Alfred's Cafe - Review - Seattle - The Infatuation

"This classic Tacoma diner is the place to go for all-day breakfast and brunch. Indoor and bar seating are both currently available, including a number of plush booths, which are perfect for enjoying one of their oversized omelets or benedicts – or burgers and fries if the craving for breakfast has already passed. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

The exterior might be a bit rough, but this is a great place for a casual meal. Think of it as combining the best of a good diner and bar food. The menu is wide-ranging, from burgers to salads to all-day breakfasts, and some 'next level's sandwiches like the Patty Melt and a Reuben. The bread which came with my omelette was truly remarkable. Prompt and helpful service, and a 'neighborhood bar' atmosphere. Good comfort food and dedicated parking.

Google
It’s an ok place, food it’s not terrible but lacking of flavor. The service was great and inside has a great vibe. The prices are quite pricey for the quality of food. We ordered 4 plates and 4 drinks 100$, 3 of them was a sandwich 🥪.

Google
First time eating here this morning, great food, service and overall dining experience. We don’t eat pork and the waitress kindly allowed us to substitute Hashbrowns for the bacon. Corned beef hash was fresh , which was a plus. Definitely would recommend.

If you find yourself moseying around the charming old historic industrial Dome district of Tacoma, perhaps antiquing or sight seeing, grab a bite or craft cocktail in The Bubble Room at Alfred's. You can eat in the Salvador Dali inspired retro vintage cafe then treat yourself to an entirely different environment on the other side in The Bubble Room. Such a cute idea and perfect name for a terrific vintage bar with a truly magnificent and historic beautiful architectural features.

My husband and I like to explore when we go out to eat. So, after my PT appointment I did a search and found Alfred’s. The building is in an older part of Tacoma. As a lifelong resident it was rather embarrassing to learn the restaurant had been around about 50 years. It is a part of town my parents ts rarely went. Anyway, we took the plunge and went inside where we immediately found a table. The restaurant is larger than it appears. Even though the building is old, everything was clean and well appointed. Our server was also the manager who was filling in as they were short staffed. It did not slow them down. They were moderately busy but our meal was still served quickly! I had the chicken fried steak with chorizo gravy, O’Brien potatoes, scrambled eggs and sourdough toast. WOW!!! Everything was hot, the eggs were light and fluffy, and the gravy was perfection!!! It had just a hint of heat, with great flavor. The bread was either homemade or artisan. It was not typical restaurant bread. My husband had the California omelette with O’Brien potatoes and wheat toast. The omelette was huge and he said it was very good. The wheat bread was also homemade or artisan. It was nice to be in a place where the music wasn’t blasting so loud that you could not carry on a conversation. It was nice to see other restaurant patrons talking to one another instead of looking at their phones. There is a free shared parking lot on the east side of the building. It isn’t huge but we had no trouble locating a parking space. I watched some of the other meals being served. They looked as tasty as our meals. My husband and I will definitely be back!

Go hungry, portions are huge. Good food and coffee. Great service. Would go all the time if I was local

Google
The perfect location if you are taking Sounder train in the morning. They use fresh blueberries in the pancakes and we loved it. Great service and great food. Yes, we will be back.

Google
Stopped for a late breakfast at Alfred's for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by the delicious omelette and eggs Benedict (California style on each). Large diner size portions and fair prices ensures that we will return again at our next stop in Tacoma! The cafe is much larger than it appears from the outside and we enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and friendly staff.

Yelp
Very interesting cafe. You can tell it's a local favorite, and the staff is very nice. Both me and my husband were not blown away by the food, but the portions were huge and it wasn't bad. We were bummed that they had a walk through a very cute dinner area to where everyone was seated in the bar area. Looks like the dinner area may only be being used for take out? Idk it was just weird to eat breakfast at 9am in a bar.

