Ale Industries was founded in 2009 in Concord, but in 2013 they moved to a vacant warehouse in Oakland within walking distance of the infamous Fruitvale BART Station. Seems like the rare thing to do nowadays since everyone seems to be moving out of Oakland instead of investing in it (e.g. Raiders to Las Vegas, Warriors to San Francisco).
Regardless, it turned out to be a good thing for me since I live on the east side of the Caldecott Tunnel, and had they stayed in Concord, I'd have an even bigger beer belly. Also, being in Oakland, the tasting room is a lot cooler during the summer months... and with the partners of Linden Street Brewery breaking up, Ale Industries (AI) is officially the oldest brewery in Oakland!
Stopped by AI on Independence Day because the wife, the furchild, and I were dropping off a friend and fellow Yelper, Steph H. from the LBC, at Oakland International Airport. The cool thing is that AI's marketing director, Joseph, is really savvy with this thing called the Internet and had even updated the hours for the 4th of July by opening the brewery from 10 AM to 2 PM so we knew they were open! None of that nonsense of "it's a holiday, call the business to see if they're open" bullshit.
We showed up at 10:15 AM for some breakfast beers and were met by Aristotle, the friendly rescue pitbull that greeted us like he was the B0$$. Did you know, Aristotle used to run along East 10th Street before he was rescued by the nearby Oakland Animal Services and ended up being adopted by the brewery? Anyways, wise Aristotle philosophied us into getting tasters of pretty much all their beers as well as a couple pints. In fact, he even yelped as us that they have a Yelp check-in deal where the first pint is $1. Such a smart dog.
The great thing about AI is that they have a wide array of beers that can probably please just about anyone. And, unlike every-other-craft-boring-brewery, AI stays away from hoppy IPAs as if they have an IPA-intolerant allergy. In fact, the only IPA they sell, the East Bay IPA (7.75%) came about as a joke gone wrong. The crazy thing? If this is how they joke, they ain't no freaking joke. Damn solid IPA.
Their Cherry Kush (4.4%) is an easy going beer that is basically their Golden State of Mind (kind of like a Hoegaarden) blended with organic cherry juice. Tasty and tart, I just wished it was stronger!
The Fruitvale Grind (4.2%) is another light beer that uses coffee from Red Bay Coffee located adjacent to the brewery. This beer almost tasted like a nice lightly-roasted iced coffee. Again, wished it was stronger (see a trend here?).
I really liked their Nine Lives Porter (6.9%) because it was one of their stronger beers and because it's named after one of the two rescue brewery cats, Porter! The other rescue cat is Amber. I'm sure a beer named after Amber is in the works... probably an Amber Ale? We actually got to see both of them pop their heads up to annoy our furchild Charlie before disappearing like ninjas.
On tap that day were two ciders. There was the Straight-Up Oakland by Crooked City Cider (6.9%) that was a dry cider that was pretty good. But I really enjoyed the Panama Jones (10.3%) Cider, a cider from Mission Trail that had apple and fruity notes that were quite tropical. And at 10.3%, it was the most bang-for-the-gut hehehe.
Speaking of Mission Trail, they do a seasonal collaboration with AI called the Protect Ya Nectarine. Can't wait to try this sour beer since, oh ALE yes, we will be back. Also, can't wait to try some of their other seasonal beers like the Pink Drank sour and the Weisse Edict white ale aged with cinnamon in whiskey barrels.
So, on top of being BYOD (bring your own dog) and BYOF (bring your own food), they do all kinds of awesome community stuff such as pet adoptions and other charitable events. Over all, just an all-around great brewery.
* AI used to own and operate The Pig & The Pickle off that stupid boomerang of a street in Concord with a million names. You know, the one that starts off as Concord Avenue, then becomes Galindo Street for like 5 blocks, and then becomes Monument Boulevard. City Planning at its finest. Crap, totally off-topic...
So yes, The Pig & The Pickle was an awesome gastropub that was a bit ahead of its time. Serving all kinds of interesting fare that included duck fat fries to tater tot nachos, kangaroo to camel, they closed in December of 2015. RIP. I pour a Cherry Kush down my throat in your memory.
