Famous LA Gay Bar Owner Claims LGBT Discrimination by Alaska Airlines | Eater LA

"After a public Facebook post by David Cooley, I learned he alleges that he and his partner were removed from Alaska Airlines flight 1407 (originating at JFK and bound for Los Angeles) when a flight attendant asked his partner to give up a paid Premium Class seat and move to coach so an unnamed straight couple could sit together; given the choice to relinquish the seat or get off the plane, they left, calling the experience humiliating and discriminatory and urging others in the LGBTQ community to consider a boycott. Alaska Airlines says the situation was a seating error compounded by a full flight and a crew seeking an on-time departure, has apologized, says it has reached out to Cooley to make it right, and stressed its commitment to diversity and inclusion — noting Pride participation, work with LGBTQ nonprofits, an employee-led LGBTQ business resource group, and a perfect score on the HRC Equality Index." - Farley Elliott

Have been flying Alaska since they purchased Virgin America a few years ago, and I absolutely love this airline. I’ve never had a late flight. And I fly weekly. Sometime several times a week. Plus I fly international often. And still, have never had a delay. The people who work for Alaska are what makes it so special. Kind and genuine. The Alaska terminal at LAX is my favorite at the airport, modern and clean with a great selection of food options. And a very nice lounge.

I travel a ton for work and there is no other airline I'd rather travel on! They are very punctual! Their pilots are very kind and friendly. They have the most wonderfully kind and caring flight attendants. Even their gate agent are warm and polite! I love this airline and they are always my first choice for travel!

First time flying Alaska. They were super friendly, and the airplane was clean. Flight attendants were friendly and accommodating. Will definitely fly again.

Flight was delayed, gate had a loud and semi painful alarm/siren that rang out for much too long. At least our flight landed on time...

I’ve been flying with Alaska Airlines since 2021 and have consistently had great experiences. Their service is reliable and the staff are always helpful and courteous. As a Mileage Plan member, I really appreciate how rewarding the program is—I’ve been able to use a lot of miles for flights, which makes travel more affordable and accessible. Checking in at LAX with Alaska is smooth and efficient. One thing I really like is that they have scales available before you even check your bags, so you can make sure your luggage is within the weight limit and avoid any surprises at the counter. I also love that you can check in online and easily print your boarding pass at one of the kiosks—it saves a lot of time and hassle, especially at a busy airport like LAX. Overall, Alaska Airlines has earned my loyalty with their consistently good service, ease of use, and great mileage program. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a solid airline, especially if you’re flying through LAX.

I traveled with them this past long weekend and was very impressed with their customer service. Everything was efficient, and the vehicles were clean and appeared new. I would definitely travel with them again.

Nice stop at the Alaska lounge. It's a definite stop and relax getaway 😌✈️ #Lounge #Travel #Relaxation #Getaway #Alaska

Google
Airline customer service feels more like dealing with a utility company these days we just have to put up with the attitude if you are traveling. The desk staff acted like they’d rather not be bothered, which was disappointing. That said, the flight crew completely turned things around: professional, friendly, and genuinely fantastic. I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 2 solely because the crew made the experience worth it.

Yelp
We were a little late for our flight, mostly because of airport traffic and checking. We delta with a few really rude people, and we're stressed and frustrated. We were finally helped by Oscar Diaz at the agent desk and he was super nice and helpful and got us re booked on a different airline, for no additional costs. He was awesome and saved our vacation. He is the best.

