The 38 Best Restaurants in New Delhi, India | Eater

"Price Range: $$ The Jama Masjid, a mosque built by emperor Shah Jahan (the man behind the Taj Mahal) is one of Delhi’s top attractions, but it’s worth visiting just to try some of the city’s best food nearby. The lane from the old city to the mosque is dotted with kebab shops and dessert spots, but for sit-down Old Delhi fare, head to Al Jawahar, which locals prefer to its oft-recommended neighbor Karim’s. Al Jawahar has basic tables, uniformed waiters, and an unchanging menu of classics, so bring friends and share a lunch of seekh kebabs (minced chicken spiced with coriander), thick and peppery mutton korma, and sheermal (sweet, saffron-dipped bread). Finish off with cardamom-spiked phirni rice pudding set in clay pots, and if you have room, a sweet, milky chai. Vibe check: Al Jawahar is one of the only places in the old city that accommodates longer, sit-down meals (complete with air conditioning)." - Sharanya Deepak

On the Grid : Karim's, Al Jawahar and Old Jawahar

"Karim's is often featured on conventional Old Delhi to-do lists, but the neighbouring Jawahar Hotel, run by the family who were originally landlords to Karim's, also deserves a mention. Named after India's first Prime Minister who once dined here, back in the 1940s, Al Jawahar, and its sibling Old Jawahar, has a legacy to live up to. While Karim's has always been famous for its kebabs, Al-Jawahar prepares a mean mutton korma. This trio of restaurants is conveniently located in the Matia Mahal area, west of Jama Masjid. Our recommendation is to go carnivorous all the way and mop up those meaty juices with the fresh, hot naans that they churn out all day!" - Delhi Dallying

Our experience was good.. Food: was tasty and decent quantity aswell. Dishes were clean and hygiene was maintained. Also the food was fresh and flavourfull.. Service: Staff was fast and respect full also pulled chairs for us. Rest spoke well and assisted us as required. Atmosphere: As I went late night was calm and quite peaceful no unwanted music was played and was place clean and nice. Not too elegant or too facncybut decent for a casual foodies dine in setup.

Recently I visited this restaurant to try Chicken Changezi or Chicken Korma but I tried the first one with Khamiri roti. Changezi chicken comes with tomato dominant gravy, so it's a little sour and full of spices, full of rogan(oil). Khamiri roti was quite huge than normal roti but soft. Salads and Green chutney was complimentary. Overall the dish was good but too oily. Serving staff and cleaning needs improvements.

Old Delhi is not just a place. It is a mood, a memory, and, if you are lucky, a meal. For me, that meal lives at Al Jawahar, just a few steps from the grand Jama Masjid. You do not just eat here. You step into Mughlai history, one bite at a time. I went with one goal: to sink my teeth into their famous seekh kebabs and khamiri roti. The second you walk in, the air hits you, spiced and smoky and completely irresistible. The kebabs arrive glistening, soft enough to melt at a nudge, carrying a spice blend so perfect you almost do not want to analyse it. You just close your eyes and savour. Then comes the khamiri roti, warm and pillowy, with a slight tang that plays beautifully with the richness of the meat. Together, they are not just a pairing. They are a love story. The place buzzes with chatter, clinking plates, and the hum of hungry people getting exactly what they came for. Friendly staff, no-frills charm, and food that speaks Delhi’s love language. If you want to know the real city, skip the tourist brochures. Come here, take that first bite, and you will understand everything.

I've heard so much about this place. I was super bummed about the food and the taste. Even the vibe wasn't as good as everyone said. The AC wasn't working or cooling the floor. We got the Mutton nihari, and it was the worst mutton I've ever had. It wasn't even chewable.

We ordered Mutton Gilfi kebab, Mutton Burrah, Butter Naan, Mutton Jahangiri and Chicken Changhezi. Food is very good and we went in peak time of Ramzaan. Staffs are generous. Quality and quantity is pretty good.

Foods are really delicious! But I personally liked kabab most. Furthermore I would say paya is the yummiest but their cooking style for Nihari should change, don't know why it is salty all the time. Last time I had Nihari it was not up to the mark at all, meat wasn’t tender, butter nan wasn’t soft but I prefer rumali roti!

Lots of space downstairs and upstairs. Was quite clean and relaxed compared to the chaos on the streets outside (during Ramadan). Chicken Changezi was delicious. The half quantity for Rs 550 is humongous. Can easily feed 3 people. Tandoori Roti was awesome too.

Just went to Al Jawahar at Jama Masjid as we were fed up with rude behavior of staff at Kareem's . Here at Al Jawahar Staff is very good. Excellent Khamiri Roti, the best in Delhi. You can have it alone without any dish.. Mutton Jahangiri and Mutton Nahari was good the only complaint is the pieces they serve are very small but great taste
