Where to Find Latin American Favorites in Portland and Beyond
"Alecocina at the Portland Mercado is one of two local Argentine food carts (Abuela Chona in Beaverton’s BG Food Cartel is the other). There’s no better representation of the Italian influence on Argentina’s cuisine than the milenesa, steak (or chicken) pounded thin, breaded and fried, and served simply with fries or Napolitana-style, slathered with tomato sauce and topped with melted cheese and herbs. For something more portable, try a classic choripan, chorizo and chimichurri stuffed into a French roll or a dulce de leche-filled alfajor." - Krista Garcia
Where to Find Excellent Empanadas Across the Portland Area - Eater Portland
"This Argentinian food cart is located in the open-air Portland Mercado, serving a number of filled empanadas, stuffed with vegetables, shredded chicken, and herbs. Still, the restaurant’s beef empanada is the move: Wrapped in a baked wheat crust, the filling’s briny olives are perked up with red bell peppers and onions, all tossed with seared ground beef, eggs and onion. The empanada is available for takeout, but outdoor seating at the Mercado is available." - Maya MacEvoy
Empanadas de pina (beef) and chicken are so delicious! You can have them fried or baked. I prefer baked. The alfajores brought me back to my days teaching abroad. Delicious food and really nice staff!
