The 36 Essential Indianapolis Restaurants

"Maybe it’s the hundreds of televisions playing every possible game that make Ale Emporium’s such an excellent spot to eat top-tier bar food, but some say the place serves the best wings in town. Along with tons of beer on tap, there are a variety of wings, pizza, and burgers flavored with various “Herman sauces” (named for Ale Emporium’s Herman Perryman). It should tell you something that the restaurant trademarked their Hermanaki wings, made with a secret blend of peppers and spices, secret sauce, and teriyaki sauce." - Mike Gillis

A great lunch spot in Indy. We sat outside and they have these blinds that come down on the patio if the sun is shining on you directly. We got a few things and loved them all. Started off with the pepperoni and mozzarella stuffed breadsticks with 2 dipping sauces. We also had the “hermanaki” wings and the “wild” wings which seemed like a medium buffalo both excellent but the hermanaki was the star of the show with the house made blue cheese!

Google
The absolute best, most consistently sized and flavored wings in the city of Indianapolis. Love that they do have smaller options of wings versus taking home a trayyy of leftovers. Two pro tips: 1)Ask for Aric in the bar’s seating section. Great dry sense of humor and incredible server. 2) Ask for your wings extra crispy. NOM. Enjoy!!!

Google
Great service. Fabulous waitress. Delicious food! Sports Bar with great atmosphere. Would eat here again! Good size appetizers.

Google
Great selection on the menu. We went for a beer, pizza and wings night, and the place was awesome! The wings were grilled and the sauces were amazing! And the pizzas were so thick and cheesey. We left with lots of take-home boxes for the next few days.

Google
Wood fired pizza and their world famous Hermanaki wings do not disappoint. Ale has been our go-to place for the wings cravings. Loved the BBQ CHICKEN PIZZA, the flavour was subtle and the crust was perfect for my liking.

Google
Fantastic wings. I tried the 3 mile island, Herman, hermanaki, and spicy garlic. The fried pickles were also awesome. Tv's everywhere, noise level was appropriate.

Hi, I usually don't like to complain but today was a very bad experience for our carry out order, we spent more than $50 for lunch for 2 people. The first issue was that we didn't get our Tater Tots, but got charged $4.50. Second we ordered fried pickles and paid $10.50 nd we did NOT get any dipping sauce, with out the sauce you cant enjoy your fried pickles. Third our celery sticks that came with our order of wings looked like it has been siting in the refrigerator for days and the ends had dirt on them. It's a shame that this restaurant seems that it doesn't care about their customers anymore. I definitely will not come frequent here again. It just takes a few seconds to look at what you are sending out of your kitchen and also to make sure customers actually get what you charge them for.

Google
The best wings, deep dish pizza, and beer in Indianapolis! P.S. I’ve tried every AE(they have several location in Indianapolis)and the BEST and most consistent is the Allisonville location. It’s the only one I would recommend.

Yelp
Food 10/10 Service 10/10 Ambiance 10/10 This is place has the absolute best chicken wings EVER! All the food here is great, good portions, fresh salads and tasty drinks. Love the vibe here when watching a game whether it's basketball, or football this is the place you want to be.

Yelp
When you pull up and the parking lot is full, you know the secret is out. I couldn't believe how packed it was on a Wednesday around 11:30. Having never been there before, we took it as a good sign. But we still got through in a decent time and the service was very prompt. They have a good selection of bar-type foods to choose from but I was here for the wings. The boneless wings were more like chicken tenders in size, but the chicken was good. It was very lightly battered and fried so a good low-er carb option, especially since I ate half a huge pretzel for an appetizer. I was a little confused by the wing sauces on the menu but I just requested the spiciest one which turned out to be the No Way sauce. I just need them to be listed from mildest to spiciest since that is how my brain works. My brother and I also liked the raspberry wasabi mustard that came with the pretzel. It was a...unique...texture but really delicious. Overall my biggest complaint was just that some of the napkins in the stack we were given were dirty, but I think that was just a casualty of trying to recycle unused napkins from another table.

