The Best Restaurants in Oregon’s Willamette Valley | Eater Portland

"If you’re looking to splurge on jam, Alchemist’s Jam in downtown McMinnville is the answer, with unusual offerings including strawberry lemon ginger, marionberry with coffee and cocoa, peach vanilla nutmeg, and boysenberry grapefruit sea salt. But beyond being a place to stock your pantry or buy gifts, Alchemist’s Jam is also a bakery, serving sourdough baguettes and boules as well as flaky croissants, sweet and savory galettes, cinnamon buns, and cookies. Pair that with an espresso drink and you’ve got the ideal fuel for strolling the town." - Katherine Chew Hamilton

This bakery has wonderful sweet and savory baked goods and the best sour dough bread! They were graciously open on Mother’s Day for all us mothers. Thank you dear Alchemist Jam and Bakery staff, we appreciate you!

Don't hesitate to visit this place, I tried the chocolate croissant and cinnamon roll, were outstanding. Also, the cashier is amazing and friendly. Inside is like to be in France 🇫🇷.

Beautiful shop! Came for the jam to take as gifts back home, was in awe of all the fresh pastries and breads. Wide variety! We even received a sample. Employees were so kind. Marking this as a favorite.

Hidden gem alert! Historic downtown location. Coffee was 9.2 out if 10. Pastries 8.8! Great service! Fast! Delicious! Check it out!!!

Google
i had some marionberry jam from a store at the pdx airport terminal that i brought to work to eat with my colleague’s fresh sourdough bread, it was incredible! this time, i caught the store when it was open so i got to go inside and see where this gorgeous stuff comes from. super friendly service, delicious products and small gifts inside!

This Place is an Absolute Gem! I have been there twice now. The Sourdough bread is over the top Amazing. Tasted like it was baked that morning. Bagels were Fresh as well. Brought my daughter a Chocolate chip cookie and she seemed to enjoy it! Got a bottle of their Strawberry Jam. Wow! Coffee tasted Delicious and did the Trick! The two women working at the time were patient with me and friendly. Good Vibes in the Alchemist Jam & Bakery! I will definitely be going back.

We stopped here for breakfast and coffee on our way out to Lincoln city and we are SO glad we did. It’s the cutest shop with very kind people. We got the sour dough cinnamon roll, potato cheddar and chive galette, and jam lattes! The cinnamon roll was easily the best cinnamon roll we’ve ever had and the galette and lattes were incredible as well. We will be going back here!

Google
Very cute and high quality bakery in the area! Highly recommend the cheesy sourdough bagel with cream cheese and the lemon poppyseed scone - both were incredible. I would even venture to say that the bagel is in competition with those in NYC!

Yelp
Teeny, tiny, shop on a side street off of Third Street, the main drag in downtown McMinnville. The jams and pastries are superb BUT, big caveat here--their hours of business are very narrow. A few days for only a few hours, and there is a reason for this: The products are made for the day, and they are made by the small staff, who needs time to get it all done. Go early or you will miss out on those pastries. The staff, by the way, is just wonderful and quite willing to chat and give you insight to the various products.

Yelp
The owner took lead the start of the towns Reusable container program! The pastries and jam are sooo good! The staff is attentive and sunny.

Yelp
Wow, amazing pastries all around. We ordered a few savory and a few sweet and all have been delicious so far (took some home for later). We also ordered some lattes and a lemonade, all really good. Would come here again just for a ham and cheese croissant. The service was great although I did get a few stares when I accidentally took the wrong lemonade, even though I asked to be sure, sometimes people make mistakes! Would still come back for the pastries 10 times out of 10.

Yelp
We were in the area having a quick bite to eat and grabbed an ice cream cone up the street. There was a street fair going on so we took a stroll up the street to explore. Unfortunately this place was about to close at 3pm and they had sold out for the day of bread and pastries. The coffee machine was shut down already too. We purchased two of the jams at 16.99 each to support local and we will visit again earlier in the day next time we are out in the area of McMinnville.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful! I had found this gem before our Portland trip and had added it to the list but was not expecting to be as blown away as I was! We actually saw them at the Farmer's market and grabbed the Potato Galette and a cookie before some wine tasing, and honestly couldn't stop thinking about them for the entire day. The next morning, we were lucky enough to be staying a block away so we started our morning here. Its a cute little spot with a great staff! We grabbed a biscuit with marionberry jam, another sugar cookie, an apple galette and a potato galette and every single thing was phenomenal. I cannot wait for our next trip back because I can't stop thinking about how delicious everything was!

