"There’s something magical about dining in this house built in the 1890s that has taken on many identities — a grocery store, a laundromat, a deli, a gym, a paint shop, a thrift store. Today, it’s a homey tavern restaurant with entertaining, family-owned memorabilia along the walls, like old sports teams and local brewery signs. The menu is definitely entree-heavy, offering a vast range of them — a creamy honey chicken pasta, a stroganoff, and a London broil, all for around $20. If it’s not for the food, go for the service, where just one step in the door makes any guest a longtime regular. Weekends are super busy, and there are no reservations, so expect a wait. The house rule on the menu is, “If you can’t have a good time here — check your pulse!”" - Kayleigh Ruller

"Alexander Michael's, a beloved tavern in the 4th Ward, has a real neighborhood flavor. It doesn't take reservations and there's nothing fancy about it, but somehow the classic bar makes you want to sit for hours and tell the person pouring drinks your troubles. Diners here aren't up for frills or fuss. They're here to see some friends, have a couple of local craft brews, and get a burger without losing their shirts." - Nancy DePalma

"Fondly called Al Mike’s by locals, this Charlotte staple that opened in 1983 offers a low-key tavern experience with unpretentious food. It’s impossible to go wrong with the quinoa black bean vegetable burger or the reuben on rye (get a basket of Cajun fries, too)." - Katie Toussaint

Google
First time visiting and had a good experience. This restaurant seems to lean hard on the pasta as its specialty and recommend sticking to that area. The fried pickles and potato skins were excellent. Couldn't ask for a friendlier staff.

Our first time coming here. First off, parking is ridiculous. Having to drive around in circles until someone moves is a bit much, especially on a Saturday night. We did not have to wait at all. Was able to get a booth, in which we prefer. However, there are lamps at the booths which brings in a nice ambiance to the setting, however there was dust and cobwebs collected upon the fixture. Definitely needs to be wiped down when cleaning. The food was really good. I got the Honey Chicken Pasta and added Shrimp..was perfect! My partner got the Feta Chicken, in which he was pleased as well. If I lived in Charlotte I would be a regular, but living 1.5 hours away, I would definitely consider other options first.

Google
Alexander Michael's has an eclectic menu that has some savory food for every pallet. The pasta.dishes were fantastic and we added a fried pickle appetizer. Our server Lacy G. knowledgeable, kind and attentive. We had a great meal in Charlotte's home town eatery.

Food was delicious. The blackened catfish was moist and juicy. My family had different pastas with chicken. The “What it is” was very good too. For a busy Saturday the food came out quickly and the waitstaff was attentive. We will be back!

Google
This was our first time visiting. The restaurant is in a neighborhood and for us it was a little difficult to find as our navigation was taking us all over but we finally found it. There is no parking lot so you have to find parking on the street. By accident we parked in a tow away zone and the waitress saw us and immediately came out and told us so we immediately moved the car. That was super kind of her and we appreciated that so we did not get towed! Inside it was nice and we got seated right away. There is a lot on the menu that looked delish. I settled on a pasta dish with chicken, but the chicken was a little dry but still tasted good. My friend got a different pasta dish and she said hers was really good. Prices seemed far and service was great. I would recommend if you are in the area. It was 50 minutes from our house and would not have visited if we were not going to see a show after dinner only due to the drive, but glad we did. Would recommend!

The K Green Show

Google
4.5 stars Irish pub in the middle of a classic charlotte neighborhood. Street parking only so be ready for that. Place got really busy really quickly on Saturday night, with a good wait for a table. Large bar that of course has Guinness on draft, which is the best. Menu includes sandwiches and pasta with some tasty sides and salads. I had the rueben, which was small but delicious. The blackened chicken sandwich was a hit as well. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal. Very reasonably priced.

Google
Just what we needed. Tucked away in the quaint 4th ward of uptown charlotte, this pub boasts of Boston in a southern city. An oasis for beer drinkers and stroganoff chasers. A mist see if you’ve been to uptown a few times and are looking for the hidden gems. Also, a tight squeeze so large groups may have trouble.

