15 Best Bars in Montreal | Condé Nast Traveler

"Picture a garage next to a parking lot in an industrial neighborhood (Mile-Ex): That's Alexandraplatz. Open seasonally, this big indoor-outdoor space features a sliding garage door, allowing it to merge with its surroundings. There's some seating in a wooden enclosure on the street itself, but most of the seating is indoors at long, narrow communal tables and matching stools. The short menu of house cocktails ranges from classic (like a straight-up Dark & Stormy) to creative (like a Ginger Lime Sake, with ginger-root sake, tonic water, and fresh lime juice)." - Isa Tousignant

The platz is alive with people all day we found the world's smallest Gay bar 🍻 and had a wonderful time with the locals. Before moving on to enjoy the sun shine it's a great experience

I visited this place first when I came to Germany and it all felt so unreal. Loved the vibe over here and it was an amazing experience. I visited the mall and it was good. There were few food trucks and seating for having some relax time while just enjoying the view and surrounding. I visited on a weekend in summer and there were many people around having fun. Overall a happy place.

Google
Beautiful place to visit in Berlin. Definitely for stag and hen does as well as couple weekend break. 30 minutes train journey from the airport, easy access to all the different transportation options. Great options for food and easy access to museums and landmarks.

Google
Really fun place to people watch- there are wild antics going in every direction. Spaces to picnic under the trees and cafes dotted around the perimeter. Lovely church to sight-see and it is also close to a nice boulevard with great shops like Lindt and IKONO experience.

Google
A busy hub with shops, restaurants, and street performers. Great spot to explore Berlin’s vibe, and the TV Tower is just around the corner. Always something happening!

Google
One of the first places coming to mind as far as Berlin is concerned. Marked with the famous TV Tower, surrounded with Red Town Hall and other iconic places, followed by a big boulevard with lots of stores and restaurants & cafes on both sides and at the end, there is the world clock. It is always lively, you may come across the performance of some street artists.

Google
We were delighted to Visit here in Mid. May 25.A very nice place of Berlin where large no. of peoples from different regions gather here for fun, celebration, party and marketing. A festive mood with songs, music, dance is entertained by the mass gatherings.

Google
It is the best place in Berlin for shopping. If you are in the center and don't know what to do, there are many activities going around this area. I have visited it countless times and still love it. The best part is all kinds of restaurants and connectivity to most important parts of Berlin.

Yelp
When my mother and I were traveling last month we walked through here en route to a different destination. It's a nice, little area. There was some pretty 'central-city' vibes with a lot of businesses and restaurants. There was some construction, I believe, when we were there so we had to navigate a bit differently. Overall, this area is pretty cool with some cool stuff to see.

Yelp
This is another huge pedestrian place, which used to be the main market place before industrialisation and all that. I'm not sure what it was during the period that it was part of East Germany, but these days it still sort of retains that market atmosphere, more so because it happens to be surrounded by shops, and one of those gimicy towers that people travel to the top to, well, just have a look around what is basically a mostly flat city. Still, it isn't too bad, just not great.

Yelp
I literally loved this area! This area reminded me of union square except on steroids. This place is about 5 times bigger than the union square in New York City and offers so much more life. There's a giant fountain where you can sit around if you get tired and shops surrounding every crevice. The store Primark, H&M and other modern brands circle the fountain. It is definitely the holy mecca of all shopping needs. The best part of it is the fact there's no highways or streets. Due to this great design, you're easy to move from store to store without having to cross streets, etc. Which definitely maximizes your shopping time. If you're ever in the area, please stop by! Or just make the trek here yourself. You can also great photo ops of the tower in the background. Your choice!

Yelp
I really like this place. Alexanderplatz is the place got everything! It is a large public square and transport hub in the central Mitte district of Berlin. This is the other big square which very popular. Compared with Potsdamer Platz, Alexanderplatz is less modern, and much more urban like. It got a totally different vibe here, I find it somehow charming. There many different things going on here, Museum island is close by, for the people who loves art and history. Also there couple historical sights around, such as Berlindom, Berlin TV Tower. East side gallery is not so far away. Great place to shop, so many different brands can be find here. The best thing is most of the shops got really great price. During the years, there are many festivals will be hold in the middle of the square as well. For example, there got a pretty cool Christmas market in December. In the normal days, beside tourists and shoppers are around, you could always find some street musicians are performing here. Some time at the you can find them at the U-Bahn station, or near the World clock. This might seem a bit dirty a messy, it's always busy. You even can find many graffitis around the place. It did make the place much more different. I think this might be the place, either hate it or love it.

