"This shop in a market serves Penang-style curry mee at friendly prices. The mee is cooked over charcoal, in a well-balanced soup with spices, chilli paste and coconut milk; tofu puffs and spring squid add contrasting textures." - Michelin Inspector

Air Itam Sister Curry Mee is a true Penang classic, now run by the 3rd generation. The stall is very simple, but the taste is easily one of the best curry mee I’ve had. The broth is light and fragrant, and while the toppings are kept basic - just tauhu, taugeh, and their signature sambal , it’s packed with flavor. Each bowl costs only RM6.50, which is very cheap for such an iconic dish. Service was fast too, as I got mine within 5 minutes. You can also order and dine in at the coffee shop right opposite the stall for a more comfortable experience. They usually sell out by 11am, so it’s best to go early. I had mine on a rainy day, and that hot, flavorful bowl was just chef’s kiss , pure comfort food. A humble, authentic dish that you shouldn’t miss when in Penang.

Air Itam Sisters Curry Mee – A Pilgrimage Worth Every Step If there is one reason people journey up this hill, into Air Itam, across Penang, through Malaysia, and all the way to Asia itself, it’s the legendary Air Itam Sisters Curry Mee stall. This humble corner is nothing short of culinary magic. The moment the bowl arrives, rich with its aromatic broth and glistening with spices that have been perfected over generations, you understand why this place has earned near-mythical status. The curry mee is exceptional—authentic, soulful, and bursting with flavours that linger long after the meal ends. Every spoonful tells a story: the depth of the coconut broth, the gentle kick of chilli, the freshness of the toppings, and the unmistakable care that the Sisters pour into each bowl. We also tried the chee cheong fun, and it was a delightful surprise in its own right—smooth, savoury, and beautifully balanced. Enjoyed against the backdrop of the mountain, breakfast here becomes more than a meal; it’s an experience. The misty morning air, the quiet hum of the surroundings, and the warmth of the food all come together in perfect harmony. Air Itam Sisters Curry Mee isn’t just a breakfast stop—it’s a destination. A treasure. A reason to climb the hill and taste Penang at its very best.

Hmm. I wasn't really impressed. And it's not due to the dining environment. I don't judge the surrounding as this is a roadside stall. It's very local actually and gives you the real penang roadside experience rather than the sterile generic look that new cafes exude. As for the curry, it comes white with separate chili for you to add as per your personal choice. I just warn you, it's spicy. Be careful how much you add. I found it a little watery though. And most importantly even though I added quite a lot of spice, the balance was off. The spicy was excessive when compared to the other flavour that was supposed to balance it out. Fortunately the noodle was deliciously chewy. There's the usual expected blood jelly, taugeh and tau pok. The sotong was more than usual. But strangely there were no cockles and long beans which i thought was standard in curry mee. Parking here is a big issue and I gotta say, each diner has got to make the decision on whether it's worth it to fight for a parking space to come here to eat.

Service: Total scam. The lady asked us to sit at the area opposite their shop (it was a drink store). After ordering the curry mee, the drink store aunty told us we must order drinks from her becos we sitting at her area. We said we were assigned the seats by the curry mee lady. Then the aunty said “becos there’s too many of yall. Yall must order drinks from me”. But all she left was barley drink becos she said she’s closing shop already. Food: Lower than average standard. The curry was diluted and oily. I wonder how did it get Michelin star? Overall, don’t come here. Not worth the travelling. And not worth the service received. Scam and sus.

Google
Their curry mee was great. The soup broth was flavourful and spicy. Personally I prefer it to be more coconut but that is just my preference. The toppings are nothing to brag about and decent. You do not sit at where they sell the noodle, you are to sit opposite the shop itself. Price was reasonable for what it is. You should try this famous store.

2 Sisters Curry Mee Located in the midst of a morning pasar malam market. 2 Sisters Curry mee stall is a simple setup with no frills. The dish itself is also a simple one with pork blood, few pcs of Cuttlefish and taupok. We ordered the mix beehoon/mee. Heard a lot about it but I was rather disappointed. The chilli offered had a raw taste and super spicy, which we didn't know. In any case, the Curry mee didn't quite measure up. The taste didn't quite come out for some reason. Maybe it's just my own taste expectations. But many stalls of the same thg we have tried was about the same or better. That said, they still have a steady stream of locals coming up to order non-stop. Their flavour may be adapted to the locals. If you are around the Ayer Itam area,  no harm coming to give it a shot.  The buzz is this vicinity itself is quite a sight.  Do take note that on a weekend morning,  parking can be rather stressful, that is if you are driving

Google
Just outside this church, you’ll find a little lane (be careful crossing the road) with curry Mee, chee cheong fun and char kway teow. So good! The curry mee is thin but flavorful, not much coconut milk taste. The CCF is chewy and tasty with the peanut sauce. The CKT has that wok-aroma and very well done. Would not miss this place when in Penang.

Located beside the main air itam market street. Came here for breakfast. Didn’t see the both sister here, but only a young lady preparing the curry mee. The curry mee more towards sweet side. Cost rm8 per bowl. Able to seat anywhere opposite cafe.

Yelp
I would consider a must stop if visiting the nearby Kek Lok Si temple. They open very early and close soon after midday so we stopped before we hit up the temple. The Curry mee broth was robust and silky smooth. The blood cake ( lone of my favorite soup additions but not for everyone) was unbelievably fresh with a great texture. Noodles were cooked to the perfect doneness. Has ultimate street food vibes with quick and friendly service.

Yelp
Not bad in broth, noodles and ingredients. Two types of noodles inside (egg and vermicelli). One bowl costs RM5. Grandma was there to oversee the stall. Starts closing at 12:50pm. Be sure to get there before 1pm. Closed on Tuesdays.

Yelp
After doing the research on where to have the best curry mee in Penang I was not disappointed. The ladies are sisters in their 80s (almost 90?) who have been selling curry mee for over 60 years. They don't have a proper store but are located under a giant tree - the first left after you cross the creek heading uphill. Their curry mee will not disappoint with the combination of vermicelli and hokkein noodle, the coconuty soup base with the right amount of chilli. A must visit and a bargain at 8 ringgit!

Yelp
This famous stall is slightly overrated due to excessive media and social coverage but the taste of its curry mee certainly meets the standards (or slightly surpassed my expectation ). Will return for one more round whenever I'm in Penang. In fact we actually preferred the (Assam) laksa few blocks down the road, located at the corner of Ayer Itam wet market which deserves to be the best Penang laksa I've tasted so far!

Yelp
One of the most famous hawker food in Penang. Been around for more than 30 years so I guess it won't go wrong. The two sisters are very friendly and though it is just a few tables under a big tree but the atmosphere is great. Bustling with people on morning market making it a great remembrance...this is like the Penang heritage site
