"Chef Tadashi Kimura incorporates Western dishes and flavors with Japanese ingredients and sensibility at this Yoshoku-style restaurant in a laid-back strip mall. First opened in 1991, Akane Chaya has weathered outdoor signs and a somewhat mismatched interior, but the smooth bebop jazz tunes keep everything classy. Service is attentive and cheerful, while the menu includes hefty portions of pork katsu curry, hamburg steak with demi-glace, and various kinds of pasta." - Matthew Kang

Yelp
The best Japanese spaghetti place ever!! I have been going here since I was a little girl & I absolutely love this place. This is a family owned place & their service is always so nice & so fast. The standouts for me is their fresh bread rolls which is made everyday & the beautiful unique Japanese pastas. Nothing compares to this place- it is my go to spot with my boyfriend & they even have a large portion (my boyfriends favorite) you can opt for if you are alittle hungrier that day!

Yelp
Stopped by here for lunch on a Saturday. This place is in the same plaza as Tokyo Central so it was convenient for us to do some grocery shopping while waiting for our table. We were seated in about 15 minutes. Service was just okay. I had begun to place my order saying my bf and I would be sharing the combination A, but before I was done ordering that dish, the waitress had pointed to a page noting there was a $15 minimum per person. I was cut off before I could even order our second dish, the seafood pasta. After explaining to her that we were planning to order another dish, she was apologetic but that had already kind of ruined the experience for me. We got the combination A with hamburger steak and tarako pasta. The hamburger steak was good and tender and I let my bf have the tarako pasta since I'm not a huge fan of roe. The seafood pasta was okay to me but nothing special. It could have used more flavor.

Yelp
Very delicious hamburg steak and seafood pasta. Plenty of parking Good service Food was made to order Everythjnf was delicious Hamburg steak was flavorful and very tender Akane style Sauce was amazing I loved thr seafood cream pasta - very light and delicate tasting So much seafood flavor Will definitely be back

Yelp
Went in on an early Saturday night. We had the combinations (Combo A and C). Both were excellent! The hamburger was soft and juicy. The Tonkatsu was great. Both spaghettis were fantastic. Service and ambiance was good. We definitely will come back!

Yelp
I've dined at Akane Chaya several times, but it had been a while since my last visit. I seem to recall a more extensive menu during my previous outings, and I was disappointed to find that one of my favorite dishes was no longer available--though it still appeared on the menu. Everything we tried was tasty, but it didn't quite live up to the deliciousness I remembered. Perhaps my taste buds have matured, or maybe I was just chasing the nostalgia of the past.

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for soooooo long! So I came by a few months ago, and with my luck: they were closed! (Temporarily at the time, but still!) But there's a reason for everything, right? The 2nd attempt was better given I had company: Hubbers, Mom and Big Bro! We came through around 7pm-ish on a random week. Not busy, so we were seated immediately. The menu is EXTENSIVE, so if you happen not to find anything you like, you're the problem. Hehehe.... But for real, though. However! I had plenty of time to screen through it before coming through, so I knew what I wanted: Combination B [Signature Hamburger Steak (9oz) with Akane Special Demi-Glace Sauce (Brown Sauce) AND Spaghetti of Asari Kinoko Cream Sauce (Chopped Clams and White & King Mushrooms with Cream Sauce)]. Came with a side of soup, salad and white rice. No apps needed. (I'm not even sure if they had any!) Everything is on this plate! And since it wasn't that busy, we all got our meals pretty fast. I wasn't sure what kind of soup I got with my meal - didn't bother asking, I was hungry (might be a sort of corn chowder with mirepoix). Needed a bit of seasoning, so fresh crushed black pepper fixed that. Whatever kinda soup it was, it wasn't bad. The salad was fresh and came with a slightly tangy dressing. The hamburger steak was seasoned well. Not sure about the demi-glacé sauce, it didn't really work for me, but it wasn't bad. The pasta was a good al dente but it's the sauce that makes it. The potato salad was a good palate cleanser! FOOD: 4. SERVICE: 4. VALUE: 4. Quality and quantity. We had enough for a 2nd meal. PARKING: Private lot shared with lotsa others. Not an issue up in these digs. OVERALL: 4. WARNING: Tons of food with the combos - maybe even enough to share with another. So, come hungry! There are way too many interesting plates I wanna try, so there will be future visits!

