On the Grid : Alex Theatre

"The Alex opened its doors in 1925 as a Vaudeville house and movie palace and is now a registered historic landmark. The theatre’s entrance is hard to miss as you roll North on Brand Boulevard, with its neon lights and sky high protruding tower. The marquee stays packed with local acts and film classics, as well as ballet and orchestral numbers. This LA theatre has seen opening lines for films as huge as Star Wars, which is why it's so awesome to still see long lines of excited theatre attendees." - Forth + Back

My first concert here at Alex Theater. The performance was cancelled but there was no notice via email, text, smoke signal… something! It was just closed. NO note on the ticket counter to notify concert goers of the cancellation. There were a bunch of us that stood there confused. A sign or a notice at the will call would have explained the closure.

Great venue. No bad seat in the house. The acoustics were also really good. We went to see Bill Burr and it was a very good time. They had bars setup outside, inside and even up on the balcony. There were plenty of restrooms so there was no waiting. We enjoyed our time here.

Everything could be good, but not enough they asked for my driver's license aat entry, they also wrote down my personal information on some kind of paper, not even some legally printed, to allow entry. WHY and WHERE that information will end up? Even TSA doesn't collect so much information. I see two options, paranoia or fraud, which absolutely won't surprise me, by seeing who was collecting information and how they were handling it. Second. Absolutely mishandling the crowd. After passing the gate, there was no control over the crowd. Visitors were standing all over without keeping the corridor to and from doors of building to the gates for those people who wanted to walk in or out. Third. Allowing visitors to smoke on the territory. Forth. Some of the employees?? which is supposed to help and walk visitors to their seats, got attitude. Some elderly "walker" who were talking to a couple of people, without greetings, but with an unpleasant ton, told! me, that she will help me. When I politely informed her, I knew where my seat was located, she whit unhappy face and ton, in front of those people said "look at him, he knows where his seat is. Go, go to your place." That completely ruined my evening. By the way, it was my first visit to Alex theater. And I have feelings, the last. Unless the real trained and educated people will be hired for those positions and, most importantly, the collection of personal information, will be eliminated from the requirements to visit theater. It's just a simple theater, not an airport or a prntagon. Fifth. The show started 26 minutes late because some people, as usual, were late and still allowed in after 20 minutes of the show started. I will suggest informing ticket buyers that the doors will be closed right on the mentioned start time, and no refund will be given by printing that warning on the posters, tickets, and website. Most importantly, the administration will follow that rule. The event took place on April 25, 2025, at 7:30PM.

Great fan meeting experience with my daughter and her friend! Beautiful theatre, inside and out, and I was lucky to get Rockstar parking on the same block!

Google
I’ve seen a lot of Glenda youth. Orchestra shows here and also saw the Los Angeles ballet doing the Nutcracker before the Covid hit and it was pretty cool. I just wish they would like maybe do like perform soundtracks from like video games or something maybe have like K-pop idols performed too. Mainly they should do like video games soundtracks Concerts, which is very popular. I hope that they can also do more films score soundtracks concerts. I think this needs to be even more and more popular so people will appreciate that kind of stuff either way I do like coming to the theater and it’s all things to my dad and my grandma for taking me here

Great theater to have you screening or host an event. Plenty of space, beautiful interior and exterior design. The ceiling is gorgeous!

Saw Bill Burr here last week. This is old school Hollywood energy mid city. Love this theater!

Yelp
It's definitely an older theater but small and intimate! We watched the Nutcracker and happened to be upfront so had an amazing view. I dont love that there is only ONE stand for refreshments so its extremely slow! Other than the entrance where it looks grandiose and amazing. Going in.. its very underwhelming. I love that courtyard though so gives you a good space as a breather during breaks. parking- the perks they offer $1 parking for 4 hours in 3 different lots close by. i used the one on Orange street and then i had walked all the way to the end of the street to go around to the Alex Theater. However there is a little alleyway with greenery tunnel that helps you cut through the buidings so you come out right across for the Alex theater than having to walk all the way around. if you come out from the parking, turn right and you will see it!

