The 12 Best Restaurants in Homer and Halibut Cove, Alaska | Eater

"Alice’s Champagne Palace has the feel of a gold rush saloon. Rough-cut board walls and corrugated tin feature prominently in the décor. On one level it’s your basic neighborhood watering hole, but if you look closer, the usual pub fare of burgers, ribs, and cheesesteaks is simple stuff done well and provided in ample portions. It’s the kind of food that a bar serves to keep its regular clientele coming back again and again. Try the Reuben — it’ll make you want to move to Homer permanently. The atmosphere is spacious, even when it’s crowded, and the stage up front is a great place to hear local music." - Kris Farmen

Great selection of draft beers. There is also stage for bands. You can pay by card and you can even pay on table by scanning qr code. The restaurant has good atmosphere and service was also very good and friendly. I didn't have any food so I cannot judge that. Parking right in front of the restaurant.

I loved the music playing and the atmosphere. Great beer list on the wall. We had the mixed salad (fantastic, especially the blueberry dressing), halibut fish and chips, and the bacon burger. The halibut was perfect, but the burger and fries were slightly overcooked, as was the bacon. I would gladly eat here again though.

Google
They have a great variety of food which is all done well. Usually pizza places have the best pizza and burger places have the best burgers but everything I've tried on Alice's menu is really good; Pizza; burgers; sandwiches; and the onion rings are great. Their fish and chips is next on my list.

Google
The food was okay, my boyfriend got the fried chicken sandwich and it was burnt and very very dry, I ordered the fish and chips and got my food way after everyone else got there's. My daughter got the chicken strips and my son got the Rachael sandwich they both were satisfied with there food. We also ordered a side of Buffalo wings which were ok. Don't order the cheese steak sandwich it's basically all oinions and peppers.

The staff (shout out to Teddy) had great vibes. The music was great, the jokes were funny, the management was awesome. Reasonably priced & good ambiance. We liked our first visit so much that we went back a second time in the same day.

Alice's Champagne Palace is one of those "It is what it is, so don't expect it to be more than what it is..." type places. If you go in with this in mind, you'll enjoy the food, service, and overall experience. If you go in wanting it to be something more than what it is, you may end up disappointed and you should stick to AJ's or one of the more upscale places. It's a place where the locals go to eat and socialize after a long day of work. You'll see dock workers and deck hands. Construction workers and local businss owners. You'll definitely see a lot folks in their Xtratuf boots and they're not just worn for show like they are in other parts of the state. Many go in with a group to grab a "bag of burgers and fries" which is one of the best deals in town. We've had the bag of burgers once before, and they were really good burgers and tasty fries! This time, we had pizza and chicken strips. Both were very good. Something we'd go back for, definitely. Best of all, we learned about a local celebrity working here as a bartender. His name is Orion Donicht. He's written some music, toured the state playing live gigs at one point, and he's also written a few books, detailing his journeys. When an unexpected open mic night got going, the guy doing the guitar playing and singing invited Orion to join him on stage. They sang a few songs together, which turned out to be very entertaining. We're still not sure if it was a planned event or if the original dude just went up there and started playing lol Whatever it was, we had fun listening. All in all we had some good food and had a good time listening to the music, whether planned or not. Also I plan to check out some of Orion's literature after hearing his story. I see one of his books is available on Amazon unlimited , about his journey to Alaska which he spread his father's ashes along the Alaska Highway. Reviews have me intrigued, so I'm going to give it a read. All in all we'd definitely go to Alice's Champagne Palace again for sure.

Google
I have eaten fish and chips at Alice's before and they were always good. Recently I had the fish and chips there and they ranked at an all time low. The rockfish was old, over cooked, and the pieces were sparse. The fries were dried out and heavily salted. All this for $24.00. If this is the best fish and chip meal an eatery in Homer Alaska can serve, sitting on the shores of Kachemak Bay, with fresh fish delivered to the dock daily, they are off my list. I know it's a bar, but if they can't do better they should remove fish and chips from their menu.

