The Best Restaurants and Bars Around Sonora, California | Eater SF

"On the way home from a day spent at Calaveras Big Trees, stop for a meal in the small town of Murphys, about 17 miles north of Sonora. Alchemy’s front room — painted Provençal yellow with tall windows and chandeliers casting warm light — feels cozy with a soupçon of posh. Global and local wines pair with dishes like banh mi with pickled onions and citrus slaw or mushroom risotto with shiitakes, enoki, and wood ear mushrooms. If it weren’t for the gold nugget bread and crab bacon mac and cheese with asiago and aged cheddar, you might swear you were in Avignon." - Christina Mueller

From Sacramento to Yosemite: How to Plan the Best California Gold Country Road Trip | Eater SF

"Painted Provençal yellow, this restaurant reflects a French bistro soul in dishes like an ahi niçoise and a filet mignon napped with Roquefort cream sauce, yet its mussels with green curry and pickled garlic and fried chicken with sweet Asian chile glaze show a local-meets-global ethos that carries through the wine list." - Christina Mueller

What a lovely gem of a restaurant!! My husband loved his hamburger and fries. We had gold nugget bread with corn, cilantro, jalapeno and parmesan and then I had a delicious curry bowl! Great chef and the waitress had a great personality. I wish I lived closer.

First time in Murphy’s Ca and we had dinner at Alchemy. Great food. The meatloaf as an entree and the Calamari as an app was very very tasty. The food was great but the service was even better!!!! Our server, Ty, was wonderful. He was friendly and attentive… We asked for a spot to see the sunset and he gave us precise directions to a perfect spot only about 15 min away. Thank you Ty for making our stay in Murphys so much more special.

The white mac & cheese was very good, The peanut butter chocolate cake is definitely share size. Its good and very rich. This was our first time here and we really enjoyed our visit. Prices were reasonable and parking was very easy to find.

Google
Two of us had dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by this venue. The ambiance is nice with a fireplace and candles. Our server was very cheerful. The menu had enough diversity to stand out from other restaurants in Murphys. The quality of the food was excellent and the food came out in a timely manner. We had the gold nugget bread which is about as good a cheese bread appetizer as we have ever had the chicken curry soup was superb with excellent seasonal ingredients highly recommended. The capris salad was delicious fresh and unusual. Really good. The fried chicken was also very good. The dessert menu looked ok but we were too full. Dinner for two was about $80.

Google
2024 Alchemy restaurant is still my favorite place to go for dinner. I love the friendly atmosphere, and their dinner menu is the best. We order the Rib Eye, the Calamari, and the Beet Salad. It was enough food for me and my beastie to share. 2019 Alchemy restaurant is a really nice place to dine. It's location is very appealing, and they even have a kid's menu. Their service is prompt and courteous, plus the food is delicious. Surprisingly, my girls absolutely loved the calamari and the brussel sprouts.

Google
Just a heads up to vegans. There were no vegan options on the menu. When I asked the waitress if they could make anything vegan she said no. I asked if she could ask the chef and she said no they were too busy. That’s fair. It was Valentine’s Day. So this is more to let vegans know there really isn’t anything here. I’m sure it would have been a nice meal otherwise but we left.

Google
There are few restaurant in Murphys so we thought that good reviews would lead to a good experience, we were wrong. $40 for a fish dish, $20 for a salad, $28 for a polenta… what is this place? The portions are ridiculous and the price prevents any appetizer on top of a main dish (or you’ll be at $100+ for 2) The food isn’t even very tasty, good but not extraordinary. Service was good and fast, but offering a salad without bread is still weird to me. Or having uncomfortable outdoor chairs? Why? Dessert was bigger portion than a main dish, but quite horrible, it looked like they shopped all the worst ingredients at Safeway and put it together, overly sweet, no taste.

