Al Petes

"Situated amid the alleyways of the historic centre, Al Petes has a pleasant contemporary feel and is run by young, welcoming and friendly owners. Marko’s menu demonstrates an obvious preference for seafood, most of which comes from the Adriatic, and which is served with Mediterranean and even occasional Asian influences. The surprise tasting menu is highly recommended. Just around the corner, the restaurant’s small hotel (James Joyce) is the ideal choice for overnight accommodation." - Michelin Inspector

Quiet and elegant space for our party of 4 to dine in. Promptly seated when we arrived with our reservation. The pasta and clams dish that I ordered to start needed more flavour but my husband’s gnocchi dish was very flavourful. The grilled octopus dish was very well done, however the turbot fish dish that was served that evening was prepared as a “fish cake ring” that surprised our table and wasn’t quite explained that well. The servers seemed to be quite curt and abrupt with us and we it made us feel slightly like we were inconveniencing them. Overall felt the food was inconsistent for each dish (either great or not really) and experience was average.

A really good experience. We went for a few local wines recommended by the waiter - all amazing and spot in to our taste. *Ribolla Gialla Venezia Giulia IGT Ronco Severo *Malvasia Istriana, Zidarich *DECIMO DEL FAET Food was amazing as well. Spaghetti clams, very “ocean” fresh tasty, the fish perfect. The octopus cooked to perfection. the rabbit ravioli was fantastic. Really good value and recommendation.

The food per se is good & enjoyable. The atmosphere is ok. The portions were really small. (When I saw the pictures before going to the restaurant, they seemed bigger) The ingredients used are undoubtedly good, though the dish is pretty simple doesn’t justify the cost. Note: I enjoyed the different kinds of bread they brought.

We booked very short notice after finding Al Petes in the Michelin guide and seeing it was round the corner from our hotel. We decided to go for the tasting menu and really enjoyed it: creative and thoughtful dishes which were really varied. Highlights for me were the venison tartare and the cacio e pepe ravioli, but I didn't think there was a weak dish. Our waiter and sommelier were friendly and knowlegable, also incredibly patient and generous in explaining the detail of dishes and wine to us in English. We ended up drinking several delicious local wines by the glass which were all perfect to accompany the meal. All in all we couldn't have hoped for a better last night in Trieste.

Great restaurant in a small pedestrian street. Nice atmosphere inside and a few tables outside. Great food and very nice staff. Excellent meal and wine.

All in all it was a very good experience. The recommendation for the wine was spot on and the 2016 Pinot Grigio was very very good. Food balanced with nice flavours. Some good combination of flavours. The octopus and the rabbit ravioli were outstanding, also the turbot was very good. Excellent price value. 65€ for a 6 courses degustation menu is an exceptional value for money. Will be back 100%. Recommend for people that appreciate fine dining, if you want the usual Trieste restaurant then don’t come here as you will be disappointed.

We did the 10 course tasting menu (which was actually 14) with 4 glasses of local wine (sparkling, white, red and dessert) for 101 euros each. Really amazing food, I am surprised this restaurant doesnot have a Michelin star (but it will). Oh and the bread is totally yummy especially the blackcurrant crisp bread which is life changingly FAB-U-LOUS!

Al Petes did not disappoint, on the contrary. Food (tasting menu in our case) was wonderful with a nice variety, presentation and not the least taste. Impeccable service, topped by a nice, energetic and passionate sommerlier. The outdoor seating was providing a lovely, quiet and cosy atmosphere.