Yelp
I had lunch with my boys, It was a decent size restaurant with yummy hamburger steak, Japanese style and it was yummy. We had their signature hamburger steak with demi glaze sauce, pork cutlet curry, and hamburger steak with creamy pasta combo. I liked their hamburger steak, cutlet was good too but portion was bit small. Creamed pasta was bit bland. I saw few people having red sauce pasta with wea food, I like to try that next time and order their hamburger steak again.

Yelp
Another wonderful, showa-era vibe family restaurant in Gardena. The staff is friendly and attentive, the food delicious, and portions are massive! Our favorite pastas were the Tarako and Asari Kinoko Cream Sauce.

Shirley B.

Yelp
Food: this is one of my all time favorite pasta place, very comparable to the spoon house that's across the street in my very personal opinion. They give complimentary bread roll and salad prior to the main dish. The bread is soft and warm, great with a bit of balsamic, and salad is fresh and crunchy with mild dressing that is not too overpowering. And the pasta itself, wow, it's sheer perfection, cooked al dente every time so consistently. The harmony of ingredients and noodles and sauce are just fantastic, light and not too heavy. I am especially in love with their tarako cod roe pasta variety, but have tried bites from other dishes, which were just as great. Price: around $15 per pasta dish, which is very very reasonable given that they all come with salad and bread, and portion of the pasta is enough to make me full and satisfied. Ambiance: nice japanese casual vibe, it can get a little bit busy, I waited about 20 minutes prior to being seated before, but well worth the wait. There are about 10 ish individual tables inside. Great to come with family or friends for lunch or dinner. Service: overall just okay. My previous experience was muddled with poor service from a waitress, who brought us to a sticky table, didn't get us utensils, denied us bread that came with combo plate, and told us that they were out of hamburg steak while others were getting them served. But when I went back again with other friends, we had no big issues, they just forgot to offer us parmesan cheese with our pasta. Parking: restaurant is part of a large mall that also has tokyo central market, there is amble amount of parking spaces, no trouble finding a spot

Yelp
Japanese italian pasta is the name of the game here and I would definitely come back here again. Yes, spoon house is across the street but the sauce here doesn't feel as heavy. But I'm comparing apples and oranges. So to preface, I will have to say there's one waitress with clear frame glasses who kinda made our dining experience less than ideal. She forgot my utensils multiple times, tried to refuse me part of my order (the bread with my pork cutlet combo meal), and lied to me about the hamburg steak being sold out when other customers before and after us were clearly getting hamburg steak. Besides that, I'd say this is a pretty solid place. Tarako Kinoko Ika cream sauce akane style: This is one of the must gets, it's nice and creamy without being too heavy. The squid and mushroom mix really well together, and overall it's just a great dish. Pork cutlet combination: It's decent, but I really wanted the hamburg steak, dunno why the waitress lied to me about it being out of stock. Anyway, pork cutlet is good, it's got crunch, sauce, and tenderness. I'd very much like to come back here and hope for better circumstances next time. We shall see though!

Yelp
I love supporting small mom-and-pop restaurants, especially when the food is so good and comforting. They serve Japanese-Italian pasta with a variety of items on their menu. They give complementary bread with olive oil dip. The servers are super friendly and great at giving recommendations. I got their #25 Tarako Shrimp Kinoko with Basil which comes with cod roe, shrimp, basil, and mushrooms and I loved it! The portion is pretty big and there was a generous amount of cod roe mixed into the spaghetti noodles. The sauce was Akane style which was light with parsley, garlic, and piri piri. Overall I loved this spot and would definitely recommend checking them out!