Yelp
We've waited for an hour +, but only due to a Brit Floyd with Alan Parsons Project concert ( imagine the awesome). Once we were seated, being shorthanded, the hostess herself () took the order and delivered it in now time with " special instructions ", as requested. And the second shock wave for me, formerly Chef, was the quality and presentation of the food. Devine! The Chef is amazing! For a former restaurateur, this was perfect! Thank you, guys, and since there's a lot of great concerts happening in that Ironstone Amphitheater of yours, we'll be back.))

Yelp
Canceled reservations on 3/14. Not enough people to open for dinner. They did call but it was very frustrating. Could not find another restaurant within 5 miles. Amazing lame excuse

Yelp
The ambiance is beautiful and the fireplace helped stay warm in this cold fall. Our server was polite and friendly. The food was delicious! Good and generous portions. We shared a beets salad with vanilla dressing that was so yummy! My husband ordered the scallops and polenta with mushrooms. It was yummy. Paired with the Indian rock Chardonnay. I had the ribeye steak. Cooked to perfection! So delicious! Paired with a glass of the Meiomi Pinot Noir couldn't get any better! Definitely coming back and totally recommend.

Yelp
I enjoyed dinner here so much I went two days in a row. The first night I had the bistro salad and the second night I ordered the fish tacos. Both were great and I also enjoyed the local wine selections. Best of all was the covered patio area. I was traveling alone with my two large dogs, and the staff was very accommodating, even bringing a water bowl out for them. The patio was large enough that the dogs were not near other diners. It was the perfect place to enjoy good food and wine and relax with my canines. Thank you!

Yelp
Up in the area for the long weekend to check out Calaveras Big Trees State Park and made a reso for this place - and had high hopes - ends up this place is decidedly mid. Service was incredibly slow, despite there being no shortage of waiters and waitresses and many open tables the whole evening. They gave us upwards of 10 minutes with the single page menu to decide on appetizers, then another 5 minutes to inquire about the entrees. The bill took 20 minutes to recevie at the end. While nitpicky, you truly expect better from a restaurant like this. For our appetizers, we ordered Mac and cheese and Gold nugget bread. The "world-famous" bread is just garlic bread. It was delivered lukewarm, it tasted fine, and it's still not worth the $8. The Mac and cheese was just alright. Unlike the garlic bread, it was delivered hot, and tasted slightly unique. It was the best part of the meal. The fun cocktails were also pretty good. The bartender making the drinks has more in it for them than the person who cooked our food. For our entrees, we ordered the Fried chicken, the Cheeseburger, the mushroom polenta, and the seared scallops with risotto. Initially, the second child (who got a cheeseburger) ALSO wanted fried chicken, but they were somehow out of chicken at 7pm on a saturday. Both the chicken and the burger were substandard, especially for the price; the burger, much like the golden bread, was lukewarm and basic. Additionally, the "garlic" fries on the side were indistinguishable from normal french fries. I genuinely hope that they messed up the order because of how disappointing the fries were. Absolutely not worth the $20 you pay. The $28-for-a-single-piece Fried Chicken was arguably worse than Popeyes or Chick-fil-a. The mashed potatoes and Bok choy on the side were alright, but nothing to write home about. Again, not worth the $28 fee. The mushroom polenta was genuinely good. Medium sized portion with no real protein source, but that's expected from a vegetarian dish. Was it worth the $25? Meh. The seared scallops were also good. Nothing to complain about there except for the $39 price tag. Really?? Overall, we entered hopeful, and left disappointed. The kids weren't satisfied. Poor POOR service. Would not return.

Yelp
Drop by there last week, when I go camping nearby. That day is father's day, so scallop, mussels, eggplant all are sold out. 1) Decor is nice, good to sit outside. 2) Food is good. Ordered burger, polenta, salad, breadpudding dessert. Definitely enjoy my meal there. will show some photo.

