Beloved Rambler Bartender Grady Lambert Has Died | Eater Portland

"He was a frequent visitor to the nearby cafe Albina Press while walking up and down Mississippi Avenue, remembered as a familiar face in the neighborhood." - Janey Wong

Albina Press Owner Kevin Fuller, Longtime Portland Coffee Maven, Has Died | Eater Portland

"Opened in North Portland in 2004 during the rise of the third-wave coffee movement, Albina Press became a neighborhood standby with a limited digital presence and a reputation for responsible sourcing and meticulous barista work; it developed national buzz—from New York Times name-drops to coffee competition medals—expanded to locations in Vancouver and Hawthorne, and operated under Kevin Fuller for 16 years, during which several prominent Oregon baristas (including Billy Wilson and Matt Higgins) worked there. Colleagues and former employees credit Fuller’s uncompromising vision for quality—Matt Higgins called it “the best coffee shop in Portland during the third wave” and said Fuller insisted that nothing short of excellence would come across the bar—and remember him as a private but devoted mentor who took pride in seeing staff go on to open and succeed in their own ventures." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Such a cute coffee shop. Coffee is great and they have amazing selection of pastries. I also love all the different spaces to sit down and enjoy your coffee or to sit down and study. Feels really roomy and cozy and a lot of cool things to look at. Like art and coffee cups for sale. This is my new study and coffee spot from now on. Baristas are so friendly and welcoming.

Molly R.

Google
We out here, tasty lattes adjacent to local framed art, sweet and savory food options, friendly staff.

Maren S.

Google
Such incredible coffee options and delicious baked goods In a comfortable and charming neighborhood snuggle space. This continues to remain one of the better coffee shops in Portland. They have outdoor seating here for people who just wanna catch up with good friends and be outside. They also have wonderful spots and to relax and connect.

Angelyka C.

Google
It's a good local café with a nice selection of both savory and sweet pastries, as well as great quality coffee. I appreciate how early it is open though it can get slow during earlier hours at times if due to lack of morning staff but it's understandable. I like the comfortable and sleek atmosphere of the interior and it's a cozy place to hang out.

Salui A.

Google
delicious coffee and bagels. excellent atmosphere to take out your laptop and work. I love that they share the talent of local artists on their walls. The staff is always very kind and friendly.

Google
Lots of space, good coffee, good service! Good place to work on your laptop. I wish their pastries etc were better, but this place still shines as one of my favorite coffee shops.

Stephen P.

Google
Great neighborhood cafe right at the end of the Hawthorne Strip. It feels out of the way while still being easy to reach. Their bakery goods rotate. No gluten free options.

James A.

Google
Great space, superb coffee, excellent prices. I feel naked without a laptop poaching a 2-top.

Yelp
Maaaaaaybe my new favorite coffee shop! I had been to their other location but for some sad reason never made it here. Located on Hawthorne just past the curve at 50th, they've got plenty of free street parking in the nearby blocks. They don't have much external signage but they do have a lot of outdoor streetside seating, so it makes you wonder what everyone else knows. Inside, they've got Coava coffee, efficient staff, and an old-school cafe vibe. With multiple couches (one of my main criteria for a coffee shop) and free wifi, this is a place to work, meet people, and slow down. Great long hours - they're open 6am-6pm.

