"AL Quick Stop, the takeaway Mediterranean restaurant inside a convenience store on Waugh Street, is planning a second location in The Heights, according to Culturemap. The restaurant, which was originally supposed to expand into Railway Heights, will instead open at 518 West 1tth Street where it will be neighbors with Hando, the above-mentioned Kanpai Club. and The Bearded Baker. Owner Moe Elsaadi, who operates the restaurant and convenience store with his father Toufic, told Culturemap that the move will bring a much-needed infusion of Mediterranean cuisine into The Heights. The new location is expected to open in July." - Brittanie Shey

Google
Ordered at the Heights location. Great tasting food. We got the gyro quesadilla, a gyro cheese steak sandwich, and a gyro bowl subbing lettuce for rice. All were delicious! Ordered during rush hour and the food was still ready quickly. Thanks!

I really wanted to like this place more than I did. It was extremely hyped up to me by a friend who said it was the best falafel they ever had. I unfortunately did not have that same experience. The service was good, the kid at the front was nice enough and accommodating, but the food was just unfortunately mediocre. Falafel was ok at best. Bread was not my favorite. French fries were meh. Asked for extra hot sauce but it wasn’t slightly spicy. The hummus was probably the best part of the meal. Again, nothing was bad, but it just wasn’t great. Felt like an average Houston Halal spot.

Google
No tomatoes just a bunch of onions and meat. No tatziki sauce on the side. Thank god I got garlic sauce I guess. Original location is great but I’ve always had issues with my order at this location.

Google
great food! would highly recommend. I will be coming back for another visit!

Rick “DevilishReviews”

Google
The food was just okay, the Gyro meat was tasty, well seasoned and juicy, the chicken shawarma was very dry and the poorly seasoned. The sides weren't really good, the stuffed grape leaves (dolma) weren't really good the filling was very dry and tasteless, the Baklava was pretty tasty.

Lisa L.

Google
Very tasty and tender chicken shawarma taco. Could have more chicken in the shawarma but good nonetheless. Fries were flavorful and not salty. I like my fries a hint soggy and soft . Most fires are on the crunchier side.

Google
I am a regular at this spot. I love ordering one of their salads and topping it with gyro meat or chicken for a low carb/high protein option. Their food is always clean and high quality. Also, highly recommend the gyro fries and don't forget to add garlic sauce to every order for that extra yumminess.

Google
Quick shop for sure! Money well spent… delicious and stop only waited 5-8minutes for food to be ready… food did not last long lol

Evit J.

Yelp
Ordered shawarma. This isn't shawarma, it's a plain wrap. It was an alright wrap. Seasoned fries were good.

Sandra K.

Yelp
We got a gyro bowl and the gyro plate and added an extra pita. It was really delicious. My two year old loved all of it from the pita to the meet to the hummus and the veggies. Everything was fresh and hot and a good amount of food. Really pleased there's a store in the heights now.

Lauren R.

Yelp
We stopped by specifically for baklava since we were craving it. It was good and well priced. I personally like it a little bit sweeter, but I have a sweet tooth lol. It's still really good and not as gooey as some others I've tried. It's a very small shop, and parking lot is limited. My bf went in and said it was quick and easy to pickup! Will stop by again next time I have a craving for something sweet

Beth W.

Yelp
Was disappointed with my experience here. I have ordered from the original location many times in the past and loved it. This is my first visit to the heights spot and it was unfortunately subpar. Meat was overdone and crunchy, was original told they were out of tzatziki when our food was brought out but then they found some. Cauliflower was good! Overall just not the quality I expected or have seen in the past. Two small tables inside and window/bar seating. Parking is easy!

Angelica L.

Yelp
Wow. Such a disappointment. We got the schwarma plate and hummus with gyro. There was a lot of food but nothing was good. The chicken schwarma was extra, extra dry. It was a slow day so maybe the meat has been sitting out all day and they reheated it? That's what it tasted like. The salad that came with was confused about how it wanted to taste. The gyro was fine but the hummus tasted as if came from the grocery store. Finally, the pita was cold and hard. Atmosphere and service were lackluster.