Yelp
The ambience and the gentleman who served my mother and I were pleasant and accommodating. Unfortunately, the food was among the worst I've had in Tacoma. I ordered the fajita omelette, the eggs had had the flavor and consistency of artificial liquid eggs, simply laid over boiled vegetables and room-temperature chicken with a tofu-like texture. My mother ordered the chicken fried steak and couldn't get through more than a few bites; she found it completely flavorless and unappetizing. Perhaps it was just a bad day for the kitchen, But stellar service can only take you so far if the food is disappointing.

Yelp
Great place to go for breakfast. Jamie did an outstanding job as our server. We try to hit this restaurant 5 or 6 times per year even though it isn't close to home. Portions are generous, Food is well prepared and the crowd is a true reflection of Grit City. The building has a unique history and the memorabilia on the walls reflect much of it. Prices are more than fair. Miss it and lose.

Yelp
Needed a bite to eat before I caught my Amtrak train. Nice basic bar with huge breakfast menu (served all day long) as well as burgers and sandwiches. The wait staff were very attentive and super nice. We'll definitely go back if I find myself here again.

Yelp
Great food... good service... great price. The place was packed which was a key indicator that we needed to try it out. I asked the server (Rozalin was the name on the bill) for a recommendation and she was kind and helpful. Really happy with this choice!

Yelp
An establishment with such a rich history, all the way back to the 1920's. Be sure to check out the woodwork in the bar. A great menu with so many unique and traditional items. Service is great and they don't leave you waiting for ever to eat. They are accustomed to being BUSY. Great decor and fun music. Perfect Brunch local, just don't come all dressed up. It's low key, fun and delish.

Yelp
There are good and bad things about Alfred's. The building itself is very old so it has a smell to it, not unlike a public bathroom. The servers are very nice and helped us right away. The sodas tasted great and the food was good. I got the crab Benedict special and would rate it 7/10 because the crab was small bits and didn't taste awesome and had 2 shells in it. We also got two burgers and chicken strips. All the burgers except the Frisco burger listed cheese so my husband got that one because he's lactose intolerant. It came with cheese. It was insanely loud in there. The music is at a 10 and people are yelling to each other to communicate. They also charge 3.5% if you use a credit card.

Yelp
Service at the bar is great so far. Gotta good feeling. Ordered CFS & E of course. Wish I could have a bloody. The guy next to me is enjoying one. CFT&e ***** Service ***** Bar customer interaction ***** Bar tender ***** Quality ***** Stuffed, perfect meal. Looking forward to trying the bloody. Will be back next time in town.

Yelp
Visited today and had one of the worst cafe experiences in a while. We waited over 40 minutes for our food, weren't offered water, and when our order finally arrived, it was cold, incorrect, and missing items. When I pointed this out to our server, Jaqueline, she responded with, "you're fine, I'll get to it"... an unnecessarily rude and dismissive comment that really soured the visit. Mistakes happen, and long waits can be forgiven, but the lack of care, service, and basic courtesy was unacceptable. We still ended up paying for the meal, but honestly, the best part of the day was laughing about the whole disaster later with the team over at Dirty Oscar's. Safe to say we won't be back. Edit : 3.5% card charge is illegal!! Please spread the word.

Yelp
This little hidden spot is this shit. It has speed, service and superb taste! It has a warm and inviting atmosphere to it. And the food is delicious as well. I've only ordered breakfast items from here but I'm sure everything else is good as well.

Yelp
Chicken Fried Steak (2 eggs, hash browns, sub pancake First off the portion size was abnormally huge! I had enough for two breakfast which is uncommon for me because as a 6'2 225 male I can hold my own in front of a big plate but this plate was colossal. The lady who helped me out at the bar was kind and had some great insight on the menu. The pancake was prepared with love. The chicken fried steak country gravy and chorizo gravy combo was absolutely amazing. I was hesitant on the chorizo but it turned out with the perfect level of spice without drastically changing the dish. Eggs were soft and the potatoes O'Brien was a great intricacy.

