There are a lot of different types of Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, and each type has its own place and serves a purpose. Alice's Restaurant is the perfect example of White People Chinese food that I absolutely love. Nothing super authentic, but something very comforting, for a certain audience, and time in the world. My husband and I really felt like this cuisine one night, and so glad we found it in this sleepy Noe Valley neighborhood.
I can't remember everything we ordered, but do remember the Hot & Sour soup, Alice's Chow Mein, and sesame beef. All were great dishes!!! Very solid, loved the thick-noodle chow mein, that they don't always have at Cantonese style Chinese restaurants.
I loved the ambiance of the restaurant too - really cool windows, almost floor to ceiling, just beautiful. The whole restaurant was very clean too. Service was very nice, spoke perfect English. They even plated the tables with forks.
At the end of the meal, I really loved that they gave us the check with fortune cookies. Also, these weren't some weird processed ones that were made in China, but rather, fresh, local ones from Chinatown. WOW. I asked the waiter too where they got it from, and he told me "somewhere in Chinatown" - then BROUGHT OUT the box that they came in, to show me the exact place. Now that is service!!!!
Obviously people like my Chinese grandparents wouldn't approve of, but as a 3rd generation ABC (American Born Chinese), I thought this was a wonderful restaurant, can't wait to return.