Google
I am drawn to neighborhood restaurants where they can walk to the restaurant and bar. I can't do that because there are none in my neighborhood. This restaurant is quaint. You'll have to wait if you go right at lunch or dinner time. We arrived for an early dinner before the crowd started to arrive. My food was just okay. It was Blackened Catfish with a side of veggies. On a scale of 1-10, I give the fish a 5. The atmosphere and service is inviting so I will definitely return. I am told the brothers are excellent.

Yelp
A true hole in the wall! We came across this tavern while walking through the Fourth Ward Secret Garden Tour. It was a nice stop after walking through the neighborhood. It's tucked away on a corner, I would say street parking only, though you could Uber and it's pretty central within Fourth Ward. We ordered drinks and an app - the DC Potato Wedges - which really hit the spot. Prices were reasonable and the building itself is pretty cool, dating back into the 1800s. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Definitely enjoyed the experience and would love to return to check out more of the menu!

Rob W.

Yelp
Just the neighborhood water hole. Great food great atmosphere great staff. Added photos for your enjoyment. Been coming here for decades.

Melody McCord S.

Yelp
Great "whole in the wall" local restaurant, with a great vibe. We knew walking in that the food would gonna be good. The lunch menu was simple. 4 apps, sandwiches, salads, and soups. I ordered the London Broil Sandwich as recommended medium. I added mushrooms and sautéed onions, add tomatoes. It was a little chewy just as the waiter started but good and the hoagie bread was soft and yummy. The loaded potato soup was creamy with cheese and crumbled bacon on top. The hubby ordered the Half Pound Burg with the three cheese blend, sautéed onions, and bacon, and bit was it a lot of yummy, crispy bacon; he LOVED it. The onion rings were cooked to perfection, light, fluffy, and delicious.

Yelp
This place has been an Uptown staple for over 40 years and it's easy to see why. No fancy tables or drinks, just good food, beer and great staff! I went in before the football games yesterday and even at 3pm on a Saturday there was a good crowd! Testament to how good they are. The vibe is casual and super relaxed so no need to dress up I got the London Broil sandwich medium rare. It was huge! Packed with perfectly tender steak with cheese and peppers. I was blown away. I could barely finish it. If you find yourself in Uptown, get there. It's one of the few local restaurants that have been around for over 40 years, it deserves our business!

Yelp
Had a great lunch today at a hidden away little neighborhood bar called "Alexander Michaels" in the 4th ward. . The minute you open the door you are transported to the "Cheers" bar. This cool historic place was really busy but the bartender didn't let that stop him from greeting us immediately and made sure we were taken care of at the bar which in itself was so interesting. I ordered a Ruben sandwich which was juicy and the other order was a London Broil sandwich which was tender and came with a hoagie roll. Both were delicious. I would definitely recommend this cool place.

Christine S.

Yelp
This place was great. It is a pub with american food. We came in half an hour before closing, and they had no problems serving us food. The waitress was quick and efficient, and the food was delicious. The prices are decent, and the walk from our hotel to the restaurant took us through a park and the cutest neighborhood. Definitely will be back if we are in the area again.

Yelp
First time at this cute quaint bar/restaurant! On National Pasta day! We started with Spicy Crab Soup - wonderful flavor (needed more crab)! Then we all three had Pasta. I had the the Chicken Marsala ! Served Piping hot in a delicious cream sauce with chunks of chicken! My son had the Beef Stroganoff served with Rotelli pasta and beef. And Husband had the Special Pasta with Blackened Chicken. And Pasta! Service was great with an extensive Craft Local Beer list! Try it - it's great !

Melissa H.

Yelp
Excellent service and food. I had the Greek salad special and my husband had a Rueben sandwich and fries.

Todd C.