Yelp
A part of the third wave coffee movement (#1), this second location of Albina Press made big headlines back in the day for being the next step in coffee pioneer Kevin Fuller's (#2) vision for making coffee more than just a drink. The intentions were genuine and things have progressed in a way where Albina Press is one of the most recognized coffee brands in the city. It's not too dissimilar from its OG sister location in North Portland (#3), where they still brew high quality caffeinated drinks with the vibes of a homey communal space with chairs, couches, and individual tables for a proper coffee date, WFH worthy WiFi, and plenty of anti-war propaganda in the self-serve water area in the back. The latte art was on point, the cold brew was most definitely strong, cafe au lait was milky and foamy in the best way, and the americano drinks were fabulous. While their hours (#4) aren't particularly suited for after-work hours, they do an excellent job of keeping their space clean and the vibes low key throughout the morning and afternoon. Prices are good for Portland standards. Most drinks are $5 and under, even for the largest sizes. The limited but high quality pastry selection is also appreciated. The service was good overall, just be certain with the order and don't be afraid to ask for recommendations. Lines can happen, albeit rarely, and I would encourage most folks to drink the coffee on the spot. The space is part of the experience (be weary of the restrooms tho), so enjoy the low key ambiance with a drinkable jumpstart to the day. Maximize the time by starting early and be aware that street parking is the only way. __________ (#1) If you understand this, then you're either a serious coffee enthusiast or a massive food nerd. Ironically, I'm neither. (#2) R.I.P. (#3) https://www.yelp.com/biz/albina-press-portland (#4) They close at 6pm daily.

Yelp
BEASTED! I am on the hunt for the perfect Portland coffee shop and have yet to find it, however albina was pretty good! My go to drink recently has been a london fog and I was very pleased with my order today. The oat milk was steamed well and the tea was loose leaf which is always my preferred way. There was plenty of seating indoors and out and a complimentary water station as well. No extra charge for alternative milk too! Everything was good, just missing that wow factor for me I guess.
google avatar

Yelp
Good natural lighting, very productive atmosphere, not overly loud. The service was very quick, I got my cafe au lait in probably 30 seconds flat. The outdoor seating would be super nice on a sunny day. I also ordered a Marionberry scone, which didn't have as much actual fruit as I would've liked. There was a little clump of berries on one side, but the rest was rather plain. My only real negative was that the bathroom was a little gross and there was quite a bit of profane graffiti everywhere.

Yelp
I'd once been driving from Tacoma to Astoria and somewhere along Portland felt the need for an espresso. So I got off I5 and ended up at Albina Press. I had only a dim recollection all these years and finally had the chance to return on a recent trip to Portland. It's still the sweet down to earth neighborhood spot with excellent coffee and friendly service. But what I did not expect was one of the best iced lattes I've ever had -- which I actually ordered for my boyfriend. Pistachio Lemon sounded weird to me but was nutty, mellow, and refreshing. Wow so good. Also, there are picnic tables in the backyard which is a perfect spot to sit in the shade and enjoy your drinks on a summer day.

Iz Y.

Yelp
Albina press has a good vibe to it, with outdoor seating and indoor seating with comfy sofas to sip your coffee or tea on and outings with your friends. I got the honey latte and they served it quick and fast, as well as hot and beautiful with some signature latte art. The price for the coffee is standard and their syrups are seasonal. Receiving my coffee, it was the perfect sweetness! However, I wouldn't say the same for the chai latte my friend got. Besides the coffee, the service was good and the atmosphere was vibrant on a nice and sunny day. I would recommend this cafe if you are in the area if the others do not work out. :)
google avatar

Arnab K.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. The place was open a bit late relatively speaking which was good. They had decaf options too if someone needs to try that. The coffee was smooth and smelled really nice. I would say it's a must try place.
google avatar

Andrea J.

Yelp
Albina Press serves up strong coffee with chill vibes--perfect spot to sip, study, or just unwind.

Yelp
Niche spot located in the Albina District and I had almost forgotten about this place. I only been here once since I've moved back to Oregon about four years ago... So it was a nice memory shock. The service here is great and the coffee and baked goods they have are equally delicious. It's a great spot to come in relax and cozy up in autumn and just read the newspaper or get some work done or read a good book. Nice little area to explore around there as well
google avatar

Maghesree C.

Yelp
Really liked their coffee and the eclectic vibe. I tried their cappuccino. Will definitely go back for the coffee.