Yelp
Been going here for a few years since Mom moved south to Tacoma. Every time I fly out to the PNW, I take my Mom out for breakfast to a few different joints in Tacoma and Seattle, and Alfred's has become our favorite spot for breakfast. I'm usually torn between the Chorizo gravy over biscuits or chicken fried steak, but the Tamal Omelet is also a winner. I'd probably be happy with a bowl of the chorizo gravy. Mom is pretty much married to the California omelet. The decor is pure Tacoma, and I hope they never change it. One of these trips I'll have to do lunch here. One sour note on our last visit--They recently changed their coffee to a weaker brand, because some people complained it was too strong...mistake. Why bother drinking coffee if it tastes weak? I fear for us all.

Yelp
We sat at the bar on this Friday (the 13th) morning. The service was very prompt, friendly & attentive. My Eggs Benedict was served quickly & it's the best I've had in recent memory! Overall a pleasant place, but hard-driving rock-n-roll was prominent (even at 9am).
google avatar

Sherry T.

Yelp
First trip to Alfred's, which turned out to be a great choice. The vibe there in the morning was upbeat, and all the employees were pleasant. Our server was amazing. I ordered the blueberry pancakes with bacon. The pancake was loaded with blueberries. Syrup was unnecessary. The bacon was solid. I'd like to return for lunch some time.

Yelp
Good food for a fair price. Great service and atmosphere. This is the sort of place to come often and bring friends. Food is really good and there's a lot of it. We had the biscuits with sausage gravy and the corned beef hash browns. Sour dough bread was awesome and it was so good to actually get pieces of corned beef and not the usual ground up stuff like the can. Eggs were perfect and the hash browns soft inside and crispy on the outside. The grill here must be well seasoned and clean. Drinks: coffee, Coke products and there is a bar. So cocktails or your heart's desire. Cleanliness: above average Service: above average Restroom: clean TIP: Go to the back where the main seating is. The front is for when it's just really busy.

Dominique J.

Yelp
My eggs Benedict was great... service was good as well. Environment was sub par there's a little smell but this is a staple in Tacoma!!!

Yelp
I haven't meant to Alfred's in ages! After staying the night at the casino, we decided to swing by and grab some breakfast. We both had eggs Benedict. I chose the vegetarian option, California Benedict, which comes with spinach, tomato, avocado, and of course the English muffin and hollandaise. It was fantastic! I'm not a potato fan, so I just tried one bite of the hash browns, but I'm pretty sure they were good for a hash brown person. The service was great. We got a bottle of sparkling wine and orange juice for mimosas. It makes about four. Super relaxed vibe. Great time.
google avatar

Richard B.

Yelp
Service was good but the food was just blah. Eggs were cold and there was random cheese in my hashbrowns! Hollandaise was also grainy and cold. Got a double Bloody Mary and it was weak, which is ridiculous for $14.
google avatar

Loretta H.

Yelp
I was in Tacoma and it was time for lunch! Alfred's turned out to be a fantastic place. It's a smallish place with booths and tables complete with a bar. Doesn't have the appearance of a chic diner, but the chef knows how to cook. The buildings appearance did not give the impression of fine dining. And yet, was a great experience. SO had a chicken fried steak topped with a special sauce. My understanding was that it was what had made the dish. My BLT was not your standard fare, the bread alone was a reason to come back again. BLT also included avocado slices. Those slices were perfectly ripe and made the sandwich. Since I do not live in Washington, I probably won't be visiting again very soon.

Yelp
After several days of cooking our own breakfast at the AirBNB while in town, we decided to venture out to eat. There are not a lot of options in the part of Tacoma we are staying, but Alfred's café popped up as one. We drove about 15 minutes and found the place. Plenty of free parking adjacent to the building and no wait-we went right in and found a table. The ambience here is definitely divey. The clientele look like they all may be regulars, folks that meet up with their pals for breakfast every day, looking to stay out of trouble. It took several minutes for our server to come over and offer drinks and menus, and then even longer for her to return to take our order. It wasn't busy; she was spending a good amount of time looking through receipts at the nearby register. We almost walked up to her to remind her that we were there, when she finally came back and asked what we were going to have. The food was ok-nothing remarkable. Serving sizes were generous, especially the hash browns. My wife ordered the french toast and said it was very bland and then ended up in the bathroom shortly after. Looking at other reviews, it seems this is hit and miss. Today, for us, was more of an air ball.

