Agriturismo Il Rigo | Best places to stay in Tuscany

"A long-established agriturismo located in a glorious setting just outside lovely old San Quirico in the Val d’Orica, Il Rigo is a working organic farm run by the ninth generation of the Simonelli family. Guest accommodation is in two old stone case coloniche (farmhouses) where you can expect comfortable rooms filled with country antiques and pretty bed-linens, with views of the Val d’Ocia to die for. The farm produces organic stone-ground flour, olive oil, jams, pasta and sourdough bread, all of which – along with other local specialities – can be sampled in the restaurant. Il Rigo is ideal for a rustic farm holiday, in one of the most beautiful corners of Tuscany. " - Nicky Swallow

We have just spent a week at Il Rigo as part of a Collett's Walking Holiday. Would highly recommend it. Simple no frills but beautiful accommodation, sparkling clean, with gorgeous crisp bedding and lovely views (Room 9). We particularly like this room as there was a bath with a good overhead shower. Just what was needed after long walking days. Amazing location with fabulous views all round. We loved the dining room with the cosy fire and the amazing food. The hotel staff were all very friendly and caring and made us feel welcome.

It's been two weeks since we left and we still talk about how wonderful it was to be there. Note: The review is 5 stars for what it is, not compared to the Ritz-Carlton or the Orient Express La Dolce Vita. That said, it would earn those 5 stars against much more expensive locations. There are so many good things to say about il Rigo! The people are the true stars, always welcoming, helpful, and a delight to be around. They became our new friends. A special acknowledgement to Lucia, a ray of sunshine every time we saw her. Noemi was a great resource for local info and we had a useful, enjoyable wine lesson from Matthias. Breakfast was always a great start to the day made better when the decadent chocolate dessert "leftovers" from dinner the night before were served with breakfast. Dessert for breakfast?!? That is VACATION! We ate several fantastic dinners at il Rigo. Sometimes the menu is "foreign" but trust that the preparation will be delicious and be bold enough to try new things-- you will be rewarded. The buildings and grounds are well-kept, clean, and a perfect Tuscan experience. Our room, in the second building, was spacious, clean and very comfortable. The view was great, bathroom was comfortably large and quite, bed and pillows, etc., were all good. There is a water kettle and refrigerator/freezer in the common area. Laundry service is available on site, I think it was 35 Euro. We went in to town and used the laundromat, for the experience, and spent about 20 Euros. We were expecting brown landscapes and were pleasantly surprised by how green it was. Many fields were brown but some were green as were the trees, etc. The gardens at il Rigo were a joy to see. We rented an electric car. While il Rigo does not have charging (and not expected!) we were able to find charging stations easily enough. Our car was able to handle all but the very gnarliest (truly a tractor path!) "roads". There is plenty of free parking at il Rigo. Our stay was 9 days at il Rigo. We would do it again without hesitation.

My wife and I did a cooking class with Lorenza for our honeymoon at Casa dell'Abate Naldi, her personal and historic residence in nearby San Quirico D’Orcia. It was one of the top highlights of our honeymoon. Lorenza is a special person and we felt fortunate to spend time with her. She welcomed us as guests into her home and provided a hands-on, authentic Tuscan cooking experience. The food was incredible and we learned a lot about pasta and cooking in general. Lorenza is a pro chef and cooks beautifully. Beyond that, she is kind, caring, and giving of her time. We hope to see her again and highly encourage you to visit her beautiful home for a cooking class. Grazie mille Lorenza!

Beautifully located in the Tuscan hills, Agriturismo Il Rigo offers stunning views, authentic and stylish accommodation, and excellent food. Everything was clean and comfortable, and the staff were exceptionally friendly. A truly memorable stay – we would love to come back!

We did not stay at this agriturismo but did visit the restaurant for their four course tasting menu. The experience was unbelievable, an incomparably prepared meal and experience, our best total dining experience during our 10 day Tuscan vacation. The rabbit served was the best protein dish I’ve had in my life (while also being the source of uncontrolled laughter watching my wife attempt to eat Bugs Bunny/Peter Rabbit…!). Great sunset views, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

An honest review…. We booked this as the first stop on our honeymoon around Italy. Initially the location and the house is beautiful, it really is an authentic farmhouse. The staff seem friendly and the food was nice but nothing to write home about. In particular the breakfast was quite disappointing. Our room was charming but very basic. The massive issue we had was that there was no air conditioning and the room/ house seemed to heat up during the day and felt like a sauna. We could not sleep at all. There is no respite from the heat and in all honestly we considered leaving early because we could not get a second of sleep in our boiling hot room. This was not mentioned on the website, There is a lovely farm dog however he is constantly barking throughout the night as he sleeps outside, they do provide ear plugs in the room because of this. All in all we found our experience underwhelming compared to the reviews we read about it.

I booked this place because I read that it’s a ‘photographer dream’ and … it definitely was. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing here, truly breathtaking!||We appreciated the hospitality, the kindness (Neomi is truly 5 stars!) and the location which sets it apart from others. ||In the ‘I wish I could’ list there is:|- a/c. They gave us fans and those helped a lot. |- shampoo/conditioner. I appreciate the commitment to sustainability but the soap bar alone has limitations.|- dinner was unfortunately in line with the reviews. Absolutely amazing one night and meh the other. Nothing in between. It’s rolling the dice for €40. |- the room key. Oh the room key. I do love that this is an old and cherished farmhouse but the room key does not work unless you wake up everybody you are with while trying to get out. It’s so so soooo finicky and so so soooo loud. ||Bottom line: read the reviews, align your expectations and book it. It’s a photographer dream.

Yelp
Fantastic location. Simple place with breakfast and dinner to keep us from having to hunt down a restaurant. We were looking for a slower pace, relax and unwind. This place provided that to us. If you are looking for a swanky villa, go elsewhere. The price was fantastic, the view was stunning and there are great day trips from this spot. We visited in October. The meals were elegant, perfectly paired courses and stunning Michelin rated dining. The wine options were local and good. The walls were a bit thin but not too bad. The olive oil soap and shampoo were a lovely touch. The rooms were large and beds were comfortable. I don't have super high standards, I typically just need a place to hold my bags, shower and sleep. This spot provided all the necessities and so much more. Connect with the owners and staff. When you see the passion that they have for what they do, you appreciate what they have created at Il Rigo so much more. Cheers!
