Where to find the best Mexican restaurants on East Lake Street | Eater Twin Cities

"Not only does La Alborada grocery store offer a wide variety of grocery options including an impressive butcher, but it also has a sit-down restaurant and deli. At the restaurant, find Mexican classics like tacos, quesadillas, and a lot more. If pressed for time, stop by the deli and pick up tamales, baked goods, salsas, and juicy carnitas." - Adrian Diaz

Looking for authentic Mexican food and cultural products? There’s none other than La Alborada, nestled near the intersection of Cedar Ave and Lake Street - across from the historic Pioneers and Soldiers cemetery. La Alborada has revamped their menu offerings and grocery store experience. Come buy your marigolds for Días de los Muertos and stay for pan dulce or a tasty soup or tacos. They also offer the best tortillas in town - Tortilla Campesina, get yours before they sell out!

It’s a tiny market but clean and it has a restaurant at the front. The market is bigger with all the rooms and secret passages. It’s like you are lost in Mexico. They even have the wall of the people who they don’t serve for the most wanted FBI style. It’s interesting ;)

The best Uber Eats scroll choice ever! When my boyfriend and I can't decide what to order we just scroll kinda like we're spinning the wheel on The Price is Right.😄 The Tamales are awsome! They are also huge. We both loved the cactus salad. We will definitely be ordering from Alborada Market again. 😋 🙂

Tamales were terrible. Small and taste like nothing. Don’t come here.

Yelp
I stopped in this place to grab a bite. I wish I had time to look more and shop in the market. Everything looked so good and cool! They have lots of bakery treats, produce, meat, dairy items, candy, canned goods, and more things you can't find at a regular grocery store. The little cart outside was selling some type of fruit/drink that seemed popular. Most things here are in Spanish so I wasn't sure. I ate at the restaurant inside, where most people were getting meals to go from. I had the chicken tamal, pastor taco, and carne asada taco. My favorite was the carne taco. They give you two big bowls of salsa, but I only wanted a little.

Yelp
The tacos were ok, the dining area smelled like old meat and the women's restroom was really dirty :/ Only giving it a 2 because the young lady was kind.

The cakes here are yummy the sell tres leches cakes individuals and the birthday cake size the sell Flan in a cup or a big circle one which is the best. The also sell chips made in mexico taste different but in a good way brings you back to Mexico. The service is awesome and i believe if you spent $40 you get a free liter soda not sure if they still do that haven not spent that much since last year.

Yelp
I've had a great experience every time I've eaten here. Last weekend I had a rich and hearty bowl of menudo for an excellent price with flour tortillas and generous fixings (9 dollars, I think). The soup was packed with enough buche and tripe to keep me full until the next morning. Today we had great barbacoa de res tacos, a breakfast plate of huevos a la mexicana and a horchata. These were simple, but very inexpensive a good. Meat was tender, eggs were nicely cooked, beans and rice on the side were fresh and hearty. Two tacos and the breakfast plate were enough for a filling brunch for two people and I think the total came to about 15 dollars. This place reminds me of some of my favorite family-owned sit down mexican places in Los Angeles. You'll notice that the clientele is primarily local spanish-speaking folks, but the staff does speak English. A knowledge of more than the basics of Mexican food and little Spanish will help in the ordering process, though, as there really isn't a way to translate things like "Chilaquiles" into English- they have both the green and red and they are also very good. I think the people who've had bad experiences were expecting this to be a taquería, when in reality it's a bit more like a family diner - come ready to sit and talk for a little bit while you wait for them to prepare your food to order. Also, although the tacos are good maybe try something other than tacos (they have a pretty deep menu). I'll try to post a picture of the menu soon so folks can come prepared. Finally, I question the veracity of several of the bad reviews I am seeing for this place. The way the ordering works is that you come in and pay for your meal when you order it at the counter - I don't understand how people were " to get the check" or were "pressured to give them my cc" -- strange -- well I guess yelp is anonymous so people can write whatever they want and not be held accountable, in this case it's too bad that it is hurting what is obviously a family-owned business.

