A Peruvian Pop-Up Is Opening Its First Restaurant in Oceanside | Eater San Diego

"A roving pop-up specializing in Peruvian food is opening its first restaurant in Oceanside; founders Stephan Garcia, Rhandy Heredia, and Angelo Luna have spent the past three years operating Al Toque Peruvian Kitchen out of a trailer, parking Thursday through Sunday at Five Suits Brewing in Vista and posting up at various spots throughout San Diego the rest of the week. Their menu includes Peruvian classics like lomo saltado, a Peruvian beef stir-fry with onions, tomato, and French fries that Al Toque makes with ribeye steak, and ceviche marinated in lime juice with rocoto peppers and served with the traditional accompaniments of boiled corn, sweet potato, and cancha (toasted corn nuts). The new 2,500-square-foot storefront will enable the partners to expand the menu and will feature flatscreen TVs, games, and a bar pouring draft beer and wine. Al Toque plans to continue its weekly pop-up at Five Suits while using the trailer for catering and events, and the partners say they hope to open at least six or seven more restaurants in the San Diego area." - Candice Woo

I’m from the East Coast and I’ve had my fair share of good Peruvian food, so when I say this place is amazing, this place is amazing! I sat at the bar and the service was amazing by both Rhandy and Badar. I got the ceviche to start and it was so fresh and delicious (don’t skip out on eating the sweet potato as it’s not your normal sweet potato, trust me!). Next I got the lomo saltado with steak and it was phenomenal! The fries weren’t soggy and they give you a generous amount of steak which was cooked perfectly. You’ll definitely catch me here again as I will now be a regular!

Google
Let me start off by saying that this place is absolutely amazing! We came to celebrate my sister’s birthday and we were encountered with the best service ever from Bader. Not only was he our server but also the chef!! You definitely taste the love in the food and overall the environment and energy he gave us felt like we were at home. Told us that whenever we stop by it’ll be like visiting family and it really meant a lot! Definitely coming back ☺️

This is the best Peruvian food I've eaten in my life. Both the ceviche and Loma Saltado are divine. The service was impeccable and the server was extremely courteous and attentive. I highly recommend this superior good experience.

I’ve never had Peruvian food and I just want to say it did not disappoint. Food was great! Presentation was just as impeccable and service was nothing like I’ve ever had before! You really feel like you’re in a close friend/ family’s home when dining here! The owners are very hands on and interact with the guest along with the food being equally as good! Overall, experience/ food was great and would definitely come back again!

Google
Al Torque is a hidden gem! We ordered the Platanos and Saltados (Ribeye). Both were excellent!!! Stefan our server was friendly and helpful. If you are thinking about trying this place…do it…it will soon become one of your favorites!

Everything about this meal was perfect. We called ahead of time to see if they took reservations and they did not. But Bader assured us that he would take care of us which he certainly did. The ceviche pescado was so fresh and tasty. It was a great way to start our meal. Ordered the especial lomo saltado which is a combination of ribeye, chicken, and shrimp and then the mar y Tierra was a combination of different seafoods. Both were plentiful with their protein with crispy fries served with white rice. You can change it to fried rice if you want or Ala pobre style which is a fried egg and plantains. Especial tallarin which is a Peruvian style pasta or chow mein packed with so much flavor. Everything we ate was a generous portion size and tasted absolutely delicious. We topped off this superb meal with alfajores which a delicate sandwich style cookies with a dulce de leche filling. It’s a light dessert that it’s the spot. Service was top notch - very friendly, inviting, family atmosphere and restaurant was very spacious. It’s located in a large shopping center so there is ample parking. It’s right off the 5 freeway so if you are driving by or through Oceanside it’s definitely worth a stop.

