6 Hotels That Feel Like Private Art Galleries - AFAR

"This property blends modern skyscraper views and open-plan bathrooms with local traditions and harmonious design: geometric floor tiles reference nearby Shikumen mansions, calm earth-toned spaces offer a retreat, and guests can join local customs like afternoon tea and view locally crafted artwork. A focal piece is the 17-foot-tall Gathering tree by Oscar Wang, whose stainless-steel trunk and branches with ceramic leaves anchors the fourth-floor lobby ringed by walkways and a small pond, creating a peaceful, immersive centerpiece." - AFAR

Well curated and cohesive interior design. Detail oriented and hospitable staff. Excellent amenities and facilities for its location. Everything was in good working order. Special mention to Cameron who managed our stay experience, assisted us with difficult reservations and provided useful recommendations during our stay. Highly recommend Alila Shanghai

We had a wonderful 5-night stay at the Alila Shanghai. The property is new and a calm oasis in the middle of Shanghai. There's a very unique elevated garden area close to reception. For tourists, it's very well located, and there are many transport and food options within a few minutes' walk. The rooms are really comfortable and extremely quiet. Staff was attentive. The quality of breakfast was great (though there are also many amazing places to get breakfast nearby.) Would definitely come back!

I stayed at the Alila with my kids for three days as Hyatt Globalists and we felt pampered and taken cared of exceedingly well. The staff is very attentive to your needs and the breakfast was delicious. The property and rooms we booked were beautiful and modern. My kids loved their stay. I have basic to intermediate knowledge of Mandarin but the majority of the staff can speak English well. We had no problems with communication. We will definitely stay at the Alila next time we return to Shanghai.

The Alila Shanghai location is one of my favorite Hyatt stays and definitely is the best Shanghai stay I've ever personally had. The spa was incredible as well (worth going out of your way to experience). The staff as well was extremely helpful, personalized (without being invasive) and the overall experience was best-in-class. I will plan to stay here whenever I'm back in Shanghai.

It is a splendid hotel with amazing views and very very advance with technology of comfort. It was as if like having trip and your house with you and a personal butler that accommodates your needs during your stay. If you want to experience class.. experience a stay in Alila Shanghai. My stay was fabulous. And Joy our personal assistance able to gave you all information u need and willing to provide you in the short possible time about it. If you introvert and find it hard to communicate or reluctant to speak to someone regarding of the hotel amenities, joy, she is just a we chat away from all the information we need. And checking out.... it was smooth and no need to be physically tgo to counter and all is so smooth. It is a convenient place to stay also. I and delighted I manage to find such a nice and classy hotel. No regrets. Thank you Joy Epler Argon who helped me making this stay to be memorable. See you again!!

Alila is the urban oasis right in the middle of Shanghai. It’s extremely well located and has beautiful facilities. ||||I had a studio room and was by far the biggest room I had in Shanghai - which was beautifully laid out.||||In addition, the staff is extremely helpful and proactive in making your stay as memorable as possible. I would like to specifically thank Joy for taking such good care of me - I felt extremely welcome and she was always available and reaching out proactively in case of questions or doubts.

Frankly speaking I didn't have high expectations for this property. There were a ton of negative reviews from last year when it first opened, and my stay at Park Hyatt Shenzhen left me with a less-than-favorable impression of Hyatt hotels in general. Needless to say, there were some concerns and doubts about the hotel before my stay, particularly so when the hotel didn't reach out to me for the pre-arrival checklist, despite reading multiple reviews claiming that the hotel does it. Although in hindsight, this was probably due to the fact that we booked this via Amex FHR, and the agent did not pass on our contact details to the hotel. ||There were a ton of guests on our check-in day, but the bellhop still enthusiastically greeted us, helped with our luggage and escorted us to the lobby above. We booked a Studio room and was pleasantly informed that we were upgraded to the City View Suite, despite Amex letting us know beforehand that this room type is not upgradable. The room wasn't ready when we arrived, but the front desk was incredibly helpful, constantly updating us on the latest status, and showed us around the property while we waited. They also informed us that since our room was just being prepared, welcome fruits and birthday decorations would be delivered to our room shortly, which couldn't have been different to the confusion during check-in at Park Hyatt Shenzhen. ||They went with a wabi-sabi inspired design in the guest rooms which I really enjoyed, and our room had a generous view of the Shikumen houses directly below and the skyscrapers in the distance. There was a sliding door that separated the bedroom and the living area, while simultaneously being connected through the washroom, and walk-in closet. Since both of our birthdays were nearby, they sent us not one, but two cakes on the house, and guests will also enjoy a daily restock of the complimentary minibar. We were also provided with two eye masks, earplugs, and pillow sprays at turndown, which was very thoughtful as most hotels will only provide one set of turndown gift despite the double occupancy. Light-blocking was excellent and we had a good night of sleep on our first night. We also didn't hear any noises from the renovation site directly below the hotel that other guests complained about. There were however, some problems on our second night: there was a water-dropping noise in the middle of the night that was super annoying, and I was woken up by the TV in the living room, which magically turned on by itself. ||Breakfast was extraordinary, offering a semi-buffet and à la carte menu with a wide selection of Shanghainese specialties. The pastries were also excellent in both variety and quality. A la carte items were served very quickly, which was very accommodating for someone with zero patience like me.||Our stay was short and we were mostly outside, so we didn't get to fully enjoy the hotel's facilities. The hotel had a cozy living room and library on the lobby floor, but they were infested with influencers taking photos, which wasn't to our liking and we prefer hotels that are more private. ||Alila Shanghai blew it out of the water and I really enjoyed being pleasantly surprised. I'll definitely be back.