Yelp
Found this public square/market place on a Monday while randomly walking through Berlin and fell in love. There was so much going on! A lot of people and a lot of energy. Plenty of little shops, food stalls/trucks, cocktail bars and entertainment for kids and grown folks alike. They even had a little amusement park towards the back. I was able to shop around for souvenirs, sit down and chill while having a beer, and also look at some of the shows that were taking place. They had this awesome dragon made up of junk throwing fire to the rhythm of music and it was pretty fun. They also had a clown performing a show for kids in another section. You get a splendid view of the TV tower as well so it makes for some great pictures. Additionally, it's noted to be one of the biggest transit hubs in Berlin where you can easily connect to several trains and buses. It's a good way to spend a few hours during the afternoon/night.

Yelp
Alexanderplatz basically is a large public plaza in the centre of Mitte, arguably this is what some might call central Berlin. It has a train station, a fairly large train station as well as other shops including TK Maxx, two branches of Starbucks, and a branch of large chain Vapiano. Alexanderplatz is also home to the TV Tower, which is so large it can be seen from so many points in Berlin and it is also the second tallest structure in the European Union. The overall feel of Alexanderplatz is okay, obviously, it doesn't compare to the likes of Champs Elysee in Paris and even Kurfürstendamm, which is also in Berlin. Alexanderplatz is a decent hangout and decent location in Berlin, it has a train station and a few amount of shops, and a large shopping mall (Alexa) nearby and it is also home to the TV Tower, but apart from the TV Tower and having two (albeit quite poor) branches of Starbucks, this Alexanderplatz doesn't have anything overly feel to it, which is a bit of a shame, hence only warranting a medium to high two-star rating.

Yelp
This open area is located right outside the transport hub of Alexanderplatz. With the local area playing host to tourist attractions like the towering Fernsehturm and many shopping options, it's a natural draw for locals and tourists alike I can see this open space being used in different ways but it was hosting an Easter market when I visited. Although less famous than the Christmas markets that Germany is famed for, it had simialr stalls. Just to complete the Christmas feel, it snowed in Berlin over Easter and kids were having snowball fights If there were street entertainers, I would likened Alexanderplatz to Covent Garden in London

Yelp
I have no idea why and I feel so dumb for how it happened but I lost 100€ in a game where someone's moving little cubes and one ball under one of them.. they played a few games in front of everyone and then someone handed me 50€, being confused and not understanding of the language everyone started to tell me what to do in English. The game seemed so full proof :) I knew where the ball was... or at least that's what they wanted me to think. The people around me told me to put my foot on the cube while I was doing anything but they were all together looking as though they were people just watching. I was told by a few locals and Jedi's of Berlin that they were street thugs/gangsters. I have no idea what they were or why I was so dumb and felt so pressured but just beware everyone. Overall, alexanderplatz has been the hub of where I start my day. You can grab coffee then go shop or take a tram towards where you want to be. I gave it two stars because it is crowded, smells horrible, and just not all that great as it seems after a few days of hanging out there. Beware of hustlers and beggars...

Yelp
Bleh....this place SCREAMS tourist trap! Dirty, overpriced, and way too many people. Thought I could find a few stores that interested me in the area or even street vendors selling cool items, but this certainly was not the case. Everything looked cheap and overpriced for the quality. Of the 3 street vendors I came across, none of the items looked even remotely desirable or worth the price they were charging while the expensive stores in the area were charging about 100-200 euros per item. There was really no heart to the area or authenticity to the experience....locals/Berliners seem to know to avoid the area as I only came across tourists.

Yelp
Maybe I just came too early for anything cool to be happening, around 930/10am, but it seemed pretty dull. Just a lot of tourists. Oh, and the TV tower. And a fountain (I think) I found ugly. There is a lot of space for them to host markets here though, which would be pretty cool to see.

Yelp
Berlin is the city with many hearts. Alexanderplatz is one of them, the biggest one. Visiting there and enjoying a portion of Currywurst with a bottle of German beer from a wursthut is a must when you are in Berlin. Trust me.

Yelp
Busy transit hub plaza with easy access to shopping, hotels for locals, great view of the TV tower from many angles.