Yelp
I love this place! I honestly didn't know what to think walking in. Ale Emporium is huge, lots of seating inside and out. We got a table inside next to the large opening glass wall. We got some wings and mozzarella sticks. The wings were hermazian and hermanaki. How cow were they ever awesome! We were debating which was our favorite for a quite a while. The mozzarella sticks were cooked well, and the pizza we got was a beast! Way more food than we could eat! The service was fantastic and the food was delicious too! I will gladly come back! Great food, great service, great location!

Yelp
The secret Tuesday night special is not really a secret. Went here to try out their insane bargain -- every Tuesday they have a special for $7.99 you get a bacon wrapped filet w/ your choice of baked potato or fries. If that's not tempting enough, this special also includes your choice of small soup & small salad or a large salad. Best to come early because after 6pm you risk getting there once they've run out. If you're lucky enough to land a spot at the bar, even better!

Yelp
Came in one Friday night for dinner and had a solid experience. Pros -Atmosphere was fun and lively -Food wasn't bad (fried pickles could have been crisper but not bad) -Size- The size of the place is enormous so plenty of room for a group of 2 or 22. Cons - Service- Service wasn't bad, but could have been better.

Yelp
If you are going to come to this place for March madness be sure to get here EARLY. That said, they do such a great job here. Have all the tvs autotuned to show the next game so you don't miss anything. It was pandemonium while I was here. Every table packed. Nowhere to park. And they still did a good job getting our food and drinks out to us.

Yelp
Is there a better spot in Indy to catch a game on TV?! I'm unaware of one better than Ale Emporium. There are TVs in every direction but you can still have a conversation with friends. They're known for their wings and almost everyone at our table had them incorporated into their meal. Mine on my salad or just wings tossed with different sauces. Their food is good! Nice selection of local beers to always give you a new, unique Untappd checkin. Service was good and it's easy to find just off 465. Great place to meet up with friends!

Yelp
We carried out from Ale Emporium Castleton this evening. During Covid they opened a drive thru and kept it open ever since. We ordered the snack size boneless hermanaki wings and the California grilled chicken salad to split. The hermanaki wings never disappoint and the salad was large enough for us to split and have some left over for tomorrow's lunch. Try the pizza someday - outstanding !! We probably hit up the Ale 2-3 times a month and always enjoy this dining experience.

Yelp
Hermanki boneless wings are so good !! My favorite wings to order as takeout or have in restaurant! It's so good and I haven't found anything else that compares. Make sure you get their homemade ranch !!!
google avatar

Bonnie L.

Yelp
Parking is @%/&£} Other than that. It's a good place for pizza! Staff was very polite and knowledgeable. The stuffed bread sticks are a MUST to order!! YUM!

Yelp
Went in for the first time. At first, I was having a good time. Until it was time to order. They wouldn't accommodate my wing order, and to get what I wanted, I had to buy two orders of wings. Unacceptable. I also got the Stromboli. the menu said the sandwiches come with fries, and for an extra charge, you can get soup, or tater tots, etc. So I stuck with the fries. I also asked for a ranch, which is a pretty normal request from me. Everything was normal until the receipt came. They charged me for fries, and for every ranch cup I got. I have never been charged for a ranch cup before. This is unheard of. I would have never gotten the fries if I knew I'd be charged for them. If I knew it would be an automatic charge, I would have gotten a better option, like tater tot's. This check was ridiculous. Completely ruined my experience. I left mad and astounded. I will never be back.

Yelp
Ale Emporium will always be one of our top favorites! Whether you're looking to hang out with friends, catch a game, or enjoy a date night, there's something for everyone. The space is massive--you don't even realize there's an entire other side! You can count on them showing every game imaginable. The Hermanaki Traditional wings are amazing and packed with flavor; they really live up to their "world-famous" claim! I also tried the new Naki Burger today, which comes with Hermanaki sauce, pepper jack cheese, and pineapple--absolutely delicious! The fried pickles are some of the best I've ever had, practically melting in your mouth. Ace Pineapple is one of my favorite ciders which isn't offered at many restaurants, but you bet they have it here! While Ale Emporium is always bustling, the service is always on point. If you haven't been, it's a must-visit! We can't wait for our next trip.

Yelp
Visited Ale Emporium with coworkers recently and we were able to push some tables together to accommodate all of us. Everyone mentioned that the pizza and wings were great at this restaurant, so I requested some wings and a beer. A while later, our food was delivered. The Hermaican wings were incredible. I liked them a little more than the Hermanaki wings. They had an amazing dry rub on them and they were cooked to perfection. Perfect! Next time I'm in Indy, I'm definitely visiting this place. Service was excellent.

