The 25 Best Maui Restaurants, According to a Local Expert | Eater

"Akamai (which means “smart” or “clever” in Hawaiian) offers 100-percent Maui-grown and roasted coffee. You can taste the quality in the cup, and the baristas know their business. In addition to perfectly foamy cappuccinos and lattes with decorative art, the cafe offers New Orleans-style cold brew with chicory and seasonal espresso drinks spiked with macadamia nut and butterscotch. To nosh on, try the sophisticated avocado toast sprinkled with microgreens or the Belgian waffle with berry compote. Beyond the cafes, Akamai operates two drive-up windows, one in Kīhei and another in Kahului. Know before you go: Snag a bag of award-winning Maui Mokka beans (pricey but worth it) to sip at home." - Shannon Wianecki

Hands down the best coffee I had in Maui! The beans are truly something else, rich, smooth, and full of flavor. You can tell they put real care into what they serve, and it shows in every sip. We ordered two lattes, one with brown sugar and one with vanilla, and both were amazing. The flavors were balanced, not overly sweet, and complemented the quality of the espresso perfectly. We also shared a cheese danish that my husband absolutely loved. He said it was one of the best he has ever had, and I have to agree -- buttery, flaky, and so fresh. The shop itself has such a fun, cozy vibe. There's even a swing inside, which adds such a unique and playful touch. It's the kind of place you actually want to hang out in, not just grab a coffee and go. Service was excellent. The barista was super friendly and even made the cutest latte art, which totally made my day. I ordered a 12 oz and loved that it came in a mug, while my husband got a 16 oz to-go. My only wish is that they would offer mugs for the larger sizes too. It would be a nice way to cut down on paper and plastic and make the experience even better. Overall, Akamai Coffee is a gem. Between the amazing drinks, delicious pastries, welcoming atmosphere, and thoughtful service, it's the kind of place you'll want to visit again and again. If you're in Maui, definitely make time to stop by. You won't regret it!

Google
Love this coffee shop. The coffee is the best in all of Hawaii in my opinion and it’s not even close. The specials, light to medium roasts and cold brew - I could have it every day. I buy merch every time I come to Maui from here. Great quality clothing and great styles and designs.

Google
10/10 recommend taking yourself or friends on little dates here. The vibe is cute, the food is always good, and the service is welcoming.

Google
Chill atmosphere with no wifi (deliberately). Got a mocha with light chocolate flavor and a nitro cold brew which was not as robust as I would have liked. Plenty of parking on the shopping center side.

Akamai Coffee: A Maui Must-Visit Located in the Kehei area, Akamai Coffee is an absolute gem for coffee lovers. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making every visit a delightful experience. The coffee itself is exceptional, with a fantastic array of unique and flavorful specialty drinks. I was particularly blown away by the Road to Hana (R2H), a hot masterpiece expertly crafted by my barista, Casey. Her infectious island smile and deep coffee knowledge elevated the entire experience. The coffee shop boasts a fun and relaxed atmosphere with quirky swinging chairs and both indoors and outdoors sesting options. Parking is available in the back, and they even have a convenient drive-thru. While tucked away in an office building, Akamai Coffee is definitely worth seeking out. I can’t wait to return for another cup of perfection. Highly recommended!

Google
This is possibly to most unfriendly and not customer service orientated coffee shop I have visited. The staff make you feel like you are inconveniencing them, and this was on more than one occasion. At my third visit early one morning (not sure why I even chose to go back), there were none of their usual glass cups at the water dispenser (i.e. they were not replenished as part of their store opening routine) and I had to call a person four times who was just on the other side of the counter before she raised her head as she was clearly ignoring me, to ask for cups. To which her colleague took plastic take out cups and slammed them down at the water dispenser in a very evident huff, and walked away. At which point I too walked away and went to Java Coffee Shop in the next door centre, and had a completely opposite experience - a warm friendly greeting, a thank you with a smile, and just an overall lovely experience. So my recommendation - skip this place and go to Java where you are appreciated as a paying customer.

Our original plan was to stop here on our way to do the Road to Hana, but we loved it so much we made sure to stop by the following morning (our last day in Maui) as well! The staff on both days were friendly and helpful. The coffee is delicious! They have some really fun and tasty specialty coffee options. I tried both the Hawaiian Honeybee and Road to Hana (iced) and enjoyed them both a lot. They have some fun hanging chairs as well as other seating areas inside, but we did think the interior felt warm (like there was no A/C or it wasn't on). There were a couple tables out front as well. We will definitely visit Akamai Coffee on future trips to Maui! Two thumbs up!