Yelp
Overall 4.5 out of 5 THE GOOD ° Pan Sear Scallops!! - Absolutely amazing! 5 out of 5 - Perfectly made scallops and risotto ° Alchemy Burger - A solid choice for anyone who wants a burger - We got it so the boys could have fries ° Outdoor seating that is dog friendly ° Had NBA games playing inside ° Servers are friendly THE BAD ° They close at 8pm - But that's all of Murhpys - What's the deal? City wide agreement that everyone closes at 8? hahah THE UGLY ° Nothing Possibly the best restaurant in Muphys! I give this place a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars. The pan-seared scallops were absolutely amazing, deserving a 5 out of 5. They were perfectly cooked, and the accompanying risotto was excellent. The Alchemy Burger was a solid choice for anyone craving a good burger, and we ordered it so the boys could enjoy some fries. The outdoor seating was a delightful feature, especially since it was dog-friendly, allowing us to bring our furry friend along. Inside, they had NBA games playing, which added to the lively and enjoyable atmosphere. The servers were incredibly friendly and attentive, making our dining experience even better. The only downside is that they close at 8 pm, which is quite early, but it seems like that's the norm in Murphys. I found it amusing and wondered if there was a city-wide agreement for all businesses to close at 8.

Yelp
If I could give it a zero I would... Just came from there for lunch. Because of the good reviews and had friends in town, I thought I'd try it. I live locally and wanted to try out some new restaurants. First of all, the waitress did not seem like she enjoyed her job or answering questions about the menu. She said the fish fryer was not working so nothing involving fish on the menu was available (which eliminated at least 1/3 of the menu). THEN when we received the food, the Asian chicken salad was not as described on the menu. The dressing was very spicy (not Asian at all) and had no cashews or toppings. My "grilled" chicken pesto sandwich looked like it was from a frozen already grilled and scoured piece, warm , but not cooked in the middle, rubbery. Server said the cook was no longer there. It seemed the server was more focused, on us providing compassion towards her situation, rather than her providing understanding toward our concerns and restaurant experience. My suggestion, get the owner in there to cook, or shut down until you get it together...don't penalize your customers. BTW, no comp or apologies on any of the items served.

Yelp
This was one of the best places to eat in murphys for many years . But this has seriously changed ! The menu is much smaller , more expensive and some how worse all at the same time ! The scallops (one of the most expensive dishes , is gritty (lots of sand ) and had a burnt taste to them dispute being tender. The risotto that comes with three fish was a thin layer and for $40 . Is way over priced This dish should never be served !

Yelp
Alchemy is a great place for lunch in Arnold, if you're looking for something more than burgers, pizza or basic sandwiches. On a warm July Saturday, it was still rather busy around 2:30. They do close between lunch and dinner (I think around 3) and we were one of the last lunch seatings. Staff was still welcoming and friendly. Their outdoor patio was lovely but it was a warm day and cooler indoor seating was the way to go. I got the tofu Bahn Mi, which was flavorful and enough for splitting in two for leftovers. Nice modern interior and interesting lunch options. I'd be back when in the area.

Yelp
One of the nicer restaurants in Murphy and great ambience and service . Liked my Thai mushroom soup and the appetizer of muscles . Wife liked her nicely done scallops dinner. Food was good enough but not 5 star worthy.

Yelp
It has been a minute since we dined at Alchemy and I am so glad we revisited them! We were looking for a restaurant on a Saturday night that would take reservations for a large group. I called several restaurants in Murphys and they were unable to accommodate our group. I luckily was able to make reservations at Alchemy. We were able to be seated earlier than scheduled which worked out well for our group after a long day of wine tasting. We all started with drinks from the bar and I must say they were amazing. I ordered a drink with pear vodka and it was very well made. For dinner we naturally started with the gold nugget bread. If you've never tasted it, you need to do so ASAP. Trust me. I ordered the pan seared pangasius which is a flaky white fish with a very mild flavor. No fishy taste at all. Everyone enjoyed their meals and the friendly atmosphere. We will definitely return.

Yelp
Higher end with a simple menu and stellar staff. Full bar with a good assortment of beers on tap and in the bottle. Good wine selection to accompany delicious food.

Close to the perfect combination of location, ambience, food and service. Knowledgeable bar staff to pick the proper wine pairing. I recommend the lamb shanks, fantastic!