Yelp
I ordered Gyro fries thru Lunchdrop. I took about 2 bites and the food was amazin, I opened the white sauce they give you to dipped my fries in it, when I opened it, it was a black hair in my sauce so It was easy to see. My hair in long blonde and black Don't was not my hair. No biggie... I removed the hair and just continued to eat my food. I'll leave the white sauce alone. took a few more bites of my food and it was another short black hair in my friea mixed with the melted cheese. I was disappointed at that point and couldn't eat the rest of my food. I would have given more start bcuz the food was good but I couldn't get past the hairs In my food.

Yelp
One of the best gyro sandwiches in Houston ( and I have eaten many at different places) the meat is very flavorful and tender. Ordered two from Uber Eats last week and my 18-year-old daughter thought it was wonderful. She asked for it again yesterday and I ordered them again. They also have amazing garlic sauce. Some Mediterranean restaurants offer garlic sauce, but it barely has any flavor. Not this one, it's amazing!!

Cynthia V.

Yelp
Came here for lunch on a Monday to eat-in. They have a couple of 2-seater tables and several counter seats, but most people were getting to-go. I opted for the Gyro Sandwich plus a side of fries and their garlic sauce (more like a garlic paste as it is quite thick). Food came out pretty fast, and piping hot. Fresh! Everything was top-notch: the meat was juicy and flavorful, the veggies were slightly roasted and soft, the pita wrapping soft and pillowy. Add to that a topping of the tzatziki sauce and it was heaven, certainly best gyro I have had in Houston. Fries were standard, but perfectly crisp with a soft interior. Garlic sauce was a great way to dip, but my breath is certainly suffering for it! I was very surprised by the size and variety in the menu from such a small place. Can't wait to come back and try some other items!

Yelp
Fresh, Authentic, and Delicious! I had the pleasure of dining at Al(s) Quick Stop in The Heights. The first time I ordered the platter it comes with fresh veggies, 2 meats on a bed of rice, hummus, and a very fluffy piece of Pita Bread. The meat is very fresh straight of the Rotisserie and moist, without the dryness in some restaurants off Hillcroft. On my second visit I had the chicken Shawarma Sandwich which is in my opinion the best in Houston! It was tender with fresh veggies and the garlic sauce is out of this world. I only imagine if I had added fries....cue (Homer Simpson GIF). It is nothing like the Halal Guys so do not expect the same flavors. I liken it to a true Mediterranean food experience. I reminisce on a good Hala Food Cart in NYC but fresher food! I also had the pleasure of meeting the owner. He was telling me the story about the name Al not Al's and his expansion into The Heights. My friend and I enjoyed his candor tremendously! If you're in The Heights don't sleep on Al Quick Stop. Good ownership and better food!

M J.

Yelp
Second time comming here and this time I tried the gyro sandwich and a side of French fries. the gyro meat itself was already sliced off the spit and simply warmed up on grill I would have preferred it freshly sliced the meat itself was still juicy however my main issue is the lack of flavoring. It doesn't set itself apart from many other gyros in town it make me feel like they all buy from the Sysco fries were hot fresh and season ok. Not much to write home about I probably won't be back but wish them well

Andrea M.

Yelp
I was excited to check this place out, but unfortunately it was not what I hoped for. The chicken was very dry and flavorless and was sitting on a bed of...Spanish rice? At least that it was it looked and tasted like (see pic). The hummus was okay. I enjoyed the pickled veggie on top. The tabbouleh wasn't too bad. It was probably the best thing on the plate. The pita was cold and seemed old. Maybe I should've gone to the other location? Maybe I should've ordered something else?Overall, I was just surprised by the low quality. It's rare that I don't finish my food, but I just couldn't. Otherwise, the service was good and the place looks cool on the inside, but I probably won't be back.

Kristi E.

Yelp
I drive from Kingwood to go to this place. The hummus is to die for, I could solely make that my meal. Make sure not to skip the baklava! The lamb is juicy and flavorful and the staff is always nice and happy to answer any questions.

Liz N.

