"Akira Back—Michelin-starred chef and former pro-snowboarder—is opening his first UK restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair. The breathtaking dining room is inspired by the elements of earth, wind, and water—which roughly translates to a triple-height sky roof and a marble, circular staircase. The menu will reflect Back’s Korean heritage, have some Japanese influences, and be inspired by his global travels. Expect kimchi croissants and peanut and mushroom porridge for breakfast, cold tuna pizza at lunch, and wagyu bulgogi tacos for dinner. We recently checked out Akira Back. "Akira Back is a very shiny and very expensive Japanese spot inside the Mandarin Oriental Mayfair hotel, that’s perfect for people who are partial to VIP treatment and don’t really care about what’s on their plate. The hosts wear full-length black gowns, the roomy booths are the colour of Brunello Cucinelli cashmere, and the high-end raw fish remixes tend to get upstaged by dollops of ‘dynamite mayo’ and coleslaw. The signature rolls are named things like Hot Mess and tragically, the name is pretty on point. Think mystery sashimi pieces, some crunchy bits playing the ambitious role of tempura, and liberal pours of mild ponzu aioli. If you like your big-spend sushi experiences without jaw gymnastics and the lingering whiff of truffle oil, there are definitely better options in London. Booked for lunch as a celebration with my daughter and new son in law. Tremendous welcome, excellent service well prepared and presented food. This was my 3rd visit, experienced a consistent level of service. George is our hero, each visit. A must try place for a meal.

The atmosphere is a little dark and calm, making it suitable for a girls' night out or a date. The bibimbap and wagyu fried rice in particular had a truly traditional taste and I would love to go back to eat there again. Also, Sangho, the staff member in charge of our table, was very attentive to nice little details. The customer service is quite good! I think the reason we had such a comfortable time was because of the high level of service provided by the staff. Everything was delicious and it was a very satisfying evening. Thank you so much!

Exceptional dining experience at Akira Back in the new Mandarin Oriental Mayfair. Beautifully executed fusion dishes — from the tuna “pizza” to wagyu tacos — every plate was a surprise. The hazelnut dessert was a perfect finale, and the cocktails? I won’t spoil the surprise, but they won’t disappoint.

Absolutely loved the experience at Akira Back in Mandarin Oriental Mayfair. The dishes were beautifully presented and full of flavor — especially the A5 Wagyu Tataki and Dynamite Lobster. Service was attentive yet unobtrusive, and the atmosphere was refined but welcoming. A perfect spot for modern Japanese cuisine in the heart of London.

Excellent food, beautiful presentation and a wow ambiance!! The staff is very courteous and polite, made us feel very welcomed. The spider roll was phenomenal as were the lamb chops. The aubergine was topped with buratta which was excellent. The creamed spinach was really pretty and once deconstructed was even better in taste with sesame dressing and some notes of chilli oil. Another roll that caught our attention was the hot mess, it had a very tangy and spicy dressing that was poured on the rolls. Overall it was a great experience and will happily go back again and again.

Fab experience from start to finish. We loved the dynamite lobster and miso aubergine, although all the food was exceptional. Warm service and knowledgeable staff. The sommelier was funny, charming and suggested unique wine pairings from Greece and China that were very well chosen. A memorable evening.

I recently celebrated a birthday at Akira, and I must say, it was an overall fantastic experience! The food was excellent; the starter, especially the duck gyoza, was surprisingly delicious with its juicy filling. The tofu was bursting with flavor, and the main dishes were truly commendable. The only minor hiccup was the miso cod, which was a tad salty, but it didn’t diminish my enjoyment at all. To add a sweet touch to our celebration, the host surprised us with a complimentary cheesecake at the end of our meal. Such a thoughtful gesture made our birthday even more special! 🎂 However, I did have a small hiccup with the reservation process. When I booked, I was asked to upload a photo for the reception, but when I arrived, it felt a bit unnecessary as the receptionist still requested my information. A little disappointing, but it didn’t take away from the lovely evening. Overall, I highly recommend Akira for a delightful dining experience. The food was great, the service was kind, and they really know how to celebrate! 🍽️✨

We had a wonderful time at Akira Back! The service was wonderful and timely every time we needed anything. Food quality was amazing and all tasted fresh. There was a wide variety of offerings on the menu and surely would cater to any palates.