Yelp
Definitely a three-star/four-star tweener. THE GOOD It's a historic theater with a long history, and some of its exterior architectural details are interesting, especially considering what a Podunk place Glendale must have been in the 1920s. Besides the lovely old marquee and quaint Futurist (?) box office, there's a nice courtyard between the gates and the theater building itself. I came recently to see my cousin conduct the Armenian Pops Orchestra, and the outdoor area really enlivened the experience, as people had plenty of room to mingle in the perfect weather without crowding the theater itself. It was also fun after the performance, although the employees seemed a little too premature in shooing audience members off the premises entirely. The acoustics of the theater are very good, and the seating feels wide rather than deep, which makes it so that more people can be close to the stage. THE BAD It's an old theater. Some old theaters age like fine wine, but most start to show their age. Unfortunately, the Alex is showing its age. The seats have obviously been replaced many times over 100 years, but it doesn't look (or feel) like they've been replaced or reupholstered in the last thirty. The seats and rows could also use better, more visible numbers and letters, respectively, so that it's not so difficult to find your seat in the dark. The slope of the aisles as they approach the stage is nice and gradual, but when you enter the theater itself from the lobby, you have to go down two small sets of stairs, with different doors feeding into the same place. It seems like a minor thing, but that additional set of stairs really serves no purpose except to create more risk for a fall, especially if there's an emergency. The stage itself is very small for the size of the theater. This really only matters to the people performing here, so if you're thinking of using the venue for an event, be sure you have enough room for your performance. The interior of the theater is also shabby in a run-down rather than a classic way. Old places like this should transport you back in time to when they were new; they're not supposed to look old. They need to repaint or at least touch up the decorative details above and around the stage. I don't think it's advertised anywhere, but the Alex Theatre is supposed to validate parking for the municipal structure nearby on North Orange Street. I happened to know about this when I arrived, so I validated my ticket in the machine right away, but after the performance, the workers said that the machine wasn't working, so whoever parked in that structure and hadn't already validated their ticket ended up having to pay way too much for parking on a Sunday night. FURTHER THOUGHTS Am I being too hard on the old boy? Possibly. Its location is perfect, especially if you have time before the show to grab something to eat--you'll have plenty of choices within walking distance. It's also very close to the freeway. Still, after the buildup of the exterior structure and the marquee and the courtyard, the theater itself feels disappointing. I would definitely come back to see another musical performance, but there are plenty of better historic and new theaters around. The Alex doesn't stand out.

Yelp
Went to the Alex Theater on the 20th of September to see Angelina Jordan headline her first LA area show! The venue has an old school nostalgic feel, not quite old Hollywood but close. From the marquee to the box office the courtyard and the lobby the vibe brings back a mid 20th century feel. The auditorium and stage were set up beautifully with great acoustics and site lines. The seats were comfortable for the audience. Really enjoyed the whole experience! All in all a great way to enjoy the musical talents of Angelina Jordan at a venue that was perfect for a tuneup before her major tour.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times over the last 20 years. Honestly it's a cute theater, not too big. I have seen The Nutcracker and Annie here a few times. I feel like the theater is a bit worn out and could use a little tlc. I get that it's an old theater, but perhaps they could update a few things. Staff have always been very nice to us with each visit. Usually before or after shows, we like to walk around the street in front as there's plenty to do there.

Yelp
The Service: Every staff we have encountered are very friendly & helpful. The Theater: It's a landmark in Glendale. Love the historical exterior look. Nice courtyard to hangout before the show. Mid size theater with good sound system. The Parking: They validate parking for 3 close by public parking structures. We went to 222 S. Orange which is about 2 minutes walk only.

Yelp
Alex theater is a landmark in Glendale, specially for Armenians. Most major shows and concerts happen here. I have been here so many times and always enjoyed my time here. A beautiful, clean and nice theater in the middle of Glendale. It's kept well and I really value that. Friendly staff helping everyone. Many restaurants and bars all around.

Yelp
A magnificent vintage theater dedicated during to an era when movie viewing and stage performances were a special event. So wonderful to see it is in such wonderful condition.