Yelp
Alaska canceled my flight home I was connecting on a flight I booked through Alaska next flight was 12 hours later the next day. I called Alaska the agent said she was putting me in for a different flight. Getting home the right day connecting through Seattle. Confirmation comes back still through LA on same next day flight. Called again told they cannot switch other airlines. Also for hotel voucher they woun't book in advance for either hotel or food or I can book myself but they will only refund 150 total which doesn't exist in the market. The cheapest I could find was a Travel Lodge for 151+transfers and food. So exiting customs I have to go outside to connect hot bad air all the way to terminal 6 so almost the length of airport all carrying my luggage. I go to first Alaska agents I see, they cannot help me I have to go upstairs. I finally get to another agent and told to go to a different agent. Note all of this with back problems and mobility isssues. I'm in so much pain at this point and they are laughing and telling me to calm down. I explain to agent what's going on and what I need. A goof while later she informs me there are no more flights tonight. Duh I had told her that earlier. Once again I explain I need room etc. she asks why I missed my flight. Once again I explain I didn't miss any flights Alaska canceled my flight a bit later she again asks why I missed my flight cut to the end I've had to explain what happened 4 or 5 times, finally I get a voucher to Holliday Inn but only one meal voucher for over 12 hours though hotel breakfast doesn't start until after my flight is boarding. I guess my point is don't book Alaska through LAX as they do everything possible to make it as difficult as possible. Lucky I had taken an extra day off work so it didn't make me have to call out. Oh and the one food voucher? $12 I saw on the elevator Wednesday they run a special, burger , fries and a beer $26. TLDR Alaska saved money cancelling the flight (a few weeks out). Then makes the process as difficult for their customers who are inconvenienced. All while trying to avoid helping them in any way.

Yelp
I'm so mad, I forgot my Alaska credit card at home n was charged $70 for bags. AA, Delta, United never asked to see the card even though I never forgot their cards w me, they n Alaska have all the info when I booked n paid w Alaska card. I'll be charged $70 again on my return flight. The 1 star is for being greedy, I'm calling the credit card n nobody answered the phone 50 minutes listening to bs cackling n my phone is almost dead.

Yelp
Flew up to Everett to visit the grandkids. Alaska gave excellent service from my LAX check-in to my Everett arrival. The staff I interacted with were friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and helpful at every step in the trip. My return trip was interrupted by a medical emergency (first time my flight was diverted!). The pilot and flight staff were again professional and efficient. Glad to say the evacuee was able to answer the EMT's questions as they rolled her out. The Sacramento delay was no big deal, and the Alaska gate staff were very good keeping us updated on when we would re-board and finish the flight.

Yelp
Traveling to Costa Rica via Alaska airline. Been traveling with this airplane for the last decade or so. Easy & smooth checked in on app (with passport verification). Easy with pre TSA line and within 7mins from outside to the departure gate is not bad at all. Staff are nice and helpful. Overall, so far so good.

Yelp
First time flying with Alaska Air from LAX. Check in was a breeze. Jasmine was great. Very professional and kind. So far great experience other than the TSA check operations only had two lanes. Being disabled standing was more of a challenge. My Sister got me some assistance with a wheelchair escort to our departing gate. Wesley provided great customer service. He was kind and very professional. My flight has been delayed 3 times and I am just happy to be waiting at the gate. When boarding, Felipe assisted me. He was very considerate and professional. Felipe assisted my entire party and wished us a safe journey. "Pura Vida"

Yelp
Flying to Puerto Vallarta, this was the main hub and airlines that connects there. Hawaiian airlines operated by Alaska airlines. The gate was right after you walk in from TSA which is great. Don't have to worry about going far. Staff working the counter that morning was excellent. They were very friendly and quite funny when checking people in and when boarding the plane. Flight attendant was sweet on this flight. Even though it was a fast flight, it was nice and comfortable. Just like every airline, snacks could be updated beside the usual cookies or chips. The charger worked on the plane and watching movies was through your phone or devices.

Yelp
Pretty good airline. We flew Alaska from LAX-RNO, and got a pretty cheap fair. However, Southwest also had a similar fare when we flew down. Other than the annoying delays on SWA, they gave us a snack and drink of our choice, versus Alaska only gave us apple juice or water with no snack. My family and I normally fly American, but they have no direct flight to Reno, so we flew their one world partner Alaska, and some of our American benefits rolled over. My family was able to get upgraded and we got Advantage miles too for flying Alaska. Good deal. Annoyed about the food and beverage selections, but I was happy to have my advantage status roll over on Alaska Airlines. Would fly again.

