Spud Fish & Chips - Review - West Seattle - Seattle - The Infatuation

"One of the best things about this Ivar's-owned seafood shack on Alki is all of the old pictures and maps hanging on the wall showing how West Seattle looked back when the restaurant first opened in 1935. A lot has happened since then, like the second story they added (oh, and also the internet). But the very best thing about Spud? Their fried halibut, which is worth paying a few extra dollars for. The fish is super flaky and tender with a well-seasoned, crispy batter. Plus, oftentimes you’ll get absolutely massive pieces, which feels like winning the lottery, only your prize is delicious meaty halibut instead of eternal wealth. Come here for a quick lunch, or bring out-of-towners to eat seafood and look at the Seattle skyline if Marination Ma Kai is slammed." - Carlo Mantuano

Google
Super casual spot with parking in the back. Really amazing fish and chips. Loved their coleslaw once I added a touch of malt vinegar to it. Coleslaw was crisp and lightly dressed, not mayo soup so extra points for that. Chowder was delicious too. They load you up with tartar sauce for fish n chips. Fries were crispy and withstood vinegar and salt dressing. Definitely would eat there again.

We love getting fish and chips from Spuds at Alki beach. Love the mini statue of liberty too. The beach is beautiful but is a bit rocky and has sea weed.

Google
Love the food, the service and the views! I’ve seen a lot of reviews about the fries, however mine were excellent, natural cut style and were not overdone nor soggy or greasy. 2 fish and fries meal was filling and you get a large portion of everything. I recommend upgrading to the 4oz Tartar sauce for an extra $0.50. It’s well worth it. The Tartar sauce is amazing as well, probably the best I’ve ever had really. I will definitely be back, loved everything about the experience!

Google
Parking is in back. Food is good, atmosphere is relaxed, with view of the bay. Tables to eat near the ordering area, upstairs with air conditioning, and outside too.

Google
Small portions for the price. The uncooked fish was just sitting on the counter. Felt rundown and employees didn’t seem to want to be there. Paid $9 for clam strips and tartar, the clam strips barely took up half the tray.

Google
The atmosphere is wonderful with a great view. Their fish and chips were delicious and a must have. Glad I finally got some spuds.

Google
Seriously guys, first off the workers here all looked and felt so pissed off to be there, the ambiance of the restaurant was cold and boring, But the halibut fish and chips were terrible, the fish was way overcooked like Jerky, and the batter of the fish tasted like nutmeg, NOT A FAN, the fries were like McDonald's, and really really bland ice tea, what a Shame! You guys have one of the best locations with extremely subpar food, come on guys I know you can do better than this👎

T MAN

Google
One of the best fish n chips places in Seattle. The prawns are also amazing. We tried the shrimp and crab cocktail and they were both slam dunks. They desperately need a remodel though. Every surface is sticky and the bathrooms are not ideal for such a busy place.

Yelp
Always good! I'm 65 and have been coming to Spuds since I was a little girl. I just have a question. When called Spuds Fish & Chips why does the over counter menu say FRIES instead of CHIPS? The other two locations say CHIPS. Doesn't make sense. Please change it.

Yelp
What can I say, it's Spuds! It's reliably tasty food and has been for decades. I love their fish and chips and especially like the halibut. There are lots of menu options so everyone can find something they like. Upstairs seating means there's plenty of space for any size party. Great location right on Alki and they have a small parking lot.

Yelp
Recommend to try this local oldest seafood spot in Seattle and it was delicious! It's a no frills place with seating inside, upstairs and outside. Food was solid! We shared the clam chowder and a fish and chips. Both were yummy. I really liked the crispy-ness of the fish. Service was kind and the lady behind the counter was great with explaining anything we had questions about.

Yelp
Saw the crowd here as we walked by and decided to give this a shot. Delicious! Fish and chips. Chowder.

Yelp
This place is just a good classic fish and chips spot. Everything was good nothing fancy just solid fried fish and good fries to eat with it. Staff was good, there is a nice view of the water from the restaurant, would recommend if you want a quick bite to eat.