Yelp
This is a great dive/sports bar to come for sports, wings, and beer. There's an outdoor area that's large and spacious for bigger groups, though note it's likely you'll get whiffs of secondhand smoke sitting in this area from patrons taking a puff break near the entrance. Service was great and waitress was great at making suggestions and allowing us to try samples of the wing sauces. The wings are fried well and are nice and meaty - as wings should be! The bread on the panini was also excellent, though I found the flavor of the ale panini pretty tame. Burger was solid, and chips are homemade. Would definitely come again!
google avatar

Yelp
I had the wings and deep dish pizza. It was good. The pizza was definitely cheesy and the wings were nice size. An 8 out of 10 on quality for the pizza and wings. They have an outdoor patio with a huge fan with water raining out to keep everyone cool when it's hot outside . Staff were friendly but our waitress kind of took awhile to get to us, but she was very friendly. Inside atmosphere looked amazing as well.
google avatar

Patricia N.

Yelp
They have the best wings! I had mine Hermanaki style wings. They also have a really good deep dish pan pizza with very cheesy mozzarella topping! Worth the wait!!
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
Hello!!! The newly renovated add on section is so pretty! It definitely is an upgrade and so many more tables available. We love the wings and we have yet to be disappointed in them. Herman style always for me. We also tried the bacon wrapped jalapenos which I didn't try but my husband said they were really good. We've always loved the vibe here.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
This is my happy place! They have the best wings in the nation. The pizza reminds me of Bronko's (IYKUK). Great atmosphere and staff are second to none. Great place to watch all sports.
google avatar

Marissa K.

Yelp
Quick seating and great atmosphere. I can see why this would be a popular place on game night. Our server was extremely nice but did take a while to assist us. At the end she forgot we needed to pay and we were left waiting 20 minutes for her to collect our card. We got traditional wings w/ teriyaki garlic & cauliflower bites with hermanaki sauce. The wings were big and flavorful, a great standard wing. The cauliflower bites were the best I've had from a restaurant. And the sauce is a must! Definitely will be going back.

Yelp
Ale emporium lives up to all the hype. This was my first visit and I made it a point to order their star dishes- Hermaican Wings, and a pan pizza with pepperoni and smoked Gouda cheese. The wings were flavorful without being messy, the chicken itself cooked well & of good quality. The pizza was good..different! They called it a pan pizza, but it arrived looking kind of like a deep dish... I was pleasantly surprised that it was not full of marina sauce like a deep dish would be, but instead, filled to the top with the toppings I ordered ( pep & smoked Gouda) and the crust tasted like it had hints of beer... really good and filling & something I would definitely order again. The environment was like any sports bar, busy, buzzy, with TVs everywhere and an incredible draft menu. Our service was friendly and prompt despite how busy it was, and it's def worth a visit :)
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
Ordered pizza and wings from Ale Emporium so I could chill and enjoy the Super Bowl. The Hermanaki wings were so good- not sure there are better wings in the area. I could not say the same about the deep dish Margherita Pizza. The crust was good. The cheese was on point. The only issue was there was absolutely no red sauce to complement the cheese and crust. Wings were 10 out of 10. The pizza was 6 out of 10. I ate two pieces wishing it had sauce. Not sure I will give them a second chance on the pizza unless I order a side of red sauce.