Google
We found this nice place on our trip on the West Cost. (We are Europeans) I had Ceviche also in Panama and Chile but honestly this was the best Ceviche I had in my whole life. Also all other meals were delicious Calamari, Ribeye and Camerones. The staff were absolutely friendly and found also time to talk with us. Thanks for the nice conversation. Highly recommended! A must-visit if you're here and want to have a smile on your face after eating. Greetings Sigi

Was in the area for the weekend and was craving Peruvian food for dinner. I ordered for pick-up via DoorDash and the process was a breeze. Food - DELICIOUS! I haven't had Peruvian food this good in a while. I usually base it on their bistec, lomo, and tallarin verde. The Tallarin Verde - Ribeye was awesome! The sauce wasn't running, held onto the pasta well, and tasted perfect. The ribeye was nicely seasoned and considering how thin the cut is, it was cooked perfectly! It wasn't overcooked like most places would do. They actually had some pink in the middle and wasn't rubbery. I loved it and because the portions were so large, I was able to split it for lunch the next day and it even held well after heating it back up! Service - Loved the staff who helped with my order. Granted, I did just order online and asked to pick it up, but the guy who handed me my order was extremely nice and lovely. Ambiance - Great space to dine inside. There's no patio, but their indoor dining space was nice. One room was for tables, front entrance had high tops and then people could sit at the counter where they can have a small view of the cooks/kitchen. I'll definitely come back!

Yelp
Here's a second review from me. I had the Tallarines a la Huancaina-Pollo for the first time and it was amazing the Parmesan creamy pasta was packed with a home style comfort food experience. The chicken breast was cooked to perfection with balanced spices to compliment the pasta Honestly I wasn't very hungry when I arrived but I wanted to finish my meal due to how good it tasted. I ended up ordering one to go for my lunch tomorrow since I live 70 miles away. 5/5 stars The Chicha is also a must to order. It reminds of Christmas fall holiday flavors. I got one of those to go as well. 5/5 starts The owners were gracious enough to put a specific football game on so we can see it while we eat. The ambiance was full of upbeat people celebrating a few birthdays!

Yelp
As daughter of a Peruvian I can tell you this place is very good. We got there at 12pm on a Saturday and there were only two tables occupied. We were seated, but it did take a while to get service since there was only one person for all the tables taking order, bringing food, etc. That for me is a downside since being a Saturday in December the restaurant should have more personnel. We ordered Maracuya Sour and Chicha Morada for drinks, which was really good. For food we ordered Fish Ceviche, Yuca Frita and Chaufa de Mariscos (Peruvian Fried Rice). Taste was truly Peruvian style. So the quality of the food made for the service, that is why I didn't put it 5 stars. Place is big with lots of tables and a big parking area.

Yelp
Parking was easy and the staff was very friendly. The ceviche was absolutely perfect. The potato dish was also perfect, but a few of the fries were spoiled, as you can see in the photo. The beef plate had good seasoning with the onions and rice, but the meat itself had a slightly odd taste. The chicken and rice plate was unfortunately dry. Overall it was a decent experience. I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but if I'm already in the area and hungry I'd stop by again....

Yelp
First time trying this spot out. In a strip mall with some parking, but there are lots of businesses there, so it is a little crowded. Inside the restaurant, plenty of seating, giant mural, nice ambiance, TV with sports playing, friendly staff. Service was good, the food was ready when promised, and they double bagged my order which was great because 1 bag would have broken with all of that food. We tried several different items. Calamari Crispy fried calamari, seasoned and lightly battered, served with our huancaina dipping sauce. Crispy fried calamari, seasoned and lightly battered, served with our huancaina dipping sauce. Yum. Tasty. That dipping sauce has a little kick, but it is a good taste. Saltados - Chicken & Ribeye A delicious duo of juicy chicken and tender ribeye, wok-tossed with onions, tomatoes, fries, and Peruvian spices, served with a side of rice. A delicious duo of juicy chicken and tender ribeye, wok-tossed with onions, tomatoes, fries, and Peruvian spices, served with a side of rice. Delicious. I was going to try to not eat it all, but it was good good and I devoured it. My least favorite part was the tomato chunks. Tallarín Verdes-Pollo Enjoy the bold flavors of our signature Peruvian green pasta! Spaghetti coated in a rich spinach and basil sauce, topped with a tender, flattened chicken breast (pollo) grilled to perfection. Good. I tried a bite. Not as good as my Saltados. Lomo A flavorful Peruvian fried rice dish with tender ribeye strips, scrambled eggs, green onions, and soy sauce, wok-tossed for a smoky finish. Yelp
We found this place while looking for Peruvian food in the area. Prepared to be wowed by the full wall mural as you walk in to the right. It's just so vibrant and full of energy. It gives the place such an upbeat feeling. I ordered the Tallarin Saltados Especial, with shrimp, chicken and beef. Such a dance of flavors! Loved the sauce so much, I could drink it. Service was friendly and speedy. I look forward to trying out more dishes here.