Yelp
I came to the Alex Theater tonight to see The Nutcracker with my old man, and I felt like I was at a Chuck-E-Cheese. It was such a bummer. Children and adults were carrying on loud conversations, using flash photography during the ballet; children were literally running up and down the aisles during the show! It was so hard to appreciate any of the play. The show couldn't end soon enough. There was no attempt by the ushers to mitigate the chaos, maybe because this is a standard now? In addition, there appear to be no easily accessible elevators or ramps in the upper areas. For folks with mobility issues, like my dad, that is not cool and pretty nerve-wracking. There were no announcements made announcing the beginning of the show or intermission. If you're not sitting near the front of the stage, you'll likely not be able to see much. This theatre has so much potential, but it really needs an overhaul physically and with the expectations set for its attendees. I don't see myself coming back unless major changes are made.

Yelp
Went to watch a premiere here and they did a great job with organizing the event. Checkin went smoothly. Set up inside was gorgeous. They had drinks and food outside that allowed people to mingle and chat and the ushers were very helpful.

Yelp
So sad to see a beautiful venue run so terribly. Management is a disorganized mess at best. I was simply trying to figure out if I was in the correct line at check in as I purchased VIP tickets. I kept getting different responses from everyone, nobody seemed to be on the same page. Finally asked to speak to someone in charge just to make sure if I was where I was supposed to be....the team member from management (a young lady with green streaks in her hair) not only couldn't answer my question but her breath REEKED of alcohol and she was visibly intoxicated then just walked away from me without offering any help. Needless to say, I will never be coming back unless new management takes over, then I may give the Alex another chance but until then this farewell

Yelp
Came here for the Nuggets show back in May. The theatre is beautiful and set up great. The show was amazing and the sound was awesome. I attended the same show in NY where I live and i am so glad I went to the one at Alex Theatre because it was a million times better! Staff was friendly and efficient. The outdoor area is very beautiful. Lots of parking around too.

Yelp
The Alex Theatre has a Hocus Pocus event. The staff was helpful and attentive. The theatre and the bathrooms were clean. I would definitely go again!

Yelp
It was really difficult to admire all of the beauty this theater had to offer once. Long lines to grab a refreshment/snack, which is to be expected with a busy night. It was the selection of snacks that really had me puzzled. I went for a ballet so the noise of popcorn bags being opened and cans of cola being opened was not necessarily what I was hoping for. Programs were not avail when we walked in, so instead they started handing out programs in the middle of the second act. In-between acts, several folks got up with stretch, walk around, use the restroom... there were no announcements made that this is not an intermission, or any ushers around indicating this is not the time to get up. Mind you, I sat in the balcony where several phones were out during the show, a phone call was made, several tardy people were still allowed in to grab a seat after the show started, and I'm not sure if the crowd I was sitting with thought this was a ball game; they were just so rowdy. Maybe it's me, but I've been to a nice production before, and perhaps everyone forgot how to act in such an event.

Yelp
The Alex Theater is in the center of the downtown Glendale on Brand Ave.. It looks like a small theater from the outside, but the inside is pretty big with an Orchestra level and two different level on the balcony seating. They don't have elevators, but the stairway is not too steep, only a few steps. The architecture is beautiful although it is a bit outdated. An older theater but kept in good condition , which is perfect for the Art deco 1920's vintage style. They do have a small refreshment stand that sells water and soda, and I believe you can take that into the theater. The stage is magnificent. We were invited here for a filming of a capella group, Pentatonix's Christmas Special concert and it is amazing how they transform a regular stage to a beautiful Christmas setting. You can literally sit anywhere and get a good view of the stage. (I know because I had 4 different seatings for this stage. From Balcony level to Orchestra middle section and Orchestra back let section) They validate parking for the nearby parking lots, and there are two lots behind the theater almost adjacent to each other. Easy access and love a more stress free, and intimate venue to see a good show or concert compare to Hollywood Bowl or the Greek Theater.

Yelp
Beautiful theater! Great acoustics. Both the interior and the exterior are beautiful. Artists' entrance is to the rear by the alley. Parking can be found in the lot across the street to the rear of the theater. Conveniently located near food establishments so you can enjoy a meal before or after the show and just walk there.

