Huitlacoche Is a Celebration | Eater

"A Southwest Detroit specialty market that imported common Mexican produce to supplement local availability; while it made some ingredients easier to find, the items were described as not quite matching the quality of what the family remembered from Mexico." - Rosa María Zamarrón

Best Detroit Restaurant Tamales | Eater Detroit

"Algo Especial is excellent for picking up otherwise hard-to-find traditional Mexican ingredients — like dried pipian seeds, epazote leaves, and cactus paddles — perfect for those moments when you’re looking to broaden your repertoire in the kitchen or recreate Abuela’s home cooking. The shop is also known for its selection of distinctly fluffy tamales: pork with mole rojo, chicken in salsa verde, rajas and cheese, and sweet, bright-red strawberry or pineapple." - Serena Maria Daniels

Algo Especial is the best store in southwest Detroit for hard-to-find ingredients | Eater Detroit

"A Mexican-owned grocery in Hubbard-Richard that I view as a home cook’s oasis, Algo Especial has served the community for 42 years. Owner Martha Hernandez (speaking in Spanish through an interpreter) says she "takes very good care about the needs of the community," and you can see that in every crate overflowing with culturally relevant produce, dried chiles and beans sold by the bag-full, masa and lard by the pound, discs of Mexican hot chocolate, bottled hot sauces, imported clothing and beauty products, and dozens of rare loose-leaf teas and herbs. Customers from across metro Detroit, elsewhere in Michigan and even Canada know Hernandez and her relatives by first name and often greet staff with hugs; during the holidays people buy the shop’s fluffy, bountiful tamales by the dozen. Longtime clients also rely on its robust collection of teas and herbs for treating common ailments or spiritual cleansing, and local restaurants turn to Algo Especial for wholesale staples like cases of candy and commercial-sized cookware. Huriel Gonzalez-Hernandez told me the storefront was a Spanish-language record store in 1980 before his aunt and uncle took over when Raul was laid off from General Motors, and over time the family added VHS tapes of Spanish-language movies, cosmetics from Latin America, a full-service butcher counter, and prepared foods—choices driven by customer requests that keep people coming back first for the specific traditional ingredients that remind them of home." - Serena Maria Daniels

Been coming to this Mexican Grocery Store for over 30 years. Always the best experience here. They have all the spices and a huge variety of Mexican products at a fairly reasonably price. It's family owned and the Tamales are fresh and made daily. Call ahead of time in case they run out. The chicken and chile cheese is my favorite. Always will come back. Martha is the nicest lady. Parking on the street...but not bad at all. It's safe!

If you need a hard to almost impossible item or ingredient for your authentic Mexican dish, then you need to head to Algo Especial. This is a store that I have visited with my mom for those family recipes that needed that Especial ingredients and we could only find them here. Their tamales are the best in all southwest Detroit.

I love the amazing vast tea, spices and herbs selection! I can always find whatever rare ingredient I need here. They also have beautiful imported mexican garments and pretty things for the home! I always get friendly service too!

I bought the very-best plant pot that I have EVER had at this super market and I HIGHLY recommend to any indoor gardeners. They were selling these beautiful, tall terracotta pots, so I took one home and drilled a hole in the bottom. I have never seen a pot provide such wonderful drainage for my plants. Highly recommend. Photos are from 06/30/2022 and 03/28/2023

Google
I like this store. It's small, but packed with all kinds of imports of Mexico. I like that they have a butcher shop inside. First the most part they carry everything you want. I like herbal teas and they have a wide variety of teas and spices that only they carry.

Google
I am so disappointed. I love your tamales and always have. Drive from Plymouth Mi just to get the chicken green chili ones. However, this trip I bought a dozen to share with friends here who never tried. So inconsistent....far less chicken on them than use to be....just a bare smear...was more verde chili than chix at all. Some had no chicken to be seen...all corn masa and alot of it. Hesitant to come that far and with prices higher which right now is understandable product should be worth the price. Im sad😥ly disappointed. Maybe just a bad day. It was Wed 3/29/23. God bless🌿

Yelp
Algo Especial absolutely is "Something Special" in Mexicantown! I love the fresh produce and variety of lunch options available. It is a delight to have a fresh made lunch option on those days, I want to grab a quick health lunch option. I can also pick up a few items for my house like amazing cook ware. Thank you Algo Especial for your meeting my every need on a 30 minute lunch break.

Yelp
As has been mentioned before, this is a cute little grocery. I came for the tamales, and thought they were just ok. I tried the cheese and jalapeno, pork, and chicken. Overall, I thought all of the tamales could have used more filling, finding the layer of masa too thick. Of the three, I liked the jalapeno and cheese the best, though the filling could have used a touch more cheese.

Yelp
I would have never known about this small market if it were not for a Yelp search. There are more spices, seeds, and snacks than other larger markets in Mexicantown. I bought a half dozen jalapeño and cheese tamales for $6.99 that were piping hot and delicious. The service is friendly too. This is a must for anyone looking for tamales and Mexican ingredients.

Yelp
What a fantastic Mexican market. Very fresh fruit and vegetables like jalapeños, tomatillas, guava, cilantro. I visited today specifically for the homemade tamales. Pollo (chicken), carnitas (pork) but I will be back to try the jalapeños and cheese. Make sure to ask for sauce!

Yelp
Nice grocery selection. Good tamales. But it seems all the piñatas in Detroit are made by the same paper plate fabricator

Yelp
This is a small, quaint Hispanic grocery store with an excellent selection of spices, very good chorizo, and excellent, excellent tamales. I tend to favor the jalapeno and cheese tamales. Make sure you ask for the salsa to go with the tamales, though -- if you don't ask, you won't get any.

Yelp
quaint little grocery store that I would have passed by if not for the recommendations to try their tamales from the hourdetroit write-up Small little tamale counter near the back 1/3 of the store, next to the meat counter ****************** A hundred million stars for the chicken tamales with the green sauce. there are no words to do them justice and 4 dollars and change for a bag of 6 ( I ate them so fast I forgot to count how many were in the bag but I think six) The pork and beef in red sauce were good also but the real star was the chicken and heavenly green sauce

Yelp
Best fresh tamales made every day! (to go only). Great FRESH spices of all sorts. probably at least 50 different herbs and spices. Love this little place.

Yelp
Without a doubt, the best tamales in town! The store has a great selection and the owners are very nice and helpful. But again, I can't say enough about the tamales - they are the best you'll ever have!