Yelp
I was in Charlotte for work and a coworker suggested I give Alexander Michael's a try for dinner. I was alone so I chose to sit at the bar. I was quickly greeted with a smile by Natalie, the bartender. Natalie let me know their Wednesday special was buttermilk chicken which came with gravy, mashed potatoes and an additional side. She said it was very good, and popular. Man oh man she was not wrong. It was a taste explosion in my mouth. So flavorful and juicy! For desert I had the lemon blueberry cheesecake, goodness!! All around a 10/10. Great food, excellent service, and really cool history/ambiance. I will be back!

Katie G.

Yelp
In town visiting and stumbled upon this place while biking. We tried the spicy crab soup, which was excellent, the burger, and tuna melt. The tuna melt was served cold, the cheese wasn't melted but the bread was toasted, very weird in my option. Burger was a typical burger. I will say, the prices are very fair, cheaper than the places uptown. Beers on draft are $7 each!

Audrey U.

Yelp
Wow - Alexander Michael's is a hidden gem. I've been here numerous times and highly recommend. It can be as casual as you want it to be or a great date spot. Be sure to read the history on the menu as you'll find out more about the bathroom pole, the cooler and history of the building. The history makes this place even more special! It has a neighborhood feel and the staff is very friendly. My favorite dish here is "What it is" aka creamy Cajun chicken pasta. If I order an appetizer, I either ask for them to split the dish in the kitchen or take some home for lunch. House wine by the glass is a great price, especially for people who forget to drink while eating like me! Also, I left my phone here once and the staff stayed after hours to wait for me to pick it back up. Even though my phone wanted to have a sleepover, they went above and beyond!

Rachel M.

Yelp
We tried this new spot for the first time. It was really good. We loved the local pub vibe. It was the only restaurant and near other neighborhoods. The menu had a lot of options, but we went with the special. It was so big we had to eat it with a fork. The fries were good, but the Cajun fries were a little salty for me. I also found out there was a different dinner menu, so we may try to come back to try more. Our waiter was attentive and helpful with refills and checking on us.

Nirali M.

Yelp
I've been here twice now and both visits have been incredible. The first visit was on a Saturday night and the wait was about an hour long; they don't allow reservations, so you have to go in person to put your name down. The second time was on NYE and we were able to get seated within minutes. The service each time has been fantastic (coincidentally had the same server both times). The food is DELICIOUS! I've had the honey chicken and the Athena pastas now and had leftovers both times (the portion sizes are great). This has hands down become by favorite restaurant in Charlotte, wish I could give it more than 5 stars!

John D.

Yelp
The service was slow despite not being very busy (35 minutes for food). The food was okay- toppings were missing from the sandwich. Good ambience.

Kieva S.

Yelp
Round 2 Food was delicious Again I didn't get our waitress name But Murphy (our waitress from last week) remembered us which was a delight. We will be back we like the vibe

Kristy P.

Yelp
Great service, fun neighborhood vibe. The only downside was that my London Broil meat was tough. Husband like what he got. We'd go again.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
Quiet place for lunch. We were sat immediately. Surprisingly very affordable. Staff was friendly.

Julie P.

Yelp
Still an amazing gem in fourth ward. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu! The Ruben is always a classic, the crab soup has a bit of spice that will warm your soul, and the pasta salad is simple, yet delicious. Do yourself a favor and come here.

Maddie K.

Yelp
Absolutely love this neighborhood spot! It's in an old historic house and the vibe is super casual and feels like home. It's more of a low key bar/ restaurant feel to it. The staff is always very attentive and they always bring out the drinks and food fast! You can't go wrong with any food, but the special pasta is to die for! They don't take reservations but you can usually get in if you go a little early. Parking can be tough so I'd recommend walking or ubering if you can.

Monica F.

Yelp
Great food and great service! I went with a friend for lunch. We both ordered the Cajun chicken quesadillas but I didn't taste any heat. It was still good! The flour tortillas were...fluffy? So soft and delicious...I also had the spicy crab soup again I didn't taste spice. It is tomato based but still delicious! No complaints- would come back again. Attentive and caring servers!!

Mike G.

