The Boston Area’s Best Falafel, Shawarma, and Kebabs | Eater Boston

"A number of Middle Eastern establishments have previously occupied the notorious white brick building in Cambridge’s Central Square; now the distinctive castle-shaped spot is home to Aleppo Palace. This Syrian restaurant offers some of the area’s best sandwiches stuffed in warm singular pitas. At around six inches in diameter, the pita bread is toasted crispy on the outside but soft and doughy in the middle: Think of it as an Arabic arepa. Try the lamb and beef shawarma pita in particular, in which the juicy meat is spiced well and embellished with some crunchy bits from the vertical rotisserie spit. Note: All of the meat served at Aleppo Palace is halal. Aleppo Palace currently offers curbside pickup (direct ordering) and delivery (Caviar, Grubhub)."

Moody’s Falafel Palace Has Reopened as Aleppo Palace in Central Square - Eater Boston

"Aleppo Palace, formerly known as Moody’s Falafel Palace, has reopened after a major renovation. Owned and operated by MK Seffo since the 1990s, the restaurant now reflects Seffo's personal history and love for traditional ingredients from his ancestry and culture. The restaurant offers a variety of Syrian and Mediterranean-inspired dishes and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m." - Terrence Doyle

Only ice cream here now. They sell Giffords ice cream at a good price. Only one sample though which is unfortunate and they charge if you want a cone or anything. But otherwise great close ice cream shop!

Went for 1st time this week. I had the chicken shawarma. Very good! Everything was extremely fresh & the pita was perfect. Garlic sauce is awesome! Only thing I can say is the portion could've been slightly bigger for the price. The woman working was very nice too. I'll be back on a regular basis, highly recommend.

Google
Party of 2 sep2033: The place is small most seating is outside. Had a friendly experience with service. The food was pretty standard and crispy hues, the pita bread was nice and warm would of liked some feta cheese but thats just a preference. They had a nice selection of Indian pastries, drinks like mango lassi which is my favorite. Anywho the food had many textures with hummus and veggie options.

2 scoops of tasty Maine dairy ice cream for $4.50 — beat that! I love these no-frills places.

My experience was super amazing. It's such super important to mention that Malcom Jamal- Warner died today, he was on The Cosby Show. So it was on my heart being a fan of The Cosby Show when I walked into Chateau Blanc Cafe. So I walked in with my friend Mina and we started to play along with the clerk who's name guess what....Theo....The name of the character that Malcom Jamal-Warner played on The Cosby Show... Huxtable the last name....and the first name..... Theo. The clerks name was Theo! I truly believe that Malcolm was in that moment with me. Theo, the clerk was super fun, interactive, super giving with the samples and a nice treat for my friend Mina. This is hospitality. Thank you Theo and thank you truly Malcolm.....Theo.... To the owner, I'm Lebanese. I never had your falafel at Allepo before you changed to Chateau Blanc Cafe. I'll return and say hi one day in the future. And of course, can't forget to mention the most beautiful piece of architecture in the city.

Google
This place has extremely delicious falafel pita 🥙 sandwiches. When I pass by this store I love to even smell the falafel sandwich. The staff are very nice and helpful. I also have had lamb and beef pita sandwich here and it was good too. They have also a bunch of bakery options available in the storefront. The orders get ready very fast. This place has no dine-in but is located very conveniently in central Sq.

Google
"Expensive, gross-tasting food prepared in unsanitary conditions" I'd heard mostly good things about Aleppo Palace's shwarma, but the dinner I purchased tonight was inedible! Chickpea salad/balela was BATHED IN RAW ONION (see pics) and vinegar; chicken was pink inside and had an odd texture/smell to it, despite its overall bland flavor; gagged on hummus so acidic that it smelled and tasted rancid; the last straw for me was when I spat out a short, dark human hair from a bite of the lentil rice! (Nasty!) Took a couple pictures for this review and threw everything away, it was so gross. Also, regarding sanitation: Didn't touch the pita bread I was given since it was handled "raw" by a GLOVELESS cashier who alternated osculating money/cards at the register with touching food -- no, he did not wash or sanitize his hands first. (EW!) Ample kitchen staff did not wear masks or hair restraints of any kind such as a hat, hairnet, or bandana; nor did they ask patrons to wait outside despite a group of 12+ bar-flies entering all at once into the small waiting area (3' x 4'-ish) at "bodies touching" proximity. Seemed like the perfect breeding ground for foodborne illness and COVID/flu... ...Needless to say, I am disappointed and disgusted by this experience, all around. NEVER AGAIN!

