Al Margen

"Above anything else, the concept at Al Margen champions "taste through simplicity". This relaxed and informal restaurant alongside the estuary next to San Antón bridge, features a decor of highly original stone columns and hydraulic floor tiles that give it plenty of character, alongside bare tables and a semi-open kitchen at the entrance. The young chefs at the helm here, Adrián Leonelli and Pablo Valdearcos, have created a concise à la carte that showcases updated traditional cuisine that is technically accomplished yet fun and always built around the freshest seasonal produce. A tasting menu is also an option." - Michelin Inspector

A great Bib Gourmand find in Bilbao. From the starters, through the main, then ending with an awesome desert - it’s all you need do get energised to hit the streets after a great lunch or dinner. The lunch bib taster menu is decently priced (€50), the wine list and recommendations are sublimely paired to take you on a great experience.

We went here for the Bib Gourmand menu on a Thursday. Staff was very welcoming and explained the options well. It’s obvious that the broccoli is going to be awesome, as the walls are basically coated in broccoli, and it indeed was. We really liked the fact that flavours were so surprising without using any meat. We’re meat eaters and only noticed at the end that (besides a fish dish) we basically ate vegetarian. I did the drink pairing and didn’t care much for the non alcoholic drinks. It was interesting to try, but I would just stick to wine next time. Price is fair and you’ll definitely have a great evening. I would recommend going here.

Lovely tasting menu. Nicely paced. Excellent service and unique and interesting food. Wine parings were local and adeptly chosen. Warm color pallet of the restaurant really worked with the rainy winter day we came to eat.

Al Margen in Bilbao is an absolute gem, offering an incredible dining experience with a delightful atmosphere. The staff were attentive, professional, and eager to ensure everything was perfect throughout the meal. The food was outstanding, with every dish thoughtfully prepared and presented. The broccoli dish was a standout — so much so that we ordered it twice! Its flavors were both unique and comforting. Another highlight was the lobster rice dish, which was perfectly seasoned and full of rich flavors. In my opinion, Al Margen is Michelin star-worthy, thanks to its combination of exceptional food, impeccable service, and welcoming ambiance. A must-visit for food lovers in Bilbao!

Came here for a lunch with my wife & we booked in advance. The food is very tasty and the service is fast and attentive.

This I’m afraid is a tourist trap. There were few Spaniards, mainly tourists inside. Probably due to the fact it’s recommended by the Michelin guide. The food is inconsistent- every second dish was good. We chose the tasting menu but it’s just not that good. Let’s rate the dishes: 1. The cabbage was a nightmare with strawberries 2. The pea dish was somewhat ok. 3. The broccoli was good. 4. Mushroom risotto was too salty. 5. The hake fish was good. 6. One cannelloni with meat was a disaster of taste and texture - it basically oozed a meat turd. 7. The dessert was fine. In retrospect when the waiter asked to leave the dirty cutlery for the next dish should have been the first warning sign. Definitely would not recommend.

A great restaurant serving modern Basque food. A great priced tasting menu with a good wine pairing. The Tuna dish we had was particularly good. As was the Broccoli and the Pork Rice.

We had the tasting menu, and enjoyed every course. Most were vegetarian, plus one fish and one meat course. Things were very well explained, and the people running the restaurant clearly do so with enthusiasm. Courses were leisurely paced without dragging - in the end we spent nearly 2 hours there. Very recommendable experience/