Yelp
This charming old-style house-turned-restaurant is a lovely hidden gem on a tucked away street that doesn't feel like you're in the city. It looks on the inside like an Irish Pub but it's so much more than that, and isn't sticky. The food was absolutely delicious and I recommend building your own pasta since the options are far and wide. The service was lovely. Our waitress was very accommodating to our build-your-own questions.

Nancy P.

Yelp
Very nice place in 4th Ward in Charlotte. Good food and very nice staff. Good wine at good prices.

Jordan E.

Yelp
Your favorite flannel and worn-in-denim in a pub. Al Mike's is an uptown Charlotte neighborhood treasure. Gah this place is delicious and cool! Get the cheese fries with ranch, the London broil, the What it Is (IYKYK), and anything else that sounds good to you on the menu because you can't go wrong. *protip: if you're a true german beer lover, this bar has Fransiskaner Weißbier on draft!!!! Rejoice! Nestled into the 4th ward on a residential corner, Al Mike's hits for date night, the big game, brunch, late night, family dinner, you name it. I've loved it for years and you will too.

Greg S.

Yelp
I loved this restaurant! It was built in 1890 and it was a general store back then. It's located in Charlotte's historic 4th ward. The restaurant has a cozy warm feeling. The food was excellent and fairly priced. I will definitely be back.

Talia S.

Yelp
This is such a cute little home town pub/restaurant atmosphere! The staff were kind and accommodating. Super friendly. The food was SO good. Well done, excellent portions! I am wheat free and there weren't a lot of choices, but when I asked they were ready to offer option such as serving my beef stroganoff over a baked potato or fries!! My husband thought it might have actually been better that way!! The prices were fantastic but when I saw the portions.... Wow, especially for downtown.

Denis D.

Yelp
OMG! What a great little restaurant!! Not much advertising from the outside. If you drive too fast you're gonna miss it! :) Reasonably priced. Friendly service. The blackened catfish really, really good!!! Would definitely go back!

Pearce D.

Yelp
Great local bar with solid food, drinks and atmosphere. Burger was excellent. Will definitely be back

De'Anna W.

Yelp
This is a hard review to write. This was my second time here. My first time was 2 years ago and I've been suggesting to come back this whole time because I remember having such a great experience then. Yesterday, something was off. It was 3pm on a Saturday and they weren't very busy. Service was good. The bartender greeted us and sat us immediately and the waitress was attentive and nice. Our food came in a decent time but had absolutely no flavor. I thought I was losing my taste or something because my pasta tasted like a bowl of butter noodles. I asked for another sauce to pour on top and ended up recreating my dish adding marinara, salt and pepper. For a $19 pasta I was very disappointed. My bf had the burger and he said it was nothing special didn't have much flavor. The Cajun fries were the best part. Now those were hot and delicious. I've been hyping this place up for 2 years and yesterday made me really contemplate why.

Brian B.

Yelp
This place has a good menu, and really good service. I was disappointed with the honey chicken pasta. It's such a popular dish but missed the mark. However the quesadillas were perfection. I'd visit again and try something different. And I have to say it again the service is what I believe when they say, "Southern Hospitality", this is what they mean.

Raquel S.

Yelp
Cute little neighborhood tavern/restaurant in uptown. We had no trouble getting a table early on a Tuesday evening. By 7pm it was packed. Very family friendly. Full bar, beer and wine, TVs for sports watching, street parking only. We ordered the What It Is Cajun pasta (good but not spicy, in case you're wondering) and the black bean burger (not good, very bland) with onion rings (very good). Food was pretty good, service was very attentive.

Ken G.

Yelp
I read about this while working downtown Charlotte on Trade Street. Alexander Michael's looked like a short walk on the map so we hoofed it. We had forgot Charlotte has hills, being from Dallas this is not a problem. My wife and I had the burger and our friend had the Rueben. Our burgers were good, I'm glad that we went there. If I had of had the sandwich our friend had I think I would have been disappointed. It looked kind of light in the meat department, the last Rueben I had was stuffed with corn beef. I still recommend the burger and I would like to check out the Rueben next time I try this place.

Kyle B.