Yelp
Best baked goods in Mac! Always fresh and delicious, they go out of the way to make awesome food. I go there two times a week.

Yelp
Better than mediocre baked goods that look better than they taste. Friendly staff and an inviting atmosphere makes this a pretty good destination but don't get too excited

Yelp
I have been a baker for 4 decades. Nearly 15 years at Beaverton Bakery. I visited Iceland recently and their Bakari are all impressive. I will say the baked goods here are and par with any of their best.

Yelp
Man oh man, I LOVE Alchemist's Jam! Though a bitty little shop down a side street (Ford) off McMinnville's beloved Third Street, they've packed so much inside to adore. If you live in the area, you are likely familiar with their exemplary jam. Crafted of local fruit in both traditional and more creative flavors, you'll no doubt discover a variety to tempt you. While this is the foundation for their shop, there is so much more on offer here. If seeking gifts or just shopping for fun, sustainable bath, body, cleaning, and home products abound. Also, beautiful pottery, artwork, books, and toys. Once you've filled your arms with the above treasures, it will be time to select a drink and some baked goods. They have a short and sweet coffee and tea menu, and though it wasn't listed, on a recent visit I inquired about hot chocolate, which they happily made. It tasted like melted chocolate mixed into frothed milk and was absolutely divine. My husband enjoyed his latte as well. As a notorious sweet tooth, the baked goods are my go-to. I think I've tried nearly all and can attest to their excellence. Many include AJ's namesake jam, but there are savory pastries on offer too, as well as loaves of sourdough bread (you can even buy some sourdough starter to bake your own!). The cookies are my favorite, as they are hefty, about as thick as three regular cookies stacked, and always moist and perfectly baked. I love the Moon Phase double chocolate cookie most of all - not-too-sweet, super dark chocolatey, and I find the sprinkling of powdered sugar to match the current phase of the moon incredibly charming. Everyone here is so kind and friendly, it's really a joyful space. There is a bistro table outside if you'd like to enjoy your goodies there, but they are just as delicious imbibed as you wander downtown McMinnville. The bad thing about Alchemist's Jam is that they are only open Thursday through Sunday, so you can't get their goodies any old day. But that just means you treasure them all the more when you do!

Yelp
MUST TRY! The baked goods are so soft and chewy, even the shortbread! I don't know how the staff does it, I would eat ALL the cookies if I worked here!! The staff was soooo friendly and even gave my kiddo a sticker when she wanted to run off with the doorstop lol! Love this small little shop so much! They also have a ton of fun stickers, to include feminist and LGBTQIA+ stickers. Love the inclusivity of this space! We ended up also buying 2 jams and I can't wait to return for more!

Yelp
Amazing pastries, and the freshest coffee ever. the owners are so accommodating and friendly!

Yelp
Soooo good! We were walking around and saw this cute place. We bought a sourdough cinnamon roll, plum shortbread, sugar cookie and a chocolate cookie. They were all wonderful. Big cookies seem to be either too hard or raw tasting. These were amazing and I want more!

Yelp
What a gem! We stumbled upon this cute cafe and bakery when detouring through McMinville -- and couldn't have chosen a better spot to snack and caffeinate. The service was friendly and quick; the staff provided an overview of the baked goods du jour. We opted for double espressos (not bitter, hooray!) and a fabulous buckwheat chocolate cook. Love a strong alternative flour baked good! Highly recommend.

Yelp
Best baked goods in McMinnville! The owners and the employees are incredibly nice. They have amazing jams to take home and they make great gifts. They have really good espresso and drip coffee as well.

Yelp
Oh this place hits all the spots. You could come and mow down a Christmas list and leave with a full belly. We originally heard about this place through Thistle. They had used one of the jams in a sauce and it was amazing. The jams are truly unique. From boysenberry grapefruit to Marion berry whiskey. There's just so much range. The pastries are awesome too. I got the breakfast tart(?). It was a buttery flaky rich shell with egg and a layer of I think the peach habanero jam with chunks of bacon. Such an amazing bite. Must get again. Even the simple cookies were incredible. Gotta check it out!!!

Yelp
Cute little store. Never thought I'd find a delish cinnamon roll inside we came for the cinnamon roll and grabbed a cookie also. We will be back. The staff was super friendly. The store was cute and clean. We will be back!!!