Yelp
I tried Spud's in Alki for the first time, and it did not disappoint. The fish and chips were amazing - each piece of fish was huge, incredibly crispy, and tasted so fresh, not frozen. The fries were perfectly crispy with the ideal crunch. I especially loved their tartar sauce, which tasted homemade. Everything was excellent. The clam chowder was on the thicker side, warm, and very flavorful. I'm curious if this location is connected to the ones in Edmonds and Kirkland.

Yelp
A Seattle staple that consistantly serves up perfectly fried cornmeal breaded (that I prefer over beer battered) fish with old school fresh cut french fries. Staff are warm and welcoming. The stainless steel cladded open kitchen is always adds to the overall Spud's experience. The strawberry shake is a delightful occasional treat that never fails to satisfy that craving.

Yelp
I don't know what is going on but depending on who is cutting the dish. This is the first time that I have ever seen such small pieces..for the same price. Meanwhile, it is Inconsistent. Some days regular size then this. These 2 pieces were the size of the usual 1 piece. I did call the manager and he stated the same person has been doing the cutting of the fish for 59 years. Then clearly it is not that individuals fault but rather the business charging the same price for less product. Tourists would never know but loyal customers like myself, see the difference. No excuses. If the cost of the product has gone up then raise your prices but don't try to trick and cheat customers.

Yelp
We went to eat lunch here and it was delicious. We ordered a few different items and all were great! My youngest loved the scallops the best. We had the chicken and fries, fish and fries, scallops and the prawns. I recommend this restaurant. All of the employees were super nice and helpful. We didn't eat all of our meals as it is large portions so we were able to bring back some for later a later time. The location is nice as it's by the beach. Inside was clean and tables were large. They do have an upstairs as well.

Yelp
Take out style Fish n Chips on Alki. Cheaper and tastes better than the other options. Not vegan aside from chips which are probably fried in same oil but does not trigger my dairy allergy fwiw. Tbh my favorite place in Seattle for fried Oysters. Tastes more fresh than other places. The ambiance is very take-out diner but by the bathroom is a cool wall of history. And tbh i don't expect much from take-out service workers aside from them not being jerks and usually the service is at least that and usually people are friendly and don't seem like they hate their jobs.

Yelp
Solid no frills fish & chips spot (plus other types of seafood). Clams & Fries ($8) Chicken Strips & Fries ($11) 2 Pieces of Fish ($15.25) Love how great the portions are and how the price is very reasonable. Everything was golden fried and delicious, carefully wrapped in wax paper. Located on Alki beach. Long-ish line but the line moved quickly.

Yelp
Really great spot for fish and chips! Food was delicious. Fries are really good too! Service was quick, food came out hot and fresh!

Yelp
Great fish and chips! Serving size was pretty good, we shared the 2 piece and fries between two people. Got our food very quickly.
google avatar

Yelp
Solid fish n chips. I like the upstairs deck with the view of Alki Beach. Personally I like Sunfish better but thats not to says Spud's is bad.
google avatar

Yelp
Still coming to this local staple for some ono kine grindz, and still cant go wrong when you are craving a good fish and chips with a nice shake to top it off :)

Yelp
I ordered halibut and fries as well as clams. My family has been going to Spuds for years and it always is a steady go to spot love the cozy ocean vibe and the location on Alki! The food was super fresh and the service was what to be expected for a find your own seat eatery! The tarter is one of the best of all time tarter sauces! The breading on the clams was perfect! The amount you get for the price on the clams is well worth it. Great meal! Doesn't leave you feeling super heavy even though it was a full fried meal.

Yelp
Food poisoning and chips. Both kids sick after eating - came on fast and hard, no way it's mistaken for flu or anything else - both ate the same thing and it kicked in at the same time. Be warned - they are miserable

Yelp
Do you know what I love about spuds it's the same I grew up here. I've been coming here my whole life and I can always go in there and get good seafood, deep-fried, seafood and it's always consistent. It's always good people are always friendly and over all the years, it still stayed the same. you don't have to come here in the summer to enjoy it, they do have outside seating, and they do have upstairs seating that I've been to one time because it was storming outside.