Google
Chill, relaxed environment. Always good music, fun trivia, and good halibut fish & chips. The service is a bit laid back but it can get packed in the evenings so I get it. Honestly just a nice place to grab a beer and some chips in Homer. Also recommend their bag o burgers for a group- good value and the burgers ain't too bad either.

Yelp
Perfect place for a burger after a long day on the water. You'll be welcomed in with a smile and a cold beer. Lots of great food options, but our go to is always the bag of burgers. It comes with a mountain of fries and delicious burgers filled to the brim of the bag. Place can get busy, and parking lot can fill up, so get here a bit before dinner for the good parking and quicker service.

Yelp
1 open table when we walked in, a few needed to be cleaned, so we decided to sit at the bar. Glad we did!! Orion was so energetic and super enjoyable to be around. His service was great, very attentive. Pork rinds and cheese were pretty good. Sirloin was cooked perfectly. Now..... the Pork chop..... THAT was SO DELICIOUS and very cooked well! Also a Large selection of beers to help your thirst.

Yelp
Fun place for local music, grabbing a drink, or one of their specials (this week was fresh Dungeness crab). This place is unique and has very friendly staff. You can tell they feel comfortable being themselves, and the crew of regulars were all friendly and welcoming the whole week we were in town. We had pizza to go one evening, and they definitely didn't skimp on the toppings.

Yelp
Don't let the champagne name fool you, this is a casual place with EXCELLENT bar food and plenty of options for adult libations! Hand patted burger patties, homemade pizza, chicken sandwich, philly cheesesteak were all good! Server Orion was engaged and funny, excellent all around service! This is a great little find in Homer with comfort bar food and seafood options also. Great change of pace from the tourist traps on the spit!

Yelp
Always love Alice's. I got pretty excited to take friends from down south. I bragged on the serving sizes, etc. well it's been a while. We ordered burgers, halibut, Rueben. All good stuff. We got lots and lots of fries and the entre was pretty tiny. Either way. The food is good, the staff is super nice and the palace has a good Alaska vibe.

Yelp
Friendly service and with a smile The bartender/waitress was up front when saying it was only her and the cook so we needed to be patient and patient we were! Party of 6- all satisfied customers. Three ordered sliders, a po-boy, popcorn shrimp and fish and chips- and zero complaints all tasted good and we agreed we would go back. A lot of restaurants were closed when we went here, just that time of day so it was busy and again- the server was still smiling. Inside is more of a rustic, cowboy theme with a dance floor and disco ball. It may get a little rowdy later in the night. It's a place the locals go, so you know the food is good.

Yelp
This is a longtime local hangout for the younger adults that like to drink, smoke weed, listen and dance to loud live and recorded music. If you fit in that demographic Alice's is for you but the food is definitely not a restaurant that you would take your family to unless it is breakfast or lunch. Even then the food is over priced and mediocre at best. We stopped there for lunch on a Tuesday when visiting Homer. I have been to Alice's during the evening to late hours many times 70's and 80's and didn't realize they served food. I admit that my views and experience are based on past history except for our recent visit. Although this visit was in the midday it gave me the feeling that the daylight did not change it for the better. I did notice that it had been remodeled somewhat and the bar was smaller and relocated opening more room for table, chairs, a ban stand and a very rough dance floor. They have an upstairs area with game tables and a railing over-looking the dance floor. The food was expensive for the quality and amount. The three Halibut Specials were $25 each. The Halibut was processed and breaded like you get in the grocery store. The fries were crispy and flavorful. The Steak was small but good and smothered in what appeared to be thick brown gravy and topped with a fried egg. The iced tea was the highlight of the meal. They have a full service bar serving all open hours and as the name implies they have several signature Champagne Cocktails. The waitress was friendly and efficient. She was busy serving what appeared to be mostly a local lunch crowd. Large free parking lot but be careful parking and walking in it as it is hilly and rough. If you want a lunch in Homer there are numerous better places to go.