B K.

Yelp
Had an all day sporting event at the Tacoma Done. Headed to Alfred's for a break. Good dinner food. The staff and service were great.
google avatar

Kristina V.

Yelp
Thought we'd give it another try it'd been at least ten years, but I thought well maybe since it's still there it's better ‍ nope not at all only gave two stars cuz somehow they've stayed open. Had eggs Benedict and husband had bacon and eggs, way too much packaged hollandaise no flavor. The bartender was nice enough so of course still got a good tip, but we for sure won't go back just very unimpressive. Decor is horrible they could take some time to clean it up a bit, maybe that would help food to taste better.
google avatar

Ceivy M.

Yelp
Charming little spot in downtown Tacoma. It's a sit yourself kind of place, so don't hog the doorway. The waitresses are very friendly and personal, will make you feel like a regular even on your first visit. The food is alright, nothing to write home about, but priced well. I highly recommend anything with the chorizo gravy, that was amazing. Also, the toast, the white bread toast is a must have.

Roger L.

Yelp
The portions, service, cost were good. Loved the vibe. Would definitely go again. Liked that I could park right next to the restaurant.

William D.

Yelp
Food, service and atmosphere are good but the prices on the menu are for cash and the 3.5% price adjustment on the bill for a debit card is illegal. It is legal to charge fees for using CREDIT CARD because it costs the merchant more but debit card fees are minor and a merchant can only charge a set fee on them, not a percentage. You can do better Alfred's
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
First & Last time ever going here. I got the biscuits and gravy it was ok. However I got severe Food Poisoning from it ending up in the hospital.
google avatar

Franklin H.

Yelp
Surprise find in Tacoma while we were out here running errands for an upcoming wedding. Place doesn't look like much from outside but ok on the inside. The country fried steak I got was pretty great. Non-standard gravy with extra/different seasoning which I really liked. Just about everything with my breakfast was couple of notches above. Whomever is in the kitchen knows how to cook. Too bad I am not in the area otherwise this place would make it into my regular rotation. Recommended.
google avatar

Terri B.

Yelp
Great service, wonderful food, (try the chicken fried steak) and A1 bar service. It's a come as you are type of restaurant and welcomed all ages.
google avatar

Yelp
Great breakfast spot after shooting range! It was my first time here and the vibes were great. My boyfriend grew up coming here with his grandpa after range shooting next door, i look forward on carrying on the tradition!

Judith G.

Yelp
My favorite place for breakfast in Tacoma. Omelets are great and the servers are very personable and attentive.

Yelp
Client meetings, quick bite on the road or casual weekend breakfast with the family? This place has it down. Old school bar to boot. Good cocktails and top notch food. Been here at least 20 times. Rarely have the same dish and never disappointed. Come in for any occasion and you'll be met with great service and delicious food.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my second time coming to Alfred's. The place is not bad. Very clean and well kept. The staff is very friendly too. The food is decent but pricy. I mean $20 for a burger, fries, and soda. I will come here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Great for breakfast & lunch, large portions. As you enter thru the left side of this hundred year old bldg, there's a black & white tiled bar area that you walk by to walk back into the main dining room. Tables, booths & memorabilia fill the mirrored Galley room. The dark wooded bar you pass as you leave on the left side, leaves one feeling they've just left a popular saloon Enjoy, and don't forget to look for the Victorian Lady on the North facing side of restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
Today, I took my daughter on a train trip and decided to find a place to grab lunch. We chose this establishment due to its convenience to the station. Our order Burger dip - no flavor dry, even the dip. Philly cheese steak - no flavor and dry Kids chicken strips - heavily breaded my kid didn't eat it. Our sodas were nice and strong. Our server Ms. Laura was pleasant and helpful she had a conversation with my daughter. I may not return, but it was an adventure for the day.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Alfred's is okay. It's a good spot for breakfast/lunch if you're hung over. It's an odd menu with bar food and "home cooking" type selections. It's never great, but always consistent. I love the super-skinny fries! Decent Bloody Mary's, but they have come in a short glass on many occasions. I much prefer a pint glass. Service has always been pretty good. It has a very small parking lot, but there is street parking in the vicinity. Don't go out of your way to eat here, but it's worth checking out if you're in the area. Full disclosure, my wife seems to like it more than I do.
google avatar