Yelp
Huge venue with two levels of balcony seating and an orchestra level, so if you are expecting a small venue, this is not it. Still, we enjoyed our performance here of the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles featuring special guest Alan Cumming this past weekend. Acoustics weren't great (not as crisp and clear as the Ahmanson in downtown LA), but I think sound issue were due to microphone problems as there were a few moments where the sound dropped out. It's great that they offer validated parking at three different nearby structures (see my photo for locations and addresses), giving you 4 hours of parking for only $1 if you validate in the lobby. The outdoor has a large patio that is enclosed from the city street and gives you a beautiful view of the facade of this historic 91-year-old beautiful theater. For concessions, they serve Porto's cookies and pastries! You can get a guava or cheese roll or cookies for only $2 each here and the beer was only $5. The location is in central downtown Glendale, so right next to cool bars and the Giggles club, and right across the street from the Halal Guys which is open until midnight so makes for a great bite after a show. It's also across from the world famous bakery 85 Degrees if you want authentic Taiwanese/Chinese baked goods or tea drinks.

Yelp
This is a great venue to come see a show! It's a pretty intimate venue, so there's not a whole lot of crowd to deal with. It is stadium style seating, with an orchestra level and a balcony. I definitely prefer the orchestra section for seating, and as long as you're in front of the front of house you won't have any distractions. The architecture of the building is beautiful! There are concessions outside, as well as cocktail tables for chatting. Parking is fairly easy, there are lots all around the theater. Some are free and some are not, but they can fill up quickly so arrive early if you want to park close to the venue. The staff at the theater is very helpful. Sometimes productions run late, be patient, especially if you're going to see a live taping here. Also, if you're going to see a live taping that required you dress up, ladies bring another pair of shoes in your purse, trust me.

Yelp
Absolutely stunning inside and out. Huge fan of keeping our #LA landmarks intact and wow, just wow! A variety of programming to select from, do be sure to catch a show and support a neighborhood gem. Went for the Opening Night of the LACO and it was our first time to the Alex, since being restored. From the twinkly courtyard lights, the guilded cielings, and wonderful sound quality- an experience to be shared and enjoyed. Leave time for parking, or consider uber. Plenty of places nearby to have a pre and/or post show indulgence. We opted for dinner nearby and courtyard bevs at intermission.

Yelp
I love Art Deco theatres, and this one is so charming with all the outdoor space out front to hang out before the performances. There is a concession stand out front, and the seasonal cocktails were excellent, and good thing, because I really needed it for this matinee performance of the Nutcracker. Unfortunately, as with most older theaters, seating sucks unless you are close to the stage. Combine that with lots of kids who need to prop up their fold down seats and sit on the edge, and an unobstructed view of the stage becomes near impossible. The kid next to me was smart and carted in his own booster seat. From the glimpses of the stage I did get, dancing was fabulous and the set was more traditional looking. Some of the costumes needed work--example: The mice looked like scary rats. The lesson here--buy your tickets early or bring a booster seat like the kid next to me.

Yelp
Came here last night to see the LiveTalksLA speaker series, with Bob Iger and Brian Grazer. Bob is the CEO of the Walt Disney Company, and he had just written a book, so this was his time to talk about his book, answer questions from the audience, and try to sell more books! Apparently, Iger is donating proceeds from "The Ride of a Lifetime" to educational initiatives aimed at fostering more diversity in the field of journalism. I sat in the orchestra section, about 5-6 rows back and had a perfect view of the 2 celebrities. This was my first time at a LiveTalksLA event, so it was interesting to see what it was about. Long lines to get in, event did not start on time, maybe about 12 minute delay. Parking was available in 3 lots around Alex Theater, and you only pay $1 for parking, as long as it's validated by the theater, for up to 4 hours. I parked in 222 Orange Ave lot. It seemed the closest to the theater in my opinion.

Yelp
Alex Theatre is a gorgeous theatre nestled in the city of Glendale. It's style is vintage Hollywood, built in the 1920's. I understand that it used to be a movie theatre. It's style and decor is beautiful. Because it was built in the 1920's, Alex Theatre has a very intimate feel to it. It's not an oversized theatre where one would easily get lost. There are quite a bit of stairs and my legs got a good workout the day I went. Parking is available in nearby structures and some street parking is available as well. Access to Alex Theatre is very easy, front entrance only. There is a small concession stand outside but the line can get long. There is also a bar inside. The women's bathroom was impeccably clean! I think the best part of Alex Theatre is the abundance of restaurants nearby. After the performance I went to, I saw all the nearby eateries fill up with guests. I didn't get to stick around and explore but during intermission I did walk over to Pizza Rev for a quick bite. The performance I got to see was the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. They couldn't have chosen a nicer venue for the spring performance!