Yelp
Nice music venue, friendly people, good drinks, nice layout. Didn't get a chance to try the food so can't comment on that.

Yelp
First, a couple notes: It says they close at 8. That's not really true. They stop serving food at 8ish. Our server said they go with the tempo of the day. If it's slow, food stops at 8. If it's popping, the kitchen stays open. Once the kitchen closes, the bar stays open. So come on by for a drink after 8. Second, the review: Our server was on point. Lots of checking in. Great humor. Scrappy without being awkward. Awesome! The burger was everything you want in a burger: juicy and hot, crunchy lettuce, extra pickle (cause I asked) and a solid burger to bun ratio. I asked for a side of ranch. They have the GOOD ranch. If you know, you know. It's a full bar. They have lots of Alaska craft beer options. They still have the bag of burgers special. If I had one complaint, it's the level of salt. I don't know if it was the bacon or added salt to the burger patty, but I will ask about that next time.

Yelp
Ryan the bar tender was amazing. Long live RhubarbraStreisand, best drink ever. Food was fine also.

Charlotte B.

Yelp
Fun spot. Fries amazing. Burger a little dry and overdone. Service with a huge smile and very helpful!

Sheena W.

Yelp
A must try! Food is great, if you're looking for a good place to let your hair down relax and have a drink come here!! The atmosphere is chill and super friendly!

Yelp
Our first meal in Homer Alaska and it did not disappoint. Great service from Linda! We were tired and hungry and really wanted the Smoked Chicken, which at first we heard they were out of but Linda went and asked and they said if we were willing to wait they were coming off the Traeger in 30 minutes. Sold! I nice cocktail, friendly service. Yummy chicken hot off the grill. Immediately felt like home. Still drinking out of our pint glasses! Thanks!

Brian R.

Yelp
The food was great! Service was great. The music was too loud. We could not speak to each other across the table. A great spot to get a great meal. Just not to chit chat. lol

Yelp
I've been going to Alice's for years now. The raciest part is the chandeliers. Decent menu for a bar/palace (burgers/apps/fresh cut fries). Price is on point for the location and being locally owner and operated. Looks like a old hangar or barn but the vibes are great! Service was awesome considering the time and the tap selection isn't small

Yelp
The reviews saying this is where the locals spend their time?? They're absolutely correct. We were planning to meet a friend who lives in Homer for brunch, and she suggested Alice's - I was a bit skeptical, but hey, what do I know?? Clearly nothing. This is THE BEST breakfast or brunch in town, hands town. We arrive to a slow morning start for the dining room (same, Alice, same) but by the time we left, it was clear this is where everyone stops by before heading out for their day. After ordering mimosas, we decide to simply order the entire left side of the menu and share it all family style. This was an excellent decision, and I like to start my days with mimosas and good decisions. All 5 plates arrived simultaneously and I was so overwhelmed with tasty goodness, I couldn't decide where to start. The breakfast grilled cheese was perfectly grilled, toasty brown and ENORMOUS - big enough to share and take some home. Stuffed full of bacon, cheese and scrambled eggs, it was my idea of the ideal marriage of breakfast and lunch, better known as my favorite meal: brunch. Next up, we had the belgian waffle topped with homemade custard, fresh berries and whipped cream. Get in on this one early, as the custard is melting to provide the perfect syrup for the crispy, vanilla belgian waffle - this is dessert in breakfast form and I'm here for it. We couldn't pass up a chance to try the traditional scrambled eggs, toast and breakfast potatoes, which were seasoned well with the right amount of savory spice to compliment the fluffy eggs. Being originally from Texas, I was skeptical about their biscuits and sausage gravy but that doubt was quickly put to rest. My mother (also a Texan, in addition to being a good southern mama) liked the sausage gravy so much she raved about it to my grandmother on their Sunday afternoon call. Paired with a fluffy, buttermilk biscuit and that's about as high a compliment as I can share. Top all of this off with an extra side of breakfast sausage adnn crisp bacon, for good measure. We absolutely gorged ourselves and I felt no guilt for it, because food this good deserves it. I would be remiss to not mention the VERY GOOD sauce (trademark?) that should be used liberally on everything, from the eggs to the breakfast grilled cheese and also the bacon. I asked, but they're not bottling it for retail... YET. In short, don't miss this gem of a spot for brunch - it's the hands down best in town. Cheers!