Josh M.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the soup and hamburger steak at this interesting Japanese italian fusion restaurant. The noodles with meat sauce wasn't my favorite but it went well with the steak. Our waiter was working hard and was amazing. He was the only waiter there that I could see so props to him. Menu prices also seemed to have increased recently which is alright but I was expecting it to cost a little less. Either was 30 bucks for that much food can't complain.

Mia Kirsten S.

Yelp
As someone who absolutely LOVES Japanese-Italian fusion, I was so excited to discover this tiny restuarant here in Gardena! I ordered the #21 and my boyfriend got the Carbonara. Definitely hit the spot and the portion was PERFECT! The cream sauce was so perfect with the mushrooms & cod roe, definitely will be coming back just for this dish! Service was great, we got to give our order & recieved our order quickly. The jazz music with the dreamy lights also provided a calming atmosphere which perfectly tied together with the comforting dishes we enjoyed!

Suky O.

Yelp
I 100% agree with the review below of Leslie. I've been coming to this place for years and years, and I was extremely surprised when, a few weeks ago, the waitress told us to order three dishes! It was me, my husband, and my child, who doesn't eat much. We had already ordered a spaghetti dish and another combo that costs almost $30 to share with the child, but she demanded that we order another plate for the child! I felt betrayed after so many years of coming here, and it's not like we had ordered a small amount of food. On top of that, the new waitress was quite impolite... It's so sad because, with that attitude and new rule, I have zero desire to return, even though this place used to be one of my favorites!

Yelp
Akanae Chaya is a Japanese restaurant in Gardena that offers a variety of Japanese "Yoshoku" style pasta, curry, hamburg steak plates and more. I am a sucker for Japanese cod roe pasta hehehe. Akane Chaya was so good and I loved their version of it. Make sure to try their Japanese cod roe and Uni pasta! You won't regret your choices! A few of the items we got: - Seafood Cream Sauce Pasta - Tarako Kinoko Ika - Akane Style - Uni Shrimp Kinoko Soy Based Cream Sauce - Beef Curry The restaurant was small and cozy. And the service is super polite and attentive. Instagram: @jessgoeat

Yelp
Came back again for dinner and waited a while for a table, but still had a good time. The staff were SO nice and friendly. Relatively quiet restaurant with great food!

Sandra K.

Yelp
Food was very yummy! I got the hamburg steak akane style (which came with a mac salad scoop, corn soup?, and salad) but the cod roe pastas that my friends got were delicious as well! Getting seated (weekend dinner) and our food took a while but I think I would still come back for those pastas! I'd say the refillable ice tea was also worth it!

Reina Y.

Yelp
Had to wait about 15min on weekday dinner for party of 2. Tbh it was a mediocre restaurant. Taste wise mothing stands up nothing to say bad. Wish pasta had more sauce. Lots of options so willing to try other items!

Yelp
Say Hiya to Akane Chaya~ 3.5/5 | Hambuger Steak Akane Style | $14.50 Food: Each of the ingredients in this dish complemented each other perfectly. I would say it's the combination of everything together that really amplified the flavors. First, the Hamburger Steak is packed with flavor and soft and tender. The homemade sauce that comes with the steak makes it taste even better. Salad was fresh and the homemade dressing was tangy and flavorful. Service: PRO TIP: If you come before 12PM, you can get a FREE Hot Coffee or Iced Tea. I got the Iced Tea, and it went perfectly with the rest of my meal. The staff here were wonderful. Only two people were managing the restaurant, but they were amazing and attentive. Ambiance: The inside looks like a restaurant straight out of Japan! Very homey vibes. The restaurant is located inside a plaza with 4 boba shops, so there are good dessert places for round 2!

Amy M.

Yelp
OMG I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! My boyfriend and I always come because I am obsessed with their white sauce which is so yummy! I get the one with mushrooms and spinach and add bacon and I always finish it. The salad and hot pan comes with it and is so good! The service here is excellent overall I would recommend this place my tummy is always happy!

Maria F.