Yelp
my partner and i live on the west side of the metro area, so we decided to spend a weekend on the east side of portland to explore it more in depth than we've been able to. i was so pleased to find an Albina Press right across the street from our guest house. i'd been wanting to try Albina Press for some time. even though they were busy, the barista was kind and cheerful, took time to answer my questions, and was patient while i decided how to order my coffee. i enjoyed a perfectly made cafe au lait, flavored with raw sugar and all spice. i also appreciated how cute and cozy the space is, with a variety of different types of seating available for people to hang out. shout out to the reviewer who identified this business as being anti-genocide with their 1-star review, as that detail made me even more enthusiastic to support this business.

Robert S.

Yelp
This my favorite coffee shop in the world. I'm from the SF area so I know coffee. Just got back from all over Europe.
google avatar

Kyle E.

Yelp
Cozy ambiance, lots of offerings, and kind service - this coffee shop is great. I'm not sure about the outlet offerings because I was getting coffee with a friend to chat, but that is something I'd look for in the future.
google avatar

Kymil P.

Yelp
Yummy treats, the teas are magnificent and aromatic. I forget which tea late I got both tried all pastries and teas at out table. Sweetest service with stellar recommendations. And cozy ambiance. I love the couches. Great place to chill and have a quiet private talk or to study.
google avatar

Jesse C.

Yelp
Great little hidden coffee spot! It is hard to spot when driving by, and a lot bigger inside that I expected. There are plenty of tables in the back for those that need a good place to study. The baristas are friendly. And the drinks are delicious!
google avatar

Jacob B.

Yelp
Feels like a shadow of its former self. Sigh. Progress ? Guess it's just a sign of Portland in the 20s
google avatar

Melannie S.

Yelp
I hadn't been to Albina Press in a long time, but it was as great as I remembered it! There wasn't any mention of wearing masks, just a few signs and staff is wearing masks. I saw a review from about 6 months ago that said it was strongly recommended, so that must have eased up. The coffee was exactly what you would expect, amazing. My friend had a scone and I had a rice crispy treat, both were delicious. I really liked that they had some different but not odd coffee syrups to try, I had allspice, which was really good and not too overpowering or sweet. It paired well with the coffee. We sat at a table in the back, it's a good amount of seating, not too crowded but not spread out. Overall it was a nice experience. Would be a good place to work, study, read, or meet a friend.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
Oooh actually good coffee! So good! Both the cold brew and the latte were absolutely lovely. And you know - I'm really happy they are working so hard to keep their employees and customers safe. Sure, it's cold outside, but it really ISN'T safe to be de-masking indoors. So kudos. It's gonna bring me back more often. The barista was so nice and friendly. Not expected, but a bonus when it happens! Would love some sippy tops instead of straws, but hey, you can't have everything.
google avatar

Toni A.

Yelp
On a cold rainy afternoon we stopped and I had a wonderfu chai latte. We sat outside in the covered seating area. Loved this spot on our whirlwind tour of Portland.

Yelp
Please consider the antisemitism you are promoting with a display of "from the river to the sea." I've been a customer for many years but I don't feel safe entering your doors now.

Christina G.

Yelp
I have had some nice visits to this place but this last one was miserable. The coffee is fine, the space is cozy, the location is convenient and they have the basic pastry type snacks. The service was pretty neutral until this last visit, when I actually needed a little extra help. The two folks working behind the bar were really rude and unkind. I know service work is exhausting, and I try to have empathy for all workers but when someone gets angry at me for showing disappointment and confusion on my face, that's just not cool.
google avatar

Sybonei G.

Yelp
Walked here on one of my work breaks after a friend had mentioned it's one of their favorite shops in the area. They've got covered seating in front as well as seats inside the shop. I was in the mood for a treat so I ordered an almond milk latte and thought it was quite good. I've had a few disappointing ones from other shops but this one was yum! Always glad to find a new coffee with good stuff :)

Benjamin S.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop ever! I cannot find another spot that has as tasty coffee as Albina Press!
google avatar

Mandy N.