Yelp
This local place has a lot of charm! We had beverages, fries & sandwiches- all tasty. We lucked into a live music fundraiser for Ms. Alaska at lunchtime! So much fun! Server was very personable & attentive!
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
The food is great, the staff are quick and courteous, and the beer selection is worth checking out. We have been here four times as out of state visitors to see live music and have enjoyed it every time. The burger and cheesesteak are awesome!

Chas P.

Yelp
If your in homer I suggest the 6 burger and 2lb fry bundle!! Absolutely fantastic!!!! $40 fed 4 adults with leftovers. The bar is great as well with fantastic employees!!!
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
Best beer selection I found in Homer. I'm surprised that I'm saying that the pork rinds with cheese was so much better than expected. Although the cheese was essentially cheese whiz, having the pork right out of the fryer was a new one for me. Yum.

Kurt P.

Yelp
The place has a rustic charm and excellent service, but it is a bar with food. Since they offered two levels of fish and chips, my wife and I both opted for the higher priced halibut. They so much tasted like fishy-fishy fish sticks that I asked our waitress whether she made a mistake and gave us the wrong order. They were also slivers, over-battered and over-cooked. I forced mine down since starving after 11 hours in a storm fishing for halibut but my wife could only eat one bite. The sweet potato fries were slivers as well. I have enjoyed halibut over 150 times in my 64 years and have caught over 150 pounds of filets and cheeks. Alice's won the prize for the worst halibut ever served.

Tiffiny D.

Yelp
Took a road trip to Homer to celebrate my friends birthday. She chose Alice's Champagne Palace to eat at for lunch, which ended up being the worst part of our entire Homer experience. The place was empty, should have given us a clue, but it's not quite summer so we didn't think much of it. I ordered fish and chips, assuming because we were in Homer Alaska, I thought I'd get fresh fish, nope. Instead I was served greasy overly fried pre frozen inedible garbage that resembled something from your local supermarket frozen foods section. One bite and I had to spit it out, it was disgusting and not fit for human consumption. My friend ordered a simple burger, but it was served in a pool of old grease and after one bite was determined to be inedible as well. After addressing our concerns with the manager he agreed to knock off the price of only one of the inedible meals. He seemed irritated and unapologetic towards the horrible quality of food. Worst experience I've ever had in Homer. Please don't waste your money on this place like we did.
google avatar

Erika D.

Yelp
The ambiance is warm, old-time bar feel but family friendly. Food is RIDICULOUSLY good! I ordered the Rachel Turkey Sandwhich and a Tito's and soda and my husband ordered the 1/2 smoked chicken with coleslaw. Laura served us and had the most amazing personality and customer service!! Just a quick turn from the main drag! You won't be sorry! The sandwiches are the best!
google avatar

Gretchen B.

Yelp
It was okay for a lunch break. The rest of our party enjoyed the beers with their lunch. Nothing outstanding but one of the only places that were open on a Wednesday. Bit smoky inside from the kitchen. I'd like to try the entertainment at night sometime
google avatar

Yelp
1st time to Homer. Had to do some work at the hospital. This was day 1 of 3. Great bar atmosphere. Great food and beer selection. Definitely returning
google avatar

Carolyn J.