Yelp
It's a good alternative to the other similar restaurant across the street. The menu is slightly more extensive than the other restaurant. Depending on when you arrive, you may need to wait to get seated. While you wait, you can walk around the plaza and look at the other stores. They will call you when your table is ready. We ordered: Spaghetti with cod roe Curry with hot dog Both combos came with a salad. The curry came with bread. That bread is so good! Of the two dishes, the favorite was the spaghetti. The curry was a bit sweeter than expected. Adding Tabasco helped to cut through the sweetness. Once you're seated, service is quick and friendly. Enjoy!

Daniel J.

Yelp
Generous portions, delicious yoshoku food, and excellent service. This is great place to go eat if you're hungry and want to eat good food at reasonable prices. Be sure to try the hamburger steak if you haven't had it before!

Sandy H.

Yelp
I have gone here many times. Recently, I stopped dining at Akane Chaya because I just don't like their service and menu considering it's a Japanese restaurant. There are way better Japanese restaurants, but they are traditional and not "yooshoku" (Western style) mainly Japanese spaghetti. Last night I went with my family just to be with them since my in laws were in town. I ordered some spaghetti and hamburger dinner because what I asked for was no longer being made, but still on the menu. LOL. (3 times in the past I ordered it and was told that they were all out of it. Really, - just an egg omelet and fried rice.) So of my combination dinner, all I ate was the salad. Gave the corn chowder and dinner roll to a family member. I just couldn't eat the ketchup spaghetti or the bitter tasting burger. Brought it home, just to be polite. Made a sandwich. We ordered dessert and were told they didn't have it, or didn't want to serve it...something that didn't make sense. Read all of the other most recent reviews. One patron was told that dessert couldn't be ordered without ordering an entree. They seem to be always crowded with happy diners. I'm not one of them and will not go back.

Nicole H.

Yelp
Love coming here!! The service is always so good. They are so friendly here and make you feel very welcomed. The portions sizes are great and filling! There are so many pasta options on the menu, but my favorite thing to order is the Combination D. You get cream sauce mushroom pasta and Tonkatsu. This place is definitely worth it.

HerMajesty J C.

Yelp
Ate dinner here tonight with my family. The food here is always scrumptious. The service is quick and friendly. The ambience is greatly clean and cozy. I had my usual fav salmon spaghetti :) Anytime I want the best ever Japanese spaghetti, I just simply come here. This is the first and only place I think of and want to dine at. And I highly recommend anyone loving this kind of food to just come here. It gets busy on the weekends but it's so worth the wait. :) They have such great 40 plus years reputation of their food here. Impressive :)

Yelp
Definitely a nice surprise in Gardena. From the outside, this place looked ok. But once inside, this place is decent. The food is really good. We got the seafood pasta, mushroom pasta and pork cutlet/hamburger patty combo. Both pastas were spot on. Pork cutlet was a bit too over cooked and hamburger patty was nice and soft. These also came with salad, bread and one has a soup. The portions are on the smaller size even though this place isn't cheap. 3 people was $70 and we didn't order appetizers or drinks. Will think about coming back once I get paid or if we are celebrating something.

Kewpie P.

Yelp
I love their vongole (clam) pasta and bread here. The waiters were polite and friendly. A nice Japanese-style western dish restaurant.

Wan L.

Yelp
Go Big or Go Home and order the SUPER COMBO! I recommend combination B or D. Both combos includes the asari kinoko cream spaghetti (chopped clams, white and king mushrooms in cream sauce) and your choice of hamburger steak in demi-glace sauce (combo B) or 3 pieces of pork cutlet (combo D) plus soup, salad, potato salad and curry rice. The pasta had generous amounts of clams and mushrooms in a light cream sauce. The hamburger steak was tender and juicy and the pork cutlet was crispy and tender. The curry was good too. FYI, the combination portions are HUGE! See pic below. Food is made to order so please be patient. It is worth the wait! Tip: Go before noon and drinks are included with your meal. Friendly service Plenty of parking Extensive menu options I'll be back!

Vivi G.