Yelp
We arrived early in the evening, around 4:30 and the restaurant was about half way full and we were seated immediately. I ordered a couple draft IPAs that were brought over quickly and tasted great. To start, I got the Caribbean jerk chicken quesadillas. They were hot and crispy and were served with salsa and sour cream. They had great flavor to them and were crispy on the outside, but I didn't really get the Caribbean jerk flavor/seasoning to them. For my entree I ordered the London broil sandwich with jalapeños and French fries. The food came out in a timely manner even though the restaurant had almost filled up since we had arrived. My initial impressions were good but it definitely could be improved up. The menu stated it was shaved London broil on the sandwich but when it came out, the steak was cubed. It wasn't the biggest deal as the pieces were not huge, but some bites I got too little or too much steak. I couldn't really bite through the steak so I either got all of the price or none of it. It was a little more done then I had ordered but still tasted pretty good. The French fries were good I just think they lacked seasoning. Throughout our entire visit our waitress was very attentive and quick to bring things to us when we asked for them. If I'm back in the area I would definitely give them another shot and try out some of their other menu items.

Christopher J O.

Yelp
Came here with a group of fellow dive bar/local spot enthusiasts and MAN it didn't disappoint. Literally every thing was good. Stroganoff, honey chicken, reuben, quesadillas, whatever we ordered it was good. Including the catfish. The "what it is" is probably the best thing I've tried here. Price is right, location is great to walk off the food or beer afterwards. Don't hesitate to head here - just don't go when I'm trying to get a table.

Blake R.

Yelp
The perfect neighborhood pub. Dimly lit but bright with local characters and friendly chatter. We stopped in for a super casual dinner after flying back from a weekend trip, but you could do anything at this bar - business meetings, lunch with friends, romantic dinners tucked into a corner. Serving up all the bar classics with surprisingly good food too. We split the stroganoff and a salad and have absolutely no complaints. Solid food, solid service, great and comfortable place that I'll definitely be coming back to.

Carol F.

Yelp
Love this place. Old school pub with great service and great food.I had the Ruben and I loved it. The others in my party had the catfish, excellent, and the London broil sandwich also delicious. The drinks are wonderful.

Jonathan P.

Yelp
Great place we walked in and were seated within a few minutes and the staff was very friendly and the food was very good also it's the oldest commercial building I guess in the area which is kind of neat and the interior of the restaurant has an old charm to it that is difficult to find.

Tom S.

Yelp
Try the soup!!!! Alexander Michaels is a wonderful old school Charlotte spot. Think dimly lit bar room with fantastic soup and sandwiches. Service is friendly and prompt. I've heard the burger is very good. For me the soupS are the star here. They have the spicy crab bisque every day which I don't find to be very spicy just a mild bite with a good amount of crab. Today 2 colleagues and I all had the chicken noodle soup, (soup of the day) and it was the best chicken soup I've had outside of my mom's kitchen. Both colleagues loved the soup with one saying it was the best chicken noodle soup he ever had. The turkey sandwich was pretty simple but very good. As we raved to the server about the soup I'll repeat our suggestion, make that chicken soup an everyday thing or at least regular (Wednesdays perhaps) and I bet you will see some traffic especially during the winter!

Lori M.

Yelp
We were in Charlotte four nights and ate here once but went back and had drinks two more nights. Atmosphere is very local and service is great. Food was great and we had a carrot cake for dessert that was worth every calorie. I love local places and this was our go to restaurant/bar. I even wrote it in my notes under Charlotte so I can remember it if we are ever in town again. Parking may be a challenge. We walked so it was easy.

Katie W.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in Charlotte! The incredible food, atmosphere, & staff are the top reasons! Very neat spot in 4th ward Uptown! Highly recommend the burger, Cajun fries, crab soup, & more!

Valerie S.