Yelp
Lovely place to have a date night. The food was full of flavor. The presentation was beautiful and the service was great. They have indoor and outdoor seating available.

Yelp
This was a nice place to celebrate a birthday dinner. Food was good - the one complaint was the seats were uncomfortable outside. But would come back here again!

Yelp
The food was phenomenal, service impeccable and the wine was tasty. We will return ASAP.

Yelp
My Chemical Romance Modern American restaurant located in charming downtown Murphys, that features rotating daily specials, a solid menu and a sizable selections of adult beverages, from mixed drinks and locally-made wines, to a bevy of beer and cider on-tap. The Good: *Service from Tea (Téa?) was excellent; personable, friendly and was on-top of the menu and specials. For being such a young lady, she knows how to do her job extremely well. *Large, covered outdoor space *Menu is simple but effective. *Mixed drinks are muy, muy fuerte. 0_o *You can make reservations ahead of time. Probably a good idea as they can get busy from what we've heard, but it was fairly slow when we visited. *All our food was cooked beautifully and presented elegantly. *Def get the Gold Nugget Bread app! There's a reason the locals call it "crack bread." Pro tip: they do also sell the toppings and housemade butter to take home and make it yourself! *Dulce de Leche Cheesecake was fabulous! The perfect way to end a meal. Yeah, it was a bit sweet--but fuck was it gooooooood! The crunchy candied pecans definitely made a big difference. *Located in Downtown Murphys, so you can park and walk and visit the other shops afterward if one chooses. The Meh: *Carissa would've liked a bit more of a hard sear on her scallops, but otherwise, they were cooked perfectly. The Ugly: *Wish this place was closer so we could eat here more often. :'( TLDR: Great food, fantastic service and plenty of alcohol. Not much more one needs in life, eh?

Yelp
Ehhh .. server was nice. Food wasn't. Went for Mother's Day brunch, had nothing brunch like, just a regular lunch menu. hey I'm sure it's better. Just not today.

Yelp
While visiting my aunt in Angels Camp, she suggested we dine at Alchemy. Since I am from New Jersey I followed her lead, which was a great decision. We started with the Golden Nugget Bread and the Burrata with pasta chips. Both appetizers were fantastic, but the bread was very unique and I could have eaten all of it myself. For my entree I went with the Fried Chicken. My only criticism is that the fried chicken has a sweet Asian glaze but is served over Yukon mashed potatoes. Both the chicken and mashed potatoes were great, but the flavors of the chicken would probably pair better with rice rather than mashed. Overall it was a great experience.

Yelp
Fantastic food in this little gold rush town. 4.5 stars Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3 Cost to worth it rating: 4 (entrees ~$20-30) Opentableable: no but another online system Return worthiness: yes Highlights: - Mac and cheese: one of my fave dishes on earth and this version was solid. - Al dente shells soaking in a delightful aged cheddar cheese sauce with - Asiago that was a great consistency being not too runny or thick. Also bonus for a potato chip topping. Good portion, too I got one to share with my hub to start and they split it for us into 2 bowl. 5 stars - Burrata salad: nice with fresh heirloom tomatoes and topped with crushed hazelnuts. 4 stars - Drinks: mules were yummy! - Bread app: like a focaccia garlic bread with corn, green onions, and Parmesan cheese on top. 3.5 stars - Peanut butter chocolate cake: 2 of my fave things in one. 3.5 stars - Kids menu: options for burger, Mac and cheese, or plain butter pasta for $9- including a hot fudge sundae! - Seating: huge dining room inside and large covered areas outside Lowlights: - Crab Mac and cheese: though i loved the original, the crab didn't seem too fresh and there wasn't much of it for the extra price. It also took forever--most of us were almost done w our entrees when it arrived. 3 stars Didn't know what to expect in Murphys food and this spot was stellar--would definitely return. More Mac and cheese please!