Google
Passing though Cambridge and had heard some good things about Aleppos Palace. Stopped in and got a falafel verde platter and lentil soup. The owner was incredibly kind and welcoming, instructing the cook to give us some extra things to try in the platter as well as two delicious pistachio/tahini desserts. If I lived here id probably be there twice a week. That’s some old school class a customer service you don’t find just anywhere.

Yelp
This place is INCREDIBLE. Tiny store off the side of a busy road, with one of the best falafels I have ever had, and some of the kindest people working there. Prices are also excellent. I are my falafel wrap too quickly to be able to take a photo (it really is that good). Haven't tried any of the meat options but judging by the falafel wrap I have zero doubt it's incredible. I was slightly less impressed by the lentil soup but may have had it on an off day. They also have a selection of desserts including baklava. Not a ton of space to sit inside (I think maybe like one seat even?) so definitely a place that you go to grab to go. But 100% worth it and service is quick.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times . On the last occasion I got gastroenteritis. I was extremely ill for two days. The young men who cook have no idea how to make felafel. My food was undercooked.

Yelp
Temporarily Closed for renovations, but long time customer. I'll update this review if things change when they open. New owner took over about a year and a half ago. Most things stayed the same but dear god do I miss the old bread they used to make there. A slightly crusted pocket, fluffy, warm, absorbed the sauce beautifully, and didn't break apart as much when you ate it. Different style of sandwich that the new owner didn't like I guess and now they use cheap store bought pita roasted over a flame. Otherwise, the falafel is usually good, the portions are solid (they should be given the highish price) and the meat/sides/desserts have always been good when I've gone. Greens have occasionally been swapped with lettuce and produce quality is just not what it once was. Just wish the bread and the overall quality and consistency were what they once were before the ownership change. Put a little more care in during reopening and I'm certain y'all can bring it back. And I work around the corner, I've been going for years!

Yelp
First time in after driving by for months. The guy working the counter was great. But that Shawarma. Holy smokes. That is some mighty fine Shawarma. Highly recommend. The place will not impress by its outside appearance. It will not impress by its inside appearance. But it is clean and kicking out mighty fine Shawarma. Get you some.

Yelp
Ordered a chicken shawarama, lamb and beef shawarma, 2 side tahini, 2 side garlic sauce, and 1 side hot sauce. I like to try each part separately. Heres the breakdown: - the lamb and beef meat on its own was not that flavorful, but still tender. - the chicken on its own had slightly more flavor than the beef and Lamb, but not by much. At least it was very tender, juicy so between the two I would get the chicken. - tabouli: either too salty or too lemony, couldnt tell. When added to the shawarma the rest of the ingredients cut down the salty/lemony ness. So would recommend doing that instead od eating on its own. - tahini: Tahini is not hard to make on its own. But I dont know why some places water down tahini so much. Dissappointing, this place should improve it. - hot sauce: this is my favorite kind where its not vinegar base. I can taste the red chili pepper used in it on its own, great addition to the shawarmas! - side garlic sauce: standard garlic aioli, very good, not overly potent. - the rest of veggie filings in shawarma: very fresh, good flavors. Can taste the herbs and mint in it, cucumbers and tomatoes were well diced. Combine it all and you got good items with the shawarma. Overall the other reviews werent wrong that the meats dont have much flavor, but everything else used with the meat, I think thats the point the meat should not overpower the veggies, and this place does well in doing that.