Yelp
Al Toque Peruvian Kitchen was highly recommended to me and after eating here, I totally get it. I've now been recommending it to everyone. The place is spacious and the service is attentive. The portions are generous and I recommend ordering a few dishes and enjoying it family style. My favorite dishes are the tallarine verde bistec and arroz con mariscos.

Yelp
Tried Al Toque while in Oceanside and it was a great find! We started with the calamari appetizer -- simple, crispy, and good. The Talla'nin Verdes-pollo was the star of the night, so flavorful and cooked perfectly. I also tried the Leche de Tigre which had awesome, bright flavors, but it's a little tough to share family style, so probably wouldn't order that one again. The Mariscos Chaufas was super tasty and full of flavor. For dessert, we couldn't resist the Alfajores -- you get a dozen in a little to-go box. They were soft, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth delicious and such a fun way to end the meal. Service was prompt and friendly. All in all, solid 4 stars -- tasty food, casual vibe, and we'd definitely come back next time we're in the area!

Yelp
Had the most delicious ceviche at this place! The service was also so wonderful, attentive, kind and friendly. This was my first time in the restaurant and I was very happy with my experience! I also loved the mural on the wall and the Peruvian decorations. My friend I went with lived in Peru for 2 years and said the food was very authentic and by far the best Peruvian food in the states he's had in awhile!

Yelp
Came in on Saturday evening and it wasn't too busy. Few different families so not loud at all. Food was absolutely amazing. My steak was made differently this time and I personally loved it so much more. Service has been consistent and the men always make us feel welcomed. I know I need to try something new on the menu but this has been so good. Steak with a creamy pasta, like what else could you ask for. My son had the pesto pasta and really enjoyed that. Even took home his leftovers and finished them later on that night. I mention that only because he hates left overs and that means he really enjoyed it. Will definitely be back to try something new.

Yelp
BRICK AND MORTOR (5 stars) - FOOD: delicious - PRICE: fair - SERVICE: attentive and excellent - AMBIANCE: in a plaza with ample seating Really good Peruvian food in north county San Diego in Oceanside. The people coming here seem to be local residence AND regulars. It's giving community vibes and I like that about these smaller beach towns. :: ORDER :: COMPLIMENTARY CANCHITA - aka Peruvian popcorn. Tiny bowl was served and nice to much on while waiting for your meal. INKA KOLA ($4) - you cannot have Peruvian food without an inka kola! You just can't. Their Inka Kola is served in a bottle (first for me as I have always had it in a can). For those who don't know the flavor - it resembles bubble gum in my opinion. HIGHLY RECOMMEND RIB EYE LOMO SALTADO ($21) - the portion to price and the quality of the meal matched the pricing. Equal ratio of vegetables:fries:ribeye:rice. Good execution of stir fry, the vegetables (tomatoes, onions) were sliced and cut into smaller pieces, still had shape, some crunch, but soft when eaten. The fries were skinny and soft from soaking up the sauce. The ribeye was cooked right, it had good texture and packed a punch. It was rich and tender. The slices were cut into thin strip and easy for consumption. Didn't find any fatty gelatinous pieces - all meat. The sauce that covered everything wasn't too saucy or soy saucy and provided balanced marination of salty, savory, and little bit of tangy. They provide a bottle of huacatay for you to control your own heat levels. A tiny dribble of this goes a long way and the heat can be felt. HIGHLY RECOMMEND I usually leave room for dessert but there wasn't any on the menu. It's okay, left very full and looking to return to the other items. Until the next review....