Yelp
Wow! Just wow! I chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday on a weekend getaway. Started with a glass of Prosecco. Husband and I shared the baked brie, which was very good. We split the beet salad, which was Fantastic! and literally at that point I was full! But we had ordered dinner entrees. Has Ben actually ordered the calamari entrée appetizer as his entrée. It was ridiculously huge. There is no way anyone, two or even three people could've finished that as an appetizer. I had the scallop dish with risotto. It was fantastic! We were so so full. We couldn't even consider dessert.! Darling waitress. As the evenings are getting cooler, we chose to eat inside and it was very pleasant.

Yelp
Great food! Visited today for lunch and we sampled a lot of their menu. - mahi mahi club sandwich: blackened fish fillet with bacon, avocado and an aioli on a great bun, served with garlic fries. Wow, very good, I was shocked. - smoked bacon mac and cheese app: modest portion, which was perfect for something so rich. We loved it. - caesar salad with chicken: Huge portion! Enough for two to split, loaded with chicken. - burrata app: nice burrata portion, but served with marinara sauce and some fried pasta strips. Not my favorite combination, but something I've never seen before. - garlic bread app: Nice bread loaded with butter, cheese, corn, and fresh herbs. A little too rich for me, but the table didn't seem to agree. - kids chicken strips: Large portion, looked freshly made. - kids sundae: A secret treat we shared, very good hot fudge! Service was great, check out their large selection of local wines.

Christina K.

Yelp
Saturday afternoon we were turned away at 2:20pm because the "kitchen staff were getting ready to go to lunch" at 3pm! So apparently they stop seating 40 minutes before they close for lunch service.

Yelp
We finally were able to come back again to Alchemy. Service was very attentive with water refills and the food we ordered were all very well seasoned and cooked. There's two dining areas and some outdoor seating with heaters. We opted to sit inside which was dimly lit, warm, and the fireplace added a nice ambiance. Their side of French fries with the Alchemy burger were crispy and they don't charge extra to make it garlic fries instead of plain. The ribeye steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, and my husband seemed to enjoy his fried chicken.

Yelp
Murphys is a very charming little town with incredible restaurants & very friendly people. Downtown is this gem of a restaurant & it did not disappoint. Our server was so helpful with ideas for our our visit & explanation of menu. We had the Burrata with marinara sauce, fresh basil, oven dried olives and served with pasta chips for appetizer and it was delicious! We shared the Golden Beet salad that included honey roasted carrots, goat cheese, candied pecans & vanilla vinaigrette ~ great flavor combinations. Dinner entrees we chose were Salmon over creamy Parmesan risotto (absolutely amazing!!) & asparagus. The Pan Seared Scallops over crispy couscous cakes, greens, butternut squash purée ~ wonderful, scallops were cooked to perfection. Also shared a delicious bowl of butternut squash curry soup. This place is knocking it out of the park on every level! We'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Had dinner here with my wife. Enjoyed the gold nugget bread and crab arancini for appetizer, korean short rib special and scallops for main, and white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. All of it was delicious!!! My only complaint was the food all came out so fast I felt like i had to eat faster to make room on the table hahaha! Service was great, drinks were refilled often and waitress was very attentive. Had a great time, would recommend it!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here for our wedding anniversary and it was perfect. Great cocktail, huge beer selection and an interesting menu. Made us get things we wouldn't normally order. We shared the much room polenta dish that was rich and decadent and the meat loaf. Meat loaf was so surprisingly amazing. Flavorful and then they slice it really thin and then make it crispy. Dessert too! A lovely evening

Yelp
Came here for dinner our last night in murphys. Great service, great food, and beautiful outdoor seating area. Our server was attentive and quick. Drinks were delicious, the calamari was nice and spicy, scallops were cooked to perfection, and overall great meal. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We found Alchemy open today and decided to try again at our old favorite. Should've skipped it. The food is not any better. It is a diner posing as a fancy restaurant. The mussels, that I used to love, tasted less than fresh and, the broth was not very flavorful. The three heart Caesar, that used to be different and delicious, was nothing special, especially for the price! Guess this restaurant is off my list for good. It's a shame they couldn't reimagine this place, it's time!, hire someone that can actually cook and, give locals a place they could gather and enjoy. The service was good despite the fact that there was only one person working. Don't bother spending your money here, there are a lot of great places in town.

