I've been buying Aldo shoes, almost exclusively, for almost 10 years. They have a decent combination of style, fit, quality and price. However, my latest buying experience at this particular store was very unsatisfactory!
I saw a pair of boots online that I wanted to purchase, and came in to the store to try. The boots fit well. So I bought them; along with another pair of dress shoes. At a check out the cashier started vigorously applying an oil lotion on one shoe and a boot of every pair, while giving me a sale pitch about it making shoes anti-scratch and water resistant. She then got very pushy about me getting the product, with it being on sale, etc. I figured, well, since I already have it on one boot and on one shoe, I might as well buy it, so that everything ages evenly.
After I came home I looked at my receipt, and realized that a 25% ($40) on the boot that was happening that day wasn't applied. In addition, the boot (which is brown), with the lotion applied, was much darker than the other boot without the lotion. I then went online, and read all reviews that say that the lotion makes brown footwear darker. It was frustrating, but I figured well, not a big deal - I'd go back, return the lotion, exchange the boots, and get my 25% discount that wasn't applied.
When I got to the place I spoke to the manager, a well-dressed African-American fellow with a bald shiny head. I've explained him the situation, and immediately he started accusing me that I was the one who had ruined the boots, and they won't take them back, because the boots are in unsellable condition. He was very animated, and kept making a dramatic face as if I'm the one trying to argue with him. I've persisted on explaining what had happened, and we went back and forth for a while.
At the end we've settled that they'll exchange the boots to another pair, and they'll refund me the extra $40 they've charged me (the discount they didn't apply). I will, however, have to keep the lotion and I won't be able to exchange or return this new pair of boots. I'm fine with it, because I like the boots, and I'm not planning to return them anyway. And the lotion was just $10. That being said, I shouldn't be left with that option, and I shouldn't argue explaining myself, when the store employees were at fault. I was just trying to do what's fair.
I will continue buying Aldo shoes. But this is the last time I step my foot in that store.