Kera N.

Yelp
Alfred's was a chill place to go for breakfast. I like a good ol' fashioned breakfast most of the time and that's something Alfred's can deliver on. I got French toast with some tasty, crispy hash browns. Wait staff was efficient. They didn't bother with fluffy conversations, which I can understand at 8am. The cups of coffee were huge.
google avatar

Captain J.

Yelp
Been going there for years or since 1978. A great place to sit and dine with family and friends. A bar is attached if needed. But I prefer the foods. The flavors are awesome, the amount is plentiful. The employees.....where did they find such great people to cook the yummy meals and the nicest servers. My 4 kids are a handful but the servers make them happy with things to draw on while I wait my Greyhound trip to where ever. I have been going since 1978 and even way back then it was a perfect place for a work lunch. Coffee and French fries were my favorite for the boss and I study the job and figuring out things to do. The coffee is so good you just cant get enough. In my time, I have had just about everything on the menu several times. This is a great place for all.

Katie S.

Yelp
We come here for breakfast most Sundays. Cool atmosphere, quick service and good drinks! They are always busy , which is a good sign in my book. IMO you must get a side of hollandaise sauce with whatever breakfast item you order. I've never been a hollandaise fan until this place. Put it on your hash brown and dip your toast in it. Your welcome!
google avatar

Tanya H.

Yelp
So much food in a quirkyenvironment. Truly insane need-a-box-portions unless you are a 6'2" and working in the trades, which I am/do not. The sourdough was notable. Fairly good fare, 4/5. I dropped it another star because we sat for a while while our server just stood and other people were served first. All and all, pretty good.
google avatar

Srey S.

Yelp
My coworkers and I came here for lunch around 11:30. There were quite a bit of people in the restaurant side but the waitress was good at her job and managed to serve us quickly. I had the Meat Lovers Egg Benedict which came with sausage, Canadian bacon, and peppered bacon. The hollandaise sauce was extremely sweet to the point it left a salty finish in my mouth. The dish was literally drenched in the sauce. I couldn't finish the dish. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked. When I pressed into it, the yolk broke easily and flowed everywhere. I would have preferred my potatoes to be more crispy. I would not order this dish again the next time I come. The environment is pleasant. It is a little dark in there and the parking sucks but service is nice.

Yelp
I've been wanting to come in here for a long time but it's just not on my traveling route very often. I'm on a continuous trek to find the "Best of" lunch items in the area and I had heard they have a good Reuben sandwich here. This place is a classic! It is expansive. Their is a "diner" with tables and a long counter on the left when you enter and a larger dining room that opens to the bar area on the left. I found a dear rig a way and a pleasant server at my table immediately. I asked for a wheat beer, my usual, but she indicated they didn't have any at this time (indicating transition time) as I understood her. So I asked for ice tea which was great. The Reuben and fries were FANTASTIC! I was starved so I ate all of the sandwich but normally I would be taking a half home in a box. It held all the right properties of the perfect Reuben, pastrami, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island. The fries were the little skinny type and were cooked perfectly and plentifully I had heard that Alfred's is h see new management and they are doing a fantastic job so far. I now have a Best Reuben in South Sound winner. I would have given 5 stars but for the beer selection. I'll return soon when they have tap beers also.