Yelp
The best thing about this place is that it stays open late (2:30 or 3am) on Thu-Sat nights, if you are out partying in Central Square and get the munchies and don't want to suffer the gross convenience store overpriced food at the 7-11 down the street that's been sitting under a heat lamp for days. Instead, you can get relatively decent Middle Eastern (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Saudi Arabia, etc. it's all about 80% similar) grub here...but equally overpriced as 7-11, by which I mean you pay about the same inflated prices you'd pay in a bloody airport. The staff are nice, the food is not bad, and if you have had enough to drink/smoke previously, you probably won't even notice the overpricing. If they had more reasonable pricing, I'd give them 4 stars.

Yelp
Great place for late night food in Central Square! There was a pretty long line, but it moved fast. The food itself was great and satisfied my craving for a meaty dish. I also tried the pistachio halawa and it was delicious. I would recommend.

Yelp
Was the only person in the restaurant ordering and the person got my order wrong! Wanted falafel plate and I even said the first platter and when I got home I found chicken shawarma. Super large plate full of soggy salads, mushy tasteless lentil rice, dry chicken shawarma that had no personality. If you can't even get the order right, don't even bother taking the order. If they were out of falafel they should have just said so. A day later I go to Sam's Falafel and Shawarma in Somerville, the place had a line to the outside, within the 15 min wait there were almost 50 people who put in an order and got their orders right. I even got to eat my falafel at last. I would've ordered the chicken So much given they had it on the turning vertical rotisserie which would have guaranteed a moist juicy sandwich but I was craving falafel!

Yelp
I've seen this place in central square. During covid, they're doing takeout and you can also order via UberEats. I had seen lineups so I was pretty excited to order from here. I got the Classic Falafel Pita ($10.99) as the reviews for the falafel were by far the best. They don't do wraps but you get the sandwich in the full pita. I also ordered some Mamouls and Namoura ($3.49 each). When I got the pita, I couldn't really see any falafel in it like the photos had. But I could see the pickles and salad. The falafels were already pressed in. Not going to lie, this is probably the best pita I have had in the area! The desserts were also very tasty. Overall, taste wise this small place is a gem. It is a little overpriced for what you get.

C L.

Yelp
Under new ownership. Falafel is a fine art and the new recipe is no art. It was like biting into cardboard. And they didn't have the normal toppings for a classic falafel sandwich. You can't just put whatever salad you want on falafel. There's a whole assembly. The bread wasn't the classic pocket pita but a large flat pita which they rolled as if it was a shawarma (smh). The bread was actually rubbery. It was so bad that I didn't eat my sandwich despite being terribly hungry. I actually threw it away. I'm so sad that the old owners and old falafel are gone. Also the service was painfully slow but I didn't mind because the guys working there were super nice.

Yelp
Food is good. I ordered in advance online but they still didn't start making it until I arrived at the window. That said, it was made very quickly. There is currently no seating, just a window to order and takeout from. Food is your standard middle eastern options but pretty good quality for the (low) price. Nice for fast, cheap, casual takeout!

Madison R.

Yelp
Great food and service. Ownership is kind and passionate about their business. Highly recommend the mr Aleppo platter and baba ghanoush. 10/10.
google avatar

Shaarif Z.

Yelp
Food is not authentic Syrian. I took the shawarma and they gave me chicken stew which smelled like raw chicken.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummmm. Wish I knew about this late night spot when I lived here! Stopped by on a Saturday night around midnight, and I was happy the line went quickly. The gryro spot makes everything to order, and despite the rush staff are friendly and helpful. I ordered the falafel. The falafel tasted as though it was made from scratch but it was a bit too dry/chalky on the inside. Their toppings and tahini were delicious but not enough to overcome. Everyone else enjoyed their mixed meats gyros.

Yelp
Aleppo palace food is always good and fresh. They are a small place but do a great job with takeout!