Yelp
Last weekend's performance with the LACO was outstanding! Gershwin was breathtaking. Congrats to the theatre and LACO!

Yelp
The first time I went to the Alex Theatre was back in 1977 to see the original Star Wars. My mom and I walked over there from our home a couple blocks away and it was jammed packed. We ended up sitting in different rows. The Alex Theatre has been a Glendale landmark since 1925. It is owned by the City of Glendale and operated by the Glendale Arts non-profit. In 1992 $6.2 Million in public funds was used to restore the Alex Theatre. Now it is home to the Alex Film Society, Glendale Youth Orchestra, Los Angeles Ballet and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The Red Chair Children's Production Company presents The Nutcracker on December 13, 2015. On February 27, 2016 the Los Angeles Ballet presents Don Quixote. There will be many other productions so check it out. I am really glad the Alex Theatre was added to the National Register for Historic Places. I wish they would show the new Star Wars film there.

Yelp
Always a great location for the Gan Men's chorus. Sound is fabulous. Only improvement I would suggest is have better trained ushers.

Yelp
We attended the Gay Men's Chorus Christmas concert on Dec. 18. A big shout out to Andy, the floor manager who helped us with our seating issue. The seats we purchased were on the second floor and due to recent falls, we were unable to go up the steps. Andy found us 2 excellent seats on the first floor that were even better than the ones we bought. There was no beverage service available for purchase and Andy brought me a bottle of water. In addition to being one of the best concerts we ever saw, the special treatment we received was amazing. Thanks Andy for making our concert experience super special!!

Yelp
Very cool old school theater where you can still see some old 35mm movies. We went to the 22nd annual three stooges film festival and it was a good time. Many restaurants to choose from in the area and decent metered street parking. My buddy Kurt is a big Shemp fan so I went to keep an eye on him since I had to question his judgement after he told me shemp was awesome. It's Curly or nuthin for me!

Yelp
Date nights are fun here, I enjoy the small little theater and it's charm. It's a great location and love that they play classics from time to time.

Yelp
The interior is just beautiful. The seats comfy. I had seats right beside the barrier upstairs in the first row. Great view.

Yelp
Such a great venue in the middle of Glendale, CA. Went to see our friend Fahim Anwar for a live recording. Super fun and he was so funny we were wiping away tears. Comfy seats and good visibility of stage from all angles. Great venue, great location, great night! Parking takes a little work but if you live in LA you know the drill.

Yelp
Bought my tickets about a month ago for Jo Koy's taping of his 2nd Comedy Central special. When I placed my order it clearly stated that there was no age restriction. So I got a ticket for one of my friends son who is just a tad under 18. Wednesday before the performance, I got an email from Elissa Glickman (The General Manager for Glendale Arts) saying that "No one under the age of 18 will be seated. Email says to call them if there are any issues. Well I call....get thrown into voicemail. I emailed them, no answer. I sent them a @reply via twitter. No response. So Im scrambling to find a replacement for this ticket - Thursday comes and still no response to calls, emails & tweets. Friday afternoon, someone finally calls me back (the day before event) and they said they checked with Jo Koy (who I also tweeted about this issue) about the material and it would be ok. SO they sent out an email before even checking with the performer???? So its the night of the show, we get there an hour early (just in case) and we saw this huge line - my first thought was "its assigned seating, why is there a line?" Waited for about 30 mins and then someone with a walkie talkie tells us "if you have your tickets you dont have to wait in this line" Good job Alex Theatre.... We walk in - my friend that was under aged walked in without any issues. Its smaller than I thought it would be, the inside is a bit old fashion looking. I think it needs a makeover. Seats are not comfortable and its crazy hot in there - but that might be due to the fact that they were taping and they had all the production lights on, but it was HOT. Show was good - I didnt like the "IN YOUR FACE" tactic by the camera guys trying to get your reaction to the jokes. I tried my best to keep my poker face and when I saw the camera pointed at me, I kept popping my gum. Overall - the theatre is very unorganized. Just a nightmare. But Jo Koy was great.