Yelp
Best authentic Peruvian restaurant in O-Side! Thanks to my brother who invited me to have lunch at Al Toque after my trip to San Diego. It was definitely a good stop in for lunch. The location is right off the 5 freeway so there's easy access to and from the freeway. I believe the owner doubles up as the waiter (and he also cooks!) and always checked on us and provided some awesome service. The restaurant has plenty of seats and offers a no-frills dining experience. The food was amazing! We shared the potato appetizer which was tasty and both of us ordered the Lomo Saltado which was perfect with the fries and rice. Definitely stopping in again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely delicious!! My friend ordered a daily special. I forgot what it was called, but it was basically shredded chicken in this yellow sauce with rice. Absolutely delicious!! She loved it. I ordered the Tallarin Verde with ribeye. It's a pesto pasta with onion, tomato and ribeye. So good! The service was great. I didn't catch the waiter's name, but he was extremely helpful when ordering and nice. He checked on us multiple times throughout the dinner too. The decor and mural in the restaurant was pretty cool. We got there at about 7:30pm and they close at 9pm, hence the photos of chairs up on the tables. (Close to closing time). I will definitely recommend this place to friends and family, and will be back!

Yelp
The food is better every time we go! And the service is incredible you feel like family.

Yelp
Love this place! My two favorite Peruvian places in North County used to be Panca and Q'ero. Panca for their quinoa cakes and Lomo Saltado, Q'ero for their Pernil de Chancho (some sort of crispy pork shank dish). Panca's permanently closed and Q'ero stopped selling the pork shank. So this has become my new favorite Peruvian spot just for their Lomo Saltado. If you're not familiar, it's steak with tomatoes and onions over french fries and rice. Their's is amazing! I have a shellfish allergy so they always make it without oyster sauce and they pull it off beautifully. They give you these corn nut like things for an appetizer, just like Q'ero used to. And then the green sauce here.... FIRE! It's almost like a hot sauce you can just squeeze over everything. The staff is extremely personable and friendly. The atmosphere isn't romantic at all, but if all you're trying to get done is eating a good dinner, it does just fine.

Yelp
Debated between a 3 and 4 for quite some time. The chaufa was the downer for me. It had a good texture with the soccarat, but it lacked flavor. The quality of the other things we tried convinced me to go to a 4. The pollo saltado was tasty and flavorful, and the fries were crispy, a rarity with that dish. The seafood noodle dish was quite good and tasty as well. Seafood was cooked well. One hidden gem: their maracuya drink is amazing. The crew is great, energetic and passionate about their craft. Also the large mural is awesome and embrace O'side. Good place to be

Yelp
Food was very tasty and service was great. There was an issue where there was a hair in one of our appetizers, which was gross but they provided us a new appetizer right away. I would 100% recommend this for authentic food.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place out, back when they were a food truck. I was excited to learn they had a location and in Oside. The staff were very welcoming and helpful in figuring what to order. I was impressed with how flavorful my order was. I definitely will be back.
google avatar

Frederick H.

Yelp
After an afternoon at the beach, we spun the restaurant randomizer wheel and ended up here (I actually had it bookmarked). This used to be a food truck but they recently relocated to this brick-and-mortar. Dinner was great. Fries, rice and meat are their specialty, and they're great. I really enjoyed my "Surf and Turf" with ribeye and shrimp. The appetizer peas were very tasty. The staff were very friendly and we enjoyed speaking to them in Spanish. Loved the mural on the wall. Will be back!

Yelp
The best place to eat in north county . The hospitality is outstanding, make you feel right at home . The Most delicious food around with a clean peaceful setting surrounded by the Peruvian culture and art. The host are always high energy and outgoing Make u feel like family. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone everytime!

Yelp
It's SO bomb and I didn't even dine-in! The, sweet, fried plantains with any of the savory dishes is the way to go, but you can't go wrong with Peruvian chicken. Their sauce game is ridiculous too!

Yelp
My wife and I go out to eat often and this place was very good. The rib eye saltado was delicious and I think anyone who enjoys onion and meat will enjoy it. I forget the name of my wife's plate but it was similar. The difference was the rib eye was not cut into pieces and instead of onions it came with plantains on the side and an egg over the meat. See my pics.
google avatar

Ruud N.

Yelp
Agreed on all other reviews! This place is a true gem... ceviche to die for, lime juice is awesome. Ditto on the saltado, beef is juicy, great fries to add. Service? Super honest and real - love the mural in a roomy and clean restaurant. Music may be a bit loud, yes, but still easy to have a conversation. We'll be back!