Yelp
This place is awesome. The drinks are truly incredible! The Jam and Spice Lattes are soooooo good. Not to sweet and perfectly balance. There isn't a bad pastry in the case. The baristas are awesome and knowledgeable. Ended up being my favorite spot in McMinnville.

Yelp
This is a review by a vegetarian Dry, doughy, tasteless, heavy, expensive cardamom bun

Yelp
Before this place was a 5 star all day. We loved their biscuits, so flaky!! Their guillette also very good. However recently their quality just fell off. The biscuit and guillette were very doughy. So I decided to try it again maybe that day they had a bad batch but no same doughy bread. Given their reputation I decided to give them one more opportunity because (third times a charm)I really have enjoyed their bread before. Unfortunately I was disappointed once again. Something has changed maybe they over tweaked their receipt or they have a new baker. Regardless I can't do it anymore. I was willing to pay good money for the great quality but that has changed. Sorry I can't recommend them anymore. If things change let me know.

Yelp
Amazing pastries! Staff very knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. Supplied 3 days of breakfast over a 5 day trip. Something delicious every day!

Tish G.

Yelp
Super cute little shop/bakery- everything was delicious. They sell out, don't come by too late.

Yelp
This is a cute place with nice staff. Everything is tasty and the decor is perfect. Making McMinnville look good!

Yelp
When my partner and I visit mcminnville we go here every morning... when they're open! Go early if you want pastries, they sell out quickly. Best mocha in town, the jam latte is also incredible. The sprinkle cookies are my favorite (I'm addicted). All of the staff is very friendly and it's a really charming spot. Small selection of art, books, sustainable products ect. We usually stock up on jam, the pear butter and raspberry cardamom rose are the best!

Neer S.

Yelp
This place gets BUSY on weekend mornings. Pastries and baked goods are quite good. Their main jam coffee is inconsistent. Ive ordered a few times and sometimes it is quite sweet, others undetectable notes. When its right, its right. Their jams are scrumptious though so dont walk away without buying one or more.

Yelp
Love this place. My favorites are the breakfast galette and the buckwheat espresso cookie. Both are unique and delicious.

Manny M.

Yelp
My absolute favorite place for the best pastries! If you're looking for a lil sweet treat in the AM this is the place to go. The staff here is super nice and accommodating and the ambiance is great. Though the inside is a tad bit small it's super cute! Highly recommend everything but one of my favorites is the sugar cookie or the chocolate croissant.

Yelp
Such a cute little hole in the wall in downtown McMinnville! The two people working were super sweet, and knowledgeable, this place just had an amazing atmosphere! There is no seating area, which helped the building feel a little more open. We got a super tastey sourdough baguette, a yummy buckwheat espresso cookie, and the best latte i've ever tasted! They made house made caramel so i had to get a latte with that and some oat milk!

Brian J.

Yelp
Mixed reviews. The chocolate chip cookie and biscuit with jam were excellent. The cookie was baked perfectly. The giant cardamom knot was not edible. It was basically raw in the middle. The focaccia was dense.
google avatar

Don C.

Yelp
Not impressed. I got their lemon blueberry preserves and it was flavorless. They gave me a skateboarders discount so at least they didn't have to pay full price.

Yelp
My new favorite coffee shop! Everyone is so friendly & the pastries (especially the sourdough) is sooo good. Not to mention the coffee 10/10!

Bond B.

Yelp
Best bagels I've ever had in my life - and considering I'm over 70 and love bagels, that is a LOT of bagels!! Chewy on the outside, yummy sourdough flavor with a hint of whole grain on the inside with a luxurious elasticity. Wow. Everything else we had was over-the-top good, but I'll be hard pressed to order anything other than more bagels in the future.

Patty L.

Yelp
Seriously, this little bakery makes the best cookies I have ever had. Their buckwheat espresso cookies are AMAZING !! I literally drove from Portland all the way to McMinnville to buy two cookies !!! I'm sure their jams are fabulous as well but those cookies are the BOMB :))))

Jess H.

Yelp
Whoa. This place is amazing. The baked goods are so beautiful & so tasty! Especially recommend the breakfast tarts. The Staff are kind and very helpful. Stop in. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
This is one of Oregon's best bakeries hiding as a jam shop. Sure their jam is great, but their bake goods are even better. We owned a scratch European bakery for many years in the past, and we really know what a delicious, quality bake looks and taste like. Their stuff is top notch. So glad we stumbled upon it. The focaccia and savory pastry blew us away. Go for the jam if you must, but hang around for the baked goods. Terrific hidden gem!