Yelp
Alaska airlines is surprisingly, not headquartered in Alaska, but in Seattle. I have flown this airline a very long while back. They are now an aggressive competitor, really embedded in certain key market domains and fiercely competing with the legacy behemoths, like American, United and Delta. Therefore, for my first trip to Mazatlan from LAX, Alaska had the best deal, and I went for it, obviously. There are many positives. As far as I can see, Alaska has the best Airline App in the business. Their boarding pass surpasses others (even international carriers), with live info on boarding time (a digital clock), gate, flight info, changes. In flight, there is a permanent top banner on your phone that gives you a minute by minute update on how much more you have to endure the flight. There is seat info, arriving gate info, arrival time and even a bar that moves as the flight progresses. And as you get closer to landing, over 30 minutes, it drills it down to minutes AND seconds. Super impressive. However, what was missing on this communication when I left LAX, was the terminal information (if they wish to hit a home run). Are we supposed to assume it will be always Terminal 6? Oh well. Both inbound and outbound, I was upgraded free to premium class (due to my loyalty with their partner, American, and my good karma :). This upgrade generally costs $79, each way for this route. All these modifications were seamless. With this premium seating on board, there is more legroom (at least 4" additional), free snacks and drinks (including booze). There was only one round of this perk, into Mazatlan. But, if you negotiate, there was a second personal service, on the return. Charm, you might say :) Check in, gate service, and on board hospitality is excellent. They have charging ports for every seat. Watch out Spirit Airlines. Just one final parting note, some travel people are posting repetitive advertisements of unrelated matters on this page. Can the Yelp moderators in San Francisco take them down?

Yelp
(Traveled 07/08/23 SA @ 7:15am, 09/21/23 TH, and 11/14/23 TU... and several times before): I'll ask ya... how was the flight!? Alaska Airlines recently became one of my favorite airlines, and by default my airline of choice to/from Newark, New Jersey to visit a dear friend of mine. Additionally, they've also become my airline of choice to/from Honolulu, Hawaii. Unfortunately, my favorite domestic carrier Southwest Airlines no longer flew into Newark (the closest airports were in New York), and all other major carriers charged considerably higher. Plus, I was able to get mileage points! This was my story: PURCHASE Roundtrip Nonstop Airfare ($367.80): Since I booked the flight barely two weeks before its departure, this fare was well within my comfort level of $350.00 for any roundtrip domestic air travel during the high season (summer months). On a morning flight out of Los Angeles LAX that arrived in Newark EWR https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=lP8wPBF8kkNt7nkwKykZKg&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw around 3:55pm the same day, the nonstop flight departed and nearly arrived on-time. Damn I loved nonstop flights! Checked Luggage (N/A): Thankfully, I traveled light and only had a carry-on and backpack. Otherwise, they customarily charged $30.00/bag. With the exception of Southwest Airlines or you were a high-ranking passenger, basically all carriers charged for checked luggage. C'est la vie... FLIGHT EXPERIENCE ~Check-in: I checked-in online 24-hours prior, had my QR code boarding pass on their app, and traveled with only a carry-on and backpack, so I was ready to go! Then, it was off to the security checkpoints and through the necessary TSA pleasantries...which surprisingly went fairly quickly except for the unprepared few who had to take off their belts and shoes or remove their laptops from their bags. Once that was done, I was released to my plane's gate and left to my own devices with the excitement that always came when leaving on a vacation - sweet! ~Seats: Come on, it was the same sardine can like all airplanes these days, so unless you were in Business or First Class you got to know your neighbors to the left, right, front, and back of you! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Gm_EJA90CFGIOdEO_bSscw&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw ~In-flight Meals/Snacks (Varied; only snacks this instance): The drink cart along with a small packaged snack came out once we were at coasting altitude. Alcohol and some kind of food were made available for purchase. I normally didn't purchase such things on a flight. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=mE8QlTgT2c-JkIAZ7sK2ug&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw ~Lavatory: I got my business done at the one in the back of the plane. Plenty of toilet paper, paper towels, and facial tissues... but could've been cleaned more often. ~Service & Amenities: All uniformly-dressed flight attendants were adequate and spoke perfect English. None of the seats had video monitors for movie/show watching, music listening, and games playing. The seats themselves were roomy enough. No blankets, headphones, or pillows were provided. Because of the morning flight time, the attendants often came around which was fine in this case. There were no carry-on baggage fees. PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): I was traveling through and had no need to park. However, the airport offered onsite parking structures with rates that varied from $7.00 to a range of $50.00-$70.00/daily maximum. Because this was located within Terminal 6 of departing flights, you had to already be an outgoing or incoming passenger to even get here, so parking would be a moot point. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Located deep into Terminal 6 (specifically near Gates 65-69) filled with a ton of gates, plenty of reasonably-priced eateries and duty-free shops, and many monitors as you passed them along the way. There were sufficient places to sit in the terminal with plenty of natural and electric lighting. Once on the airplane, it seemed like any other, so nothing really needed to be said or seen here, but I wished I recalled the type of plane since I was nerdy like that! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=3Vk-ZbxwU3c9JLvSvUj_BQ&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. I liked to be unencumbered and unfettered, so the least amount of clothing, especially while I traveled through an airport, the better! OVERALL My roundtrip nonstop flight on Alaska Airlines out of LAX was fine and got me there and back safely which truthfully was all that mattered to me on any domestic flights. I wished there were seat video monitors that helped pass the time. In any case, I'd fly and recommend them again. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $368.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Yelp
I liked riding Alaska as I don't go on plane frequently, they had outlets for chargers on the plane ( big cable ) and they also had lots of movies to browse from. The service was really good I asked for extra snacks and she obliged, and the bathrooms were clean and the seats were too. The landing though it was so un smooth, it felt like I was in a bus crash again but worse, everyone one was yelling when we landed Because it really sucked, but we deported right on time.

