Year in Eater 2022: The Best Meals at San Francisco-Bay Area Restaurants | Eater SF

"I had fesenjoon at Alborz Persian Cuisine in Walnut Creek — a dish of crushed walnuts simmered in pomegranate sauce with my choice of beef meatballs and yellow Basmati rice on the side — and it was heavenly." - Eater Staff

Had a great experience at Alborz! Mr. David, the owner, was incredibly kind and welcoming — you can tell he truly cares about his guests. The food overall was delicious. The Zereshk Polo was flavorful, and the Chicken Barg stood out — tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The Koobideh Kabob had great texture, though it was a bit on the salty side for my taste. The Salmon Kabob was nicely grilled and tasted fresh. We also loved their Doogh and the flavor of their Moosir — both were refreshing and authentic additions to the meal. The only downside was the salad, which didn’t quite match the quality of the rest of the dishes. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and craving good Persian food with warm hospitality.

This restaurant is close to San Francisco and offers a variety of Persian dishes — kabobs, stews, and more. We ordered an appetizer and kabobs. For the appetizer, we chose Mirza Ghasemi (an eggplant and tomato dip). After waiting 14 minutes, they told us they had run out of it. Seriously?! We were already starting our main dish when they informed us. Even worse — I noticed the table next to us (who ordered before us) was enjoying Mirza Ghasemi. Not very professional. At the very least, they could have offered us a different appetizer on the house to make up for the mistake. (Tip: check with the kitchen first — don’t wait 15 minutes to say something!) The Sultani Kabob was good — juicy and tasty. The bathroom was a bit odd (see my photos) — no privacy at the men’s stalls. Parking is limited, though there is street parking nearby (paid)

Delightful place in Walnut Creek. This is a must go place for Lebanese/Mediterranean cuisine lovers. We came here, party of 4 and had a wonderful time. The cuisine is very authentic and well prepared, we loved the seating area, which was outside. We ordered some kebabs with rice and tea. The quantities were generous , and the staff very friendly Will visit here again

Alborz Restaurant in Walnut Creek offers a charming and spacious setting with a cozy, inviting design that creates a warm and relaxed dining atmosphere. The ambiance is definitely one of the highlights with the white cloth covered tables and comfy chairs. The menu, however, has its ups and downs. The appetizer Kashke Bademjan was, as always, a delicious standout - rich, well-balanced, and full of flavor Mediterranean eggplant spread. It’s an all time must-try! Hummus was just a hummus and partially pull up behind. Unfortunately, the Barg Kebab didn’t quite make it being a bit chewy, had little to no saffron flavor, and came with an enormous side of rice that felt disproportionate to the main dish. The drink and cocktail selection was very limited and surprisingly plain (particularly old-fashioned), not aligning with the restaurant’s stylish decor. The dishes and silverware also felt a bit basic, even mismatched, compared to the overall aesthetic. Service was friendly but clearly overwhelmed having only one person covering the entire dining area on a Monday evening, despite good number of tables being occupied. All in all, place has a lot of charm and some strong points (especially interior design), but it could benefit from more attention to consistency, staffing, and detail.

There was a show with a DJ playing persian music. It turned out to be a great and fun night. The food was great and with all the singing and dancing the atmosphere was fun too. We had masto khiar, sabzi for starter, chicken kebob and the kubideh beef kabob as main course and baghlava for desert. You can get wine and cocktails too also they have persian traditional called doogh which is great.

Google
beautiful decorum, great staff and music. the food was perfectly cooked and delicious, a day to remember.

Google
Very nice restaurant with a good menu. We ordered two different lamb shank plates. Both plates were tasty but a bit too greasy for our taste. The table, service and atmosphere were very good. I recommend it 👌

Google
I cannot believe that this place is underestimated. It definitely deserves 5 stars. I got the Alborz plate that is enough for two people. It comes with 3 different skewers and 2 saffron rice. The dish was absolutely super great. I got the Cesar salad, and it was below average. More cheese and sauce should be added. I tried the Turkish coffee, and it was just like the coffee I got from Turkey; super good and super strong. Also, I got a fresh pomegranate and it was good. The place’s vibes are so good. They have internal and external tables. For sure, I am going to visit them again.

