I just pulled a couple of Dungeness crabs out of the pot and broke off a couple of steaming legs and ate them. Man, there are few things as good as fresh, sweet crab straight out of the pot. My recipe: add crab boil and salt to the water; boil uncovered for six and a half minutes per pound timed from the water returning to a boil; cool slightly under running water; EAT!
So, why do I make the trip to the City to get crabs from Alioto Lazio? Really its just one thing: they handle them so well. You can go to Ranch 99 and get a crab and its fine, but its also crowded into an aquarium full of brown water where it can't help but absorb some of the taste of its dying brethren. Or you can go here where they have really big (I think the tank area is 12 feet by 12 feet) shallow tanks filled with clean, filtered, well aerated water. The crabs are very much alive when you get them home and they taste just out of this world!
They also sell cooked crabs here, though I've never tried those, and they do sell crab meat, which I have purchased and its very good, too. They take credit cards. They ship crab anywhere in the states that FedEx will overnight to, though the shipping is not cheap.
Its great to be able to buy these crabs again!