Yelp
I'm a major fan of falafel. Good falafel, great falafel, falafel in all it's variations. This little place serves up an an A+ falafel. I'm back in Central Sq for a week after decades away, and being Vegan, always on the lookout for good, healthy veg options. Just had a falafel from Aleppo Palace. Wow! I chose it with the roasted eggplant after hemming and hawing over competing versions including one w/ zataar and another with foul (beans). I always nibble on one of the falafels alone first to see how they stand-up alone (and cause I lack the control to wait..). Another wow. The falafels stood up by themselves- flavorful and not too oily. On other fronts- the pita was good, the garnishes of fresh salad (arugula, really, at a street food establishment?) the pickles were good- tahini check- eggplant salad double check- everything was good. Plus, plus...in addition to great , also fast and cheap. $7 for this perfect sandwich- $10 including tax and tip and ready in 5 mins. If I lived here, I'd be here once a week.

Yelp
I really, really wanted to like this place. But I think I will stick to my spot in Winter Hill. The rice and the cucumber salad here were pretty much tasteless and were the bulk of my platter. The hummus and tabouli were probably the best part. The falafel was very lackluster. Hit or miss items that cost a ton relative to other places that taste better. I'm happy to pay more but there has to be a reason.

A W.

Yelp
The food is absolutely disgusting. The shawarma tasted horrible and the place didn't look clean. This is not an authentic middle eastern food, try it at your own risk

Mike R.

Yelp
NEVER again **********no Tahini included with the falafel not satisfied******* it's advertised on the website. plenty of other places that are higher quality. No fork no napkins included, I will AVOID at all costs, here in Newton we have many other quality, reliable, reputable choices. Before you start charging $15 with tax TINY falafel BITES Overpriced without Tahini- Think TWICE not to CHEAT consumers!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Aleppo Palace is my go to stop whenever I'm in a hurry and need something delicious, healthy, and reliable. I've gotten both of their falafel wraps and their plates and I've got to say they were both so delicious I craved them until I could get some again. The owners and workers are really sweet and they give you a warm homey feeling while you wait.

Bao P.

Yelp
Was there last Wednesday April 26, 2023. The foods is no longer as it was, it is NOT middle east anymore. Foods was left over, it's no longer authentic with this kind of new owner.
google avatar

Jared W.

Yelp
Cashier couldn't wait to take my money and kept asking me to pay before my pita was even toasted - I was the only customer there. Food was on the bland side but not unpalatable. I asked if there was anywhere she recommended to sit nearby (I knew there was no seating before arriving) and the cashier smirked and said "Starbucks." Honestly I think I'm just spoiled by good Mediterranean food in New York, but usually the food I have in Boston is excellent and this was just mediocre. 2.5/5 rounded up to 3 because I'm more generous than they are with their shawarma portion.
google avatar

Jenny R.

Yelp
The service is unmatched. The staff truly cares about your experience. The food is absolutely beautiful and tasty. I an so fortunate to have this place just a few minutes away from home. The shawarma lamb, beef or chicken always delicious especially when you add garlic and hot sauce. The lentil soup, chef's kiss and always that tasty walnut baklava I've been going here for years and years and they never disappoint me. Not to mention they stay open super late so you get a tasty tasty healthy snacks on those nights you drink too much or those nights you work too hard. Yeah now that I think of it it is a local favorite place in mines And I always recommend it.

Hector M.

Yelp
Food was spiced and delicous. Plates were generously portioned. We sat at the bar, the only seating option.

John C.

Yelp
Found a live bug in my Falafel pita. I will be careful about ordering food from here. Especially if it's the end of the day
google avatar

Christophe R.

Yelp
I ordered one BoY for delivery. Positive: Quality is ok and delivery time was reasonable. Negative: - overall price/quality is definitely not competitive (this is not a Michelin star restaurant to justify the price..). Well above market price given 1) quality and 2) portion of food... - Some items on the menu (e.g., hummus avocado) are surprising (not typical in Middle Eastern countries) but do not add value taste wise My recommendation to the owner: find levers to reduce service fees for delivery and bring your price to more reasonable ranges in line with the current positioning of your place. Adapt your menu if needed: more simple to reduce costs.
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
This place is quite small so plan on taking it to go. Besides that, this place place packs a big flavor. I ordered a falafel pita & it was all sorts of wonderful. It was also spicy which I love. The falafel itself was crisp but soft center & all the spices were definitely there. The only thing that they should really work on, is the pita itself. Otherwise, it is still a great option!