Marco M.

Yelp
What happened to SPUDS? They are nickel and dimming me on the extra tarter and the fries!!! Look at these burnt soggy things. On the plus side the view is amazing from upstairs!
google avatar

Terrance S.

Yelp
Great tourist location, great scenery, legendary food, and great staffing. Always pick up The Special, Clams, and more. Clam chowder was incredible. This is a great location to bring the family for a day at the beach, as well as visiting some of the other delicious eateries in the neighborhood. A must visit.

Yelp
While in Seattle for a few days, I made it over to Alki beach and tried Spud Fish and chips. My daughter had the chowder in the sour dough bread bowl , while I ordered the 3 piece fish and chips. This place is WAY better than some of the places in the Public Market area. I am not going to name names here but you can check out my other Yelp reviews if you want to see. The service was fast and friendly. The prices are fair. The fish and chips were outstanding. Best I have had in a while. Great portion for the fish, too. My daughter loved the chowder, however was quite disappointed in the sour dough bread bowl. Today it was definitely not warm , nor was it fresh. I am sure this is not the norm. I will definitely be back here when in Seattle again. Great spot. The view and the walk along Alki are amazing. Spud makes it better

Yelp
If you like fish and chips you will have to stop and review these yourself! They're flat here, almost like a fish patty. The first bite was juicy but further bites were a bit drier. Taste was just okay this time but I still really enjoyed these fish and chips. An order of two was perfect for sharing between two of us. I really liked all the photos along the wall. I actually learned a lot of Alki Beach history just from the photos. Originally I ordered to go but I followed the photos upstairs and ended up eating here instead since upstairs has a great view of the beach.

Yelp
The perfect place for this summer for a great view and great food. I took my mother here and she loved how quick everything was.

Yelp
Fun fact: this is the oldest fast food restaurant in Seattle, founded in 1935 (even earlier than Dick's Burgers, 1954). I went here Sunday evening for dinner and it was fairly busy - fast casual spot that is known for fish and chips and chowders. There is an upstairs area as well, but we mostly got the food to go to eat at the beach that is across the street. We ordered the 2pc fish and chips with an extra serving of tartar sauce, and clam chowder cup. Fish and chips is alright - the fish is nicely battered though a little bit too chewy in texture, so it was hard to just use the fork to eat it. Fries were soggy and underwhelming - definitely skip it (the menu has fish-only options so I would recommend saving a few bucks and just do that). Clam chowder was also a bit underwhelming - there is not really the creaminess that is usually present in clam chowder, and I can taste a slight aftertaste of overcooked soup from the pot. I guess this being so central to the beach, especially with good weather in the summertime, combined with the low number of restaurants that open relatively late (most close 8-9pm), that this place still fares pretty well as a food option and is still in business for so long.

Sarah W.

Yelp
Heard this was a place to check out while in Alki beach but it ended up being extraordinarily mid. The fries were greasy, limp, and soaked in oil -- not fresh at all. On the other hand, the fish was super dry and the outside batter completely fell off the fish itself, which was average. For the fast food quality and portion, I think $15.16 is way too expensive.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
I enjoyed the fish and chips tremendously. Usually I can't finish a full meal of fish and chips but this one didn't disappoint! Beautiful scenery and service was fast. Staff members were constantly checking and cleaning tables which was great!
google avatar

Nicholas C.

Yelp
After dinner tonight I found myself still a bit hungry. 1.5 cocktails, some oysters and a salad from the preceding dinner left me a little hungry for something substantive and satisfying. Spud fish & chips didn't disappoint. Salty delicious carbs are a pitch up the middle and rounded mh evening off nicely. The service was fast friendly and efficient. And the kitchy atmosphere was on point for a welcoming family feel. Their location is shared by much more upscale experiences. This is the place I'd head with friends as we figured out where the night would go!
google avatar

Marcie S.