Chad T.

Yelp
Great breakfast spot. Good food, fast service and large portions. I had the biscuits with chorizo gravy and the wife had the traditional breakfast. Both were great and we would definitely visit again!

Justin W.

Yelp
My daughter turned 21 today and went with her mother and a friend to get breakfast and mimosas. Alfred's would NOT accept their state driver's licenses! Will NOT be eating there ever again.
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
Been here a few times, submitted pics, now its time for a review. Alfred's is a no-frill cheap and easy diner. We like to come here for late breakfasts on Sundays, and so does everyone else in Tacoma. We've never had to wait, but service can get a little slow, or bring potatoes instead of hash browns. The food is slightly above average. The hash browns are OK, eggs were cooked fine, meat tastes like cheap, well seasoned ground beef. Not bad, but low quality. I really wavered between 3 and 4 stars, here's the breakdown: Venue 4 stars, value 4 stars, service (usually) 3-4 stars, food 3 stars, consistency 3 stars. Rounded down to a 3. I'm not saying "do not come here" by any means. If you're looking for high quality food, then perhaps look elsewhere. If you want something casual, cheap, with no frills, then absolutely come here.
google avatar

Yelp
Okay if any of you read my other reviews you'd be like girl. All you get is chicken fried steak and eggs and your bf just getting a veggie omelette. Sorry can't help it- it's delicious! We tried coming to this restaurant literally over a year ago and it was so busy we left. Well this fine Sunday morning I had my handsome and hungover bf with me and he wanted bfast. So we decided to come here again- and although it was yet again SO BUSY - it was worth it. I always order a plethora of scrambled eggs. And some restaurants give me legit 5 scrambled eggs and others give me a "spoonful" of the fake eggs and it's probably equivalent to 2. Well this place gives you what you ask for! My bf ate his food in .23 seconds and his hangover was gone. Magic. All in all it was tasty. The gravy for my chicken fried steak was flavorful. Thick.. but good. If you're looking for good food and a loud crew of customers this is your spot!

Yelp
Wow! What a find! I'm not familiar with some parts of Tacoma, I always seem to get lost on those streets by the train station, the way they overlap and intertwine always turn me around and next thing I know, I'm lost! This happened today and I ended up at a four way intersection looking right at Alfred's Cafe! By the looks of the parking lot, I thought, this place must have a great breakfast so why not try it out! So GLAD I did! Wow! It has its own parking! Always a plus for me! The building is huge and rustic looking with a mural of saloon barmaid on the outside drinking a martini! Real cool. As you walk in, to the left, you see old school red retro bar stool section. This section was empty because it's clear by the noise and clatter that all the action is inside to the right! The place is popping with people talking and laughing loudly! The walls have mirrors, TV's, and cool decor all over! The Vibe is casual and fun! Service is friendly and quick! Our waitress was sweet and pleasant so customer service was definitely 5 stars! The coffee cups are Huge. Coffee is delicious. If you order coffee, you'll get your moneys worth! Now to the food! I tried the Chicken Fried Steak with the CHORIZO GRAVY! Oh my word! That gravy would taste good on ANYTHING! Out of this world delicious! The portions are huge! I couldn't finish it all! Hash browns were delicious, eggs were cooked perfectly and the bacon is thick and delicious! You definitely get your money's worth! Overall, my experience here was incredibly interesting with tasty food! Scrumptious Deliumptious!

Yelp
Went for breakfast by myself and definitely enjoyed. Simple eggs, toast, bacon and hash browns. Was great! Great service and staff is on point. Felt very welcomed and comfortable. Good American comfort food.

Yelp
My husband and I were passing through the area and LOVED this cafe! Highly recommend. We ordered the chicken fried steak and a plate of pancakes and everything was incredible. Our waitress was very attentive & kind. Don't skip out on this spot!

Yelp
A delicious breakfast experience served alongside a drink on or off the rocks even if you prefer a beer the food is very tasty