Yelp
We had a 7pm reservation. Showed up at 630 and was told that we absolutely couldn't be seated until 7 because they were short staffed. The place was pretty empty. It's understandable, but still not a great start to the experience. We ordered the calamari, baked brie, and golden nuggets bread for apps. For mains we got the meatloaf, fried chicken (thai chili), and scallop risotto. I ordered two mocktails. Despite there being a fulltime bartender, and the restaurant only being 1/3 full, we didn't get our drinks even after being seated for 40 mins, and even then I had to ask the waitress to check on them for us after about 30 mins. The golden nuggets bread was pretty flavorless (I was looking forward to it because it seems to be popular). The baked brie was fine, but really it's just heating up a brie in (what tasted like a pre-made puff pastry) with apricot jam on top. The calamari was pretty solid, it was a massive plate. The meatloaf sauce was too salty. The pieces of zucchini under it was the best part of the dish. The fried chicken was a large piece of breast meat, and the outside tasted like a thai-chili flavored friend chicken wing. Except it's just one giant piece of (dry) chicken breast. The scallop was fine, the risotto was overcooked and the pesto didn't taste very good. I try to base my reviews mainly on the food, and I usually discount service. So in this one, figure -0.5 stars for the late drink, and -1.5 stars for the really uninspired food.

Yelp
It's been a little while since we've been in, but I thought we'd have a great meal. Sadly I was wrong. Very disappointing dinner. We had the meatloaf, split the ribeye, the Caesar and the bistro salad. All ribeyes are fatty but this was predominately fatty, very difficult to find any meat. It was also under-seasoned. The mashed potatoes were not very warm and very gluey. The asparagus was fine. The salads were nothing special, and the meatloaf was smothered in gravy, which was the worst part. I've had several friends share that they've had good meals, but I think I'll pass on a return trip. It's a beautiful restaurant too bad the experience and food didn't match the space.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
We had the A burger and crab arincici . Everything was delicious. There is only one hostess Nondi and she is seating people making drinks and serving the food all by herself. I have to say she is doing a wonderful job. She definitely deserves a raise. It's very busy the patio is full of people and she guest seated inside and at the bar.

David C.

Yelp
So the only reason I'm giving them one star is because we got into the restaurant. After that the people were so rude that we could not believe it. We are about as easy going as anybody can be, and we hadn't even ordered a drink and the bartender cut us off. We've had one other drink at another bar before going there. And they didn't let us order any more. The food was so so, we ordered medium rare steaks and came out raw lol. I personally like mine but my friends couldn't even eat dinner. It made them so mad they were screaming at us as we were walking out the door. Couldn't believe it!!!!!!!!

Jim J.

Yelp
Was a loyal customer until the powers to be decided to charge for their cheese bread with dinner. Won't be back.

Yelp
We had a full afternoon of wine tastings, and the people at Alchemy were courteous to deal with our goofy butts for the evening. I was hoping to try the Elote fritters, but there is apparently cilantro in there and since my wife and I were splitting and she absolutely abhors cilantro, we didn't. We had another app and split the mushroom risotto which was absolutely delicious. For desert we have the chocolate/peanut butter cake, and the bread pudding. Between the two, I liked the bread pudding more as it was incredibly tender. Shall we ever visit this place again, we will absolutely be visiting.

Katy S.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I walked in to make a reservation in person. We arrived on time. Chose our table because it was a slow night. Ordered a bottle of wine (takes time to drink), appetizer, salads and meals. All came out quickly due to the slow night. All food was good but the service was curt and rushed. It was evident that we were not wanted there and were in the end, told to leave out right! I have never, I mean never been asked to leave because the staff was done and didn't want us there anymore. Verbatim, " you need to leave now." So disrespectful after spending over $200 at the establishment. You can be guaranteed that we won't be back. Marita ( I believe) , Sorry you wanted to go home, but that's not our fault it was a slow night for you!