Yelp
I have visited Alborz on a few occasions tried a few other dishes. The kabobs are excellent. The stews are also great and taste authentic. Best gheimeh in the area. The restaurant is furnished and decorated very tastefully and amongst the best looking Persian restaurants in the country. Food is consistent and service is great. Highly recommend the place. Just get your barg on the rare side if you want it to taste authentic.

Yelp
Great food service a little slow but portions large nice waiter. We shared the kabobs shrimp and salmon with 3 people

Yelp
Had lunch here this afternoon. My favorites were the Mast-O-Khiar (yogurt with cucumber) appetizer and the chicken and beef koobideh plate, served with Persian rice and bread. The Persian Tea and baklava were a nice way to end the meal. The space is large and one can reserve space for parties. Service was friendly. There is limited parking in front, but plenty of street parking. Be sure to feed the meter; parking is enforced even on Sundays. I paid $1 per hour and set an alarm to step out and replenish the meter. Those who didn't received a $45 ticket. Will be back to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
This is the second time I have been to this restaurant. Last time I ordered the Sultani and loved it, but this is an Iraní restaurant, I should expect their kobideh and barg to be outstanding if not, I would have reviewed them right then and there so this time I went for the salmon to see how well they made it and I was not disappointed. The platter, as pictured, included the same rice and barbecued tomato as their other dishes with a half lemon on the side. The service was good even if it took a bit longer to receive our dinner this time, they were busy. This is an upscale restaurant designed as dining area in a palace in Iran; the curtains on the windows, the pillars holding the Persian style ceiling was well done. This place is worth a visit and is on the mid to high range, price-side.

Yelp
Dependable and solid food! Always start with their hummus and homage yogurt with cucumbers! Crowd favorite is the chicken barg! The lamb shank and some of their other specials are also very tasty and perfect for a colder day.

Yelp
Always a family favorite at Alborz. We get a variety of kababs (Koobideh, Barg, and Joojeh). Taste and portions are always good. Service is also great with the servers (and owner?) checking up on us to see if we need anything throughout our meal.

Amanda A.

Yelp
I'm Persian and I don't recommend! The food is meh but the service is absolutely HORRIBLE. Make sure to review your check!!!! They will sometimes add what you haven't ordered. They tried that with $30 and refused to take it off. The waitress was so rude we didn't tip her after that exchange, then she chased us to our car demanding payment for a tip after charging us $30 for something we never got and she told us she would take it off.

Victor N.

Yelp
Good food, fun system carousel, prizes, and adorable robot waiters! What more could you ask for?

Yelp
This is possibly my first time trying Peruvian Iranian food and it was good!! @alborz.us has lots of kabobs meat options. The unlimited pita bread is a must have. Dishes we tried are: Dolme Zabon (lamb tongue) - super tender Khoreshte Bademjoon (lamb shank) - high recommended Lots of parking outside. This place is huge it's good for big parties. Indoor and outdoor option.

Yelp
Came on a Tuesday night with my family of 5. Place was empty. Only on other person eating at the Bar area. Place was eerily quite with no ambiance at all. My wife even asked if I was sure they were open. The food was solid but not great. I came here once with an old coworker and it was good but tonight's chicken was very bland and not much flavor. The Filet mignon kabob was the same and could use some salt and pepper. The Koobieh was solid and that was the most enjoyable thing I ate. Only get getting 2 stars because we never had our waters refilled nor were my kids asked if they wanted refills on their sodas. Not sure what the employees were doing since there was only one other customer. Wanted to look at their desert but it took so long for them to come and check on us that we decided to just pay and go. Sorry won't be returning.

Yelp
We got greeted by a smiling waiter, who quickly seated us and serve this water however, we had to wait a while for the actual waitress to take our order. The decor has not changed inyears. Only a few curtains have been replaced, This restaurant has been here for a long time. Last year when I visited, I received fresh hot baked naan. Unfortunately today the Naan we got was reheated. we ordered kashk e bademjan for appetizer and the Alborz special dinner for two . This was a watery bademjan with little Kashk. Definitely not a traditional recipe. The Kobideh and the roasted tomatoes were excellent the chicken and the barg kabobs were average, lacking flavor. My least favorite was the rice which appeared steamed.

