I haven't had the chance to try Alfred in L.A. so I was excited to learn that they opened inside SF's new Line Hotel. I don't drink coffee but I heard their matcha is good too. I visited early in the morning. All the tables were occupied, but there was no line at the counter. The staff person who took my order was very nice. I ordered the small matcha latte with almond milk. She asked if I wanted it hot or cold so I said cold. She said it's not sweet and asked if I wanted any sweetener, so I asked her what the options were. She said vanilla, hazelnut, mocha, caramel and I asked her what she recommended so she said vanilla and caramel so I went with that. She said if it's too sweet or not sweet enough just let them know and they can remake it. The bill came out to be $8.25 so I asked her why it cost so much since the matcha latte on the board was $5.25-6.25 and the almond milk was 75 cents. She told me that the syrups are 75 cents but she only charged me for one syrup instead of two. If I wanted simply syrup that would've been free. I didn't notice until she pointed it out that the housemade syrups are listed on the board for 75 cents, so it was my bad for not noticing that earlier although she could've mentioned the board when I asked what sweeteners they had.
The other staff behind the counter already started on the drink and put a lot of ice into the drink so the matcha flavor wasn't strong. The drink tasted like almond milk over ice. Since the person who took my order said I can let them know if I wanted any adjustments, I went up to the baristas since the staff who took my order was helping others in line and asked if they can make my drink with less ice and more matcha flavor, plus if I can try the hazelnut syrup. One of the staff said sure and asked if he can pour out the ice and add another shot of matcha so I said yes. A third staff person behind the counter gave me some attitude, commenting, not in a friendly manner, that the hazelnut syrup won't go with the matcha flavor and if I really wanted to taste the matcha I should order the matcha americano if I ever come back. I said they can use the vanilla/caramel then on the third shot and asked her what's the matcha americano so she explained it is matcha with water only. Anyway the matcha flavor still wasn't strong with 3 shots. My favorite matcha latte place makes a good matcha with almond milk, and the flavor of the ceremonial matcha is strong there, so I think their matcha is just bland. Also thinking back, I wished I went with the hazelnut syrup rather than letting her talk me out of trying it. Anyway there wasn't any seating available so I took my drink to the common area of the hotel. I went out to the patio which ended up being roped off, but the door locked behind me so I walked with the drink to Union Square. I recommend walking on Market to the hotel if you're interested in trying Alfred.