Yelp
Spicy crab soup was hot and delicious. I tasted a strong flavor of tomato in it though, but personally not a bad thing. Just must of been a tomato base soup. Ruben was one of the best I've tasted. Perfect amount of all ingredients. The 1/2 burger was a great size and filling. I got American cheese and bacon as my two add ons. They gave you a generous amount of bacon. You can add the soup to your meal or get it as your side. Atmosphere was very cool. Lots of history. It's said to be haunted, that's why we went on Friday the 13th. Check out the wood around the bottom of the bar! Our waiter was overly friendly but fine! He quickly got busy during the lunch rush, so he didn't have much time for extra conversation with customers. He got our order right and everything came out quick. I will definitely go again!

Rachel M.

Yelp
The food and service was great. I am a big Reuben fan and this one was one of the best I've found in the city. Cajun pasta was also fantastic and came with a very large portion. The only thing we didn't care for was the blackened catfish because it was a bit fishy. Would definitely recommend my friends to come here. The prices are very reasonable for a great dinner!

Jessica C.

Yelp
I'm not sure why I'm just now writing a review, AM was and always has been a date night gem for us. It small quaint but packing with flavor & hospitality. We went on a Saturday this time at 7pm and I can tell the word has got out about it. There was about a 15-20 minute wait, it's cold so the host told us to squeeze on inside. I specifically came for the spicy crab soup, and decided to try the London broil as my entree. I normally get the BYOP(pasta) which is also YUM! My hubs got the blackened catfish and mmm it literally fell apart in my mouth! He unfortunately didn't let me try the black beans, when I asked they were already gone :( - I had to have the broil prepared Medium but they prefer medium rare I believe. Our waitress was super sweet and made sure our water was full and had an amazing mocktail made for me. (That did not make my stomach hurt) so shoutout to the bartender! We will definitely be back! Oh yea, the holiday decor was adorbs!

Julie R.

Yelp
Delicious! Only had one meal here but it's a super cute neighborhood spot and everything I tried was delicious. Blackened catfish was actually blackened not just covered in burnt spices (you know those places I'm talking about lol) and spicy crab soup was delicious! Coke products if you care about that sort of thing (and I know you do.)

Evie R.

Yelp
LOVE Al mikes. We've lived in 4th ward for 18 years and we've been regulars. Don't sleep on their chicken noodle soup! Steve is always a pleasure

David G.

Yelp
This is gonna be a short review. The food: excellent. The drinks: excellent. The service: excellent. The End.

Danielle W.

Yelp
We ate here before a comedy show... BIG mistake- after I ate, I needed a nap!!! The portions were huge and the food was absolutely delicious. Came out piping hot and the spicy crab and blackened flavors were amazing. The spicy crab soup and what is it are a must try! The drinks were good too! We will definitely be back!!! Thanks Alex and Mike's- we absolutely enjoyed our dining experience!

Dixie B.

Yelp
My daughter l, granddaughter and I had attended a memorial service in NC, and stopped in Charlotte for the night before heading back to the daughter's home on Sunday morning. I found Alexander Michael's on Yelp, and thought the menu looked like something we would enjoy. And, right I was! All three of us enjoyed our food. Also, the Owner was on site, and you really could tell that he is invested in his restaurant and his patrons. He was friendly and welcoming. Visit Alexander Michael's; I think you'll find something you like, too. Just watch out for that column in the women's room!!

Charlotte H.

Yelp
Classy, small, intimate restaurant, with a great bartender, who remembers your drinks.

Frank Y.

Yelp
Great food, atmosphere, and service! Thumbs up for the chicken sandwich and Cajun fries and the stroganoff. Very nice neighborhood restaurant with great food and service.

John H.

Yelp
Came on a Friday night around 7:45 and had to wait about 15 mins for a table. They don't take reservations and the gentlemen taking names and seating people runs a pretty tight ship :) I love the setting and atmosphere of this place....really cool spot with some history behind it (read the back of the menu to know more). The Spicy Crab Soup ($6) was highly rated....so we had to try it. It didn't disappoint! My bride went with the Feta Chicken ($19) and I had the What it is ($19) and we both enjoyed our dishes. The chicken portion size could probably have been a little bigger on both. Service from Vicki was excellent. Will absolutely come back!