Yelp
If you're wondering what to eat in the South Bay tonight, go to Akane Chaya! PROS: Beautiful ambience, delicious food, excellent service, and they play delightful jazz music! CONS: Prices may seem a bit high but pastas come with salad and bread, and the quality is worth it in my opinion. This is my favorite place for Japanese spaghetti. If you're not into pasta they also have classics like hamburg steak, cutlets, and curry. I've been coming here for 20+ years and the food never disappoints. I love their wide selection of pastas and the corn potato soup is amazing. The service has always been courteous, and the restaurant has a classy vibe with reasonably priced food. The drink menu is small but has all the necessities. I really enjoyed the Yuzu Liqueur which was light and refreshing like lemonade. Highly recommend!!! To all the Yelp users out there, please support Akane Chaya so I can continue to enjoy it for years to come. ;)

Tracy K.

Yelp
I love hamburger steak, so when I found a restaurant that serves hamburger steak, I was so excited to try it. This place is located in a huge strip mall, and it was easy to find. The parking was convenient as well. The server was friendly and attentive. Without even asking, she came by and refilled my iced tea. I ordered the combo with hamburger steak, meat sauce pasta, and a salad. However, I was underwhelmed. The steak was tender but lacked flavor and needed more sauce. The side meat pasta was on the sweet side. The salad dressing was just alright. Overall, the food was fine but nothing spectacular.

Matt P.

Yelp
Love this place. I've been maybe 5 or six times, only have ever ordered the clam pasta (Askari Kinika) with my only variable being either the meatball or pot cutlet combo. It's just really good. It's like Spoon House but just a bit better.

Tony L.

Yelp
Can't decide on Italian or Japanese food, why not just get both!? Akane does both with surgical precision. My wife and I opted for the Super Combo on our first visit to fully get a taste of what Akane was all about. We both opted for the cream mushroom pasta combos and we decided to get both the pork cutlet as well as the Hamburg Steak so that we would be able to share and try both items. The combo is a large portion of food so come hungry and prepare yourself with some stretchy pants. The port cutlet came in three pieces perfectly fried to perfection with a drizzle of katsu sauce , and the Hamburg Steak came perfectly cooked with a grilled outer layer and a tender inner center packed with flavor. The combo also comes with salad, potato salad and a small side of beef curry and rice. Make sure to come before noon and get free iced tea or coffee with unlimited refills. Keep in mind dishes are obviously made to order one at a time so be mindful of the wait for food and wait time to be seated. Service is A1 and prices are super reasonable. I will definitely be back to try some more signature items on the menu.

Ryan F.

Yelp
We came here for lunch on a Saturday and it was already busy right when it opened at 11:30pm. There were plenty of parking spots in front. We waited for 15 mins before we were sat. The place looks kinda old school. Nothing too fancy. The service was slow, but in their defense, the two servers working there seemed very busy. They were apologetic about the slow service. My rating is primarily for the food. It's good, but not great. It tasted like a home cooked meal that my mom would make. So I guess this would be a great alternative if you're too lazy to cook. The spaghetti was cooked perfectly but the flavors in everything was mid. They offered free ice tea or ice coffee before noon? which was nice.

Christa C.

Yelp
Some of the best pasta I've ever had and kind and attentive servers! Would highly recommend!

Elsa V.

Yelp
The beauty of simple ingredients when combined together... delicious food... tasty Old place with warm service, blues jazz, and good food. Will be back for the rest of the menu...

Julia H.

Yelp
1. Seafood cream sauce pasta: somewhat flavorless 2. Hamburg with meat sauce: the hamburg could be juicier with more flavor. Maybe I didn't get the right items. Might need to come back and try the more Japanese inspired pastas instead. They do have many different options to try.

Melisa C.

Yelp
Three years later and this has become our go to spot. We love the food here and the service is always great. It may be slow at times because they have limited kitchen staff (and one main chef!) but the food is always good and served hot. Better than Spoon House imo.

Diana C.

Yelp
We've been meaning to try this place for a while now. So good! The food was filling without feeling heavy. We ordered to go, but next time we'll eat inside!

Sarah A.