Yelp
I took a flight to Cancun from los angeles and back with Alaska airlines. It was the first time flying with them and i had good experience. Everything was smooth the stuff was very friendly and available for any questions. I had better first class seats with other airlines but still it was fairly good. The airplane was new so it made the flight so much better. The food was not so good but what can you expect. I will fly with them again. Thank you

Yelp
Cheap WiFi price! Mainly the reason I'm giving 5 stars lol. But aside from that, the flight was reasonable price and was comfortable for economy seats.

Yelp
Flew out on Alaska Airlines the other day on a Skywest Embrarer 175 and it was a decent experience. Booked direct and managed to check-in online via the app. There was a last minute gate change which I caught before receiving both an e-mail and text message confirming the same. The Embrarer 175 was a 1.8 year old jet that was flown by a boomer with a Gen Z first officer. The first class seat was merely a wide leather seat. The seat cushion was starting to wear out and the over luggage compartment lockers were already chipped. Flight left the gate on time and the taxi at LAX was lengthy as usual. Due to the regional jet nature, safety video was done manually over the PA with a live demonstration. Cabin crew were extremely experienced. First class service consisted of a pre-departure beverage on top of the carton of water at my seat upon arrival. Once in the air, another beverage service along with a snack was offered before landing at SJC shortly thereafter. Wifi was available for a fee. Messaging was complimentary. Using the AlaskaAir app, I was able to track my flight's progress as well as catch up on the latest Alaska Airlines news. ;) We arrived at SJC on time and even got to use the jet bridge as a regional jet!