Yelp
LET ME TELL YOU !!!! Been to many Peruvian restaurants and this one is the ONE the seasonings and how it's cook its on point !!' BEST I HAVE EVER HAD cant wait to come back and try more of there plates Just a FYI I never write reviews but this place deserves it freaking delicious first timer .. blessings to this place great service from bader and rhandy

Yelp
The food was amazing! The place was clean! The service was amazing!!!!! Highly recommend it! Kid friendly and date worthy!

Yelp
I enjoyed the unique flavors of Al Toque, even though we ordered this as a work lunch delivery I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors and amount of food that they gave. The meat was plentiful and the amount they gave was quite generous. I enjoyed the green onions and grilled purple onions they added to my noodles and the sweetness of the plantains. I will say that one of the boxes broke and I'm sure it would have tasted much better in person.

Xin Yi Y.

Yelp
Second visit and it is still so delicious! Fried yucca is so good with the green chili sauce. I had creamy shredded chicken today and it was good. Stir fry rib eye was nom nom too, highly recommend!

Yelp
Great food! My foodie friend wanted something we didn't think was on menu but we got it and everything was delish! Sorry/ I have no idea what it was- rice with a chicken dish. They even served it on two plates as we were splitting meal. A plantation side dish which was very rich and I ate the next day- still tasty. The wine list was short and sweet. I love that they don't have a hundred choices but a couple good ones. Waiter brought wine to table and let me sample before choosing. Service couldn't of been better! There were several places to choose from sitting- and although nothing fancy it was comfy and in a good location. I will definitely be back!!

Yelp
The lomo saltado was off the hook and perfectly cooked. The owner and staff were all super friendly. This is a spot I would highly recommend for coming looking for great Peruvian.

Yelp
i've been here twice, and I must say that the second time was better than the first time. I ordered the Lomo Saltado both times. The second time was better than the first time, but both were delicious. My husband ordered the chauffeur and it was quite rice heavy but it had a nice mix of seafood and steak within the dish. Thinking the husband will order what I had the next time. What made this experience great was the owner. He sat with us to ask us how we liked our food and wondered if we had had this type of food before. I told him some places that I had experienced in Orange County and in Riverside County. He wrote the names down and I'm sure he'll be doing some recon to find out who his competition is in the Peruvian food space. I really enjoyed him and he was such a nice guy.In fact, everybody was super nice and service was impeccable. Not so busy the night that I went the first time but super packed on Saturday night on my second visit. Great vibe, great ambience, and great service.

Phil M.

Yelp
Food here is insanely good. It's rare to have peruvian chifa cuisine in SD and this is the best! I live all the way down south close to the border and this is totally worth the drive I got ala huancaina noodles were soo good. It was a cheese sauce but it was a very savory umami flavor to it. fried rice was also amazing. The aji verde sauce was soo good with the fried rice.
google avatar

Yelp
By far the best meal ive had this year. The Chicha(Peruvian Punch) was refreshing, flav & not too sweet. The Yucca was crunch & not oily. The Pescado was wonderful - just the perfect amount of acidity & spice and the sliced red onions were the perfect touch. High recommend trying their delicious food.

Yelp
I found Al Toque Peruvian Kitchen completely by accident while driving on the 5 freeway to South Orange County, and what an amazing find. I'm so glad I stopped. As soon as I walked in, I was warmly welcomed by two gentlemen working there. I didn't catch their names, but they were incredibly kind, professional, and working hard to manage a busy restaurant while still being attentive to every customer. That kind of service really stood out. I ordered to go and everything was packed with flavor. The ceviche mixto was hands down the best, as of you were eating it in Perú, so fresh, authentic and perfectly seasoned. My husband ordered the tallarín verde con pollo. It was good, but I have a feeling it would have been even better fresh out of the kitchen and eaten right there. I also got the arroz mar y tierra, and wow! it was absolute perfection. The portion was generous and every bite had a perfect balance of flavor. If you're ever nearby or even just passing through, this spot is definitely worth a stop. Real, delicious Peruvian food and welcoming service. I'll definitely be back

