Best Dishes Eater New York Editors Ate This Week: May 5 | Eater NY

"A longtime neighborhood kebab shop the owner says has been here for 30 years, notable for selections like hummus and kibbeh and for luring customers from the sidewalk with the scent of grilled meats. The Aleppo kebab platter ($15.99) is described as featuring 'super savory and smoky lamb' served with whole grilled onions, rice, and flatbread rubbed with the featured pepper. The reviewer recommends not missing it when visiting the neighborhood." - Melissa McCart

Google
This was my first visit to Alkumah Halal, and it immediately set the tone, welcomed with a warm assalamu alaikum, attentive service, and a genuine feel. I ordered the crispy chicken shawarma, and it delivered. The exterior had a satisfying crunch, while the inside was super juicy and well-seasoned. The wrap paired perfectly with the fries, especially dipped in their toum, creamy, garlicky, and balanced without overpowering the chicken. Everything tasted fresh, not greasy or rushed. Portions were generous, flavors were balanced, and service was friendly throughout. I’ll absolutely be back to explore more of the menu.

Google
Tried Alkumah Halal and went with their famous crispy chicken shawarma, and it was honestly amazing. The wrap was perfectly toasted, the chicken was crispy, juicy, and full of flavor, and everything tasted incredibly hot and fresh. The sauces complemented it perfectly, and the fries were fresh, well seasoned, and a great addition. Portions were generous and the food came out piping hot. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. You can tell they take pride in their food. Definitely coming back again and highly recommend stopping by.

Google
The Viral Shawarma... it was good and very appetizing. Came around 3 PM on a Friday. Compared to other market trends for chicken shawarma, this was a standard establishment. It was good for the experience, but it is NOT the BEST shawarma. What would have made this better was if there was more chicken to limit the overuse of the sauce. Because it was incredibly saucy, it did not sit right the entire time for after taste. I've came on separate occasions and had their mixed grill which is excellent. It's great food but measure your expectations.

Google
The chicken shawarma was absolutely amazing! It was fresh, crispy, and full of flavor. The chicken was perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of spice and garlic. Honestly, everything about it hit. The fries were also amazing, hot, crispy and cooked to perfection. On top of that, the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming—they really make you feel like family. Definitely coming back!

Google
Alkumah is hands down one of the best Middle Eastern spots around. The food is always fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection, from their juicy grilled chicken to the mouthwatering kebabs and shawarma. Portions are generous, and everything tastes homemade. The service is warm and welcoming, and you can tell they put real care into the customer experience. The spreads, fresh bread, and grilled meats make every meal feel like a feast. Whether you’re dining in with family or grabbing takeout, this place never disappoints. Highly recommend to anyone looking for authentic, delicious halal food!

Google
The shawrma is pretty good. Not the best i had but worth trying. The wait was very long but its normal visiting on a Friday evening. The place is pretty outdated and parking is always a problem in paterson.

Google
Super friendly staff, called in my order got there and it was ready to go. Super hot super fresh super tasty! My new favorite shawarma spot

Google
Ok so I've been going to Paterson for shawarmas since I was a child, and today I can say that Al Kumah has my top 2 favorite shawarmas on main street. The crispy chicken shawarma was 10/10 and the service was also 10/10. Very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be back (I'm Lebanese so I know a good shawarma when I taste one ;)

Yelp
Very authentic , hole in a wall type restaurant. Their Kufta kebabs , grilled while chicken and falafel are amazing!

Yelp
The shawarma here is out of this world and very decently priced. Very nice welcoming people here . Casual spot with an authentic feel viewing the meat skewers as they carve the meats.

Yelp
Being raised right outside Ironbound Newark... we know our Portuguese bread and desserts. When we were visiting P-Town we had to see how it compared with our bakeries back home. It did not disappoint. As authentic as it gets! The workers were extremely welcoming, the entire place is spotless, and best off all the bread/desserts are super fresh. We will definitely be back next time we are in the area. Huge plus dispensaries are right down the block... perfect pitstop when munchies strike.

Yelp
So yummy shwarma and fast service. Picked up food on a last minute whim and loved it! The service was fast and really nice. Will definitely come back!!

Yelp
Excellent places and top quality food from this restaurant. And the customer service from the employees were great! Especially the guy who helped me out named rayan. Service from him and the food there definitely earns five stars.

Yelp
Best spot in Paterson for platters and sandwiches. I haven't seen any other spots cook all of the food (other than shawarma) over charcoal. The service was great, very friendly staff. I ordered the beef shawarma sandwich. The bread was perfectly crispy and the shawarma was juicy, fresh and full of flavor. It has tahini, tomatoes and pickles. Best shawarma sandwich in Paterson. I also ordered the mixed grill platter. The kofta was my favorite part. On top of that, you can't beat their prices. We also ordered the babaganoush, best I've ever had. Homemade!