Yelp
This was my first family vacation flying with our 6-month-old baby, and unfortunately, Alaska Airlines made it a stressful and deeply disappointing experience from beginning to end. On our departure flight (2076 from LAX to Santa Rosa, July 16, 2025), we arrived 40 minutes before departure--later than planned due to traffic and the challenge of traveling with an infant. I politely asked Alaska employees for help checking in a bag, but no one offered assistance. One employee stood idle, watching but doing nothing. When I finally got someone's attention, I was told I missed the cutoff by 15 minutes. Instead of offering any empathy or accountability, she instantly denied my experience and dismissed me. I asked if I could check my bag at the gate and was told "you can try" with zero enthusiasm. Luckily, the gate staff accepted the bag--but even there, the energy was cold and resentful. Not a single "thank you" or kind word. On board, things got worse. The flight was delayed due to issues disconnecting from the bridge. During the delay, I asked flight attendant David if I could quickly use the restroom. His reaction was shocking--he snapped at me, raised his voice, flailed his arms, and basically barked, "UGH, go right ahead." It was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. The flight itself was dirty and understocked. No beverages except apple juice and water. Now, for the return: Flight 2077 (Santa Rosa to LAX on July 18) was cancelled without proper notice. I only found out when I arrived at the airport. No apology, no alternate flights offered--just a generic printout telling me to call for a refund. I was put on hold for 15+ minutes and had to buy new tickets last-minute with another airline to get home. That flight landed in Burbank, meaning I had to pay for an Uber home and another one to LAX to retrieve my car. In summary: * Staff across the board were rude, unhelpful, and seemed miserable. * No empathy for families or first-time travelers. * Poor communication and lack of basic hospitality. * Delays, cancellations, no refreshments, dirty cabins. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was so poor I felt compelled. Alaska Airlines showed me they are an unprofessional and customer-unfriendly airline. I'll be flying with literally anyone else from now on.

Yelp
Our flight from LAX to the Rogue Valley Airport was pleasant. It was a quick flight which made me happy. The flight attendants were nice. Going there our seats had extra room. The overhead compartments were very small so make sure that your carry on is small. Otherwise they will check it at the front of the plane before take off. A very smooth take off and landing both ways...Phew!!!! Not a lover of flying, but sometimes you just need to put on your "big girl" panties and fly the "Friendly Skies!" Hee Hee *Wifi was only free for text messaging on this flight. They charged $8 for the flight. *Complimentary drinks & pretzels were served

Ms. Sovereign R.

Yelp
Reasonable last minute flights, clean , and passengers are not as rude as Spirit. I hope they continue with their great service.

Yelp
Alaska is a joke. We had a direct flight scheduled from LAX to Boise to attend our daughter's senior night college volleyball game. Less than two hours before the flight as we were about to enter TSA, the flight was cancelled. I googled the reason and 17 hours prior they reported IT issues. They had plenty of time to notify everyone of the issues and possible delays or cancellations, but failed to do so. The agent tried to rebook a flight so we wouldn't miss the game but could only find one that arrived after the game. They offered to put us up in a hotel while we waited. We waited for the shuttle for 30 minutes. They sent us to the Aloft hotel and we were told we couldn't check in until 4 PM. Why would you send us to a hotel where we couldn't get a room for 5 hours? What a joke! I have been booking most of my flights through them but I will reconsider now.

Yelp
Today was my first time flying with Alaska Airlines and honestly it was a great experience. We boarded very quickly, our flight attendants Eli and Michelle were the epitome of pleasant, the pilot got us to our destination early. No complaints whatsoever, great job everyone thank you!

Yelp
Left my iPad on the plane 10 minutes later it was already missing and disconnected to where I couldn't find it on the Find My app. They basically just told me to go screw myself and gave me a flyer to call the phone number to call. Literally 10 minutes later.

Yelp
Was at American Airlines lounge at terminal 5 and saw 2 pretty Alaska planes this morning at 7 am . Good .

Yelp
They made us remove our sweaters which doesn't make any sense I mean I understand that you can put stuff in the pockets but it doesn't make sense and they make you take out your technology from your bags which doesn't make any sense either. The service was horrible! The people working there were so rude to me and my family. This airline was honestly awful and me and family were basically wasting our time here.