Yelp
One of my fave place in Berlin. If you would like to see different-styled people - come to Alex! Yes, there are enough tourists but anyway.. There are much place for shopping and eating. + so close nice fontan systems and St. Marienskirche and - weiter Berliner Dom and Unter-den-Linden. good way for walking through the famous places.

Yelp
Alexanderplatz has transformed significantly, like most of Berlin, since my first visit in 1988. The central fountain attracts punks in the summer and Christmas markets in the winter. There's always something "los" at Alexanderplatz. Take Milva's word for it.

Yelp
I came into Berlin from Schonefelde 15 years after the wall came down and savoured my first proper view of the united Berlin. The Fernsehturm could be seen some way back on the rail trip but I had forgotten how tall it was. It stands out and can be used as an orientation if you feel you are lost in the city. This year I would be staying at the Agon Alex Hotel not far away. I descended from the station platform to ground level and found the Alex Cafe where I had a glorious cooked breakfast, finished off with a strong Irish coffee...(well it was a cold day !) You must have their FULL breakfast !! I had been to this very area as long ago as 1984 when it was "East" and when there were hardly any shops. Now it is a bustling section with shops and cafes and jolly people.

Yelp
Hmmm... how to rate this place? The fountain by Kaufhof is ucken fuggly. 0 stars for that. But a nice place for people watching - the occasional break dancing group, heavily tattooed severely drunk tan human prunes, sweaty tired tourists, the guys carrying grills, umbrellas, gas tanks... The transit connections can be quite arduous. Walking from the U2 to the other lines is almost as far as walking to another stop. Take the 100 bus from here for a nice ride past some nice monuments - Reichstag, the Pregnant Oyster, Berliner Dom to name a few. Shopping is aplenty around here - Kaufhof, Saturn - and there are outdoor cafes for imbibing and more people watching. Every now and then there is an outdoor exhibition at Alexanderplatz. The last one I saw was all fire trucks and ambulances. I am still not sure how to rate it. I'll give it three stars, but you should check it out yourself. (oh, yeah...the tower, too)

Yelp
This is my favourite "platz" of Berlin. Perhaps I am just partial to the area of the former DDR, but it has a lot of charm and character. While it was built long before even WWII, due to the construction of the Berlin Wall, during this time it became the hub of East Berlin. There is plenty to see in the area, far more than at Potsdamer Platz in my opinion. Perhaps the most iconic part of Alexanderplatz is its World Clock. It is gorgeous and constantly moves, showing the time not just in Berlin but around the world. It can be fun to look at and see what the time is where you are from, assuming you do not live in the same time zone as Berlin (CET). Even so, it is still fun to look at and see what the time is in random cities such as Sydney. The clock looks even more gorgeous at night, so definitely check it out then. There is also a shopping mall here, called Alexa, definitely worth a visit. It is also very close to the Fernsehturm (television tower), complete with an observation deck and revolving restaurant.

Yelp
This plaza houses everything from great authentic food locations to many souvenir shops. It's also a place for some of the prominent monuments in Berlin. If you're visiting Berlin, make a quick stop and try a Turkish Donor Kebob or some German Sausages all within a few stores from one another.
google avatar

Marco M.

Yelp
This is one of the main attractions when you come to Berlin and is open everyday, including Sundays when all the stores are closed down. It provides something for the family to do as it has some rides for the kids. I didn't notice any games, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were some and I overlooked them. The majority of the tents or stands are related to gifts or food. The handful of the things we ate here including the pretzels, brats and crepes were all relatively good. Again, could be something to plan for on Sunday if you are in town for the weekend and looking to kill some time walking around.

Yelp
Get sucked into the one of the coolest city centers I have ever been to and a true, beating heart of this amazing city! Lights, street musicians, interesting mix of old and modern architecture, beer gardens, fountains, a church, TV Tower, hotels, statues and ginormous department store.. There was probably more but I must have missed it in the dark!