Yelp
Love it! Been coming here for a long time. My personal favorite fish and chips is beer battered but my husband's favorite is Spud's using cornmeal. The fish and chips here is delicious and fresh and the fries are good. The best cornmeal style I've had. Still looking for an excellent beer battered place but you can't go wrong with Spud's!
google avatar

Yelp
Our favorite place to visit when in town food is so fresh and DELICIOUS!!! Staff is friendly and quick service
google avatar

Barbara K.

Yelp
Service was good and fast. Maybe too fast. Clam chowder was good. Fried oysters were terrible, flavorless, dry and, cocktail sauce had no spice or heat to it whatsoever and tasted like bad ketchup. Fries were pretty good. Prices were too high for what we got. Won't be back.
google avatar

Layne D.

Yelp
Solid lunch option right across the street from Alki beach! While hanging out at the beach, we started to get hungry and tried this place out on a whim. I went with the clams & fries, while my partner tried out the chicken tenders since she isn't a seafood fan. It's been awhile since I've had fried clams but I thought they were good! Tartar sauce was solid too. The fries were average, but overall enjoyed our meal. Worth a stop if you need an easy spot by the beach to fuel up.

Yelp
I just returned to Seattle after living in Vegas for the past 6 years and was craving Spud Fish & Chips. So the day after I returned home, my daughter and I stopped by to get our order to go. The fish, fries and chowder was like heaven...the taste and texture was perfect. Plus the pieces of fish were large. Spud has not changed but it's a wonderful to eat in if you want to look out at the Puget Sound and what's taking place at Alki. From placing our order to receiving our order, we received great customer service. If you want to treat yourself to some of the best fish and chips in Seattle where you can eat in and enjoy the view or take out....I highly recommend that you check out Spud Fish & Chips at Alki. Yelp
Food just as good as I remember. I had the 2 piece fish with French fries.. If you're lucky enough to get a table upstairs, you have a really good view of the beach and the sound. The tables on the main floor are really good to sit at to watch people walk by. Especially on nice sunny days
google avatar

Morgan N.

Yelp
Great tasting fish and chips that arrived quickly. Unfortunately, they forgot my soda and I had to wait a bit for the person to come out of the back to give it to me. Also, there was a spill in the main restaurant area and it was difficult to pick up my order because I had to walk straight through it. Maybe if there is a spill next time they could put the pick ups on the other end of the counter, so people don't have to walk across the wet floor. It was very precarious. I really loved the garlic vinegar and the views from upstairs are great. The fries are just like Dick's Hamburgers. The music is oldies/60s and a smidge too loud. The restroom was a little gross with standing water and a broken paper towel holder. Overall, it was a great experience and I would come back, but maybe eat my fish out on the beach next time. I love that they have their own parking lot because it can be really challenging to park on Alki.

Yelp
What happened to Spud's? I haven't eaten here in like a year and the food is completely different now. The delicious fries which I craved are gone, they don't do the soft moist Dick's-style fry any more, and the fish is now also dry and forgettable. I was going to say this was a great West Seattle spot because you have a fantastic view from the seating upstairs, but with the food no longer being as good, it's not worth it, sadly.
google avatar

Varsh P.

Yelp
The service was quick. Ordered via yelp and used the pick up service. The order was ready in 20 minutes. I ordered fries which was not as crispy as I was expecting it to be. The coleslaw I ordered was fresh. The quantity was good enough for 3 people. Even though it was a weekend and pretty crowded the service was great.
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Food is always fried with goodness! My kid love to eat here on cold sunny days. Perfect for chowder and fish & chips. Sadly upstairs is real real cold on days under 45° outside. I don't think the heater makes it to the seating on 2nd level. Service is friendly but not conversational. Oh, but I absolutely LOVE that this place has its own parking spaces!
google avatar

Vivian H.