Yelp
Wowww. This is one of those restaurants where you have a really hard time deciding what you want because EVERYTHING sounds good. And I was not disappointed with what we had. We came here on a weekday night with some friends who have kiddos. They were super accommodating and very friendly, and made sure the kids had their own little water cups as well as little utensils. My fiancé and I shared two dishes, the Special Seafood Tomato and the "D" Super Combination which comes with a Pork Cutlet, Asari Kinoko Cream Sauce and a small curry with rice. Their portions are huuuuge and we were stuffed by the end. They also give you a generous amount of salad and their homemade bread is to die for! Everything tasted great and the pasta was cooked perfectly with lots of seafood. Even the pork cutlet was super crispy and exactly what I would expect out of a good pork cutlet. We'll definitely be coming back to try everything else on their menu. And thank you to the workers who were very patient with our indecisiveness and craziness with all the kids!

Erin Y.

Yelp
Akane Chaya is hand down my favorite Japanese restaurant to get authentic Japanese Hamburg steak. Their Hamburg steak is so tender and flavorful. I always order the combination of spaghetti and hamburg steak. The mushroom cream sauce spaghetti pasta is to die for!! Also, the portion sizes are huge which I LOVE!!

Shaun S.

Yelp
It's okay, ghr combo B was pretty decent, especially when you add the cheese a peppers. The service was really good and the parking g was easy. Overall, a 3.5 in my book.

Tina P.

Yelp
Why have I not tried this place sooner?! The hamburg steak is one of the best I've tried! The tonkatsu was a little dry, perhaps over cooked or just a leaner meat. The pasta that was part of the meal was delicious as well. Prices are reasonably priced and parking is plentiful. I will definitely come back!

Andreas R.

Yelp
A very classy yet casual Japanese meets Italian cuisine. Love the ambiance with jazzy music definitely helps with the mood especially after a long day at work. Sadly they were out of the ハンバーグ but do't worry, I want to try their classic omu rice with demiglace sauce and it hits every point in my palate. Service was fast and attentive as well which is the cherry on top. Definitely will comeback for the hamburger steak!

Victoria Ying J.

Yelp
Great food varieties, really tasty, with the touch of Western meeting eastern. Great service, quick and kindly with warm smile. Rich and colorful environment, welcoming and inviting. Five stars!

Dan Y.

Yelp
When I order curry I expect it to be hot and spicy. I asked for hot and I received mild. My wife ordered the hamburger and she was not impressed. I suppose I should have ordered the spaghetti but this was not an Italian restaurant.

Cory S.

Yelp
Food is good but service is bad. They don't pick up the phone. Don't bother calling for take out.

Tazo O.

Yelp
Probably the best "Yoshoku" (Western Food) restaurant in the Southbay area. I highly recommend the signature Hamburger Steak with Demi Glace sauce and Pasta combos. Have been coming here for years and the quality, value, and service never disappoint.

Maleerat P.

Yelp
This place is known for Japanese style pasta/spaghetti & Hamburg steak! This place has a home cooking feel but the food is high level in taste. Pretty authentic...it's like a neighborhood place you can go to every week. I love their Mentaiko (fish egg) & Ika(Squid) spaghetti. You can get cream sauce or lighter sauce. It is yummy and not so fishy. There are many variations you can order...I get "piri piri" and it has dried chilis in it. It comes with salad and bread. The salad is so so...nothing special. The bread is good . Most of the time bread comes out warm. If it's not warm you can ask them to warm it up... taste better! My hubby love to get Hamburg Steak.. He said it always juicy and yummy. Super soft and the Akane style with Demi glacé sauce is incredible. Super Japanese / European fusion food. This place has a parking lot sharing with supermarket and tea shops. The service is good... just sometimes if the restaurant is full, the service would be a little bit slow but still ok....not too bad. The food is always good though

Nina V.

Yelp
Super quaint Japanese restaurant! I love the ambiance in here - the jazz music really makes the meal lol. I ordered the hamburger steak and my boyfriend got the hamburger steak curry. I personally don't think I like how soft the hamburger steak is but that's also because I'm not used to hamburgers being that kind of texture. The curry was delicious though. The workers are super sweet and helpful. Will try to come back next time to try the pastas!
