The Best Margaritas in Philly

"With locations in Havertown and Exton, this hotspot shakes up margaritas to fit every taste and budget. A single shot house margarita (with the option of six flavors to choice from) is just $11 or upgrade to a double shot version for just $15." - Ernest Owens, Eater Staff

Inside Al Pastor, the New Mexican Restaurant in Havertown | Eater Philly

"I'm reporting that a brand-new Mexican cantina is opening in Havertown this Thursday, March 7th: Al Pastor Havertown at 13W Benedict Avenue. The 3,600-square-foot restaurant seats about 80 indoors and features a 3,000-square-foot outdoor patio that will seat roughly 70, and it’s the eighth concept from Justin Weathers and Joe Monnich’s Stove and Co. Restaurant Group. The team intends for the space to be “that hot spot where city and suburb friends get together and hang out,” drawing diners from the Main Line, Western Suburbs, and Philadelphia, and the design was planned with that mix in mind; when the patio opens they expect it to be one of the biggest in the area and a magnet for margarita season and a “banging” happy hour. Diners can expect signature dishes like Mexican fried rice, tuna ceviche tostada, Mexican street corn salad, nachos, dragon tots, and tacos, plus vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options such as Al Pastor nachos and a spicy tempeh-and-veggies burrito. A full-service bar will specialize in tequila, margaritas, and specialty cocktails including the Tropicado martini (pineapple-infused tequila, fresh avocado, lime, coconut), the mezcalita (mezcal, fresh orange juice, lime, orange liqueur, orange bitters, tajin), and the Aztec old fashioned (Teremana reposado, Aztec chocolate bitters, agave, lemon peel). The grand opening is Thursday at 11 am; regular hours are Mondays–Thursdays 11 am–9 pm, Fridays and Saturdays 11 am–10 pm, and Sundays 11 am–8 pm, with the full dinner menu available all evening and a planned happy hour Monday–Friday 4 pm–6 pm starting next week. Reservations are available on Resy, and general or private-event inquiries can be made at (484) 455-4585 or events@stoveandco.com." - Ernest Owens

Saying the food here is delicious is an UNDERSTATEMENT! It’s such a lowkey spot. I’m pescatarian but I ordered the cauliflower bowl and the Fajitas no protein. BRUHHHHHHH Top Tier! Jack was our server, super down to earth guy. Easy to talk to. 10 out of 10 will definitely be back!

We went to Al Pastor on a Monday around 6 PM. The restaurant was cozy and the atmosphere was good for a relaxing dinner. We got the chips and traditional guacamole for $14. The chips were incredible - light and crisp but not too crunchy. The guac was okay, could have used more lime juice for brightness. For the entree I ordered the blackened shrimp tacos, 2 for $12. $6 for one taco is a bit excessive but at least the tacos were stuffed and the shrimp were flavored well. For dessert we shared the Mexican flan which was really disappointing. I had expected a pudding-like dessert but what we received was a very wet cake with whipped cream, sprinkles, and a maraschino cherry on top. Seemed like more of a tres leches cake doused in a caramel sauce. (I did check our receipt and flan was on there) Would I come back again? … Perhaps if a friend really insisted. I thought the food was overall decent but too pricey to not be blown away especially knowing the base price of all the ingredients. (Apologies for the poor quality photos, I was not expecting to upload them!)

Been here a couple of times now… food is very good. Service is friendly. Cocktails are pretty decent and creative! Good prices during happy hour. The room itself can be very loud. Build your own tacos is a very nice plate with the fixins’. Would recommend getting rid of the boards that the food is served on they look like they would contain a lot of germs since the wood is not sealed. Not many beans and corn on the nachos!

Google
This has to be the worst Mexican food I’ve ever had. The drinks were so sour we tried 2 different drinks and they were all disgusting. Even couple next to us expressed their disdain with their food/drinks and service due to the restaurants fire alarms going off for 20 mins. 3/10 would not recommend. Our waiter was nice though good luck Al Pastors hopefully you find new chefs and bartenders your atmosphere is beautiful but after that it goes down hill.