Yelp
This is my go-to place for fish & chips. I'm also in love with their homemade tartar sauce, which just stands out compared to other tartar sauces I've had everywhere else. The fish is nice and crispy. The breading is not too oily or dry. The fish underneath the breading is perfectly soft and melts in your mouth. The portions are great for the price, especially with a decent sized piece of fish paired with a good amount of fries. I also love the clam chowder and usually get a bowl when I'm here. The chowder comes with saltine crackers. I would drive all the way to West Seattle just for Spuds! They have a small parking lot and a lot of indoor dining booths, overlooking the water and Alki beach.

Erdrich M.

Yelp
Delicious prawns and fish & chips! Super friendly staff, great location right across from the beach. Their tartar sauce and cocktail sauce are SOOOOO good and the fish and prawns were perfectly cooked. Recommend!
google avatar

Emely R.

Yelp
Outstanding fish and chips right on the water of Alki Beach!!! Friendly staff, tons of combo options, and delicious fresh Spod Fish :p Too good too pass.. trust me haha
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
This old school standby still does things right. Fish was crispy on the outside, tender and flavorful on the inside. The chowder bread bowl got a hearty thumbs up too. The setting can't be beat. We took our lunch to go and found a beachside picnic table across the street. The perfect meal to show off our summer city to a visiting family member.
google avatar

Craig C.

Yelp
The legend of The Spud is real! Fantastic local spot with absolutely amazing Fish & Chips! Fresh, crispy, flaky & salty good tasting cod that really satisfies. Ask for the 3 kinds of vinegar, they're all wonderful. And the tartar sauce appears to be homemade. The Pineapple shake is choc full of pieces of pineapple and real coconut flavor. Don't sleep on the clam chowder as it was perfect as well. Fast & friendly counter service and compliant with COVID protocols!
google avatar

Traci J.

Yelp
Been going here for the past 50 years and I'm still a big fan. Looks like I haven't been in awhile though because there's no such thing as a single with extra fish, and it's just called a 2-piece - no more big cardboard of fries. I normally don't like limpy fresh cut so these guys must do a double fry because I whoof down a bunch of hot ones until my fish cools. Garlic vinegar is the way to go vs tartar sauce for me. Two 2-piece specials with a soda, one chowder and one coleslaw was about $45. Plenty of parking in the lot on this fine day. Downstairs seating full and upstairs darn near. I think all the other folks came on foot. I'll take Spuds any day over Ivars.
google avatar

Sharis W.

Yelp
Food was good, not a fan of tarter sauce but this was very good ! The location was great, food is de entry priced, and we left full
google avatar

Yelp
Such good fish and great customer service too. You can order ahead any just walk in and grab it or walk in and order.

Yelp
Best Fish and Chips in Seattle every summer I like to go to Alki just for Spuds Fish and Chips the fish is fried to perfection I love their fries and the house made Tartar sauce I always order extra sauce, I like to go sit down on the beach that's my special place to eat. The staff is always friendly and the service is great. Now I'm craving Fish and Chips guess I'll take the foot ferry for a little visit
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
When we first moved to Washington State, we tried the food here, and we were very happy with the taste. It was fresh and the portions were good. I don't remember much of the service, but it wasn't bad, otherwise I know I would have recalled. The ambiance isn't much that I can speak to, because we took our food to go. Overall, we'd recommend this business!
google avatar

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Found this place on our last day of my Seattle trip at the beginning of October and I could honestly say it's definitely gonna be one of my go-to establishment for fish and chips whenever I'm back in Seattle. The drive from downtown took about 20-25 minutes but you are blessed with the view of Alki Beach. The lot is small but we arrived right when they opened so we were able to get a spot. The staffs were nice, and the fish and chips is reasonably priced. The packaging wrap the fish and chips doubles as a place mat so it was great. We also got a cup of chowder which the husband finished. I'm not a big fan of chowder but I like enjoyed the breading of the fish and chips. They also have a lot of seatings downstairs, upstairs, as well out outdoors. Will definitely come back.

Yelp
This local favorite is always consistent. You cannot go wrong with the fish and chips. We enjoy taking it to go and eating on the beach.