Yelp
Finally got to check out the new heights location after frequenting the Montrose location for years! Same great food and service! My favorite is the gyro so today I got a gyro sandwich with some French fries. I LOVE their Tzatziki sauce-used every last bit they gave me! Come check them out-they serve breakfast from 10 AM to 1 PM so I gotta come back to try that!

Pooja K.

Yelp
We're long-time patrons of the old Waugh location, so were super pumped to see they'd opened a new spot closer to our house AND with indoor dining!  WHAT! That being said, we still just used it for takeout, lol. Can't really speak to the ambiance or service, though if the Waugh location is any indication, they're always prompt and friendly. FOOD Always. Delicious. In our family, we've got omnivores, carnivores, no-beef/no-pork -ers...they've got plenty to satisfy everyone. I feel like Al's puts the 'Halal Guys' schtick to shame. Gyro meat? Great. Chicken Shawarma? Great. Salads? Great. Hummus? Uhh....it's fine. Tzatziki? Great. Toum? Great. Even just the rice? Great. Yeah...'great'. Sure it's rice, but the combination of everything in a bowl is pretty close to Middle Eastern perfection. Have taken away food from this place so many nights and can't think of a time anyone eating was disappointed. Always a go-to when hankering for gyros or shawarma. Glad to have one in the Heights!

Ali A.

Yelp
Where do I start. I walked into the store waiting to pick up my order and noticed none of the workers wore gloves and touched everything bare hands after touching dirty rags. After going home and trying it, I can say the food tasted terrible. A weird taste and just bland. Had to throw the food away and Wasted $20 for something inedible. Very disappointed

Guest 8.

Yelp
I had this confused for the Waugh location (where the shawarma is a tastier), The chicken shawarma isn't an authentic style sandwich. The chicken was dry and quite thick and shawarma is supposed to be thinly sliced off of the chicken skewer. The seasoning was lacking some salt and the garlic sauce is a bit watered down. The lettuce used was old and wilted so it had a bitter taste. I would've like to loved this place due to its proximity but it's not authentic and the flavor is not there. Service was friendly and the place inside was very clean. PS. I did eat my entire sandwich

Paul B.

Yelp
Al Qucik Stop did not disappoint. Ordered falafel and mixed platter. Everything tasted fresh and amazing. Typically I like gyro, but like falafel and shawarma more, not here. The gyro is amazing, perfectly cooked, very impressed. Absolutely recommend and will be back!

enrique o.

Yelp
Gyro and shawarma were fresh, tasty! Made us come back for seconds! Quick to go order! Place is very clean

Brandy S.

Yelp
I was craving a Mediterranean bowl and have passed this place many times. I ordered the salad with gyro meat. I forgot to get tzatziki (personal taste) to add to it, but it needed nothing. Meat was perfection! Salad with herby with hint of lemon and just refreshing. I also got the lentil soup after trying a sample, and just so flavorful and delicious! I will definitely be back!

Willy N.

Yelp
I've been frequenting the original location for years! I was so surprised when I saw Al Quick Stop opened up a new spot. I definitely had to come give it a shot. On this visit, I went for the classic Gyro Plate. It tasted just like the original spot! Meats were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The rice and hummus were full of flavor. Overall, I had a great experience. Food was great and the staff were very friendly. The only downside is the parking lot is quite limited, so you may have to find street parking on a busier day.

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
We went and got to-go from this place - glad we weren't trying to eat there because it is pretty small, but all the food was still great ~20 minutes later at home. Gyro quesadilla was FABULOUS. 11/10. Falafel also good, both could have used some rice or other side - falafel came with hummus and some cucumber salad, but would have benefitted from pita or rice. Hummus supreme was also really good - only came with a little bit of pita though. Overall enjoyed everything - would have liked to see rice or more pita included though. Prices were on par with what I expect - I would go back. Some of the best Mediterranean in the heights.

Clay C.

Yelp
The cats pajamas of fast casual Mediterranean food. Gyro is sublime, garlic sauce and tzatziki are phenomenal. The hot pita ties everything together

D L.

