Every time we visit Homer, we check in early to try and get a reservation for AJ's because the whole experience is not to be missed. From the moment you're greeted at the host stand, be prepared for first class dining. In Homer, AK you may ask?!? One of my favorite things about Alaska is the unexpected treasures like AJ's you can find at any turn.
We made online reservations, then got a text about 30 minutes prior to our appointed time letting us know that they could seat us early - perfect! We arrived and were promptly seated in a booth in the back dining room, next to a wall of bookshelves with an eclectic mix of titles. We enjoyed speculating where they all came from, whether they were a consolidated collection or a rag tag mix of favorites from the staff. After introductions and hearing the specials, we ordered a couple champagne cocktails from the bar to enjoy while we perused the menu. My French 75 was perfect, crisp and well-balanced, with obviously fresh squeezed lemon and a solid house sparkling.
From there, it was one decadent dish after another - highlights included the blue cheese topped house made potato chips, which if you're a fan of blue cheese you cannot miss. We also couldn't pass up the calamari, fried crisp and served with a slightly spicy mayo that I would love to be able to replicate at home. Next, I enjoyed a cup of the barley and bacon soup of the day, which needed a hint of salt but otherwise was the warm and filling goodness you would expect. Finally, we got to the main course - a beautiful medium rare filet topped with scallops, served with a side of summer squash and mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked to perfect, slightly red and warn all the way through, and I could have cut it with a butter knife it was so tender. The scallops were crisp on the outside, flash pan friend and succulent on the inside (TBH I prefer a steak & scallops to a steak & crab), and I added a side of blue cheese fondue to accompany both steak and scallops. This was an excellent choice.
At this point, we were absolutely too stuffed to order dessert, and we were kindly able to pack up a few opened bottles of wine to take home and enjoy by the campfire with s'mores. Another wonderful Alaska note: at a LOT of wonderful, fancy places you can open a bottle and cork the rest to take home. This is especially fantastic when you can't necessarily find that bottle retail in town. I've been known to open a new bottle with every course at Marx Bros. in Anchorage, then take home 6 bottles of half opened wine. But that's just me... Cheers!
