You Can Get Flat Croissants at South Bay Bakery Alexander’s Patisserie | Eater SF

"Watching a video of the bakery’s recently released flat croissant felt wrong to me — after years of talking to bakers about achieving airy, laminated layers, seeing one flattened to a crisp seemed contradictory to the art of viennoiserie. At Alexander’s Patisserie, general manager Claire Chen says the flat croissant grew out of a customer request for a palmier and chef Shu Cao’s interest in Korean-style flat croissants, and that the recipe and technique are their own; the process is similar to how they make butter croissants but is a completely new method that includes adding sugar on top for a palmier-like sugary, crunchy exterior and then flattening the pastry with “the heaviest tray we have,” roughly the equivalent of 10 pounds of pressure. In the two weeks since release the team has experimented with flavors — a plain version plus ones dipped in mango or strawberry-flavored chocolate — and Chen stresses they aren’t merely chasing viral trends: Instagram helps share work and spot trends, but innovation is about keeping the baking team motivated and exploring new possibilities, and if something succeeds it energizes the staff, which she calls a win-win." - Dianne de Guzman

Just had afternoon tea, and it was great. Those little bites really add up to a filling experience. Personal favorites were the fruit scone with lemon curd, chocolate hazelnut mousse cake, and whatever this mango thing is. The tea was good too.

Experienced the afternoon tea at Alexander’s Patisserie. Pâtisseries were great. Excellent tea selection which was from Fortnum Mason. Sandwiches were dry, and kind of tough. Their desserts are usually really good but because it was so hot outside, they were already melting and we were sitting in the shade. We ordered pescatarian / vegetarian options and they were able to accommodate. Make reservations as they are required. when we went, they only had outdoor seating so would recommend doing tea during the cooler times as everything started melting during the summer.

I've been coming to this location for over 3 years. I understand it's a smaller store compared to the Mountain View one, so naturally, there are fewer options. What is disappointing, though, is the recent drop in quality, specifically the packaging. I come here for cakes for special occasions, and these cakes are not cheap. Part of the premium experience used to be the beautiful orange boxes that felt special and elevated the whole presentation. Now, the cakes come in flimsy, generic-looking paper boxes that honestly make it feel like I bought a cake from a grocery store. Same story with the macarons, the packaging looked so cheap I had to specifically ask the employee to use the demo box instead. If you’re going to charge premium prices, at least maintain the premium feel. I really hope the original packaging comes back—because right now, it feels like the quality is slipping.

I picked up a cake for my sister’s birthday and it was extremely tiny for $15. It was about the size of my palm-or smaller. I did enjoy the taste but way too small for the value which is quite disappointing. The shop itself is very tiny also. The online system is strange. It’s confirmed in real-time, and they rejected my order three times. One of the reasons they provided was that they were sold out of the cake I ordered. But when I came in to pick up (same day order) there were plenty more in stock of the cake I originally decided on. I would’ve given up on ordering after all the rejections, but I didn’t feel like wasting time researching for another bakery.

I ordered a quiche and hot tea, both were great. The staff was very helpful and kind. I sat in the cafe to work for a few hours and it was overall very quiet and pleasant. I also ordered a ton of other goodies before leaving for a client meet, they loved everything!

Very expensive bakery but worth it. If you like macaroons, come here! Strong flavor, a little chewy with the crunch when you first bite into. Coffee and tea drinks are okay. Not many seats but you can take your pastries/drinks and eat at the Main Street park. I just found out that afternoon tea is being offered at this location 🥳 Can't wait to try it out!

Was craving a croissant and went to go check this place out. The black sesame croissant absolutely slaps 10/10. Try it you won’t be disappointed. Nice to have a neat little shop like this in the neighborhood.

The Cupertino Patisserie is hard to find. Patisserie are great. I stopped going to this location due to bad service and lack of selection. It was a few years ago but the person who helped me was giving me attitude about the cakes I was ordering.