I love supporting local businesses. Ordered nachos and a chicken empanada on Toast app. Al Pastor has a great setup with a nice inside and outside area. When I went to get the food, I was told by the woman at the front that she was going to call me because they were out of chicken empanadas. But never got that call. They offered to make something else, and I ordered a chicken quesadilla, which arrived quickly. When I opened the food, everything on the non meat nachos had hardened from the wait. The chips looked to be store bought, and there was really nothing appetizing about them. The quesadilla appeared to be fried with some weird cheese on top. They smelled funny, so I threw them out without eating, and after a few bites of nachos tossed them as well. For the price of food these days, there should be a quality that does along with it. This was not good Mexican dood.

Google
AMAZING experience! Always have a fun time here. Our server Jasmine was absolutely amazing, a queen herself, 100/10 service. Recommend here to everyone. Each visit the food just keeps getting better and better. We got nachos with carnitas, pork tacos, shrimp tacos and margaritas. Picture of nachos below!! Absolutely will be returning!

Some of the food did not have enough seasoning and the onions over powder it took away from the food it self only thing me and my boy liked was the nachos and the wings

My mom and I came here the other day and let’s just say everything about here was amazing! We shared the chips, salsa, and queso with some drinks. Also, I’d like to give a huge thank you to my waitress Lilly who was so sweet! She made us feel so welcomed and was the highlight of our night. We definitely will come again!

Yelp
Al Pastor's taco Tuesday has me in a choke hold. The deals are unmatched and the bartenders are always cool with a good pour. I've had a bit of everything but I can say the La Playa Guac, their nachos, tacos, and wings are legit. Always down to come back.

Yelp
The restaurant looks cute, but that's all it has going for it. When picking up my takeout, I noticed the 3% card fee sign on the wall and trying to avoid it, gave them a $20.00 for $9.54 worth of tacos. After it took two people to figure out how to handle a cash transaction, a third one told me that they round change to the nearest .50 cents and that my purchase would be rounded up to $10.00. This is sloppiness that borders on grift -- if they do this for 25 cash customers per week for a year, the business will gain 1k! Seeing my displeasure, a waitresses did offer to overcompensate me by a dollar, which I appreciate very much, but again, if the business does this for 25 customers a week for a year, it'll lose 1k! Making matters worse, the tacos did not have guacamole, as ordered. Instead, the had a slice of avocado, which is not the same thing. The tacos were also terrible-- beans spiced badly and rice was old and crunchy. Not returning.

Yelp
We went to Al Pastor for happy hour and stayed for dinner. During happy hour, the margaritas were a great deal, and I particularly enjoyed their AP Pina which is made with pineapple-infused tequila and is garnished with a fresh pineapple. We also shared an empanada (there were 2) from the happy hour menu. The bar was lively, but once happy hour was over, we had made reservations to sit at a table in the attached dining room (the restaurant is small but there is a large outdoor patio). We started with the tortilla soup which could have used more cilantro, lime, and seasoning. The flavor was lacking. The same was true for the tiny bowl of ceviche I had as an entree for $18. It needed more cilantro, lime, and seasoning. Overall, that was the theme. More flavor, please. The dining room started to get loud, so fortunately we were finished. Next time, we'll just stay for happy hour.

Yelp
Great food and service . Our waiter was very friendly and accommodating. Will definitely be revisiting this restaurant.

Yelp
Came here with my partner for a lil taco celebration this weekend. I come for the margs and tacos but I stay because I love the vibez. Who doesn't love tacos, nachos, margaritas ?! Well besides my partner who doesn't drink during Ramadan so it was spirit-free for him. He tried the tropical avocado Fresca and the prickly pear lemonade. Yumm!! I'm normally a Cadillac Margarita girl as long as it's 100% blue agave and no box mix I'm good to go. I was a sucker for the Aztec Old Fashioned though and it was a great choice. Tuna tacos to die for. Overflowing with tuna. All the other tacos I tried I loved and pour me some of that hot salsa please. Staff was great and friendly. Happy to be there!