Yelp
This place is great. Cool frontier atmosphere, great drinks, solid food and happy servers. Orion the bartender is awesome. He's fast, super friendly, and charming. Plus, he whips out his guitar periodically and sings in your face. Love him. He wrote a book that's highly rated! Buy it. This place has been around for decades and it's clear why. Go there.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Stopped fir lunch and had pork sandwhich and fries. good food at reasonable price, and waitress was super friendly and prompt. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Jill M.

Yelp
I'd say this is where the locals go for live music on a Saturday night. Plenty of seating, fun band playing mostly country music, large dance floor, cold beers and you battle with locals for the bartenders attention. Nothing royal or fancy about this "Palace" no dress code, just casual and a good time!

Rebekah S.

Yelp
There at 1:00 on 8/19/22. The woman who served us was way too loud. Her voice was scratchy and could be heard through the large dining room. She was nice and a great waitress, but needed to be aware her voice made dining irritating. The salad with vinaigrette dressing had baby Fruit Flys circling me until I gave up and pushed the plate away, unable to finish.

Ornery O.

Yelp
Went here at the recommendation of a friend after getting into town... looked cozy enough but unfortunately they were poorly staffed... took 15 minutes to get a menu and never got in a drink order.. after 30 minutes of sitting we went down the road to get some grub. Unfortunate experience, but if you can't staff, don't be bussing tables and promising "I'll be right back". Just tell the customer you're overwhelmed and I won't waste either of our's time. Maybe next time.

Barbara E.

Yelp
A group of us were there last week because of Ellis Paul's song called Alice's Champagne Palace. We had been on a cruise with him, Laurie MacAllister, Don Conoscenti, and Darryl Purpose. While it was special to be there because of this, the burger I had the first night was delicious as was the meat pizza the next night. And our server was wonderful! Great place to go in Homer!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
We were looking for a place to get lunch and stumbled onto this place. It didn't look promising when we pulled into the parking lot as we couldn't find the front door. Decided to give it a shot. We are at the bar. The bartender was awesome. Very friendly and gave us recommendations. We had the 1/2 chicken and the Cuban sandwich. Both were as advertised. Many locals and a few tourists. We plan to go back tonight for live music at 9.
google avatar

Susan T.

Yelp
Six hungry tourists hit on Alice on a Sunday evening. Have you ever tried red jalapeno poppers? Well they are fabulous. And so are the wontons. Wontons come with dum dum sauce, which we loved with the poppers, too. Friends got an enormous salad to share. Apparently pizza is a new menu item, but we loved both the pepperoni and the meatza styles. Winner of the night was a ginormous burger. It was what all burgers should be in appearance and flavor and totally stole the show. There's live music, often, and it's posted on the board out front. You won't be sorry you stopped
google avatar

Eammon B.

Yelp
The Champagne Palace is a must visit while in Homer. The ambiance is truly unique and you'll probably leave with a story or two. This place has the best beer tap list in town. They carry beers from all over AK as well as some gems from other states. The food is pretty standard burger/sandwich/fries fare, and it will fill you up in a pinch, but I wouldn't recommend coming here if being fed is your only reason.
google avatar

Krista M.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of dining at Alice's Champagne Palace while in Homer per the recommendation of our Couchsurfing host! We walked her from her house and worked up quite the appetite. Luckily I was not disappointed by the food selection or service! Our waitress, Jill G., was great... very friendly and appeared to truly care about our trip to Alaska and our experiences Couchsurfing. It's pretty cool to have a waitress who not only takes your order but spends time talking to you as well! Anyway, both my friend and I ordered the same thing - the Pulled Pork Sandwich with salad. The pork was great, perfect amount of BBQ sauce as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the coleslaw that it was topped with as well. We also split an order of sweet potato fries... cooked to perfection. I thought the Kenai Brewing Company's Honeymoon Heffe complimented the sandwich and fries perfectly. Overall, great service, good food, pretty cool atmosphere. I never would have thought a "Champagne Palace" would essentially be a barn! I was disappointed they didn't have the hockey games on. I'd love to come back sometime to check out the live music!
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Great service and fun atmosphere! Consistently open. Turn the bar tender loose and let him pick a drink to make for you. Also, beg him to play his guitar and sing for you. It's worth it! Always the best service even if understaffed and super busy.
google avatar

Tracy H.

