Yelp
I've been living here for just over a month and was waiting to leave a review. While the bad reviews initially scared me away, I'm so glad I gave the Alexan a chance. I love living here!
A few things that make the Alexan great:
The value for money is incredible-- the prices and deals make it feel like a steal, especially considering the amenities (pool and nice gym) and location. Obviously, I would expect concessions aren't as great at renewal, but every building is like that.
The on-site staff is exceptional. Tiarah, Derwin, Ramon, and Angel deserve a special mention - they're incredibly helpful, nice, and invested in the building.
I've found a great sense of community here. Neighbors are friendly, and there's an active building chat where people are always willing to help each other out and let you borrow things. Management has hosted one building-hosted event, but otherwise, neighbors find ways to get together on the chat.
Maintenance has been top-notch. Just last night, when my smoke detector started beeping at 11 PM, Derwin was here within minutes. Every other concern has been addressed within 48 hours. The property is well-maintained overall and always being cleaned.
My Thoughts on Things I Read in Other Reviews:
Safety: I've never felt unsafe in the neighborhood. It's comparable to any other urban area I've lived in - just use normal precautions. I heard a non-resident kept tailgating and getting into the building, but management said they now have a restraining order on him, and this was before I moved in.
Noise: The pool area is quiet and locks after 10 PM. I'm a light sleeper and haven't experienced any issues with excessive noise except for one day when they turned over the apartment above me for the next tenant.
Fire Alarms: In my time here, I haven't heard a building-wide fire alarm go off once. The ones inside our units are somewhat sensitive, and I have had issues when I don't turn on the fan, but it's easy to hit the button and reset.
Management: The new management team has been here for about 6 months and is good. They're responsive and seem to care about residents' experiences.
Parking: I was on the waitlist for my first month but just found out I'm off the waitlist and will have a spot next month. The garage is very secure and safe (it also helps that I still get phone service in the garage).
Location: It's great - close to BART for commuting. Lots of nice restaurants nearby. Super close walk to Whole Foods and Grocery Outlet.
Loading Dock: There can sometimes be large items and lots of trash in the loading dock area, mostly due to neighbors. Management can be a bit lax about this, which has pros (easy to get rid of junk, use for moving in) and cons.
The Few Downsides:
Package room: the package room is pretty disorganized, so it can be hard to find your package unless you have a photo of what the box looks like. I haven't had an issue with any packages being stolen, and there's also an Amazon locker for smaller packages.
The buzzer system doesn't work, making it tricky to let guests in (you always have to go downstairs). My lease also only gave me one key. I wish there was a digital or keyless entry system.
The leasing process was slower than I would have liked. I had to follow up a few times to get what I needed, but I also am a bit impatient (I like getting things done quickly).
Sometimes, there's trash in the streets surrounding the building. However, this isn't the management's fault - it's more of a city issue. The building itself is always clean and well-maintained.
Despite these minor issues, I'm genuinely happy with my decision to live here. The positives far outweigh the negatives, and the value you get for the price is outstanding. If you're considering this building, don't let the negative reviews deter you - it's worth checking out for yourself!