Yelp
I love the Alex Theatre. It was built in the 1920s and to this day it has so much history and character. I can only imagine what it would have been like as a movie theatre back in the 1920s-1950s! My amazing cousin gave me tickets to see the LA Ballet perform Romeo and Juliet a few weeks ago. The show was incredible but very long lasting over three hours. They held two intermissions, which was unnecessary. Not sure if they always do two intermissions, or if it was unique to the performance at the Alex? Thankfully the seats were very comfortable and made the long show an enjoyable experience. Parking is plentiful and if you park in a garage the Alex will validate your ticket. I hope to return for another performance soon!

Yelp
Beautiful theater! Art Deco styling. No " bad " seats. No elevator, but only eight or nine steps to the lower level. Concession stand in courtyard sold bottle water for $2. Fair enough.
google avatar

Sonj H.

Yelp
Nice old theater in downtown Glendale. Pretty environment. We saw Romeo and Juliet by the LA Ballet Co. It was an excellent production but it lacked the live orchestra, and I wish it was not a cash only bar out front (only one). The show itself was quite good, but three hours was too long. It did not need the second intermission and the very extended melodramatic elements at the end, although I appreciate the darts of humor interspersed. Shakespeare to me, just is not Shakespeare without some of the lively banter and tongue twisters, but Mercutio especially did an excellent job translating the language into the language of dance, as did Juliet. It is a nice venue, not my favorite but an excellent evening.

Yelp
Review for tonight's concert: DO NOT COME to this place if you are going to watch a pinoy oriented concert ......it is very unprofessional to schedule a same day flight as your concert and have your audience wait 3 hours for a performance......THEY SHOULD OFFER REFUND AND RESCHEDULE THIS INSTEAD.....and do not incorporate religious reference/fellowship because you run out of pass time activities....it is completely unrelated to the event. And the music at the theater in the beginning of the show sounds like a broken cheap radio....‍

Yelp
Was here to watch a good friend's performance. This is my first time being at this theatre. It's nice, but isn't very big and perhaps, I can even use the term "vintage" to described the interior decor. The location of this theatre is on a busy street, blend in with a bunch of other small businesses and retails. There is parking, ranging from street meter parking, to private lot and garage parking. So if you're not familiar with the area, it might be a bit of a challenge to find parking that you can park for over 2 hour without having to worried about feeding the meters if you're going to be in the area exceeding those time. There's a bunch of meter parking that's usually taken, since these people are probably there to grab a bite or do some quick shopping, and does not exceed 90 mins, or you pay a couple bucks. There's also private lot and structure parking walking distance from the theater. Given I'm familiar with the area and the parking situation, so I know where to park. The parking structure's first 60 mins is free, I believe it's $2 after each half hour or 1 hr. This is probably the only time I had to pay, since it exceeds the 1hr free, which isn't expensive for 3 hours anyway and I'd rather have my car parked in a garage than on the street meters or open lot. So if you have a nicer car- I would suggest you spend a couple more dollars and parked your baby in a garage parking like I did. :)

Yelp
Came here for the 1st time last night for the Three Stooges event. According to the website, the Alex was built in 1925 and seats something like 1,600 people. Architecturally, the theater has that same majestic quality as the Egyptian & the Pantages: winding staircases, sloping aisles that will ensure no one's head is in your way (*vertigo sufferers, beware of balcony*) and a dated, old-timey charm. My only gripe is the place had no elevator; the stairs can be difficult for older folks and those with orthopedic issues to reach the balcony level. Seating: Main floor and balcony area with different tiers of seating in between. There were so many different places to sit I actually tried out 4 different sections (upper and lower) before I settled on the balcony. Note: the center balcony rows can be a bit narrow for those who like a little more legroom. Try sitting a little off to the side for more space. Bathroom: I didn't use it, but I was told the gentleman's bathroom was quite nice. Bar/Concessions: Not sure if concessions are always outside or just for this event. For this event, they were sold outside: $2 popcorn, $1-$2 brownies, $2 coffee. "Bar" area was on top floor and was limited and dated. Parking: Lots of options. Got lucky and found metered parking in front of the theater. The Alex is w/i walking distance of Americana/Brand Blvd. shops & Galleria so you'll find something. Restaurants: Too many choices to count, lots of dinner options w/i a block or two. Added bonus: Porto's is across the street. :)

Yelp
Over all good experience for my first time there.. This theater been here for decades. this is a historical building. No parking here. Best option is public parking on Orange with 90 min free and it takes you 5 min walk to Alex theater.