Yelp
My Persian gf and I FINALLY found a wonderful Persian restaurant up here in NoCal. #1 -- delicious food #2 -- It's a lovely place. Needs a little TLC, but large and elegant. #3 -- Very pleasant service #4 -- great menu selections, including, lots of stews #5 -- really fair prices We had the mast-o-musir ($10.50, 4.0 stars) with freshly made Taftoon bread (4.0 stars, $free). I had the beef barg ($28.95, 4.5 stars) -- totally delicious. The gf got the Joogeh Chicken ($20.95, 4.0 stars) -- she loved it. In both cases, the rice was a fair portion, and very good quality. The best ever? No. But really, really good. We're from SoCal, and there's so many great Persian places from Woodland Hills to Tarzana to Thousand Oaks. We've tried a half-dozen places here, and have been disappointed to just "good" experiences. We're both so glad we tried Alborz, and will surely come back again (and again).

Yelp
Food good and delicious very nice facility very good service. Excellent, but very expensive

Yelp
I've come here many times as well as to the one in San Francisco and Berkeley and all have been great food great service and love the atmosphere, wait staff are all very nice and quick I couldn't believe how great they were the last time I was there.

Yelp
We walked in saw the mess and walked out ! We had reservations on Mother's Day all the tables on the outside patio were not cleaned after customers had left! Short staff ! Frantic ! Uncleaned tables due to short staff and very busy ! OWNER NEEDS TO HIRE MORE SERVERS or Sell the business to someone who knows how to run a Persian restaurant! Very disappointing! Will never go there again !
google avatar

Deborah G.

Yelp
Ambiance was beautiful and elegant, the food was delicious. Service impeccable. Will go back again and again. Parking lot directly in front, no need to feed the meter!

Yelp
I'm critical of good kabobs and honestly they've improved quite a bit since a few years ago! Both their koobideh and barg are great now. I want them to keep up whatever they're doing as the improvements in the quality of food is noticeable. I go back and forth between them and Daryush, but I like Alborz better.

Yelp
Exceptional food every single time--this place never disappoints! The service is amazing, and Nassim always greets us with a warm smile. She consistently checks on our table to make sure everything is perfect, and her kindness and friendliness really stand out. The ambiance is warm and friendly and the entire staff is wonderful, always going out of their way to ensure we have a great dining experience. And the food? Simply the best Kubideh kebab in the whole Bay Area! They are masters of Persian cuisine, making it well-known and loved throughout the area. Delicious varieties served in a friendly and remarkable way--this is Persian food done right. If you want to explore new cuisines or dive into Persian cuisine, I highly recommend you start with this place.

Yelp
We've been going to Alborz since they opened in 2008. Last Wednesday we had a Persian ceremony "AGHD" for our son Sean and his wife Lourdes. This was a party of 40 friends & family with a food and open bar. David, the owner and staff Naseem, Paloma and the sweet busboy, were all great and helpful. David let us take over the sound system, he had freshened up the back room for us with fresh paint and wall arts. He was there the whole time and kept asking if we needed anything. He also allowed us to keep everything that we brought with us for the ceremony to keep in his office so we could just enjoy our time and go home without loading everything up. Food has always been great. We definitely recommend party of any size to consider Alborz private room.

Mork B.

Yelp
Great service and tasty food. The family loves the ambience and plentiful food. The Chicken koobideh and bath kabob are juicy and fresh.

Vida M.

Yelp
Be careful for their charges. They over charge you and no good service!!!!! Their food is not worth paying for it !!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Disappointing. Had the Caesar salad which had 3 ingredients: romaine lettuce, thank you generic dressing and some shredded parm cheese. NO croutons or garlic or any taste. Has the kebabs for 2 which included steak, chicken, beef. Sooooo, bland and overcooked. The flatbread was amazing and service nice. Would not ever return.