Yelp
A local recommended Alice's. It very rustic, clean, lots of seating, good beer choices, fast service. Lots of local presence. Menu limited but Rueben was good. Lots of corned beef and lovely marble rye
google avatar

Andrew H.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a craft beer, a bite to eat, see a band, and hang with locals. Some of the best beer taps in town. Unfortunately, when we were there the menus weren't really up-to-date. The first 3 beers I ordered were no longer on tap. I struck out! If I were a local, I'd probably live here. When I visit, I go here to feel like I live here.

Nancy A.

Yelp
Came for dinner and had the fish & chips. We were expecting halibut or cod but got haddock, which was okay. Came back the next morning for breakfast. The poor waitress was overwhelmed and after 15 minutes with no coffee or service, we left. Very unfortunate because they advertise that they gave the best breakfast in town.
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
Fun rustic atmosphere. Friendly server, excellent food and local beers available. Would go back!

Jonna C.

Yelp
We stop in for a bag of burgers whenever we're in town. We love this place! Great ambiance and the music is always good.

Samantha M.

Yelp
Laura did an excellent job taking care of the very full restaurant last night! Food was pretty good too.
google avatar

Raymond G.

Yelp
This is a pretty cool place to hang out. They were having a trivia night when we came in the to have a drink so we joined in at the end. It was a pretty lively event and everyone seemed to be having fun. There is a good amount of seating available. Nothing fancy but good for groups. It kind of feels a bit divey but is a large for that full feel. They serve wine here from the bear creek brewery which is pretty cool and they do serve beers on tap that are not in the folder menu. We got some fries and their Mac and cheese with pork in it. The Mac and Cheese was good, nothing too fancy. The sweet potato fries were tasty but the amount they gave us was not very fair for the price. I think there kitchen must have been backed up that night because we did wait a while to get our food. All in all this was a cool place to hang out with some friends. They do have a stage which looks like it could be good for some events.

Michael T.

Yelp
Dive bar experience. Another local place in Homer. I appreciate that they host bands and have plenty of tap beer options for enthusiasts. The only pitfall I have against this place was that the cellar where they store all their kegs had construction occurring during dining which made it a little loud and obnoxious. Fast and cheap food.

Matthew S.

Yelp
Seems as if they were a little understaffed, which a lot of places are here. That being said, the food wasn't very good, the ranch and ketchup were inedible, and the beer was warm
google avatar

Trudy B.

Yelp
Well after my good friend said we had to try this place we had high expectations. Maybe that was the problem. No, it wasn't...it was the food. We ordered the champagne burger and Mac n cheese. The burger had no flavor and the Mac n cheese was oily and tasted like bbq. Now we did have the pulled pork on it but it just lacked anything good to it sadly. The environment was cool and the waitress was very sweet so I want to give kudos where its due. The food was terrible.
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
I love this place! Friendly and funny staff. Great food and great drinks. Trivia night is a blast. I highly reccomend
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
There was only one guy serving everyone on the floor and serving the bar. But he was all smiles and dancing and just such a delight! They had so many beer options on tap and great beer that it was hard to choose. Overall great and will definitely be coming back.
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Alices.....its hard to say. I love the atmosphere and such. The food is good sometimes. But honestly, I can NEVER get behind the prices. For example...burgers used to be 13.95 base price with 8oz patties. Then they switched to 15.95 base price with 6oz patties. The chicken fingers used to be 14.00 with hand battered chicken, now they are 14.00 with store bought frozen strips....which a server acknowledged and then proceeded to serve with a skimpy amount of fries.... When I worked in a restaurant, if someone expressed a less than satisfactory experience, we gave them extra fries or something like that....at Alice's, they pretty much tell you to suck it up and give in to the captive market experience
