Alice Review - Bella Vista - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"In some ways, Alice in the Italian Market follows the standard operating procedure of a seasonal American restaurant. Oysters get dressed up for prom on a marble bar. People eat dry-aged beef next to monstera plants. Produce-heavy dishes act like seasonal highlight reels from Old McDonald’s farm. What makes this place stand out from every other Philly small plates paradise is its charcoal oven. Follow the smoke when you're ordering and you’ll have a perfectly nice meal at a perfectly nice restaurant in a neighborhood people visit all the time. Even Alice's room feels familiar: dimly lit, with the mechanical chattiness of an office Christmas party. The quiet couple in the tan booth next to yours may break their silence to agree in unison that “the salad is good.” And they'll be right. The salad is good. As the night goes on and the oversized rum-cava cocktails flow, Alice's atmosphere usually loosens up. Dates and groups of friends stare at the action in the open kitchen, where pots gurgle with onion consomme and steaks flip and char. Alice’s best dishes touch the fire. There's a very good octopus coated in chiles and bits of preserved lemon. Coal-roasted beets with sunflower butter briefly stop time. A burger on a challah bun soaks up all the drip from a dry-aged patty and melty cheddar. No matter how simple a dish may sound, Alice attempts big flavors in everything it does. Sometimes that works, like with the mushrooms glazed in almond miso or the crunchy fried chicken with caraflex cabbage and homemade hot sauce—admittedly not a grilled dish but still one of our favorites here.   Other times, Alice’s flavor swings will leave you like Avril Lavigne, wondering why they had to go and make things complicated. For every herby chermoula adding some needed zip to grilled prawns, there’s a hazelnut vinaigrette doing nothing more for broccoli than readying it for picture day. And, with multiple cuisine nods on the menu, you're likely to get whiplash jumping from grilled naan to foie gras to fried chicken to wagyu beef. If you’re not sure what your dining mood is, it’s easy to get lost in Alice's 22-item menu. That variety and ambition might work if every dish hit, but not every dish does. Instead, come to Alice with a plan to eat smoky, grilled food (and the fried chicken and the salad). That way you'll be set for date night or a group dinner featuring more char than you typically get at home. " - Candis R. McLean

Wow!!! This is my favorite meal of this trip! It was bustling and there was a wait-good signs! The spinach salad tasted like fall and the diavola pizza was simple but exquisite. The crust was thin and crunchy and the salami and cheese was paired perfectly!! Magnifico!!

The food is quite good. Pasta is Al dente. Pesto is excellent. The portions are a decent size. Ask the server about what the pasta that was made that day is, then order it. Server is a little overwhelmed. Maybe one of the people behind the counter can help? The music is too loud for the environment. I don’t want to hear “Paradise City” while eating dinner. It subtracts from the atmosphere. Prices are excellent. We had 3 drinks, apps, pasta, dessert and espresso. $122 with tip. Not bad.

Had this on my list of places to try, but I don’t know why. Glad I did, it was excellent. Pizza was outstanding. Get the Philly Special. We tried 4 different slices and all were good. The 4 cheese/mushroom was also outstanding. Finished with a piece of cheesecake and some gelato. Well done Alice.

I’ve been here twice and had two different pizzas and salads. Everything was absolutely delightful. The salads are fresh and well balanced between greens and unique ingredients. The pizzas have a fabulous crunch and generous toppings. The Philly Special was unlike any pizza I have ever had, although I think I preferred the Diavola. They call them “personal” pizzas, and I finished mine both times, but you could easily split for two people. Next time I will have to take a friend to share so I can leave room for dessert (the pastries and gelato look amazing, but I have always been too full to try).

Alice tries to be all- a by the slice place with seating, a gelato counter, a sit-down restaurant and a bar, and seems to integrate it all smoothly. After several visits for slices (sold by weight, so pick what you like in the size you like) we sat for service. Pizza came fast and was delicious, the same pizza you can order by the slice. We had a side of Broccoli Rabe, and it was not over cooked, seasoned with olive oil. As they will, we were asked if we had reservations, and we did not. We were seated, naturally, and while we ate (a half hour at most) the seating was never half full and the bar seating was perfectly empty. Great service, very good pizza, fair pricing, all told, perfectly delicious square pizza in Center City. Moral-check for reservations ahead if you have a party or a strong desire to not miss this place.

Been here a third time. It’s the same chain restaurant they have in Rome for pizza al taglio. They weigh each piece to get the final price. First time I’m actually going to the dining part, as it is separated from where you get the pizza. Since my family didn’t get the feel of pasta from the previous night’s dinner, we all ordered pasta. We had the amateurish, pesto, cacio e Pepe, and gnocchi. All tasted great. They actually used guanciale on the amatriciana for an authentic meal. The cacio e pepe tasted great. Although I think they used bucatini instead of tonarelli. Service was great. Our server was super attentive.

There was an event going on broad street, while I was walking around I passed by this restaurant it smelled so good! But I wasn’t in the mood for food, it was the gelato that caught my eye as I walked in. The lady at the counter was extremely friendly and polite, I order myself a salted caramel affogato which came out to be the perfect treat as I started my journey walking around the events in the city. I will definitely come back to try the food, since it smelled and looked so good.

My favorite place to stop by for a bite before an orchestra or broadway show. I can't speak for the sit-down portion, but the buy-per-weight pizza is amazing. My favorites are the pepperoni and the potato & sausage. Highly recommend getting it to eat there so it is warmed & crisped up in the oven. The staff is welcoming and polite. They also have water cups available.