Yelp
This place has become one of my favorites after living in the area for over 10 years, it took me way too long to check it out. It's a beautiful space, with great ambience and service, and the most flavorful, rich, fragrant, and comforting food all around. I always leave full and it has become my new favorite comfort food.
google avatar

Bernadette F.

Yelp
Service and food is very inconsistent here. We have done take out a handful of times and each time besides our first visit there has been something to say. The second time we took take out, the grilled tomato still had the sticker on the tomato. The third time, the lady gave one piece of bread and the remaining were some cracker like bread for our hummus. And lastly our most recent visit, they did not give any bread for our hummus. As for placing an order via phone is simple and quick. I just wished their customer service was more consistent. it had me thinking how is service for a dine in experience. But none the less, it will do for now as a frequent restaurant, even if it's just mediocre.

Yelp
Delicious combination kabob lunch esp the chicken kabob, it has a very unique flavor.

Yelp
The most awful and terrible experience ever. I wish there was a ) star review they don't even deserve one star. I would avoid this restaurant for many reasons. Here are a few: We had made reservations for group of 20 and when arrived, found out their were short on staff and service suffered. There is little to no parking and many of us had to park far away. Our food was not cooked properly as several of our guests complained about their rice and meat under cooked. I ordered Lamb shank and Baghali polo and upon arrival, I can say I had never ever tasted such awful shank (no taste to watery shank juice) and unlike any such dish, it had chunks of completely raw vegetables (carrots, green beans) in the awful juice. I had one bite of the dill-fave rice and it was old and (rice and fava very dry) not fresh. I just could not even start on the shank or rice. I had another guest try my rice and shank for their opinion and they could not eat it either. As I was hungry and asked to return the dish, Sholeh, the manager arrived and rather then being understanding as to why I was returning the order, she became very disrespectful and confrontational. Another guest had ordered a Chicken Soltani with 1/2 rice and salad and their dish was wrong (just a chicken with all rice). To not have to wait for another dish and be nice, I accepted to just eat this wrongly prepared dish. The guest's Chicken Soltani finally arrived and again, it was prepared wrongly ! without the salad. When we faced Sholeh again to tell her about all of this, rather than getting a proper response from a good manager serving a large group of 20, we got her anger treatment with a lot of disrespect in front of all of our guests. At the end, they force charged us a 23% tip ! This is no appropriate. A service tip should not be forced onto guests. We did not argue and couldn't leave soon enough. I believe this restaurant needs to add staff, parking and fire this inept and poor attitude manager. Never again.

Yelp
I feel like I'm living in an episode of Kitchen Nightmares. To be fair, the food is top notch, and most of the servers were polite and did their job respectfully. To the cooks and the servers that provided the great experience, I commend you, and this small tip was for you. Sorry, it would have been more, but this experience ended with an exceptionally bad taste. This was to be a 5-star review up until one server absolutely trashed and tarnished things. Without too many details, one server was quite disrespectful and giving attitude and the end of the meal. On top of that, after asking me if I wanted a box, she looked at me with the most snarky look and instead handed it to my friend. Who the hell does that on an initial interaction? I appreciated everything about this restaurant until that happened. On top of the initial disrespect, the check came and we had a duplicate charge for a meal on the bill which she rudely disputed with one of my friends. After an argument that involved pulling our actual server into the drama, she finally pulled the charge off the bill and fixed the wrong. On top of that, the experience was ruined for the other friend who we were introducing to Persian cuisine. Turns out, she's a repeat offender of treating customers terribly based on the reviews from other patrons. We refuse to return to this restaurant unless this employee is on vacation, and we hope she goes on vacation indefinitely. I am sorry for the people who have to work with her. Obviously, this employee doesn't know a dammed thing about being in the restaurant business and it shows from the near empty dining room that could have been full of the patrons she burned bridges with. Treat all your customers with respect. This is an absolute embarrassment. Hell, if the cooks and the good staff left to start their own restaurant, I'd happily support their endeavor 100%.
google avatar

Corba D.