Google
Saw their coffee shop in a YouTube video and decided to give it a try as it wasn't far from where we were staying. Soooo glad I did. The Chocolate chip banana bread was excellent but the star of the show was the Nola Cold Brew.....WOW! Great tasting with just a hint of sweetness from the milk just as they describe it. I'm definitely going back before my vacation finishes!! Enjoy.

Yelp
It's a beautiful shop. So beautiful that I feared it would be all style and no substance. But they make a really good cup of coffee here! Liked it so much I went back a 2nd time during my vacation. The website says they have all Hawaiian coffee, but on my visits they had Mexican and Central American beans on offer. They were delicious regardless of origin. The specialty espresso drinks were good too. Loved that they had ceramic mugs for drinks on site.

Yelp
Akamai Coffee is a cute coffee shop recommended for its good coffee. There is a parking lot in the back and a drive-thru. Came here on a Sunday morning and it wasn't too busy. We are greeted by a staff member upon entering. It is light and bright inside with lots of plants and a merchandise area. There is a decent amount of seating and it seems like a good place to work or study. I ordered the Hawaiian Honeybee and substituted coconut milk as a dairy-frre alternative. The drink came quickly and tasted good. The coffee itself was seemed high quality. However, the texture was a bit off. Not sure if it was because of the coconut milk. Overall, giving Akamai Coffee a 4/5. Service, ambiance, and coffee are good. Would like to come back to try other drinks as well as their seasonal drinks.

Yelp
We enjoyed visiting onsite (8/31/25). They also have a drive through (9/1/25). Decent seating availability. Assorted merch, including serious coffee gear for pour overs & aeropress, and coffee roasts for purchase. There's enticing pastries and a huge slew of well crafted beverage items. I had a 20 oz iced mocha with quad shots. Amazing! The Homie had a 20 oz Hawaiian Honeybee with quad shots plus coconut, vanilla, and honey. Same orders on both visits. Welcoming and efficient service. Nice modern cafe vibe. Definitely recommended while in Kihei!

Yelp
N.O.L.A tasted amazing! The sign is easy to find but make sure you drive from the back of the building, which is easy to be missed!

Yelp
Never change, Akamai! I have high coffee standards, and this is probably my favorite coffee shop on the planet. The coffee is always perfect, not too sweet, the service is always exceptional, and it's a great place to sit and just...be. One of our family's most-looked-forward-to vacation stops, for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little coffee shop with some really delicious options. My friend got their surfer girl coffee which came with macadamia and caramel, which was incredible. I tried their summer seasonal coconut chai and was so happy with my choice. Will for sure be back

Yelp
I love Akamai Coffee!! My husband and I stopped by on a warm Sunday morning. It's a lovely space with lots of plants and ample seating. There is no wifi available, as they prioritize and emphasize personal human connections. This location also has a drive-thru! The baristas were very sweet and were happy to give out recommendations! My husband ordered the surfer girl latte (with caramel and macadamia nut) and I got the Hawaiian honeybee (with coconut, vanilla, and honey). My latte was SO SO YUMMY. The coconut flavor was so rich and paired perfectly with the warm notes of honey and vanilla -- yet those flavors didn't overpower the taste of the espresso. The surfer girl was good too! I loved the smoothness of the mac nut and how it was just subtle enough to let the coffee shine. (I liked mine better though LOL) We made a total of three visits during our time in Maui as this place was just too good. During our second visit, we both selected from their summer features -- I got the bougie bee (basically the Hawaiian honeybee with lavender) and my husband got the road to Lahaina (with white chocolate, mac nut, and toffee nut). They were good as well! I love a delicious lavender latte, but I will say in this case there was too much going on with the bougie bee. Also if you're not a fan of white chocolate, I wouldn't recommend the road to Lahaina as it's very strong in this latte. On our third visit, we got the surfer girl and Hawaiian honeybee again and it was just as good as the first time. They also sell coffee beans, so we bought some to take home to our family. STRONGLY RECOMMEND!

Yelp
Cute spot on Kihei rd. If you follow the gps it will take you to the parking lot. There is a drive through if you follow. If you pass it, you end up parking at Jack in the Box where it says you can't park. It's cute inside with plenty of seating. It was my first time so I needed time to review the menu. The barista recommended their top seller so c I went with it. It was a light touch of honey and not bold. I enjoyed it. Friendly and quick service.