Yelp
I know I reviewed this place before, like back in June when I went there. Hmmm. Excellent Mole by the # in the deli area. We tend towards the jalapeno mole. Yeah, they have different kinds to choose from. Really this is a grocery store/market, and the mole is thick and dense and comes double wrapped in plastic bags. We just leave ours in the fridge until we need it, then mix it with water to loosen it up a bit. Lasts forever. Then we go to the small counter and sit in front of the plates of cut jalapeno and onion and the grill and order us some cheap ass tacos. The menu is on a dry erase board, and I don't know what half of it is (Spanish from High School is such a distant memory) Cabeza? Head. Pollo? Chicken. That's as far as I get. You can watch them pull the meat out of the simmering pot and chop it up in taco sized pieces on a round cutting board with a wicked butcher knife. I think they are like 1.25 per taco.

Yelp
Mexican supermarket, bakery and restaurant. We stopped by to check out the supermarket part but immediately decided to have lunch as well. The restaurant area is small but really nice and quiet with the traditional stone counter and the open kitchen. We tried different tacos and they were all tasty and cheap. It is a great place to stop by for lunch or a quick snack. After lunch we moved to the supermarket which has a really nice meat counter as well as some great fresh products. We ended up buying a bit of meat, mole poblano, queso fresco, guacamole and tortillas. The guacamole we brought to a party. We got to the party a bit early to help out the hosts.... well by the time the other guests arrived, the guacamole was basically gone. Shameful I know, but it was just that good! I think we will go back for more.

Yelp
This is a great market, I always love places where you can get baked goods or shop around while waiting for your food. It's a great market and I highly recommend.

Yelp
Great hispanic market. It has everything you would expect: speciality produce, meat, deli and bakery. Everything I have had there is great. The only thing i would mention is the cashier system there is a train wreck: it seems the girl working there has to enter most things manually into the point of sale equipment so check out takes awhile.

Yelp
Well let me start by saying that I write this with a very heavy heart :( this was Strongly recommended to me by a close friend for the tacos. Let me start by saying that I LOVE Mexican food and I am very familiar with what is good. And baby this ain't it. At first entrance to this location you will notice the extremely dirty or filthy tables, floors and menus. Then you might notice that the service is terrible. And I mean terrible. I waited for over 15 mins with no one ahead of me to place my order then I was pressured to give them my cc with no formal bill. When I received my cc receipt I noticed I was grossly over charged to the tune of 20+ dollars more than what I owed. I proceeded to tell the cashier and manager and was slyly told "sorry no speak English". Now this might work on someone else however I speak Spanish and have lived in mexico. So this was crap. I called their bluff and told them in Spanish to which they said that the computer cannot fix the overage and I needed to take it up with my bank. This has been the WORST place I have ever been to and I can only tell you save yourself the time and frustration and do not go to la alborada market in Minneapolis !!!!!'n

Yelp
This place offers mediocre food, it's a shame that people don't know what good food is and rate this place highly. I ordered a burrito al pastor which is marinated pork. They gave me carnitas with fried marinated chicken too hide the carnitas and maybe thought I would be stupid enough to not notice. I wasn't given any heads up of them not having al pastor anymore. I frankly wouldn't be surprise if they use that everyday. My mom also ordered a taco al pastor and had the same issue and it was cold too. Wouldn't even eat it if it was free.

Yelp
Food was great. Market was interesting and fun. Not super welcoming, but had a festive, well-lit corner to eat and chat.

Yelp
Love their food but their service is unacceptable. We were the only ones in the restaurant AND go get the lady to take our order. Took forever to get our food. She brought one set of utensils for 3 of us and never came back with more. The waitress never came back to our table after she dropped off our food. Had to go get her and ask for our check and this whole time the owner was sitting there also. They were all much more busier watching the soap operas on tv. Not sure I will ever go back even though I love their tamales.

Yelp
This market had everything I was looking for; a horchata mix, pan dulces of every flavor, and chorizo. While I love Mercado Central, this place was especially convenient because of their parking lot. They also have a little restaurant too. Now the only thing they need is to bring green chorizo to the states.

Yelp
I give this three stars because the food is good, but the service is not. I don't know if it is because we don't speak Spanish, but it took ten minutes to be noticed, the food came quickly, but the waitress never came back. She passed by us several times, but never acknowledged us. We had to flag someone down to get the check. If you can stand bad service for good food, try it. I'd come back for the food, but be warned about the service!