Yelp
A clear four stars from me for the venue. I bought my tickets on line for the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. Website worked well and I got the information on parking, security check, and tickets pick up. Do plan to arrive one half hour before the start. Website gives you seating layout and "view from your seat". If I go again I would try for an aisle seat, leg room is limited. For me, there was a crush of people I m not comfortable in crowds, but that's just a part of dealing with it. Sound was excellent.

Yelp
I can remember the days when the Alex Theater was open just for movies. I think the last movie I saw there was Staying Alive Part II with John Travolta back in 1983 with my mom, sister, and aunt. Lol.. The disco days were something. Just curious to know when disco is coming back. The Alex closed down for years only to open up for performances. I've been here quite a bit in the past since my niece used to perform ballet here a few times a year. I usually fall asleep at these performances until someone wakes me up when she performs. Then, I'm all eyes. The architecture in here is classic 1920's. I'm assuming it was built around that time. The entry has an open courtyard with concessions. Having managed construction projects and work on historical renovations, I admire the craftsmanship of this classic theater. It's rare that theaters are designed like The Alex. Glad to see it has been appreciated enough to be preserved as a part of history.

Yelp
Love trying new things and what is possible in life is being able to when you are young. This place is looking old but still classic. I feel like i have walked into a different era that is for sure. Alex Theatre is small but it gets to the point. The tickets and pricing are about the same as any other place and I don't feel like I'm being ripped off at all. It is reasonable and well worth it in my opinion. We went to go see the Nutrcracker done by the Los Angeles Ballet. I have never seen the LA ballet but have always wanted to. Just because I hear soo much about the NY ballet and everything I was thinking it could be set as that high standard. This play as many of you would think had a lot of young children in the audience. It was a little bit troublesome but if you minus the kids this would have been a awesome event! Also in the intermission they do serve some alcohol. If you need it!

Yelp
If you are a movie guru, this place does amazing showings of great older movies. They do these helpful short introduction and tell awesome trivia about the film you came to watch. They also invite people from the cast to give you some inside stories. Warning, you have to sit through a membership spiel, but other than that it is all very fascinating and informative. The theater itself is beautiful, so come a little earlier to catch up on its history from 1925. Goldstar frequently sells discounted tickets, so take advantage. Plenty of parking around and nice restaurants to go before or after the show. Americana mall is only 5 minute walk away. So make a day of it and enjoy!

Yelp
I was at the Alex Theatre last week. It is a nice venue. There is a lower level and a balcony area. The entire venue was air conditioned which was nice on a warm evening. There was a small concession area where you could get water or soda. It was a bit over priced but what isn't now days? There didn't seem to be a bad view from any seat in the venue. The front row of the balcony had some lighting but I'd take that over a tall person sitting in front of me any day. There are a few public parking structures and the venue will validate depending on the performance. I'd love to see future performances here.

Yelp
Since 1925, the Alex Theatre has been a fixture on Brand Boulevard in Glendale and 82 years later is still going strong. It initially first opened its doors as part Vaudeville Theater and part motion picture theater. During the late 20s through to the 50s, the Alex served as more of a preview house for major Hollywood movie releases, so quite a few glamorous movie stars made their way to the Alex. In terms of architecture, the Alex features Egyptian and Greek motifs, but in the 1940s, Charles Lee, a famous movie theater designer, added a 100 foot tall Art Deco neon tower with a spiked starburst at the top, which is still there to this day. Another thing that makes the Alex Theatre unique is that it's an "atmospheric theater." According to the Alex Theater website: "The auditorium of the theatre is designed as an "atmospherium" with an open air illusion enhanced by the stage-set wall encircling the auditorium, creating the feeling of being enclosed in an ancient garden." So why am I telling you all this? Well, because I want to encourage you to take a tour of the Alex Theatre like I did last year and what better way than to give you some tidbits of information? :) Tours are offered twice a year and are FREE. Now how can you go wrong with a FREE tour? On the tour, you'll learn more about the history about the Alex as well as visit parts of this historic theater, not normally open to the public like the dressing rooms, the projector room, etc. With eateries close by, you can make an afternoon of with it with lunch at one of the local restaurants. Now that's a nice way to spend an afternoon. To find out tour dates and times, visit the Alex Theatre website below: http://www.alextheatre.org/tours.html To see pics I took at last year's tour, go to: http://www.flickr.com/photos/la_addict/sets/72157600035496366/