Yelp
My wife and I brought my in-laws out to the area around Murphys for a special occasion. We figured we'd just wing it on Friday, but made reservations based on poking around at reviews for Saturday at Alchemy. When we arrived, it was really quiet. A few tables were occupied, and when we came in, they offered us basically our pick of where we wanted to sit, explaining that it was a pretty quiet evening. We picked a nice table by the window, ordered some drinks, and went over the menu. Shortly thereafter, a bunch more people showed up and it was pretty clear that the staff started getting in the weeds pretty fast. That said, our server was unfailingly nice and helpful and gracious. I wish I'd caught her name to call her out here, she was great. Three of us ended up ordering the wagyu flatiron steak while I ordered the fried chicken. I'll start with the positive - the chicken was great. I loved it. It was cooked perfectly, not dry at all, flavor was great, and the kimchi risotto that went with it was spectacular. Bok choy was a little underwhelming (which is surprising, I normally am a sucker for bok choy) but it wasn't bad. Overall, a pretty great dish. I was quite happy. The flatiron was advertised as being sous vide, which I would assume means "get to just shy of the temp you're going for, then sear to finish". I think they did, but my guess is that it just didn't sous vide long enough. If you sous vide too long, meat gets mushy. If you don't sous vide long enough, you don't give the protein enough time to rearrange itself, making the meat more tender than it normally would be at that doneness. The cook *looked* spectacular, a nice sear around the outside while being a solid med-rare in the middle. However, it was horribly tough/chewy. Like, you're going to get jaw muscle gains out of this if you decide to power through it. On the positive side, the veggies and the chimichurri were great, but when the main protein is almost unchewable, well... So, all three of our group that ordered it sent it back. I see other reviews citing the same thing, so I don't think it was just an off night. It might be that flatiron just doesn't suit that sort of cooking - I've done a lot of sous vide with hanger steak which might be a better choice, but I digress. My family ended up ordering different salads, which were pretty okayish. My wife got a caeser with light dressing and shrimp, mother-in-law a caeser with normal dressing, and my father-in-law a wedge salad. Overall fine, except my mother-in-law got the light dressing and my wife got the shrimp, which were almost hatefully overcooked. The staff were, as mentioned, unfailingly great and took the flatirons off our bill, no questions asked. So, if you find yourself here - get the fried chicken. It's great! I was super happy with my choice and if it had just been me ordering it, this'd be a five star review. However, given that this appears to be a pervasive issue with the flatiron and that everyone but me got two dishes that I don't think any of them would return for, my waffling between 3 and 4 stars ends up at 3. The place is nice, the menu looks good, it's just execution issues that need to be worked out.

Yelp
Food was delicious and reasonably priced. We made an advance reservation and we were seated at the fireplace table we requested. When we asked about why the fireplace was off we were told it was temperature regulated and comes on and off. We were the ONLY people in the restaurant the entire hour and a half we were there. The Bartender and Server couldn't be bothered with us and spent most of their time goofing off in the kitchen, swapping stories and generally being unprofessional! The fireplace came on after we finished dinner which was nice, but the servers created such an unprofessional environment, it really ruined our dinner.

Yelp
The good ...great location with in door and out door seating. The food was ok. We had to ask for a children's menu. After not receiving one. Had a party of 6 or more and received horrible service since she was getting a 20% tip regardless which I love to tip but The waitress was not attentive. We had to ask for many things. Never came by after receiving our food to see if we needed anything or additional beverages. She was lazy with her approach especially for the price of the food. Super bummed. Apparently no manager onsite.

Yelp
The restaurant is really conveniently located and the decor is lovely. It felt like an upscale place to eat but not too stuffy. The waitress was very nice and took care of us well. The water was very crisp. The plating was beautiful! My favorite was the dessert- the brownie and ice cream was soooo good! I recommend it!