Yelp
Hawaiian Honeybee with oat milk and less ice, I love you!!! So refreshing and satisfying and delicious. We did the drive-thru, which I'm not sure really saved any time, but was convenient all the same. Loved the taste of my drink, and while I feel $8 is steep for a 16oz drink, it felt on par with island prices and the added $1 for the oat milk.

Yelp
While we were in Maui, we wanted to find the best café in the area and this place definitely delivered. The vibe was so chill with all the greenery, great music, and tables. The staff was super friendly and made us feel right at home. The coffee was amazing, and my matcha was spot on!
google avatar

Dolonchapa C.

Yelp
Amazing coffee, great service, good bites - must stop if you're in the area :) The road to Hana is great, not overly sweet. Same with one of their fresh brews. They have a ton of coffee to choose from so you can take your pick. They roast everything locally :) They also have a chic decor so if you want to spend some time, this is the place
google avatar

Samantha J.

Yelp
Honestly, probably the best latte and nitro cold brew I've ever had. All the other glowing reviews convinced us to stop by for breakfast and coffee and Akamai did not disappoint! The interior is chic, clean, modern, embodies a good coffee shop. Baristas were quick to answer questions and friendly, and seemed to be really enjoying their jobs :) Hawaiian honeybee (oat milk) - 6/5 - the perfect balance of smooth espresso, creamy milk, flavorful yet not too sweet. This is what I wish every single other latte tasted like. Nitro cold brew - 5/5 - so smooth, rich, and even flavor, no sweetener or creamer needed. Delicious! Croissant sandwiches - 5/5 - both the Ham and Cheddar and Turkey and Havarti were soft, cheesy, ooey-gooey goodness! The perfect light breakfast (or snack) to compliment the coffee. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
Visiting Maui for the week and had to check out one of the island's exclusive coffee shop! The atmosphere here is warm and cozy, just what you want in a local coffee shop. The staff were welcoming and helpful. I was recommended one of their signature drinks (they have three to choose from), so I went with the Surfer Girl. It had delicious hints of caramel and macadamia nut. What I loved most was how well-balanced the drink was, you could really taste the espresso, milky richness, the sweet caramel, and that subtle nuttiness from the macadamia. So much flavor! My family tried an iced matcha with added vanilla syrup and a classic iced white mocha. They said the drinks were tasty and just delicious. There are many coffee spots around, but this one is definitely a must-visit!

Yelp
Love this coffee place. Great location with parking on the back. Clean, simple decoration but very tasteful. It has lots of places to sit down and sip your coffee, including a swing. We ordered a Capuccino and an Iced Matcha. Both of them were made to perfection and great product quality and size. Prices are more reasonable than other places. We also ordered the homemade chocolate banana bread, it was soo good. They offer different milk alternatives. Customer service is good. Always come to this coffeeshop while visiting Maui.

Yelp
Girl at counter was not a happy person - think she needs expresso? She recommended the Hawaiian Sugar Bee - not overly sweet, slightly bitter in a good way. I tried the black tea as well but it's too florally so I trashed it unfortunately. :/ nice atmosphere, would come back and try something else next time. Husband got Road to Hana and likes it.

Yelp
Akamai Coffee is a quaint coffee shop in the Kihei area. I went in for a pick me up and to do some quick work while waiting. The server greeted me immediately. There were only 2 staff members but they were working extremely well together. Serving both drive thru and in store customers. Akamai coffee is unique. Fresh packaged coffee and clothing is available for purchase. There was a lady enjoying a book in a white swing style rocker. Theres 2 of them. There's plenty of tables with outlets to talk, work or unwind. As I sat and enjoyed my hot chocolate music played in the background. Cool vibes of various artists. The hot chocolate was semi sweet. It was okay. But the atmosphere made up for the hot chocolate. It was just so relaxing. If I lived in Maui in this area, this would definitely be my favorite place.
google avatar

Delaney M.

Yelp
I love this place. Their S Kihei location has both dine in and a to go window. It's great coffee and non dairy options are available! Their food options are limited but yummy which is the only reason I say 4 stars. I would LOVE to see an extended food menu one day!!!
google avatar

Starr W.