Erndie E.

Yelp
Fresh delicious food! My girlfriend and I were walking around trying to pick where and what we wanted to eat. We are so happy we stumbled in here. The staff were so welcoming and efficient. We learned it's the oldest family owned restaurant on the block. The food was so fresh and delicious. We ordered the Alkumah platter, fattoush and salad. The salad was my favorite; an amazing mix of cucumbers, tomato's, parsley and a citrusy dressing. The meat was cooked to the perfection with much flavor. Their tea is quite yummy as well. We devoured our food before we could snag a picture. I will be revisiting and I recommend this place. 10/10

Yelp
If you are hungry and walking on Main street just follow your nose! This place grabbed my attention by the smell of their grill. I've never visited here since I have my own spots to grab Middle Eastern kabobs/shawarma's, and boy have I been missing out! This restaurant has been around for decades, and the foot traffic was non-stop...not overly crowded, but they do have a good flow of customers. This is very good, because it means it has good food, and the food is consistently being made fresh. I just love when I see fresh coal used to grill meats. This is old school, and gives it a unique grill flavor that is mouth watering. At this point I was sold, I needed to try a mixture of everything. I was soooo happy I did! I went with the Mixed Platter and added beef and chicken shawarma to it. The meat was grilled to perfection. Even the grilled onions were on point! The spicy seasoned bread had that grill taste as well. The falafel were good, and the tahini sauce was money! The best part was this platter and falafel order didn't break the bank. It was under $30 for all that food. FYI: Only street parking.

Yelp
Al Kumah is hands-down my favorite spot in Paterson for Arabic/Syrian food. It's not fancy, but the food, service and prices can't be beaten. The first thing you notice upon entering the restaurant is two enormous sizzling shawarmas (chicken and beef) rotating on their spits as they get crispy and delicious. You're also hit by the wonderful, enticing smell of roasting meat. I promise you, even if you just finished a five-course meal, you'll suddenly be hungry again. It's this beef shawarma, that makes me drive 30 minutes and spend another 30 minutes searching for an elusive parking spot nearby. It's that good, and incredibly inexpensive. At just $6 for a shawarma wrap, I always get two (and you should too. Trust me!) You get a choice of pita or lavash bread for the wrap. Go with the lavash. It's fresh and soft and holds up to the extremely juicy ingredients very well. They slice the shawarma of your choice off the spit freshly for each order (no hot trays here!), add sliced onions, pickles and tahini (and hot sauce if you ask for it), and then wrap it tightly. Then after a quick dip in the drippings from the spit, they give the wrap a quick bit of flame from the rotisserie and crisp it all up on the griddle. The combination of the simple ingredients, the incredibly flavorful shawarma meat with those crispy charred bits, and the freshly grilled bread make it one of the truly great sandwiches you will eat. I should also mention that the two brothers running the store are a couple of the nicest guys you will ever meet. They're clearly proud of their family restaurant and the food they make, and they should be. Definitely try Al Kumah if you're in the area, but remember... get two!

Yelp
I'm still eating my meal while writing this review! I haven't had lamb or hummus this good since I was in Egypt almost 30 years ago. I couldn't recommend them more highly. Gary Pignatello

Yelp
One of my clients wanted halal food and I decided to pick up something for myself as well. I called in my ordered for an 11:45 pick up. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and waited for the man to get to me. I ordered the falafel sandwich and he didn't catch that part, he only gave me falafel only with an order of fries. He had to make it a sandwich real fast. When he was done I paid and left. When I got in I ate and the meal was just ok. The falafel sandwich while filling wasn't great. The fries were just ok. All in all I had an ok experience.

Mariam B.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch and this place did not disappoint. The food came out quick, tasty, and flavorful. The guys were also super nice and it looked very nice and clean inside. Would highly recommend.

Amal A.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious ! Definitely recommend if your looking for taste of Mediterranean flavor! A little break down ! Customer service - was welcomed and seated. Cleanliness -super clean Food - I got the whole chicken with rice and salad ! I literally finished every single bite. Bursting flavor, juicy and just fell off the bone. Great job you guys !

Yelp
Bought a kufta kabab sandwich which was one of the worst I ever tried. 1. Pita bread was not fresh (at least three days old) 2. Hardly any meat - and not spiced fully 3. Very little bit of vegetables and tehina sauce It is a very miser way to prepare a sandwich which is not fresh and not tasty Do not waste any calories on this place

David B.

Yelp
People are great. Food is great. Generous portions. You cannot miss. With the South Paterson food scene always so competitive, you ate always on the lookout for who stands out. Delicious.