Yelp
Very fun place. We didn't have reservations so we decided to sit at the bar and we are glad we did. Staff is very professional and very nice. We had drinks and decided to split everything. We had the guacamole and chips, tuna appetizer, cauliflower tacos and fish tacos. Plenty of food for two people. Apologies as some of the pictures we already dug into the food :) Big screen televisions are all over the place so great place to watch a sports event. Will be back!

Yelp
Finally got around to trying Al Pastor for lunch. The weather was perfect and we sat outside on the really nice patio area. The service was fast, the food came out just as fast. I ordered the fried fish tacos with pickled cabbage and the wife got the Big daddy nachos with pulled pork and no jalapeños. The fried fish tacos had a nice big chunk of crispy fried fish and a lot of picked cabbage. Very good and a nice portion. The waitress warned us about the size of the Big daddy nachos and she was right to do so. If you want to share with 3 people order the full size. Otherwise I assume the "little daddy" is more than enough for one person. I'm also used to nachos at a lot of places being too much chips, not enough cheese and a meh about of meat. These are full loaded and I would definitely order them again. Also had the house margarita. What can I say other then it was a good margarita. I will definitely return and try something else on the menu or hit the bar for a margarita.

Yelp
The place is new and I went at an off time so hard to truly judge, but service was friendly. Food was good. My salad was a little bland but the tacos looked tasty. My pineapple margarita was tasty but not strong. They charge for chips and salsa. The salsa verde was tasty. The red, not so much. I'll return and try other menu items. And I'll either sit at the bar or along the wall. The front tables are chilly.

Yelp
So disappointed that the La Playa Guacamole came off the menu. I would dream about that stuff! Now that it is gone, I will probably not come in as much. That was special. New menu...not so much.

Yelp
Good food, friendly service, a great outdoor space for kids. It was really nice and easy to have a family dinner with minimal disturbance to other diners.

Yelp
Tasty! So great to have a polished taco place and margarita location with a beautiful patio in Havertown! Sat outside on their patio/veranda- nice ambiance and well-spaced tables- the inside looked very cool with a full bar. Salsas were fresh and homemade- chipotle and verde, served if you order chips +salsa. Good margarita selection and taco diversity. I ordered the nacho baby (more than enough to serve one) and it was tasty, although I would have preferred it to have more cheese than sour cream and sauces. Others enjoyed their tacos. Our lovely server Marcellus took great care of us. Overall good ambiance and bar, decent food! We'll be back as Havertown locals

Yelp
The food is simply awful. Low quality, odd flavored food. It doesn't taste like Mexican food. Tastes artificial and cheap. We had chicken tacos (bland) and steak quesadilla and chips and guac. It was all terrible. Won't be back.

Yelp
I would give 6 stars if I could!!! Such a great addition to Havertown! The food is delicious, love the vibe and the service is amazing!!! The pineapple express wings were AMAZING! I saw some instagram stories saying to get them and our server Marissa (who was the sweetest by the way) sealed the deal by saying awesome they were- she was right!!! I am not a huge wing person and could have eaten 20 of them! The guac is so good and fresh; served with warm chips. My husband and I both got fajitas- shrimp and steak, soooo good! Also the cucumber marg was great, strong (not mad about that) and delicious! Adding this in because my husband is a huge sports guy- the Phillies ended and within minutes they put on March Madness games- no awkward gap where you're watching infomercials for hours (it is his pet peeve haha). So happy that Al Pastor is in town! Can't wait to return!

Yasmean F.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot in H-town. I absolutely love the food and the staff is so amazing. The musical selections while we dine were great and prices are reasonable. The outside patio area is super cool and conveniently next to the quietest firehouse I've ever seen.