Yelp
My first time here was so fantastic! Absolutely loved the food as well as the atmosphere. Fried chicken, elote corn bites and meatloaf were all delicious. The dolce de leche cheesecake and peanut butter chocolate cake were the perfect way to end a meal. The best thing we could have done to finish up our wine tasting trip!

Yelp
Excellent service!! Wonderful air conditioning and nice and clean. Bathrooms were stocked and clean. Food was very good and they gave good portions!! Max and cheese appetizer was like a full meal. Calamari was awesome with a nice light batter. Hubby had the fried chicken and I had steak. We were too full for desert. Definitely returning!!!

Yelp
Alchemy was an excellent choice for a delicious outdoor dinner. The hostess and server provided first class service from greeting to timing of food courses. The food was made with fresh ingredients and tasted marvelous. We had the fried chicken and Mac-n-cheese. I highly recommend Alchemy for a couple. It appeared kid friendly too.

Yelp
This is my new go to restaurant now when we go up the the quaint mining town of Murphys in the Sierra foothills. Service was friendly and prompt as soon as you arrive. It was an early dinner or a really late lunch at 4pm on a Sunday after spending a few hours at my favorite winery in Murphy's Val Du Vino. I can't speak on how good the service is on a crowded Saturday night until my next visit. We had my wife's best friend from college in town for a few days and we decided to take a side trip to Murphy's to pick up a case of wine and do a little tasting. We got the munchies and I wanted to try a different place. I saw this place and wanted to give them a try. I typically don't like to share, but I got talked into sharing. Everything on the menu looked great. We started with a beet salad that I would highly recommend. We then shared the fried chicken on a creamy and tasty risotto with Bok Choi. We also had the scallops on a risotto patty, and our last dish was a crab Mac n Cheese. Everyone got to have a good amount of food. All three portions were large enough to share and we were comfortably full after the meal. The price for the total meal was around $40 each, not including alcohol or dessert. We will be definitely returning to this place next time we are in town.

Yelp
Not sure how to convey our recent experience, but I'll try. We use to love this place and bring our friends and family here. Recently we stopped and boy what a difference. Only 1 girl who was alone busting tables, serving, tending bar and bless her heart for trying. The food was absolutely absolute embarrassing attempt to be called food. Only the glass of wine and water were great. Very sad and the owners should rethink their quality. Cheesy garlic bread with corn tasted like worn out overcooked croutons, fried chicken was dry, and 2nd attempt even worse. Tomato bisque was like a jar of Costco marinara sauce from a jar. The beet salad with prawns smelled funny. We were not laughing especially after getting the overpriced bill.

Yelp
We had a perfect start to our long weekend with a lunch here. We ordered the clams and elotes fritters to start with. The fritters were so delicious. The clams were great too but more of an entree size and quite filling for an appetizer. We split a blue cheese burger which was so great we forgot to photograph it. I really appreciate that when we told the waitress we were splitting everything she brought the burger already split on two plates... it's the little things. Our little one enjoyed her chicken fingers. My husband was also very happy they had Chimay on tap, as we're fond of Belgian beers. I couldn't pass up a mango cocktail on the menu though.

Yelp
Very nice place, friendly and accommodating staff. I ordered the scallop dinner with mixed greens, polenta cakes and butternut squash purée. I'm not a butternut squash person, so the waitress recommended substituting it for the mashed potatoes and it was absolutely delicious! Menu was a little pricy but worth it for a nice dinner with great food. Will definitely go back when I'm in the area again.

Yelp
Great place for lunch. I was around the area for Memorial day weekend and stopped by here for lunch. It's towards the end of the main street so if you're parking in the main lot, it's a few blocks walk. The little nugget bread appetizer was awesome. It's like their play on garlic bread with corn, cilantro, garlic, cheese and jalapeno chilies. It's super tasty. I got their bbq chicken sandwich. Some others got the burgers and mahi mahi club. All the dishes looked good and was a good portion. They also have a kids menu which comes with a sundae at the end as well. There's plenty of outdoor seating as well so it's good for alfresco dining on a nice day. Good place for lunch and the service was friendly.