Yelp
Very good service, attentive and helpful. The hummus was a little peppery but solid. The lavash could have been a little fresher. The chicken kabobs were tender and not too charred. (I added a little salt.) I really liked the Shirin Pol which made the regular basmati rice a bit more interesting. They add almonds, raisins, pistachios and orange peel to the regular basmati rice for an extra $4.50. I didn't know that they offered wine until I saw them bringing a couple of glasses to another table. I'm surprised that they didn't give us a wine list along with the menu.
google avatar

Ada B.

Yelp
I ordered take out food here and was the worst experience. There were two employees at the front and just looked at me while they were talking to a guy I believe someone they know. I mean, they could have at least said something instead of leaving me stood there. My food was actually been ready and was sitting next to the cashier. The food was OK compared to other Persian food I've been to in the Bay Area! Restaurant like this, should always have a greeter and not ignore take out orders. Remember these are the customers who got you going during pandemic. Most importantly, First impression starts at the door; the greetings and the smile can sometimes make up when the food isn't too good. How you made me feel as I entered the door is a crucial part of the dining experience and even to go orders. I'm not going back here for sure.

Yelp
Good quality is not good and today surprisingly I found the wire in the food. You be the judge
google avatar

Anand P.

Yelp
Delicious Persian food served to you fresh! The restaurant is huge and has plenty of seating. Fortunately, the place isn't packed. No need for a reservation, you will find a table. I had the lamb filet and it was tasty. The lamb was cooked just right and it was juicy and tender. It came with delicious saffron rice and with a grilled tomato. I highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for Persian food.
google avatar

Tracy S.

Yelp
This is the Tadig for $15.95. The Tariq wasn't crispy at all. It was like a thin, chewy skin like imagine the consistency of a thin fruit Rollup--floppy and inedible. The stew that came with it was cold and the meat pieces were dry. Definitely won't order from here again. Terribly disappointing. I miss the Persian restaurants in Irvine. This was not worth it.
google avatar

Nina P.

Yelp
Amazing food & service!! We ordered mostly the combo koobideh chicken & beef, which was very tasty and had huge portions. Service was great, staff was very efficient. We will definitely be back again!!
google avatar

Aitak S.

Yelp
Just left this restaurant today. Came for lunch and ordered some food and ordered ghormi sabzi for my daughter. The sabzi was burnt and watery. The taste was awful.

Zelaikha A.

Yelp
I want to let everyone know that people who works here are thefts. I recently ate at this place pay with my credit card, and tip cash. When they give me my receipt the price was right few days later I check my bank account notices they charged me extra. I had no idea why? Called my bank fill a claim got my money back. Please guys check your bank account these people are thefts. I do not recommend this place to anyone
google avatar

Silvia N.

Yelp
Good taste Value , great atmosphere. Service is always on point . Always a great place to visit .

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I won't be going back. The koobideh had no flavor. I think they forgot the spices. I tasted like meat only. Neither me nor my guest liked it as it wasn't worth eating. The flat bread was dried out. It didn't fold. It cracked. Why would they even serve us old flat bread? The place is lovely inside. I do like that about it. The mint, parsley, onions, etc., that accompanied the stale bread was fresh. Update: I think the chicken one has gone bad.
google avatar

Benjamin A.

Yelp
Be aware that if you don't like the food and return it, you have to pay for it. We got Fesenjoon and Barg, the Barg was OK but Fesenjoon was horrible. I returned it, and once they brought the check they did not remove the Fesenjoon. I asked the server why did you charge me for Fesenjoon, is that how you treat your customers when they don't like the food! He said, the owner doesnt allow us to remove the food returned by customers from the check. What a customer service! I guess that's the case amongst the Iranians and Iranian businesses.
google avatar

Khumid G.

Yelp
Unprofessional customer service, makes you feel that you're not welcomed!!! Food is good though but for the price you can definitely find a better place. They don't deserve even a penny for the tips!!!
google avatar

Mitra K.

Yelp
I always give my favorite places that have disappointed me some time to get their lives together, then I'll give another try. Many times they redeem themselves but sometimes they don't. I can't speak for delivery but as far as dine in goes, they did for the most part yesterday which was a relief since it's been a staple for us for at least 10 years! ****Dine in service was great like always. ****The food was absolutely delicious. My only complaint was that the rice portions have been cut in half. Although I knew they'd charge me, I ordered another Zereshk Polo for my koobideh. The dolmeh was so good that we made a to go order as well and the dough was some of the best we've had! *The reasoning behind my one star less is what a mess their restroom was. It was pretty gross so I hope they get in it.