Yelp
Came here on a whim and enjoyed ourselves! It's very spacious here...there's an outdoor patio area, a more family restaurant side w/ bar, and then a separate bar side complete with a stage! We sat on the bar side and we got there just in time as the live band was just starting up! There's huge tv screens everywhere and they had on every college football game which was a huge plus! You seat yourself, but it didn't take long at all to get service! Our server, Michelle, was top tier! She recommended the Supreme pizza and Hermanaki wings tossed in Spicy BBQ! Her recommendation was spot on! The pizza and wings were phenomenal! The pizza is piled with toppings and so cheesy! The wings were so flavorful and saucy and a nice size! For drinks, my husband ordered Jack and Coke and I tried the Blake's Triple Jam Berry Cider! Both were great! Great time here and am excited to come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Went here to celebrate my birthday with family and I was not disappointed! We ordered the hand tossed pizza which had a soft yet crispy crust that was easy to chew and the sauce and cheese covered in their sausage was a great choice for sharing! We also had the Naki burger and the pineapple on it was a nice touch! The tater tots that came with the burger were soo good! Like they fell apart in your mouth creating a great mouth feel it was bliss! The steak machines were delicious with the generous amount of toppings they came with. All it needed was a little more steak on it. To round it out we had the mild buffalo wings which were as you would expect flavor wise with plenty of meat on them too! We also got the spicy garlic wings they were good but it was all spice and oil the garlic flavor didn't stand out at all to us. This is a great local place to go! It is loud and there is a lot going on with tv's everywhere! Support local try it out!
google avatar

Courtny M.

Yelp
Hidden Gem! I've heard they have the best wings in town. They were good and fresh. Might have been better with the sauce but we were unable to try two flavors of wings on one order. We ordered a 12 piece and could only get 1 flavor or the sauce on the side. That's a first. I'm not sure why tossing half and half is not an option. That was a little disappointing. The sampler was bomb. The potato skins were great! The pickles were okay but the chicken strips were good as well. They have drink specials and nice seating outside. Great place for date night
google avatar

Macy J.

Yelp
Ordered takeout on wings the other night and they were fantastic, different then your usual wings as they fry and grill them if you prefer I did get both fried and grilled and the hermanaki style - they're a tad sweet, spicy and the perfect saltiness they were cooked perfectly, crispy but still juicy and meaty in the inside. Also bonus points for big wings but they still weren't gummy or gross with how big they were I dislike HUGE wings because they don't seem to get cooked right in the inside but these were they were perfect. With us ordering pickup they gave us a time which was about 45 mins, for wings we thought okay that's a good time we go to pick them up about 10 mins before the time they gave us they said pull in a parking spot, we did - and did not receive our order for another 40 minutes so at least half an hour after the estimated time that gave so maybe take the estimated time with a grain of salt as it was incorrect. The ranch was also very good and reminded me sorta of the ccf it was thick and very flavorful if you're looking for a different wing then your clsssuc buffalo I'd give these a try :)

glenn ..

Yelp
Always the best food available when drive throughs are the only alternative. Not much more to say, that's their niche and they fill it. It's a bar and grill that's always exactly OK. And open.
google avatar

Megan F.

Yelp
The Ale Emporium is another staple restaurant in Indianapolis. This place is always packed. You can seat yourself and although the parking lot is always packed, you can usually find a place to sit easily. I love their wings, which they are known for but they have a large menu if wings are not your thing. The pizza and Stromboli's are always a popular choice too. I love their soft pretzel with the variety of dipping sauces offered. They have a great beer list and specials throughout the week. Service can be hit or miss, but the food is always top notch. They have tons of TVs and it's a great place to watch a game.
google avatar

Courtney H.

Yelp
Wow. So many TVs! Want to watch a game? I don't think there is a better place than this. They have a large beer/cider menu and some unique menu items. We got the Ale emporium pretzel pickle chips and they were great! Maybe some of my favorite fried pickles I have ever had. The pretzels taste really comes through! We then got the Hermanki Wings and the White Stromboli. The hermanki wings were great! They are much larger than I thought they would be. They are basically mini chicken tenders. The white Stromboli was also good. I just wish it had more sauce . Service was just okay. A little slow.
google avatar

Saba K.

Yelp
Across the street from the mall, in a strip but with plenty of parking. Always get the ale sandwich, Hermanaki wings, and salad. The ale sandwich is a favorite! Even though they were busy my server did well on checking on us and getting what we needed. May not look like it on the outside but it's huge inside with a whole other side so plenty of seating.

Jay H.

Yelp
Horrible customer service stood there for 29 min. Never spoke to anyone. Do better Ale Emporium.
google avatar

Noelle M.

Yelp
I showed up after looking up something highly rated in the area (and saw a few recommendations about the wings around for this place as well). Every Alta cocker in the area was here tonight! The people next to me told me it was because they run a secret $7.99 filet deal every Tuesday. Needless to say, it was crazy trying to find a table (seat yourself-style, absolutely anxiety inducing with the crowd, lol). The server did well considering how busy! I got wings and sweet potato fries which hit the spot--they even have an option to get the wings grilled which I thought was cool. The overall experience wasn't worth writing home about except for how odd the Tuesday night vibe is...
google avatar

Jared M.