Yelp
Its a Gringo Mexican restaurant. Food was meh didn't deliver party of three we order multiple entrees shared and nothing stood put being the star of the show. Service was mid didn't comeback enough for drink refills enough surprised because restaurants make 40% of their profits on alcohol sales. 5/10 Meh wouldn't go back

Yelp
The menu was much more promising than the meal: The shrimp in my blackened shrimp taco was cold. I had already sent it back once because I asked for them to hold the corn and the tacos arrived at the table covered in corn. The soup was tasteless and lukewarm. Ordered my virgin margarita salted and the tiny mason jar appeared with a naked rim. The marg was almost too sour to drink (no simple syrup behind the bar?). I knew we were in for an awkward evening when our waitress's tone changed because we ordered no alcoholic drinks. We were hopeful to have a new Mexican restaurant open nearby but this has the feel of a tequila bar that serves food as an afterthought. The chips and salsa were the best part of the meal and that's not saying much. Olé.

John S.

Yelp
Jas, the manager, was very customer focused. Our experience was her main priority. Jas made sure our food was to our liking, which was super important to me. Mekala, our server, was awesome! I recommend you request her as your server when you visit this location, I promise you'll have a great experience! DJ the bar tender was great! Overall, each time these same people have made my experience memorable and great enough I'm posting a review. TAKE MY WORD, go see Jas and her crew at Al Pastor Havertown! You will not regret it! Believe it or not, John Smith!

Yelp
I usually go to the Exton location when I'm in the area. Tried out the new spot with my girl and it was on point as usual. I tried the non-alcoholic menu and enjoyed my tropical avocado Fresca. Delicious street corn, salsas and chips, crispy fish tacos, and the big kahuna burrito

Yelp
Had a really nice meal/experience here. Definitely worth a visit! The Mexican food was VG overall with fajitas and various taco dishes tried. We also got the nachos which was a large amount but I didn't love the thin pizza plate presentation as it made things more cooked and crunchy than I'd like. The margaritas (both spicy and regular) were VG and they have a small but impressive draft beer list. Inside atmosphere was a bit sports bar like (Phils game on) but to me that was a plus! It was also perfect for bringing kids along (added plus - it's next to a fire house). Our waitress was awesome - provided GREAT service and the outdoor area looks like it would be fun when it's a bit cooler

Kim D.

Yelp
The food was super bland. We first got the guac trio. Nothing to write home. Two out of the three were awful. I ordered the short rib tacos, my guest had shrimp tacos. The alcoholic drinks we ordered were straight juice.

Colin B.

Yelp
Fun quizzo! Wait staff was pleasant and quiz host was funny! Drinks and food were good and service was timely!

Scotty N.

Yelp
A fantastic new spot in Havertown! If you're looking for somewhere to grab a flavorful meal and a drink in a well curated environment, this is your place. The service was great, the staff were friendly and they knew the menu to make suggestions. If you're looking for a traditional hole-in-the-wall Mexican place, there are plenty around, but it's clear Al Pastor isn't trying to compete in that space. This is the place to go to have a drink, catch the game and hang with a crowd. I'd love to come back to eat on the patio. All of the dishes are creative, tasteful renditions of the classics. The Salsa Roja had a great smoky taste while the Salsa Verde was sweeter. The pork belly Al pastor was crispy with great flavor and the tortilla soup could feed 2 people as an appetizer(a half portion would've been plenty). I'll be back for sure!

Yelp
The environment was so lively! Our server was Michaela and she recommended the Birria tacos and the steak quesadilla! We loved them! Food and drinks came quickly and correctly. We loved our server Michaela I'd definitely recommend Al pastor to others!

Mark R.

Yelp
We love this place. The staff make the difference. They are so friendly and wait on us like we are their kids. The food is always delicious.

Jimmy T.

Yelp
Bland, suburban "Mexican". This place is the equivalent of a white girl, drunk on margaritas screaming taco Tuesday at Sunday brunch. Overpriced for what it is. Clearly an up and coming chain. "Modern Mexican" is insult to the country of Mexico.

Angel S.

Yelp
This place had a really cool atomsphere, great drinks, and the food was pretty good. What honestly made our experience though was our super personable and attentive server, Marcellus. He was quick with refills and answered all our questions. If our table made so much as eye contact across the room, he was on his way over and was really upbeat about whatever we needed. I don't usually like tomatoes, so I'm not much of a salsa person, but I really liked both the smoky and tomatillo salsas that come with the chips on his recommendation. I'm impressed!

Tina K.