Yelp
4 stars because of indoor seating not being available during COVID, and it was pretty cold sitting outside. Wins for this coffee shop: They have oatmilk, pastries, and Baristas who know how to make legit espresso drinks. Also, a huge plus that they are open early... most other coffee shops don't open until 7:30 or 8am.
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to come and enjoy an iced tea while catching up on homework (in the good old days) and work (the grown up days). The place is spacious with tables and couches all around. The service is friendly and always quick. I have always had a pleasant time here. PS. Ham & cheese crossiant is a perfect snack if you need a little substance in your body while cranking out your work.
google avatar

Yelp
Most delicious cappuccinos!! Love this place! And the coffee is strong. Staff have always been friendly and accommodating

Dani B.

Yelp
Excellent business with excellent values and inclusiveness. From the river to the sea Palestine will be free.

Yelp
I loved that this place re-opened back up! Tasty beverages and fun conversation. Thank you!
google avatar

Crystal T.

Yelp
Excellent customer service! Super friendly and welcoming. Great vegan pastries. I also very much appreciate them operating cautiously during COVID.

Yelp
This place is alright, but leaves a few things to be desired. The coffee was decent, the baristas were totally nice, and it had a cute atmosphere. I had a biscuit, but they apparently have no way to heat them up or toast them, after they've been sitting in the display window. So it was hard. I'm rather turned off by locations that don't offer WiFi in an effort to shorten the time people stay there, because that literally never works. People will continue to camp out, which is kind of why people even go to coffee shops, and they'll usually just bring work that doesn't require the internet or a computer, or just use their computers sans internet. I get the intention, but it simply does not work in any large-scale fashion, and is just one less service that lessens the experience. That being said, it is a cute place to go and chat with friends, read a book, or type up a paper if you don't mind the ambient noise, which is very minimal.

Adam B.

Yelp
No restroom. Basic human needs. Coffee makes you go. I'll make coffee at home, after all it's super easy.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
This place screams "Portland" and "hip"! My hot chocolate was so pretty and delicious!! Perfect size, and amount of sweetness. Enjoyed the outdoor seating on a beautiful summer day in July.

Blake S.

Yelp
Well made Coava coffee in a cool space. Staff was super friendly. They are open nice and early.
google avatar

Ada Y.

Yelp
Good chai, my favorite place to work and study. There are different types of seating; counter top, couches, small tables. I just wish they have a small oven/ microwave to heat up the croissant:)
google avatar

Brad P.

Yelp
My neighborhood coffee shop, and it's a good one. They serve Coava beans and do a superb job with espresso drinks of all sorts. The atmosphere is light and open, and most people have their noses in their own business, whatever that is. There are many small tables, some larger ones and a few couches, and so there's a spot for everyone and every little group. Albina Press is one of my favorite places to sit and get something done with a laptop. Wifi is speedy (around 60Mbps) and there are abundant outlets. As with any public Wifi, connect with a VPN and you're all set.
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
I've come here a few times to get some yummy coffee or hot chocolate and get some work done. Their hot chocolate is super cute as it has chocolatey designs on top and they've always got a foam art going on their coffees. I also ordered a London Fog that was amazing. There's pastries if you're also wanting to snack on something. There's free wifi and plenty of seating area and space to work/study. There's street and residential parking. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable about different coffees and teas. If it hasn't been evident in my review so far, this is a great place for studying/working.
google avatar

John E.

Yelp
I am not a coffee drinker which makes it interesting that I was in a coffee place, and even more intruiging is; why would I Yelp a coffee place not being a coffee person? Tea. Black tea. Black tea with sassafras root to be exact. Served as an iced tea by a friendly barista to top things off. It was like a perfectly refreshing root beer without the annoying sugary aftertaste and foam to deal with (sometimes foam is cool). Just my two cents.
google avatar

Lorri E.

