A First and Last Visit
We were meant to discover this restaurant for the first time. Instead, the experience was so unpleasant that it has completely and definitively erased any desire to ever return.
Admittedly, we arrived with a slight delay — less than twenty minutes — but this had been clearly communicated and professionally handled by the concierge of the Bayerischer Hof, where we have been staying every winter for the Christmas and New Year holidays for the past fifteen years. The concierge had called three times, the last call being at 6:00 pm, more than two hours before our arrival, to reconfirm our reservation as well as the presence of a very small dog, discreetly carried in a bag.
Despite this, we were simply turned away, our table having been given to other guests.
The reception was handled by a woman named Linh, whose attitude was one of absolute coldness and dryness. No apology, no embarrassment, no attempt at understanding, and not the slightest trace of empathy were shown — as if we had committed some serious fault, despite everything having been confirmed well in advance.
The situation was made even more unpleasant by the fact that we were left standing in a narrow queue along the dining tables, under the gaze of seated guests, in an atmosphere that was overheated, noisy and oppressive, more reminiscent of a crowded night bar than of a restaurant supposedly offering a refined and intimate ambiance — especially considering the high prices charged on the menu.
This complete lack of humanity in the welcome stands in stark contrast to what one is entitled to expect from a Thai restaurant, a culture traditionally associated with refinement, gentleness and a deep sense of hospitality. Here, only the décor seems to reflect that promise.
We have, of course, informed the Bayerischer Hof, whose concierge service — impeccable for fifteen years — will now ensure that its guests are spared such an experience in the future.
As far as we are concerned, the matter is closed.
This was meant to be a first visit; it was also the last.
Never again.