Yelp
super cute coffee shop! it's located in a plaza, so there is plenty of parking. bathroom is shared with the rest of the plaza & you need a code. the staff were super friendly! we got the surfer girl iced coffee & banana bread and it was delicious.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
Akamai is the best coffee shop on the island, and I am glad they have a few locations. The Mac nut latte is very good and not too sweet. If you're a cold brew person, then the nitro cold brew is drink for you. The cold brew is so smooth that I don't need to add any sweeteners to it.
google avatar

Glenda N.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee shop! The perfect stop for your morning in Kihei. Open at 6am (perfect for parents whose toddlers wake up at 4am due to the time change haha just fyi not stroller friendly from the street). There is a back entrance where you can park and walk in. The ambiance is trendy, modern, and cozy. The service was so friendly and helpful! Plenty of seating. We got a large brewed coffee ($4), featured option - Maui sunset latte with oat milk ($7) and a chocolate chip banana bread ($3-4). The coffee was smooth and the latte was so tasty! The staff mentioned they really don't make anything overly sweet and the Maui sunset latte was a perfect nutty treat. The banana bread is more fluffy, less crumbly, and tasted more "clean" (not oily and heavy) which I loved! Highly recommend and would come back again!
google avatar

Kelly L.

Yelp
The staff is kind. We had a latte and bought a bag of beans to try, and both were mild in taste.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was good but coffee was soooo awful. It was bitter and burnt. Honestly couldn't drink it.

Yelp
Excellent third wave coffee. Excellent service. Nice mix of seating with modern coffeehouse vibes. For those looking to work all day, outlets are a bit sparse.

Yelp
Our favorite spot for good espresso drinks and coffee during our recent stay. I think the BIG disappointment though was that they currently do NOT have a kitchen- so all the photos of avo toast etc, I'm not sure if people just posted it on the wrong Akamai Coffee. They do have pastries, and a croissant sandwich. You can order ahead for this site (not the others yet) on their website, and they also have a drive through. Cute, simple decor, nice for hanging out. The two swings make a nice photo op, and they also have games lying around to play with. It's been a hot minute since I've played Mancala! Otherwise located in like an office building complex, ie dental offices haha so not much else to see. they don't have their own restroom, but give you code for the complex one. Baristas/cashier were all nice.

Maggie O.

Yelp
cute ambiance, quick service, and lots of beverage options. we came here to to study and do homework but they stated they don't have wifi but that's okay we just used our hotspot. there were lots of seating available which was great. got a decaf drink and that's the only thing that didn't meet my expectations- it tasted pretty watered down. everything else was great though. would definitely try it again!
google avatar

Annie T.

Yelp
The coffee was bomb I wished they had a location in California. Cute small place with no WiFi so you gotta revert back to the old days of talking to each other and not be on your phones.
google avatar

Bianca V.

Yelp
I was so excited to come here during my vacation to Maui/Kihei. The inside is so lovely, the staff were so kind, and my drink was delicious! I got an iced chai latte with macadamia nut syrup, oat milk, light ice, and whipped cream (I'm a former barista and usually make my drinks at home so I know what I like lol). I loved waiting in the hanging egg chairs too. Would have loved to spend more time here, but had to get going. My only complaint is I also bought a huge ot Hawaiian honeybee latte for my friend that was tasty, but not hot enough and the drive home was only 5 minutes.
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Favorite coffee on Maui. Skip Starbucks! I love the coconut macaroon and the hula girl drinks. Lines can be long, but it moves pretty quickly and is worth the wait.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with easy parking lot or drive thru that opens early for a perfect start to the morning.
google avatar

Brandi B.

Yelp
This coffee was terrible it was bitter and tasted burnt couldn't drink it even the people with me thought the same thing
google avatar

Euge L.

Yelp
Happily ordered some drinks. Drinks were forgotten about. Ten minutes later I had to remind them. Drip coffee was disgustingly bitter. They did offer a free taste which I should have taken. Nice people working there. Just coffee tastes bad and I didn't get my drink.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Such a cute coffee spot! This place is a bit hard to get to, but when you're there, there's tons of parking spots in front. There's also a drive thru or mobile order options to order on the go. Service was great. I ordered through my phone and was able to pick up my order within 10 mins. I got the cold brew which tasted really good and did the trick! Would come back for another.
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
This is a Maui coffee/ breakfast icon. You won't be disappointed by the drinks or food! Only the Wailea location has full food options though. The employees are always so kind and friendly. Each location has a green, clean, adorable aesthetic. It's great for grab and go or to stay a while and hangout with friends, read, or do a little work. Or in my case, most recently called a friend meeting to discuss if I should break up with my boyfriend. I personally LOVE the boujee bee drink with lavender, coconut, espresso and milk.
google avatar

Mari D.