Yelp
Mmm hmmm, they went and did it again. The *new* (sparkly) Albina Press kicks some major coffee booty in Portland, once again. A fine new Stumptown coffee-scented shop - the new one pays homage to the old one--with expansive white walls (functioning as art gallery, of course), old wood floors - and a TON more space. Oh, I love it. Really nice environment, next door to Sapphire. And it goes without saying that my special treat of a mocha was creamy, smooth, rich, and complex. A minor disclaimer in that I should mention a friend of mine happens to date one of the baristas there, but I would have loved it anyway even without that 6-degrees connection. Go in and have Matt or Billy brew you a cup that puts all other coffees to shame. Mmmm. Yummy. p.s. I know the Albina Press can be known for being a tad on the coffee shop snobbery side (ok, more than a tad) but I am willing to overlook any signs of pretension to savor that perfect cup. I saw no pretension, just a beautiful new coffee shop, on a great Portland Street, with people who love good coffee.
google avatar

Tom J.

Yelp
Just recently discovered this coffeehouse gem in my neighborhood. It's like trekking through the jungles of Coffee-rica, avoiding the dangerous species hipster-us importanus and stumbling into an oasis of relaxation. They brew Stumptown and they brew it right. The cup of it I had this past weekend was the best cup of coffee I've had in months, if not longer. Sometimes it's not quite that stellar, but always good. It's much better when they have the soymilk available. I love their muffins, they're not too sweet and I don't feel like I'm having a piece of cake. Albina will revitalize and fortify you for your next trek through the urban jungle. Watch out for the rare bearded violin busker!!
google avatar

Vanessa V.

Yelp
Cafe Lattes are what I like to order when I go to coffee houses, but I chose to try the mocha instead while at Albina. I ordered the 12oz which was $4.00 -- just a tad pricey, I think -- and I requested soy milk to be added. The mocha was delicious, and I really digged the foam. Service was friendly and they take some time prepping the drinks, but the wait is worth it. The shop in general is clean, but the couches my friend and I sat on had a plenty of crumbs; the coffee table was also crumby. There's a decent amount of seating spots at this shop, but they can fill up fast on a Sunday morning.
google avatar

Christopher P.

Yelp
Great coffee, friendly staff, and surprisingly reasonable prices but what I've never truly appreciated before is the ambiance. The walls are white & the place is sparsely decorated but they have a few love seats & I love a coffee shop with comfy furniture. I'm gonna be coming here a lot more often.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
This place is comically expensive- 3.50 for an espresso, 2.5 for an in house 12oz coffee with no refills allowed. Am I missing something? Why are these prices out of line with most other Portland coffee shops?
google avatar

Tanya M.

Yelp
Every time I come to Albina I am met with exceptional coffee and service. I always order a breve latte, and it is pure perfection each time. I love the atmosphere of the shop- it's relaxed and there is lots of natural lighting. Plus, I always find awesome new artists with the barista's awesome choice of music!
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
It's usually fairly mellow and quiet here, so I love coming here to get work done. They use coava coffee roasters, I always get a standard latte and love it. Would recommend this place, especially to study or work!
google avatar

Dana S.

Yelp
Really spacious cute coffee shop. Lots of seating indoors and outdoors :) Free wifi. Offers alternative milk options: almond or soy for additional $0.50. Proudly grinds stump town coffee.
google avatar

Humam T.

Yelp
I think most people would agree that this is a cool place, and everyone who works there is almost friendly... My latte was excellent even though they use Stump Town. The music they play is good too; however, they play it way way too loud even with ear plugs. They also play the same music over and over. I heard Purple Rain by Prince four times in less than an hour. Five stars are reserved for places that make you want to go back. This place does not.

Savannah C.

Yelp
Good coffee & the perfect outdoor seating. So many delicious bakery items to enjoy too.
google avatar

Diane C.

Yelp
Stopped for a nice soy chai. They serve Dragonfly here, which I like. It seems that adding soy to chai makes it difficult to make it the right shade of hot and this one was a little on the 'too cool' side. They have simple syrup, which is a must have for me to be totally satisfied. I like the atmosphere. It has odd art and a dead bat on the walls. I like the irony. The music is interesting. All ages are here. I like that as well.
google avatar

Wes N.

Yelp
A great coffee spot in Hawthorne. The space is clean and simple. They have a good selection of coffee and related beverages. Prices are reasonable. I also had a coffee cake which included espresso cream cheese, it was fantastic. Would definitely go back.