Dan L.

Yelp
I've been gone from Cambridge for 3 years after moving to Los Angeles. On returning to the area for a friend's wedding, this was the only place we went back to to eat. And it did not disappoint. Sometimes nostalgia elevates the memory of how good the food actually was, but it actually matched what I remembered. My wife thinks its the best falafel she's ever had (I had the beef and lamb shawarma. And most important, the staff cares. The head of the place remembered my name after all these years. It's the only place I miss in Cambridge/Boston.

Gary L.

Yelp
Great late night spot. They do takeout up to 3 a.m. on weekends. Got the falafel. Delicious. I got two. An unintended consequence of eating the falafel is that it has cleaned out my colon over the course of the next day. So, it has that benefit, in addition to being delicious and satisfying. I will be back to this spot.
google avatar

Rahul R.

Yelp
Aleppo does falafel sandwiches really well. They are always fresh, tasty and aren't anything crazy expensive. I love that this place is always open late and their staff is nice and friendly. I typically get their triple veggie falafel sandwich and it's consistently good.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
The Aleppo Place is a major update to the original Moody's Falafel Palace in the same location. I have been a customer for over a decade and have always enjoyed the falafel and the lamb shawarma grilled on a vertical spit similar to the famous Turkish döner kebab. The food is delicious as expected. But the bakery items especially the middle eastern cookies (called ma'amoul or maamoul) with pistachio, date and walnut fillings are amazing. :)
google avatar

Jess S.

Yelp
Lovely falafel pita. Flavorful falafel, fresh greens, spongey and warm pita. Open for late night eats! Yum factor! Small place, good for takeout or stand up to eat at the counter. Fast service. Cute little place.
google avatar

Soo T.

Yelp
Wow!! I randomly stopped by this place and grabbed a chicken & rice plate and a falafel pita ($17.99 for this combo) and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious and refreshing it was! They use fresh ingredients and it doesn't make you feel like crap after... it's almost like homemade food The guy that worked there said their food was good but I didn't really take him seriously, cuz like everybody says that about their restaurant. But it was NO JOKE! I really wish I took a pic of my food before I ate it so I can post it! I'm def gonna become a regular...
google avatar

Julian K.

Yelp
I've been here 3 times since they've renovated. Every time I've been given a sample of falafel. One time they accidently made me two of my falafel wraps. And another time I was unsure of one of their sides so they gave it to me on the house. Not guarenteeing free food - but they certainly seem friendly about sharing their cuisine. And the wraps are great. Their falafel has great texture and has a pleasant and subtle kick to it. I'm partial to the triple veggie wrap but I'll certainly keep exploring their offerings.
google avatar

Amira S.

Yelp
Review based on pickup order. The falafel and rice wete not fresh and cold. I picked it up right on time so I think it must have been a day or two old. The lentil soup was delicious but based my falafel and rice experience I wont be back.

Beki F.

Yelp
Can't stop thinking about how delicious it was! I wish I lived closer and could eat here more often! My friend and I were shopping in the neighborhood and wanted something quick and hearty to eat and had mentioned falafels. We found this little place like magic and ordered their buy 2 pitas special. We couldn't decide between falafel or chicken shawarma so he was nice enough to put both on so we could each taste both. It was so fabulous and very fair prices!
google avatar

Trevor B.

Yelp
Some of the best Middle Eastern fast food I've ever tasted. Don't miss out on their incredible lentil soup!
google avatar

Kate G.

Yelp
Great prices, great fresh foods! The falafel comes in a fresh soft pita, not rolled up like other places. It's really good and tasty, and the lunch special (2 falafel sandwiches for $14) is a great deal for the area! We've had the classic falafel pita, the falafel with roasted eggplant, and the falafel with garlic sauce, along with a couple of the hand pastries. Have loved everything so far! You have to do takeout from their website in advance, but this makes pickup so easy and fast.
google avatar

Amir A.