Yelp
Went here for the first time to celebrate our grandmother. Our server was Marcellus and he was amazing and handled our large party perfectly! He was super helpful and patient. The guac was amazing as well as the strawberry martini!!!

Kit D.

Yelp
First time to this venue since Al Pastor came in after Town Tap. Got to sit outside on the new patio. In sum, this fills void for fun, family friendly places to eat al fresco with a nice, mellow ambience. Plenty of margarita options (went with jalapeño cucumber which was definitely spicy) and a decent beer list. Was impressed they had Tired Hands Hop Hands on tap. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was decent to good - had the shrimp fajitas. There are better places to go if you if you're going for authentic Mexican gold standards like tacos, enchiladas, and burritos (El Limon, Senoritas, Buena Vista), but it was good enough that we will definitely be back for the experience. And the prices are very reasonable. There's a decent kids menu and room for little ones to run around on the grass behind the patio. Another great addition to the ever expanding and nice restaurant scene in Havertown.

Yelp
Super busy on a rainy Saturday night. For two of us, we only had to wait 15 minutes. Started at the bar with two margaritas, which were delicious. We got seated and order the baby nachos with chicken. Delicious! We decided to get two different types of tacos to share, the blackened shrimp and spicy tuna. Absolutely amazing. We split the refried beans and rice side as well, it was the perfect portion to do so. The service was great and the atmosphere was so fun. We cannot wait to go back!

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
The food was great! I had the shrimp tacos, 10/10. I also had the baby nachos plate, which was still a pretty big size. Got a strawberry drop martini at the bar while I waited, and it was amazing!! However, my service once I got to the table really missed the mark, I had to wait until my entree just to get a water. I know this spot is relatively new but I think hiring some more experienced staff would be a benefit to keep all the tables happy. Overall, I would come again and recommend others to try!

Yelp
My cousin and I wanted to try this place because we seen a great review of it on TikTok. We went on Easter Sunday. I honestly thought it would be crowded because of the holiday but there were only like 10 people. There was a crowd at the bar but I later realized it was the staff. It took about five minutes or so for someone to come to the table and say hi. The waitress introduced herself and said " Sorry for the wait, can I get you guys some drinks on the house?". We agreed, she took our drink order and never returned. We were greeted again by another waiter who said he would be taking over. This guy seemed very nice but was very unorganized with taking our order. Because we had seen the great review on TikTok we wanted to try a few things. We got nachos, 2 orders of birria egg rolls, blackened shrimp tacos, crispy fish tacos, Mexican fried rice, 2 ordered of corn and a chicken burrito with tater tots from the kids menu. We ordered a lot expecting to take some of it home to share with our family. The nachos were just chips and pieces of corn and beans with a sprinkle of cheese. After eating the nachos with actual topping on it, 80% of the chips were still left....with nothing on it. Crispy fish tacos were mushy(we sent those back). Mexican fried rice was brunt throughout and load with unnecessary toppings. Birria egg rolls were dry and tasteless. The corn was sour. My 1 year old liked the meat in her burrito so that was good. The reason why I said our waiter was unorganized with taking our order is because the Mexican fried rice and corn did not come with the other food, we asked multiple times before it showed up and the second order of eggrolls, to take home, was never put in. We were ready to go after the nachos, but we wanted to give them a chance. We had two different managers come to the table to ask how we were doing and I know they could see it on my face that I was not happy with the food. We finally had enough and asked for the bill. When the bill came out, those free drinks that the first waitress gave us was on the bill, I ordered blackened shrimp tacos, but they put Birria tacos instead( which costed more ), and the mushy crispy tacos were on there. I talked to the waiter about it and he's like "yea I talked to the kitchen and that wasn't suppose to be on there". If the charges shouldn't have been on the bill, why were they? Were they trying to see if I would pay without mentioning it? Overall, our experience was awful. BTW, I think it's pretty telling that the business only responds to reviews that are 5 stars but don't leave comments under the bad reviews. I don't see this business lasting if this is the quality.

John D.

Yelp
Went there today for lunch with the family Great food, excellent service, great ambience