Yelp
I really wanted to try this place because the menu looked very good and this place was delivering to our building. I'm sorry but no. I ordered the chicken skewers with rice, cucumber salad, hummus, and pita bread. The chicken was extremely dry and the only way I could pass it down was if I dipped it in the hummus. The hummus had no flavor and is it common to serve Mexican rice with Mediterranean food? The pita bread was cold which I wouldn't have minded too much but it was as if it had been nuked in the microwave because I couldn't even chew it. The only thing I could kind of enjoy was the cucumber salad. Needless to say, that was a great disappointment and I do not recommend this place at all. My coworker ordered the same thing and she couldn't eat her food either. Update: I see the owner stated I had the wrong business, my receipt below shows I did not. I may have gotten the name of the meal incorrect, it was the chicken shawarma plate that we got. Not trying to be ugly just stating how the food we received was.

Zara K.

Yelp
My sister and I stumbled upon this place when we were in the Heights! This is a fast casual restaurant and has limited seating indoors. I ordered the Gyro bowl with the lamb and beef over rice, the gyro sandwich and spicy potatoes. I also requested an extra side of pickles and they delivered! The meat was perfectly seasoned and just melted in your mouth! It was literally so good that when I took my food to go, I inhaled it as I sat in traffic. The spicy potatoes were good but a little too spicy for me so next time I'll ask for less spice! I can't recommend this place enough. Drop by if you're in the area!

Benedict B.

Yelp
We got the combination plate and it came with 3 pita bread. We also ordered baklava. The dish was well seasoned . I loved their balaclava- it didn't wasn't drowned with rose water like some places do and it was packed with a lot of pistachios. I would definitely go back again

Tabi N.

Yelp
Food was bland and light on toppings. It was basically dried old meat on bread. Surprised I even ate it. Was prob cus I spent money on it lol.

Bobby S.

Yelp
Good and fast service. Food was of pretty good quality too, but the flavors were sorta lacking. Like I'm from NYC and when you get a lamb over rice over there the food slaps. The rice here looked more like Spanish rice than mediterranean rice? Not sure what's up with that. Also the gyro bowl was pretty small. I guess it's a good thing if you're trying to watch calories. I had the chicken shawarma and the bread was kinda tough and chewy. The sauces were so-so. Overall it isn't bad but if you're located in the heights I expect better food. Eat at Gyro King off of OST they have food that slaps.

Jazheel C.

Yelp
I order from this place consistently on Uber Eats. Not only do they have amazing and tasty food but they're usually always running a buy one get one free promotion. The food always arrives warm and we'll prepared. I recommend the gyro and the chicken burrito.

Lydia N.

Yelp
I'm picky about my shawarma and thought this one was quite good! Not the best I've ever had, but still tasty. They didn't skimp on the chicken and it had good flavor. Really enjoyed the fries. This place was fast, cheap, and convenient. I'd go again.

Carla B.

Yelp
The hummus was good, but the meat was over fried on the griddle. The pita were hard and dry. Did not care for the tabouli. Two stars

Sha K.

Yelp
This place is a must if you're in Houston/heights! Best Mediterranean hands down in the area. You can't go wrong with their wraps and awesome sauces. Can't wait to go back!!

Millie M.

Yelp
I had problems with these guys. The younger brother was inappropriate with me. When I reported it to the older brother, he told me that his brother is "a good man.". Then I got food poisoning from the tabouli. When I told the older brother, he laughed at me and said he "didn't know.". This morning, we went there to eat. The younger brother immediately got on the phone -- presumably with his older brother -- then told my adult son that he "needed to talk to him.". He took him into the KITCHENM. They were gone about five minutes. When they returned, my son asked me what I wanted to eat that WASN'T in the prepared food section. Hmmm . . . the cultural differences proved insurmountable.

Geoffrey H.

Yelp
This place is legit and right off 11th and Yale by Hando! Spawning off from the OG Als off Waugh, this location offers the same mouthwatering Mediterranean eats with a Tex Mex twist on some of the classics that add an interesting mix and pack all the flavor! Sharp and modern all tile interior with a kept up clean bathroom. The space is efficient and set up to where you can sit down and enjoy your meal or grab and go for a quick lunch break. I ordered the chicken shawarma, gyro quesadilla and the classic hummus. They have several really good sauces to choose from. Sauce boss approves all 3 sauces.

