The 15 Best Vegan Restaurants in Tokyo, Japan | Eater

"Housed on a side street 10 minutes from Nakameguro Station, Alaska Zwei isn’t nearly as chilly as its name implies. The cozy, shabby-chic atmosphere complements a small menu of well-executed dishes. The brown rice plate is the go-to, with an ever-changing rotation of mains (usually a veggie karaage or cutlet) surrounded by colorful side dishes and a warming bowl of soup. Inspired by the diversity of vegan choices she saw while working in Europe, proprietor Saiko Ohsara sought to bring that same variety to Tokyo. Given that Ohsara also runs two branches of vegan bakery Universal Bakes in the trendy Shimokitazawa area, the breads and desserts are highlights at Alaska Zwei, as are the hot drinks, like a recent mint hot chocolate or gingery chai laced with amazake (sake lees), making it a good stop for an afternoon snack." - Chiara Terzuolo

Google
No wonder why this place has a HIGH rating because the food speaks for itself. Their soft serve was amazing and the berry sauce 10x the flavor profile. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Adorable vegan cafe with really good coffee. We had the soup breakfast set and it was awesome to be able to have some vegan bread, as most bread in Japan has dairy in it. The staff were so friendly and we’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu.

Unfortunately didn't get lunch which seems to be the highlight; only ordered the "sweets set" which consisted of a muffin and tea. the muffin was quite dry and seemed like it'd been leftover from the day before and the rooibos tea tasted like medicine.

It's a very OK restaurant. The handwritten menu is kind of hard to read if you're not comfortable with Japanese script, but there's pictures on the board outside. If you're in the neighborhood and need to eat, and you're vegan, this place will do. But I would not come here for the flavors alone, if you know what I mean. That being said, I would absolutely come again, if I was in Nakameguro.

What a wonderful surprise! If you’re looking for a change from the standard Japanese fare, which is of course SO delicious, then look no further than Alaska Zwei. The food, the service, and the vibe are five stars. For vegans and non vegans alike, this place is well worth hitting up. ❤️🤍

A nice vibe and atmosphere in this vegan place. As you might expect from a vegan restaurant in Tokyo, prices are quite high and portions are pretty small. But the food is good and it’s a nice option for a lighter lunch. You can choose from a menu of 4 plates - rice based, curry based, salad based and soup based. We tried the curry and rice and both were good - nice to taste some saffron and cardamom in Tokyo, so if you like these you’ll enjoy. The place also has a nice selection of home made bread and pastries so probably great for a coffee break. Better to reserve In advance since this is a popular place - we reserved on the same day and there was only one time slot open.

Cannot possibly recommend highly enough. Atmosphere, food, and service all perfect. I had the brown rice set that came with miso soup, super flavorful and yummy soy meat, fresh salad, etc. Don’t forget dessert - I had the muffin with whipped cream and it was sooo good. I was just there at lunch time and I already want to go back and try everything else. This place will change your life!

Very quiet and kind staff. Good location. Serving size was smaller than I expected for the price. Coffee was watery. We could not finish it.

Yelp
Alaska provides excellent vegan fare, with friendly staff and a nice a location. My friends and I walked here from the Shibuya area, about a 20 min walk (and not exactly on a main drag for most of it, but don't get discouraged if you do the same!) As you get close, you'll start seeing some signs of life on the street again, with Alaska tucked away right behind a more main strip. When we got there on a Sunday night, there was a decent amount of room and we were sat right away. The server explained our options really thoroughly, which include a few different sets (brown rice, bread, and one other I can't remember), which include soups and varying options depending on what you choose. There were also plenty of a la carte items that could be ordered. I ended up choosing the brown rice set, which came with the rice (obviously), traditional salad, more of a small seaweed salad, and a soy meat karage dish. One of my friends also got this, and we were both really impressed by the flavors and quality in general. As a group, we also shared sweet potato fries (with a maple sauce--these went very fast), and the other two in our party got more bowl style dishes that they also raved about. On our way out, I grabbed a berry muffin that was really excellent--fresh and light. The total for our meal was surprisingly reasonable, so would very much recommend as a great inexpensive vegan spot. Also, note too that it was open until 9pm on a Sunday, which was not the case for many of the vegan places we were exploring (a lot of which closed at 7pm or 8pm).