Yelp
Whenever I feel the need to work in a different space or meet a friend for coffee, Akamai is my top place to go. The drinks are always good, workers and friendly, and vibes are vibin. Can't complain about anything!!
google avatar

Lea L.

Yelp
Akamai Coffee is our go to! You can either go in or do drive thru. We love their Honey Bee coffee. Their staff is the friendliest and the place is always spotless and organized. They are super dog friendly as well, Bagel is always happy to pop them a visit!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
We stopped at Akamai Coffee Co. on our way through Kihei. I appreciate the easy parking. The cafe has a really fun atmosphere. I ordered the Hawaiian Honeybee iced with almond milk. The drink is excellent. I love that the drinks here are not overly sweet. The menu has great options for the whole family. They also have some cool merchandise and single origin coffee beans for sale. If you are in the area, make the stop!
google avatar

Chelsey D.

Yelp
I enjoy a robust coffee, this was a tad bland for my taste pallet. With that being said the coffee shop was incredibly cute inside! Tons of flexible seating, games to play, and a water pitcher on hand to relax. Service was genuinely kind and quick. If you plan to work there-they do not offer WiFi. There is a sign that states they do this so that you will "connect" with another human-so keep that in mind if you were planning to work and sip.
google avatar

Victoria K.

Yelp

I tried both the Hawaiian Honeybee and Road to Hana (iced) and enjoyed them both a lot. Yelp
Good place to get a good coffee on Maui. Convenient parking lot on the back of the building with the access and drive through service. The shop is not specious but really comfortable and proportional area. Get in with busy time and lineup but flow. Coffee tastes great and the service was excellent. Nice decoration inside with a cute swing and games board area. Recommended!!
google avatar

Sana A.

Yelp
Service was great! The server had great energy. Some of the best coffee iv ever had. Simple, lots of options. The bagel was toasted well, tasted fresh. Inside and outside seating, chic, upscale, demure.
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
The service was very friendly. Great coffee with a nice patio to enjoy it. Would definitely recommend and will be returning.
google avatar

Joshua C.

Yelp
Overall very good! I consider myself a coffee snob and this is the best Maui has to offer. While it probably won't be the best you've ever had, it definitely falls in the "good" level of coffee shops.
google avatar

Elyse E.

Yelp
Here is my lettuce wrap that I added some of the salad because that was the avocado in the wrap that was very hard to find. I got up to ask if there's any hummus and they said no so literally it was a lettuce wrap for $20 with the tip included, it's very high-end and the customers were very snobby about seating but besides that at least they had a vegan option. my daughters Matcha was really plaIn. Will NOT return
google avatar

Roman V.

Yelp
I've enjoyed their coffee. The shop itself is nice with a friendly staff. I was able to bring out my laptop and work in this shop for a bit when I needed to get away from my room. The only down side was that there was no WiFi.
google avatar

De A.

Yelp
My car's battery died on me so I had to have somewhere to sit, out of the blazing Kihei sun, while I waited for AAA. I ordered a honey lavender latte, iced, and what a treat! I usually drink tea but the description seemed so tasty --- and it was! Light, milky, a hint of bitter chocolate, with some floral notes accented with the lavender. The music was light, charming synth-string pop. Nice atmosphere with the plants and decor.
google avatar

Susan Z.

Yelp
Love, LOVE this place! Best coffee drinks and breakfast and lunch items! All their food is fresh and staff are welcoming. My go to place to meet friends and family. Check out their merch and delicious coffee beans by the pound, and locally grown. Pick up a pastry or ball cap for your partner, pal or Mom and Dad. Prices are reasonable for the area and nice seating outside. What a view from the lanai! A must visit coffee house if you are visiting south Maui!!!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Excellent little coffee shop. Coffee is very good here and the staff is very friendly. I miss my friends smiling faces that work here, every morning my Dog and I would go here when we were living in Kihei. This place gets a little crazy in the AM, there is plenty of parking in back very close the shopping center. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed. Aloha my friends.

Yelp
We were really looking forward to this coffee shop.... But the drip coffee was not drinkable or enjoyable. It tasted sour and watered down. We took 5 sips and dumped them out.