Yelp
Home For The Holidays: I flew home via Alaska Air to be home with family for Thanksgiving! I had booked a premium seat; I was able to board the plane early. As I boarded my early morning flight, I exchanged friendly greetings to the smiling faces at the entrance. Carry-On Politely: The nice gentleman I was sitting near, 2 rows behind first-class, secured my carry-on inside of an overhead bin, which I was grateful for. The flight attendants were incredibly nice, as they served refreshments. Apple juice was not available, but I enjoyed cranberry juice instead. Sky High: The flight was smooth, as I sat in my cozy window seat & enjoyed the view, as well as read a book. Near the end of the flight, we hit a bit of turbulence for about 15 minutes or so. However, the pilot's soothing voice was easily comforting & he handled the plane like a boss and all was well. (My flight back home was also a wonderful experience!) Home Sweet Home: We landed smoothly and safely. As a warm welcome, Seattle greeted me with pouring rain! At last, I was home sweet home again. Thank you Alaska Airlines for flying me home to enjoy time with family for Thanksgiving! Happy Holidays!

Yelp
Was not happy that I was charged for luggage even though I showed them my Alaska Airlines Credit Card. Someone needs to be reprimanded for that. Everything else went smooth. Flight Time was not bad.

Yelp
I never flew on Alaska and had No complaints, it was easy fast and smooth. The food was awesome!! Better than United!!!!

Yelp
Another terrible Airline, they would not let us check in 24 hours before, and seats were not assigned until we were at the Gate. They wanted $75 per seat for the most basic economy seat and I am certain they overbooked. How these airlines can bang the customers without impunity is because of the monopoly they run. $395 Million in annual profits, while customers have to be crammed into their shitty airplanes that smell like sewage. Ultimately it's our government that we need to hold accountable because with a stroke of a pen they can put a stop to these airlines' greed. But when the politicians are legally allowed to get bribes through lobbyist for these mega corporations to keep ripping off the public, these airlines like Alaska will keep banging us.

Yelp
Had to take an unexpected trip up to Portland for the day. I usually start my flight searches with American but they didn't have any flights from LAX to Portland that could get me up in the morning, give me several hours on the ground, and get me home the same day. So I tried Alaska. They had an early flight that got me up there before 9am and had another that left around 5pm. Perfect. It's been a few years since I'd been on an Alaska flight. I was pleasantly surprised. The condition of the airplanes was similar to American. Both airlines are trying hard to extend the life of existing planes. It was clean but was definitely showing its age (like a panel from the seat in front of us fell off during the flight. We gave it to the flight attendant who looked a bit embarrassed). I have status on AA but none on Alaska. The great news is that they recognize your AA status on their flights and it resulted in my getting upgraded to first class both ways. I was impressed with the food and beverage service in their first class and would definitely fly them again if their schedules are better. In addition, since you can select an approved airline partner for mileage credit when you are booking the ticket, I was able to get both base miles, bonus miles and million mile mileage credits for my flights. Very nice. Their terminal at LAX is currently undergoing construction (November 2023) so I expect the choices to improve greatly in 2024. I wouldn't hesitate to book them again if the flight schedule is better, or frankly, even the same as American. I hope your experience is the same or better than mine and...enjoy!!!

Steven H.

Yelp
broken off my luggage- making it impossible to tow behind me. After filing a claim with them, Alaska said the damage was "caused by the ordinary handling of checked baggage." Alaska's ordinary handling means breaking your stuff so you can't use it??? Got it. Zero ownership. Zero customer service. #dontflyalaska

Yelp
My favorite airline! Of all the airlines we've traveled with, American, Delta, Spirit... Alaska is the best! The crew is always so friendly. The seats are comfy and legroom is better than the others. We always upgrade our seats for a small fee, to premium (just behind first class). But even row 18 when returning from Cabo, was only a few rows behind premium. There's always plenty of carry on room in the above compartments. Unlike the other airlines every time we board with the later groups we'd have to check our bags because they'd run out of room. I'm really not a fan of flying but Alaska is my preference.

Yelp
Well deserving of a 5 OVERALL if only for the way they treated my Pops. For the record, Pops has been diagnosed with Alzheimers Dementia. With that said, family members decided to take one last hurrah kinda trip because as we all know, this disease is progressive and his has (and still is) progressing really fast. I'm not gonna go into too much detail. Let's just say Pops was a complete handful before, during and even after a 2.5 hour flight. All of the flight attendants were beyond patient and understanding - not one peep or look of complaint came off them. They even checked on him (as well as my party) periodically during the flight just to make sure we were all comfortable and doing okay. Check in process was easy, same as claiming our bags when we got to our destination. There was absolutely zero snags with our overall experience with them. I will admit, I am a SW traveller, but after this run, they come a very VERY (might even be extremely) close second. Thank you, Alaska Airlines crew. You truly helped get this trip off to a wonderful start!