Yelp
First time coming to this location but definitely seemed bigger once you walk in. Very spacious bar vibe. Many tvs for sports viewing, area for live music, lots of tables. Food was good and they have GF options (wings, GF bun for sandwich, and 10" GF pizza). Ordered a GF pizza with chicken, green pepper and pineapple. Was very good. Tried the hermanaki and hermaican wings, both good! They have a huge drink menu. I got the country boy orange cream cider (6.8%). Was very good! Would have got a 2nd but had plans afterwards! I would definitely go back!
google avatar

Krista B.

Yelp
There are two things you need to know about Ale Emporium: 1) Hermanaki wings. They're delicious, they're meaty, and you should always go bone-in over boneless. 2) Tuesday night steak special. It's only $6.99 for a 6oz bacon-wrapped filet, soup, salad, and potato/fries. You can opt to get one larger soup or salad rather than the combo if you like. Only available at the Castleton location, and it's absolutely the best budget deal in Indianapolis. Service is usually pretty good; expect them to be busy regardless of what night you go. Lots of TVs to watch whatever sport you desire.
google avatar

Lin LiAnn W.

Yelp
Consistently tasty bar food here. The wings are always amazing. Tried the stuffed breadsticks for the first time and they were delicious. Crisp in the outside and oozing with a ton of mozzarella.
google avatar

Beth E.

Yelp
Every time we are in the area we make certain to stop at Ale Emporium. Sometimes we eat there more than once during our stay because we enjoy so many items on the menu. Their chicken feather wings with the Hermanki sauce is the first thing we get. The next visit we usually order a pizza and salad. Their pizzas are DELISH!!! It's fun to go when the weather is nice, sit on the patio, and enjoy the music.
google avatar

Mike A.

Yelp
Popped in for wings and a couple of beers with a friend. It was Sunday during foozball season AND the Colts were on so it was LOUD!!! We had the Hermanaki wings which I will highly recommend. Waitress was very friendly and did a good job checking on us and brought extra napkins and wipes (we were messy) plus a bowl to put the bones in.
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
We decided to stop here after running some errands on a Sunday evening. They were pretty busy due to it being the evening after a Colts game but we were able to be seated right away. Our waiter was fast and very personable. The food was good and fresh. I would recommend and would return. This is a sports bar type of restaurant with TVs everywhere and many tables as well as outdoor seating.
google avatar

Dani J.

Yelp
I finally made it here after constantly hearing about the wings. It was pretty busy during my visit, but we had no wait to be seated. Plenty of mounted TVs tuned into different sports games. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. I ended up ordering the hermanaki wings that have been recommended to me several times. For an appetizer we had the Ale Sampler. It was pretzel crusted pickles, potato skins, and chicken fingers. I also tried some BBQ pizza that was pretty tasty. I enjoyed the wings along with the other food. I'd say it was pretty good bar food. The bartender didn't skimp on My Long Island Iced Tea as well. Highly recommend for a night out with the girls or guys especially if you're into sports.
google avatar

Rodney R.

Yelp
I've been eating at this location since the early 90s and still love the atmosphere and most of the food. But slowly the quality has gotten worse. First it was the sausage on the pizzas then it was the chicken on the nachos and now it's the mushrooms on the pizza. Went from fresh cut slices to canned button mushrooms cut in half. I'll still occasionally visit this establishment, but now I'll have to be careful on what I order.
google avatar

Eric T.