Ivana S.

Yelp
So excited about this new location!! Has been and always will be the best gyro in Houston. It was always worth the drive to montrose but I'm happy to have them right in the neighborhood now. The staff is super friendly and the food is always fresh. Must try!

Saman E.

Yelp
Best gyro in Houston at reasonable price. Falafel is also arguably the best in houston. I've tried most of the menu items and it's pretty impressive how tasty everything is. This is the 2nd location, the original location has been around for like 30 years in Montrose. Happy they're now in the heights!

Amanda S.

Yelp
Enjoy the grape leaves and salads . Good good and service! I recommend it . Great location!

Cliff M.

Yelp
Amazing Mediterranean food here in the heights. My favorite foods here are the shawarma and cauliflower

Jennifer E.

Yelp
I'm so happy to now have an AL Quickstop in the Heights. This location only has Mediterranean food, no tacos or burgers but that's fine with me as that's all I ever got at the Montrose location. The food here is so incredibly tasty! My favorite take-out by far.

Storey B.

Yelp
First time trying this place and placed a to go order. I got the gyro wrap and added hot sauce. They didn't give me any tzatziki sauce? Probably could have been a very good gyro, but ended up being disappointed as a crucial part of the wrap, if not what ties it all together, was left out. I understand mistakes happen, but wow, what a bummer.

Rami M.

Yelp
The only thing missing from the Heights neighborhood these days was an authentic and healthy Mediterranean restaurant and like Batman and the bat-signal AL Quick Stop showed up on the scene and took care of the community. Upon entering the cozy location in the very trendy shopping center on 11th St I was greeted by the friendly staff and given a menu with fantastic options, I ordered a Gyro plate to-go but as soon as I saw the tasty meal that the staff had prepared for me I knew that I wasn't going to be able to make it back to my house without indulging so I sat right down and ate my meal in-store. The quality of the food surpassed even my highest expectations and I knew I had made the right decision. I'm already planning my next meal there and I can't wait to make AL Quick Stop a regular stop for my Mediterranean cravings!

Vaishoo B.

Yelp
Yum falafels!!!! Ordered incidentally and got some delicious falafel wraps! Definitely recommend!

Scott K.

Yelp
Got the gyro plate. They are very skimpy on the meat and kinda tastes like they bought meet from restaurant depot and put it on the stick. Do not recommend.

Brian K.

Yelp
Trust me you will not be disappointed their French fries and gyros are amazing and delicious!!!

Hannah S.

Yelp
Food was good but not great. Togo orders are very fast. Feta cheese appetizer was realllyyy salty would not recommend. Falafel bowl was fine. Not a ton of flavor even with the sauces. Gyro plate was good!

Penny G.

Yelp
Hm... I don't love it but I don't hate it. The location is great with plentiful parking. The server was nice and the service quick. The gyro was good size and meat was juicy. But I just didn't love it. Maybe it needed more veggies or seasoning on the onions/tomatoes? I'm not sure what is missing. I also got fries which were just ok. Prob would not get fries again. But overall will do if in a pinch and craving gyros.

M M.

Yelp
Ok y'all, if this place gets 5 stars, we all need to recalibrate and get out more. In the context of the amazing and diverse Houston food options, this was mediocre and forgettable. Nice friendly staff, but dry and unappetizing food.

R.E. C.

Yelp
If you already love the original then you're not going to be disappointed. This is hands-down the best Mediterranean food spot in town and the new location isn't skipping a beat! Highly recommend anything on the menu with gyro if you're a first timer.

Jonathan T.

Yelp
Super convenient location with plenty of parking right off of 11th street in the Heights. The service was great and food was ready really fast. Everything tasted fresh and delicious, probably the best Falafel in Houston. I'm really glad to finally have some fast and clean food with vegan options close by!

Cara B.

Yelp
Seriously delicious local Mediterranean spot. Owner and operator is there to serve. Support local!
