Ahizpak Le Restaurant des Sœurs

"This bolthole is run by an irresistible trio of ahizpak (‘sisters’ in Basque). They pool their skills and talents to conjure up meals with a focus on premium, seasonal Basque produce. Delicate, succulent and generous are the watchwords of this welcoming establishment. Sunday Brunch." - Michelin Inspector

Ahizpak

"In the upper reaches of the beach of Erretegia, this former haunt of the Arangoits sisters (‘ahizpak’ in Basque) is idyllically located opposite the ocean. Delphine, now alone at the helm, and her chef David Cerisier have devised a concise, modern and eater-friendly priced menu that keeps step with the seasons. Generous, enticing food, served on the terrace in fine weather, examples of which are a chilled cream of green peas, carrot and lime oil; hanger steak, gratin of potatoes, coppa and comté and a decadent crêpe soufflée in orange and Grand Marnier to finish." - Michelin Inspector

A fantastic restaurant: - very high quality food, at the level of the Guide Michelin’s taste - a great location with a amazing view on top of the ocean - a reduced but great choice of wines - interesting cocktail proposals The food itself is fantastic, the egg was amazing, the fish sublimed with the sauce and dark rice bed. The dessert as well, crepe soufflé dipped with île flottante was an impressive plate construct. The waitresses are smiley and correct. The atmosphere is quite trendy, get prepared to feel slightly disoriented by the luxury look of the other customers.

A wonderful place where you are welcomed with a smile in a beautiful atmosphere and you leave with a full stomach. The food is really great! Those three sisters know their business. I truly recommend this place!

Unfortunately our experience was not positive. Despite the lovely table on the patio with views of the water, our party of four did not enjoy our evening. The wine, drinks and our pre-prepared entrees of sardines, gazpacho and terrine came out quickly. We waited an hour before we inquired about service as not a single staff came by to check in on us, refill our water or provide updates on the main course. The “madame” came and said, “What is the problem? It’s always like this and has been for 14 years”. Shortly thereafter, the kitchen staff came out with the main course. So service was not in keeping with our expectation but as the madame said it’s been this way for years and I guess it works for some. The food was mixed - solidly prepared beef, dry tasteless pork, fish in a heavy cream sauce. This experience wasn’t in keeping with our history of Michelin recommendations.