Yelp
We were on a road trip and stopped in for lunch as this was the closest kebob place near the freeway. Sadly we now find ourselves living in a town with zero middle eastern food! Sad face. How did we do this? I have no clue. But since we knew we'd be driving through the bay area, I quickly did a look up to find a place for lunch. We found this and stopped in. It looked really nice and fancy inside, but not too many people there so we were sat right away. We looked like beach bums with our t-shirts and shorts and flip flops, but no worries! Nothing was going to stop us from having kebobs!! Right away the waiter brought out a basket of lavash, butter, raw onions and the best darn feta I've had in a long time! We loved this! We each ordered different kebobs to share. Beef koubideh, chicken koubideh and Jougeh which all came with rice and a grilled tomato. We split everything 3-ways so we could each have a taste of everything. It was all well cooked and delicious! Although at first glance I felt it did not look like enough food (when I'm hungry my eyes need a huge amount of food to feel full LOL) truth was, I was very well satisfied after eating everything. It was plenty and I was very happy with it.

Yelp
Naseem and her staff at Alborz were above and beyond from planning, set up, during the lunch and clean up. They even took care of our cake and plating! Our company had a luncheon on for 16 people and they were able to accommodate us perfectly. The food was delicious and the service was great. I recommend the 3 combo plate, baklava and the appetizer platter. Great potions! They also had a baby shower with a large party at the same time. Great for large parties! Highly recommend and we will definitely be back. Thank you Alborz!

Yelp
Alborz has been on our list to try for the longest time. Persian & American friends recommended it to us & said its the best one out here. So of course we finally tried it with my hubby. The location is by the street & there is limited parking, so if the parking is full you have to drive around to park. They have indoors & outdoors seating with a very Persian decor that I liked. We were greeted by the hostess once we walked in & got seated right away. For a Sunday lunch time it had plenty of open tables so it worked out perfectly. We ordered mast musir, masto khiar, Ash reshteh, tadig with fesenjoon, kabab koobideh, kabab soltani barg with jooje (chicken breast), turkish coffee & dough. A complementary dish of herbs & fresh bread was brought over to our table. They make their bread in house & they have the traditional oven to make it. Service was great & the food was brought over pretty quick. The Ash reshteh was the first dish we had & the flavor was on point. So homie & flavorful. The same goes for the tadig with fesenjoon, absolutely delicious! Like my mom made it! We like our fesenjoon a balance of sweet & sour because different locations do make it differently (sometimes more sour or sweeter). This was perfectly done to our liking. The only complaint we had about ash & the fesenjoon is that the dishes were served really cold. Our kabobs were the super stars of the courses & looked so delicious! My barg was so tender & juicy I was in heaven! Same for my jooje! the flavors were so on point! The saffron rice was made beautifully as well & was the perfect bite with the kabobs. My hubby really liked his koobideh too! He got the zereshk polo for his rice & he enjoyed it to the last bite. His dough was also house made & carbonated to perfection. I finished off my meal with a warm hearty Turkish coffee & it was the perfect ending. I would say the flavors of all the dishes were absolutely original & very good but some dishes needed to be served warmer temperature wise. I understand why everyone likes Alborz more because they are the most original out of all so far flavor-wise. We had a really good experience & will definitely go back for more. Thank you

Yelp
The food here is always good. Just stay away from their "Tabouli Salad". It's nothing like the description: it's only cucumber, onions and tomatoes and nothing else missing more than half of the ingredients listed on the menu. The worse part is that it's like $10 for a sad pile of haphazardly-cut cucumbers. Sad because everything else we usually order is great. Just not this BS of a "salad".

Yelp
The food and service was great. Food quality was fantastic. We ordered "Ash" and it tested fresh. The kabab was also fresh and juicy. Overall I was very happy with their food and service. The only thing was that the seats were a little close to each other and I wish they were a little bit farther apart. The food and service was great. Food quality was fantastic.