Yelp
On the first day of my trip to Berlin, I went to the Alexanderplatz - also called Alex. Where is it ? Alexanderplatz is located in the center of Berlin - Berlin Mitte. It is made of bus, trams, metro ways and buildings. What buildings ? The Alexanderhaus designed by Pater Behrens in 1929 is now the home for C&A. The shopping center Kaufhaus, renovated by Joseph Paul Kleihues. The newly buildings can look like bunkers, which is far from being aesthetic. Why is it so busy ? Alex is a real crossroad and a pole for business. It is also a meeting point. From nearly everywhere in Berlin, you can see the TV tower, called Ferhnsehturm : built in 1969, 368 metres high. It is the higher monument in Berlin. How do you get there ? The public transport system is really well done and very easy to understand. The Alexanderplatz is one of the most famous spots in Berlin. Just ask and people will show you the way. Anything else to add ? I have out 4 stars because in spite of the not so good like site, you can pretty much find anything you want there. You can also meet all kind of people, it is really interesting to see. PS : Should you be in Berlin from now till 28th August 2011, give me a shout ! I have even found an Irish pub XD

Yelp
Most amazing place in Berlin, but nothing for people who don't like crowded places since here is a lot going on at all times. A paradise for shoppers of every age! I specially love it when they have street festivals here.
google avatar

Alexandre C.

Yelp
It's a nice square in the heart of Berlin and indeed good to visit! Place was less busy because of cold wind and weather. There are many shops and restaurants to check. Atmosphere was OK.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
I really only found Alexanderplatz interesting because it's the base of the TV tower. Besides that, it's a small tourist trap with lots of shopping, Starbucks, etc. I would recommend grabbing a three euro kabab and admiring the TV tower from the terrace of your local hostel instead. It's much more picturesque from afar.
google avatar

Lene H.

Yelp
Alexanderplatz serves as a hub best avoided, but still necessity makes you pass it again and again. It's always depressing, with no charm, and architecture I hope made someone loose their job. Also, as a hub it's totally confusing, when you get off the U-bahn, and there's a million exits, and you (i.e. me) always take the wrong one, making the transit everything but smooth. What amazes me is that some people will eat in this place, it smells, the air is not made for breathing, and still people like to buy a sandwich from one of the food vendors, it really is beyond my comprehension.
google avatar

Till K.

Yelp
I am not even sure if this thing works anymore. Point taken, it's a nice photo opportunity and place to go by when people visit me in Berlin, but aside from that the Weltzeituhr has lost its charm. I remember the first time I saw it, probably in 86 or 87. If you are not going to Alexanderplatz anyway, there's no reason to just stop for this though. There's better to see in Berlin.

Yelp
Have a falafel wrap at Donor Inn around thw corner from the Park Hotel.
google avatar

Yelp
Redeeming quality was the good view of the TV Tower. Public transit options to the square were also plentiful and well laid out. Not a terrible amount to do. Atmosphere definitely changes after dusk. Highlight may have been the guy with the skateboarding Bulldog. Worth stopping for tourists.

Yelp
It's the perfect meeting point and a must when you come to Berlin.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the great symbols of Berlin. I must admit, even after almost 20 years of living in Berlin, i have no emotional reference to this place. Nevertheless good for shopping or setting a meet point.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
I was there recently on a typical European summer day. Cold, Overcast and rainy (in June). These folks ought to pray for some global warming. Parking was a hassle, but not expensive. The shops were OK, and I managed to pick up some souvenirs for my crew, There were some panhandlers, but nothing aggressive or unseemly. This place may come alive at night (I don't know, I didn't stick around). The scenery was just OK. I don't know, maybe it was the weather, but I didn't get much of a vibe from it. I have been to Berlin many times before, but this was my first time in Alexanderplatz. It's not on par with many other European cities (Frankfurt, Paris, Brussels, London, etc..)
google avatar

Darwin G.

Yelp
While this isn't really a sight to see, my hostel was right near here and it had quite a long. Kaufhof, the best food market ever, a modern mall with a great food court, umbrella wurst guys, stores, and all the train/tram lines are here. It's big, so if you do expect to be in this area, get familiar with it so you know where to enter the metro, find specific stores, etc.

Yelp
Terrible architecture ... modern city planning in it's worst quality. Even the old east German layout was in some ways better than this mix up of shopping malls and meaningless space ... this place would have deserved something way better than this.

Yelp
Long queues to get in and somewhat expensive. It is worth a visit if you go on a clear day as the views are superb.

Yelp
Best place in Berlin for young people and newcomer. So many people who makes music and singin. And the view to the Television-Tower and the red townhall is really great. Many people, many sights.. maybe the best Place in Berlin. I love it..

Yelp
Very big square where you can buy any food treats for few euros. It is linked with many bus and train to the airport aswell. Sometimes it could be caotic. Especially adviced for the Christmas Market in November and December.

Too many tourists. The clock is nothing special. Could be like any other attraction tourist attraction. Pretty pointless