Yelp
The place is really clean with excellent service. The workers are very genuine and they pour their hearts in what they do. Dany goes above and beyond to make sure that costumer needs are met while Mo Junior's warm hospitality is always appreciated. The Menu has options but its not too big, so you know that they pay attention to details. Mediterranean Arab cuisine with good quality food and better value.

Jon G.

Yelp
This is the best falafel shop this side of the river period. Real pita pocket not the fake wraps we got accustomed to. Large portions, fresh falafel always and a very clean set up. very consistent quality every time I visit. Excellent genuine salads and quick service. This is what a falafel place should be like, we are truly blessed to have these guys in cambridge.
google avatar

Sandra A.

Yelp
Best Falafel Place and the kofta has so much flavor They have lot of vegan options. Must try Garlic sauce, the lentil rice is made with sweet onions which is unbelievable!!!

Jo D.

Yelp
This Central Square hidden gem whips up amazing Middle Eastern food and more people need to know about it! It's right in the heart of Central Square, very conveniently located. Food: Words can't describe how in love I am with their falafel. I didn't even care for falafel before discovering this hidden gem. I've had their chicken pita once but I keep craving and going back for their Classic Falafel Pita (served with mix spring salad, pickles, and tahini). The falafel is consistently tender, flavorful and well seasoned, and I'm convinced this is how falafel is supposed to be. The pita bread it comes in is well seasoned and enhances the sandwich. Even though it doesn't need it, I love adding in the onion salad (not sure what it's called) for extra bite. Watch out for the optional spicy sauce... In generous amounts it's super spicy! Their sides and home-baked sweets are delicious too. I've had their lentil soup, baba ghanouj, tabouli, and baklava. Service: The staff are so nice! Professional and friendly. Really feels like a local family-run spot. Note: It's a small takeout spot. I appreciate that they have a takeout window with clear signage so you can maintain social distancing from other customers while ordering, paying (contactless credit card is possible), or picking up your online order. I don't recall if there was a menu posted in the window but it's all on their website too (where you can order ahead).

Fatooma M.

Yelp
Normally I don't write reviews even when I don't enjoy the food but when I pay and the food is horrible I need to share my review. We ordered 1 shawarma plate and 2 lamb shawarma plate. The food was flavorless not even salt!!! and the chicken very hard to chew. The rice was not cooked well!! What a waste of money we didn't even finish the food! It was the first time and will be the last time. Will never visit again!! Very sad.
google avatar

Annie R.

Yelp
Solid late night meal option - my only quibble is that the meat we got (chicken platter and lamb platter) could use some more seasoning. That would take the experience from 3 to 4 stars because the sides and service were great.
google avatar

Whitney M.

Yelp
This is such a cute and small lunch place! The falafel and hummus are both amazing and the serving sizes are awesome. The staff is super nice and friendly. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Christine O.

Yelp
Great food for good prices. Get the platter, meat and hummus are delicious and personally I think the rice is delicious.

Susanna D.

Yelp
Bomb falafel pitas. Better flavors than clover and pita cambridge imo. Skip the chicken and beef.
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Great for a quick pita sandwich, and fairly accommodating for alterations from the menu. It's a casual, standing room only type of place, where you order, pay, and then take your food elsewhere to consume.

Anne S.

Yelp
The food - apart from the glorious baklava - is mediocre at best and the service is appalling. We were served our first course with no utensils to eat it with; that took another ten minutes. My entree was served but my companion's had disappeared although it had been ordered four times. Eventually it came. After leaving we were stopped at the door and accused of not having paid for the second entree, which we had already paid for before sitting down. Stupidity or theft? I don't know but I am not going back. Anne

Maha M.

Yelp
I come here for their hummus and it's so good! I grew up in the Middle East and it's so hard to find authentic good hummus. Their falafel are good too. Grape leaves were okay, not my favorite. Haven't tried much else yet but probably will in the near future. Price is a bit on the higher side but that's in line with every other eatery in the high traffic areas of Boston.
