicious. Go for it and try the Strangely Delicious. I wish they made it in a store near me.
google avatar

XI X.

Yelp
Good coffee, but the baked goods were not great. The chocolate walnut cookies were chalky due to being stored in the fridge, making them less enjoyable.
google avatar

Drew L.

Yelp
Our favorite spot to grab coffee in Fredericksburg! Nice quant place for an enjoyable cup of Joe!
google avatar

Juliana T.

Yelp
The location of the coffee shop is rich with different shops and tons of parking. Came across this place with our friends who live in VA and we had a relaxing time while drinking our coffees. The bath yard is so pretty and we can bring our dogs.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
The BEST coffee I've ever had. Do you know when you read the menu and the coffee you want to try has 4/5 different ingredients and when you drink it taste like coffee with creamer from a grocery store?! Not in this place, here you will taste every single ingredient perfectly balanced and it fells like we are in heaven... lol seriously I could hear angels singing in the back while I was drinking my favorite
google avatar

Stella K.

Yelp
The coffee shop is an interesting one. It reminds me of Cafe Amouri in Vienna, VA but it's more eclectic. The coffee here though is SO GOOD. I have been to so many coffee shops and the brown sugar cinnamon latte I tried over the weekend was delicious. I rarely give 5 star reviews but this place, deserves it. Very friendly service too even though they were very busy late Saturday afternoon. I highly recommend and I will definitely be back to try more of their menu.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
The menu had many options to choose from. The coffee drinks all looked amazing making it difficult to choose which one to order. This is a quaint coffeehouse with cozy atmosphere. Friendly staff and very clean facilities.
google avatar

Ericka F.

Yelp
First time here today, It's cute, cozy, and delicious. Nice art work as well. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Austin G.

Yelp
Agora has impressive ratings on Yelp- 5 stars and over 100 reviews. Visiting during the pandemic, the space looks nice with seating in the back by a bookshelf of books and a mural. The front of the house sells products and baristas make coffee drinks. My friend ordered a cappuccino and it wasn't made properly. It had way too much foam in it. My brown sugar latte was just okay. Nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Rhonda J.

Yelp
What a quaint little spot. I live in the area but never visited until a friend invited me. Very cozy, converted row home. Limited seating but it's very charming. Ya gotta see it for yourself. They use refurbished random furniture which makes it interesting. There is a tiny bookshelf of books. They sell items like jewelry, essential oils oh and coffee, pastries and sandwiches. I had the French cream drink..... yummy. Got the vanilla latte for my kid and she liked it. She wasn't impressed with the chocolate chip cookie but she's a home baker soooo..... Their prices are reasonable and the staff was very polite. Downtown has lots of coffee shops that I need to visit but this one is a keeper.
google avatar

Ivar F.

Yelp
The best beans in the area. This staff overall know their business and has good knowledge about coffee. I consider myself a coffee snob. When I explain my request they know. Dry, more foam, etc. I can't say a bad thing about the service. They are all friendly and willing to accommodate your request or gripe. In my opinion, best in Fredericksburg.
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Cute ambiance in downtown Fredericksburg! We got spicy chai- not my favorite. It tastes like Oregon. I should have asked, but because I didn't, it's my fault. And brown sugar cinnamon latte. Not for me because... coffee meh. But my husband liked it. Said it's very good. Let me rephrase, he loves it! Too bad we are too far away, but next time I'm in town, I'll try something else than chai :) For you, if you love Oregon chai- come! If you don't like Oregon, try something else :) They also have a small shop that sells jewelry, lotion, and beans!

Maeve W.

Yelp
Great drinks, I really appreciate the allergy-friendly food that they serve (especially the cookies). Perfect for studying, I just wish they had more comfortable seating.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
First time I've been here! It's so cute inside! My friend brought me here for a morning breakfast date. I ordered the iced green tea and the chocolate chip brownies. I was so excited by the yelps review and thought this was going to be amazing. I was highly disappointed by the ice green tea, it was watered down and no flavor to it. It was bland, but the brownies were amazing! Overall I would come back for the brownies but not the tea.

Cathryn W.

Yelp
Honestly, I was very skeptical of a place with only five star reviews, but agora coffee is amazing! The brown bear latte and egg cheesy croissant were delicious. All of the employees were friendly, service was fast. It was very welcoming inside. I've never felt the need to return to a local coffee shop- but this place is definitely worth going out of my way again!

Katie B.

Yelp
This was recommended to us by a local and it was hands down the best recommendation. The coffee was amazing and we loved that it was a little slice of Virginia. The barista was very helpful and recommended the Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte. We got it iced with almond milk, amazing.

Jacqueline M.

Yelp
Picked up a few iced lattes on the way out of town and loved it here! Got two iced brown sugar lattes and they were some of the best lattes we've had! I always will opt to give business to places that do not charge extra for alternative milk options :) Super friendly staff and very cute vibes inside.
google avatar

Melanie N.

Yelp
Love this little cafe! If you're ever in downtown Fredericksburg, this is definitely a place to visit for a nice cup of coffee or tea. I got the decaf red chai and an everything bagel with cream cheese. Highly recommend. Hope this helps!
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
I always love coming here to Agora. The staff is great, the coffee is amazing, the food is delicious. I love that you can sit outside when the weather is nice out! My favorites are the spicy chai and a banana brown sugar latte! You won't be disappointed coming to Agora....they never miss!!
google avatar

Ashley G.

Yelp
Well no wonder this place has 5 stars. The staff are all super nice, the decor is awesome and cozy, and all the stuff for sale is local. Try the salted chocolate chip cookie!
google avatar

Jackie B.

Yelp
Indoor seating is limited, but great to stop for a quick sip of coffee or take for a walk outdoors. Interior was well designed! Their lattes are okay - felt the milk was greater proportion than the espresso portion. Also milk was too frothy for a latte. Their baked goods are delicious! I had the apple walnut bread, which I loved. Would def visit again for their baked goods!

Vicky T.

Yelp
Despite the amazing Facebook info & postings we were slightly disappointed in the coffee drinks (too sweet) & the choices for breakfast were quite limited. Service was good - only did grab & go due their ongoing renovations. Cute space though.
google avatar

Chad K.

Yelp
Very unique vibe in this spot. Really kind people. Not the most efficient, but it's more of a hang-back kind of spot. It may be by design, but it's not a great place to work. The wifi is fine, but there's just an absence of table space, quiet, and wall plug-ins for it to make sense. Great spot for a latte and friend-meetup though!

Ian L.

Yelp
Agora is a cozy cafe in the heart of FBX. Located a short walk from the VTA/Amtrak station, it is a nice place to work, read, or study. The space isn't massive, but there is usually seating to be found, and you'll often find a diverse crowd ranging from UMW students to retirees. The baristas are nice and the drinks are pretty good for the price. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a decent selection of espresso-based drinks and some non-coffee concoctions as well. Agora also offers a small selection of pastries and sweet treats.

Yelp
Date of visit: October 23, 2019 Love this place!!! It is super cute inside and out and out it was! We sat out in the courtyard on a beautiful cool autumn day. I ordered a dark chocolate orange latte. On the menu it had cinnamon as well but I don't care for cinnamon, so they put extra dark chocolate for me. It was amazing and probably the best I've ever had! We will be back for sure.