Yelp
I have been a loyal Alaska Airlines customer going back 30 years. Overall, I have been very happy with my experiences with your airline. That is until recently. I just tried to book a flight for the end of next month. The route was Burbank California to Seattle Washington. I of course looked to upgrade, in fact I would often pick flights where upgrading to first class was an option. I found that it was cheaper to just purchase a first-class ticket as opposed to purchasing an upgrade faire and using one of my upgrades. The main reason to support one airline or hotel chain is to build status and then enjoy the perks such as upgrades. I just found this no longer applies to Alaska. This is not the first time I have experienced this but thought it was just a fluke when it happened in the past. Will be interesting to see if I hear back from the airline.

Yelp
My flight from LAX to Cancun was satisfactory and went off without a hitch, overall comfortable with smooth sailing. It was my return flight from Cancun to LAX (Flight 1446) that is the issue. Respectfully, Alaska Airlines would be best served by investing additional customer service training for their flight attendants. I am sympathetic to the many situations that transpired over the years regarding irate and belligerent passengers. I understand many flight attendants may be on edge. However, the general public can opt to fly with any airline and it's important for ALL to value respect and ensure individuals are treated with kindness. I, for one, fly around 4 times a year and have never been privy to a hostile flight experience. This is why I was surprised at how abrasive and rude one particular flight attendant, Franchesa, behaved. I had a carry-on bag and was required to check it at the gate. At the end of the flight I spoke to flight attendant Edy about this. Well Franchesa (who I was NOT speaking with) immediately interjected and said "well maybe you should not book a price saver flight so you can get on the aircraft sooner!" I could NOT believe this was her response. Earlier in the flight I overheard her speaking with the passengers behind me and again she was impolite, overall Franchesa was beyond discourteous. For the record, I had a travel agency plan my trip and had little to no say in which airline we flew with. I was excited to fly with Alaska as it is known to be a reputable airline. What a disappointment! This attendant made it abundantly clear she had little regard for her passengers.

Yelp
Missed my check in :( but thank you to Ivy for assisting me in this confusing journey. LA traffic was not accounted for when we started to depart from our house here in Southern California. An accident happened in which we had 30 minutes left but check in is AT LEAST 40-45 mins prior to the departure time! Thank you again Ivy for being so sweet and helpful through this whole process. Definitely one of the best experiences out of a bad situations at the airport because of you, ivy!

Yelp
We decided to fly with Alaska when visiting Hawaii. The flight there was amazing. Great customer service, great drink and snack selection. We upgraded our seats for extra leg space. WiFi and entertainment are outstanding. We will definitely be booking our next flight with Alaska.

Yelp
We had the best experience with Alaska airlines than we have had in years with any airline. Fluid lines, helpful and very friendly staff. It was the easiest check in and process. Same response on the flight back from Costa Rica.

Yelp
Why do you offer a phone number if you don't intend on answering it???????? I have been on "hold" with elevator music for over an hour. No person, not automated machine has answered the line. I'm STILL IN HOLD WHILE WRITING THIS REVIEW. Does anyone care at all???

Yelp
I have traveled all over the world and this is the first time I have ever heard of an airline charging a Premium Economy passenger on an international flight to check one bag. Last time I will ever fly with Alaska.