Yelp
Food, great! Ambiance, is good. Service, is not great. For the good, we really love Peruvian food and this absolutely the best in the area. The food is super tasty, flavorful, tender. All great. We normally get the lomo saltado, tallarin verde, and calamari and I loved all of it! I have gotten it to go one time and it does not travel that great so recommend eating it there. However, I would call the service maybe 3 stars. We've eaten there twice (once on a Friday, then a Monday) and both times we waited at the front to be seated for 5-10 minutes and watched that be consistent while we ate. The second time we were prepared so ordered right away but it still took extremely long to get our food (think ~40 minutes from ordering) and the appetizer (calamari) came way after entrees. Drinks wouldn't get refilled, had to flag someone down several times. The waiters are all nice, when you have their attention but they seem severely understaffed. I want to say they were just busy but both times the restaurant was only half full. I think the price of the food is a bit expensive for the lack of service. It's a bummer for us because we actually really enjoy the food so we're really hoping they fix the issue and hire more staff!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Peruvian restaurant! I compare all Peruvian restaurants to Mario's in LA and this was pretty close at least for their Lomo Saltado. The restaurant is bright and spacious with plenty of tables and a nice mural. Service was friendly and he made a helpful suggestion when we wanted to add an egg to one of our dishes but couldn't decide. He suggested A La Pobre which included 2 eggs and plantains so it was perfect for sharing. We also got the Tallarines Verde (pesto sauce) and the Calamari which was very flavorful as well. Can't wait to come back and try other dishes!

Yelp
I'm so excited this restaurant opened up in Oceanside. My husband and I have gone to Al Toque for years when they were a food truck serving out of Five Suits Brewing in Vista. Al Toque serves Peruvian dishes like stir fries, rice dishes, etc. So excited they opened up a storefront because everything is so incredibly delicious! We ordered the platanos fritos, papa a la huancaina, ribeye saltado (stirfry), and chicken chaufa (fried rice). The entrees were incredible, as were the platanos. The hibiscus drink was yummy too. The staff was so welcoming and friendly, and so excited we were there-- they said they wanted us to feel like family. There was a muralist painting while we were there and it looks like it'll be really cool- can't wait to go back and see the finished product. We're going to go back soon! It's a very welcome addition to Oceanside-- yay!!!

Yelp
This place is just the best. Casual vibe with super friendly service that complements delicious comfort food. The ceviche is citrusy, delicious, and presented well, and the chaufas are flavorful and satisfying. They have a nice beer selection, including 3 Peruvian kinds. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
This unassuming restaurant serves up amazing dishes. I've been there twice and the food has been incredible both times. The lomo saltado is to die for and their pasta dishes are top notch. The ceviche is also a must try. The restaurant is pretty casual, nothing fancy. I had the same server both times I visited. He was very friendly and courteous, but it looked like he was the only server for the whole restaurant on both visits so service was pretty slow. The food is amazing and worth the wait, hoping for speedier service on my next visit!

Yelp
Wow! I am Peruvian and stumbled into this place because I was in the area. Amazing! We had the ceviche de pescado and tallarines a la huancaina with lomo! Both so unique and delicious!!! Bater, our waiter, was top notch! So attentive and on top of everything! Will definitely come back with friends! We had already taken a bite of the ceviche before I took the photo. We couldn't wait!

Yelp
Did not realize this restaurant is actually a very nice-looking food truck! It was parked in front of Five Suits Brewing, in which we enjoyed our meal with delicious beer. The food was amazing! The fish ceviche was the best I have ever had anywhere! Loved the two types of corns, which complimented the fish in texture and flavor. It made my taste buds so happy! And the presentation was beautiful too. Husband got noodles with chicken. I got mar y tierras chaufas (land & sea fried rice). I preferred the rice, but glad we got the noodles to compare. I loved the seasonings (soy sauce umami!) and distribution of the proteins. Very balanced. Very satisfying. The two gentlemen running the business were pleasant and the food came out very hot and when they said it would. So so good.

Yelp
Good food at affordable prices. Quick and friendly service by the lady behind the counter. The place is a bit small and outdated, but I'm pleasantly satisfied. I'll be back!

Yelp
The food was incredible. The service is over the top friendly. So glad to see them move into a storefront from the food truck! Welcome to the neighborhood.