Yelp
I have been to the Alex Theatre a handful of times for various shows. It is not the most glamorous venue, but it has a lot of character and old school charm. The entrance is a huge outdoor courtyard, and to your right you will see refreshments sold. There is also a bar upstairs for the upper level. As soon as you enter, there are ushers who are extremely helpful and willing to find you your seat. They will guide you in which direction to head, are there you will find more ushers to tell you where you sit! The staff is definitely kind, courteous, and easy to get a hold of. I have sat both on the lower and upper level. Since it is a smaller theater, there really is no bad seat in the house. You can see the performers very well from any seat! There are restrooms on both floors, and they are always well maintained. The parking around here can look like a mess, but I have always found a metered spot on Brand Blvd and walked right over. I do recommend the Alex Theatre to anyone in the area who wants to see a local performance!

Yelp
Isn't it grand that the Alex Theatre was preserved and now is used mostly for live shows whether they are plays, musicals, or other events. I was coming to Los Angeles for a late fall getaway and I checked the website for what theatre was playing and I found a Monday night show! That's amazing, so I bought a ticket. I came here last night to see a concert version of the Broadway musical, Fanny. It has a long Broadway history, but it was never revived so it was last seen in the 1950s. Last night, the Music Theatre Guild put on the show and it was superb! One look at the Alex from the outside told me I was in for a treat. The courtyard between the box office and the entrance was nice and the inside of the theatre is grand! Looking at the rising sun in gold above the stage is amazing! I truly am a fan of this theatre and hope to be back here for another show when I'm in LA in the future. Restaurants and parking are everywhere and it makes the visit to the Glendale area so pleasant. Yay! I am a fan!

Yelp
The show was great but there was one older female employee (late 40s I think) that was very rude and ruined the experience. I went today and sat down in the orchestra area which my ticket listed and she was like go back up to the balcony. I showed my ticket and said and my ticket says row p orchestra. Thought she understood but she came back 5 minutes later and told me to move further down the row to make room for a family. I paid for my seat so I'm not sure why I had to move. Maybe she discriminated against me because I don't look wealthy. Very disorganized.

Yelp
We came here one night to watch one of my favorite singers Davis Gaines "Longest running Phantom of Opera, EVER" in Pantages Theater and in Broadway.. This theater has a lot of leg room space... Coming from a 6 foot dude like me is a huge advantage from getting my leg cramped within 20 minutes of watching a musical or play... The lighting and design of the theater is simple and unique... The feeling is so elegant with bright red carpets and comfortable seating.. I haven't been in the restroom area but I heard it's scary in there.. I'm glad I had the experience of visiting Alex Theater.. If there's a great show coming up, I'd definitely watch it there.. Location is sweet with Porto's Bakery less than a block away, Starbucks is a 2 minute walk... Secured parking complex is plenty on the other side on Orange Ave.

Yelp
I maybe a little biased I've been working here part time since January. But it truly is an awesome space. I love the architecture and the little artistic details throughout the courtyard, theater and lobby. It is an almost 90 years old building, so there's neat stories all throughout the history of the place. The only real drawback of this theater is the fact that there is no public elevator. It doesn't matter to me since I love running up and down stairs, but I know for a good majority of our patrons, this is a huge disappointment. And since my job is to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable, this makes my job a bit more challenging. But all in all, if you plan your visit in advance, letting staff know that you can't (or won't) do stairs when purchasing your ticket, it isn't as frustrating for all parties.

Yelp
This place is a joke. None of the people working here know what the hell they're doing. They don't know if you need wrist bands or don't need wrist bands. They don't know what sections their tickets are located. If you're in the business of selling show tickets get your whole staff on the same page. I mean they've got one of the opening acts standing on stage for what seems like an eternity because no one can seem to figure out how to play her music that she's supposed to sing along to.