Yelp
Our first time flying Alaska and it would be my last if I can help it! We flew Alaska not by choice, but because our flight booked on Icelandair from LAX had connecting flight operated by Alaska. Everything you read about Alaska that are negative will likely happen. If I need to rant on any kind of companies or service, this would probably be it. Though I understand that each experience is unique and not everything is negative about the company but, our experience is another one added to the majority of the % of dis-satisfied customers. Our flight from LAX to SEA was delayed by over an hour, which caused us to miss our second flight at SEA to KEF (Iceland). If anyone ever booked international and it had a domestic connecting flight, you know how much headache that could cause! It was our first time with domestic connecting for an international so we really learned our lesson. Once we missed the flight, there was no info given before de-boarding as to how to get help with connecting flights. We even asked the flight attendants while inflight if they could help us (at least there were 6 of us who had connecting) by announcing when we land to let those with connecting flight to go out first. they said they will try but they never did! and once we landed and everyone go all crazy to de board, what could you do? Then, once outside, nobody was at the gate to help us like they said. Long story short, Icelandair and Alaska are both ONE World alliance but they seemed to share nothing! Not in system or communication. Both of these airlines made us go back and forth opposite ends of SEATAC because they each said the other would be able to take care of the issue. We were very frustrating! Flying has became a nightmare unless you gorges out thousands of $$ to get first class but even then, you're still at the mercy of misinformation between airlines! The Alaska Help center at SEATAC has TONS of employees and none of them seemed eager or attentive to help any passengers with missed flights. Our rep was chatting with another colleague while helping us, and we told her we were on time sensitive because she needed to book us on the next flight before that flight got full. Really stressful and none of the employees seemed to care enough to really took care of issues, and they are the HELP center! Overall, I don't want to write a novel about the bad experience and service with Alaska. On board, they are not that bad. but other than that, I would really pick any other options before consider them again! One last thing, while waiting for our over 1 hour delayed at LAX Terminal 6, I checked with the attendance at the gate twice about our chance of missing the connecting flight and she kept telling me don't worry you definitely going to make that connecting flight to Iceland. Well, she was either incompetent or practically lied to my face to avoid the obligation to help me. Second last thing, while we de-boarding on flight going back to LAX, middle of de-boarding the plane practically shut down. NO power. we all had to use phones as flashlights to find luggage and to get out of the airplanes. Nobody seemed to care to flash light to any of the passengers. there were still half of us on the plane!

Yelp
They need to train there frontline agents better Very rude, very unprofessional, no customer service what so ever. Definitely out of my traveling choice moving forward. Every airline has planes and routes, But how's got the passengers service.

Yelp
I've flown on this airline many times before but I'm so done with it. They now tell you to check in for your flight on your phone but it literally doesn't work. On my flight back from LA they changed my seat even though I *paid extra* to be able to pick my seat because I need to be near the bathroom. And it was for no reason because the row that I would have been in was completely empty??? Couldn't use the overhead bin above my own seat because the flight attendants took it. Also charges customers for *one* checked bag. Should be free.

Yelp
I definitely prefer flying Alaska Airlines over the other airlines. Flight attendants are friendly and the equipment is relatively new. They have a good selection of beverages and, if you upgrade to premium class, you get more legroom and free alcoholic beverages. The airfare is also reasonable. Alaska will be my go-to airline for my travel needs.

Yelp
Liars and frauds/cancelled my whole booking with another airline/because they pretended that there was weather conditions/however all other airlines flew out at the same airport/i had to cancel important meetings, my hotel/my VRBO because of these sluts. they then changed it to operational/who is running this operation, obviously complete dimwits and losers that are not very good at lying. Yelp
I was in business class, and the flight attendant told me to walk to the back of the plane for another drink. It was an hour and a half into the flight, and they told me to get up if I wanted another drink. Why fly Alaska if that's their job? if you're sitting in business class.??????

Yelp
Alaska Airlines provided us with a great flying experience. We booked coach for three for a trip to Cancun, Mexico. I downloaded the appt which made everything easier. Check in was quick, I paid for our luggage ahead of time, staff were friendly and overall we were comfortable in our assigned seats. I am 6'6" and I was pretty comfortable for flying coach on a five hour flight. Just don't forget your neck pillow.

Yelp
Terrible service, I wanted to adjust my departure time from early morning to the evening, of the same day, they said no. It was the 27th through the 29th of October from Oxnard to Las Vegas round trip. They did not offer a refund. They put the price from $88 to $402. No care for customers.