Yelp
What a great , local, FAMILY OWNED restaurant!!!!. We visit relatively often, but not often enough. They have soups of the day that are made in house and very delicious!!, our favorites are the loaded potato and broccoli n cheddar. The Castleton location has 2 different full service bars and is 21 and over only. The Greenwood location is great, very spacious and ALL AGES!! I believe all locations have live music occasionally. The food is wonderful, much better than typical deep fried "bar food"!
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
A roadside stop turned into a pleasant meal for me and my fiancé. Super friendly and fast service, despite the joint being packed to the gills on a gameday. It's casual Midwestern sports bar fare, but with a far-reaching menu that can handle most palates and preferences. I was pleased with the gluten free choices, and ended up with a gf pizza.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming since the day I moved to Indy! My husband and I find ourselves at Ale instead of trying new restaurants because we crave Ale. I can say for certain that the boneless wings, their sauces, and the ranch/bleu cheese are the best I've ever had. There no filler in the boneless wings it's just strips of chicken breast. I love the hermanaki and the hermasian and I order both ranch and bleu cheese on the side. My husband gets their deep dish pizza and it is satisfying every single time. He's named it the best pizza outside his native Chicago! The food is 5 stars no question. The service is quick but not personal. I get it they are so busy because the food is so good and the atmosphere is great! Maybe the servers need smaller sections because we often sit with empty drinks and look for our server. Without a doubt won't stop me from coming back. I've never ventured outside my boneless wings and deep dish pizza because they never disappoint!

Morbin T.

Yelp
The woman handling takeout orders will just hang up on you and give you attitude. Amazing food, but questionable training and management
google avatar

Sable S.

Yelp
Really love Ale Emporium (the original location in Castleton)! The wings (boneless) are by far the best in central Indiana (in my opinion)! Great quality meat, perfectly seasoned and grilled! Fun atmosphere, huge dining areas, the most sports coverage around, huge and varied craft beer choices from all over Indiana & beyond. And of course, delicious food. Our server tonight, Micah, was the best we've had in quite some time! Want something fast to go, they now feature a permanent to-go drive up window for wings anytime you like (which we often use for pickup as well)!! This place is hopping most nights, especially with games, so it can get quite busy. But well worth the visit!!
google avatar

Bonnie L.

Yelp
Parking can be tricky if you wait until dinner time! Plan accordingly! We did not have to wait to be seated and the place was pretty busy. I would definitely come back as the pizza was so yummy and filling and CHEESY! A very good dinner! Hot and fresh! Thank you!!

Yelp
I was in the area while my mom was visiting from out of town. She requested a quality salad for lunch, and I was craving some American food. I searched Yelp for suggestions and this place won our business yesterday! I have been to another location before so I knew what the food was like, but it's been a few years so I didn't remembered completely. We sat ourselves and noticed how busy it was for lunch on a Wednesday. I am assuming it's a popular lunch break spot for workers in the area. It has more of a bar feel than the other location I went to, and this one you must be 21+ to even sit. I asked our high energy server what he recommended, and he said they were known for their wings. I definitely had wings last time I came, and I remembered being happy with them! The entire menu looked REALLY good. I was tempted by the potato skins especially after seeing someone at a nearby table eating them, but I thought it would be too heavy. I ordered the snack size wings with the Wild sauce and a side salad (ranch for both!) My mom ordered the California Grilled Chicken Salad. She had Starry to drink and I had a Diet Pepsi. The wait wasn't too long despite them being busy. Everything came out looking really good! I immediately tried my wings. I was really happy with the texture, taste, and heat of the wings, but I will admit they were a bit cold when they got to me. I still ate them up!! My mom said she LOVED her salad. She said it was a great value with the amount of chicken and avocado they give. She said she only wished they had a spicy salad dressing. Overall, our server did a great job! The vibe of the restaurant was good if you're into a bar vibe. It's not my personal favorite, but that won't stop me from going back because I did really enjoy the food!

Yelp
I'm not sure what happened to this place but the service is terrible. My boyfriend and sat at the bar, looked at by one of the bartenders and he walked away to never return. The one female bartender did notice us and waited on us immediately, she's always great but clearly busy. The male bartender returns and asks if we'd like to put a food order in, we said yes and he walks away and continues to pour drinks to never return. We left and went to King Jugg which is always amazing and most likely won't be back. PSA: wings are way better at KG anyway ;)

Yelp
One of the best deep-dish pizzas and Hermanaki wings are fantastic. Service is good when not crowded. Horrible when they are. Ambiance. Great sports bar tons of TV's too!

Yelp
Went for a late Friday lunch with a small group (5) and initially it was very crowded but it slowed down after a while. Our serve was very attentive and was always checking on us frequently. The wings were excellent. Hermanaki and Hermaican wings were taste, juicy and flavorful. Will definitely try it again.
