On the Grid : Alby's

"Natasha and Matt’s love for sandwiches goes back many years, from teenage jobs in O’Briens, to sandwich tours of NYC. They’ve spent the better part of nine months renovating the old Snax Cafe venue into a relaxed mid-century haven on the edge of Leith. Their “big hot sandwiches” are all served on focaccia squares, generously stuffed with filling and smothered in delicious condiments. The short-rib is a signature, with red sauerkraut, parsnip crisps and horseradish mayo. The veggies will not be disappointed either with spiced roasted cauliflower, garlic & lemon tahini, coriander dressing and pickled onions. They’re open late, so you can bring along your own wine/beers too. A great alternative dinner spot, just don’t leave it too late, they’re selling out fast." - fourcolourblack

Delightful! It’s a smaller menu, with 4 sandwich options (including vegetarian and vegan options!), but the sandwiches were incredible. The foccacia is light and airy, and the grilled courgette, whipped feta, and rocket sandwich (and another ingredient I’m forgetting) was perfect after the Water of Leith walk. Would recommend!

What a great, tasty sandwhich. Here I was expecting it to be just another chicken thigh, deep fried and slapped in between breads, boy was I soo wrong. The chicken thigh is fried perfectly with none of the mushiness that dark meat usually taste. The chicken is marinated with Indian(?) sauce which is a first for me, and honestly, it's amazing!! Another shout out is the foccacia they uses, it's huge but not so dense and hard as to make you feel overtly full afterwards. The only thing I wish is that they added mustard seed sauce to add some tanginess into the fried chicken but I am just too finicky.

This is a fantastic sandwich!! I've never had such a delicious sandwich. I found it from google maps, many people said very good, so I decided to try it. I came here about 3pm, it’s not busy time. I really hope everyone to try it

Delicious focaccia, with an option for meat, pescatarian and veggie. Super cute aesthetic. We went for a night time take away just before closing, and it was exactly what was needed.

I’ve been promising myself a visit here since it opened. I finally got around to it today. It was fantastic. But be aware: the sandwiches are as described. They’re really big. But also delicious. The oregano fries were wonderful too Service is great too. I overheard one of the staff offer a Deliveroo rider some water which was really thoughtful. Will definitely go again.

This was an awesome sandwich. Tofu laksa - crunchy, sweet, sour, chewy. Delicious!

Great little place tucked away. The food was really good, of course not many options though. The seats could have been a little better, the one by the window meant my friend was sat quite high up.

Having visited here for the first time, this is now one of my new favourite lunch spots. As shown in the photos, they serve a small menu of enormous hot sandwiches, served in fresh focaccia. They’re stuffed with ingredients, and are really generous portions overall. The menu is diverse enough for everyone to find something they like, and there’s also a menu or sides too. Have one of the sandwiches for lunch and you’ll hardly need to eat for the rest of the day. There is also a good selection of soft drinks. The restaurant interior is clean and bright, and the staff were friendly, attentive, and had excellent taste in music. I’ll definitely return.