Yelp
For 10+ years I've been coming and going thru Paterson for middle eastern everything. Not ONCE have I ever been totally satiated by a shawarma sandwich in Paterson; I've tried over 10 diff places. It's always been a huge let down. This spot NAILED IT. The right combination of onion, tomato, properly seasoned meat. I mean, I was sooooooo happy eating it. As a Palestinian, I knew what flavor profile I was searching for, and this was delicious. Alhamdulilah. Great job guys! Recommend shawarma sandwich from here!! My search is over.

Faseeh M.

Yelp
Food was amazing, I'd give them 100% five stars. The presentation was amazing, the place was clean and so was the restroom. The customer service was also amazing, they were very understanding so i'd give them a 5 stars.

Yelp
One of The best kebab I got, whenever I'm around there I have to get their kebab. Well recommend it, service got better too .

Faris A.

Yelp
food is excellent and authentic. servers cater to you right away. i recommend the kofta sandwiches and al kumah platter.

Yelp
Felt like trying a new spot for Arabic food so I walked in here. It doesn't look like much, but you can see the meats grilling directly behind the counter. The service was pretty bad and the restaurant looks pretty dirty, but I like the falafel here more than over at Al-Basha. The falafel balls are more moist on the inside. The tahini sauce served with the falafel reminded me greatly of grape leaves. Shawarma was also very good, with a nice char. The portions are a bit smaller for the same price though.

Magnolia M.

Yelp
This was my favorite place for all things delicious. I have been going there for years to pick up food even if it's a long drive, hard to find parking etc etc . But unfortunately this is longer as it used to be. Food is dry and not tasty. The shawarma used to be so authentic and delicious. Took me back to my days in the Middle East. Its NOT the same anymore . I'm sad to say .. food is not good .I'm giving three stars just for the friendly staff not for the food. Goodbye - nothing lasts forever.
google avatar

Kamala K.

Yelp
The people here are super nice and hospitable. They wont hesitate to answer any questions you have regarding the menu. If its your first time visiting them, I recommend the "Alkumah Platter" it has alittle of bit of everything so you can give it a try. My favorite is the "shish tawook" platter, very delicious
google avatar

L Z.

Yelp
Ry, the host here is a really nice guy, always made sure we had everything and was very attentive and made us feel welcome. Very very very good food, chicken and beef schwermas are the best!!!! Love eating here

Malikah P.

Yelp
The buffet at this location made me decide never to go there again. The service, and cleaning was so bad. The food was also not tasty as other surrounding restaurants for the price.
google avatar

Johanna S.

Yelp
I have been coming to this restaurant for a couple of years already and it never disappoints. I tried several Arabic places since I'm engaged to an Egyptian man but, this by far its my FAVORITE. I am usually the kind of lady that loves fancy places but this place is far from that. Very modest and simple but the taste of their food really stole My heart! It's authentic, fresh and just DELICIOUS! Everyone Must try! My favorite dishes are the Tabulé salad ams their falafel, and chicken shawarma sandwiches. If you love HUMUS this restaurant have the best one on town! The people working there are always super friendly and willing to serve you right away! Feel free to get up from Your table and serve your self and fresh brewed cup of delicious mint tea!
google avatar

Catherine F.

Yelp
We had mixed grill food catered from al Kumah restaurant , service was outstanding ! Very responsive and helpful ! The food was the best Middle eastern food I've EVER had. Everybody was amazed by the food. Al Kumah is now my go to place for any party or gathering !! I would give 10 stars if I could !
google avatar

Aisha M.

Yelp
I've been getting shawarma from this location for ever and the quality and flavor is consistent. The sandwiches are affordable and portions are perfect. This is the best shawarma spot in the area and I will always recommend it!

Jennifer M.

Yelp
I live in Vernon, NJ, and travel an hour to get to this superb hidden gem of Middle Eastern food. I went for my 3rd visit yesterday and was warmly greeted by two sons and a father who cook and serve, probably own. It is 5 star food with 2 star prices. The father made sure my onions, that come on a giant skewer and grilled over open flame and charcoal, were cooked just right as well as my grilled tomatoes. Just mouthwatering delicious. The falafel is made to order and the hummus is the best! The beef, lamb and chicken are cooked to perfection, well, actually it is all delicious and perfectly cooked. I go shopping in the Arab district for great veggies fish, and cheeses, then to Al Kumah for a meal afterwards. They always recognize me by my Kentucky accent which is rare on Main Street there. I saw huge trays of food being catered. Looked so good, I may forget about a turkey for Thanksgiving. Actually, they would probably make one for me! Please, you will not be disappointed after the first bite you take. It is so worth the visit.

N And N K.

Yelp
One of my go to spots when I'm Paterson. The service is always on point, and the food is always top notch. The best part is its family owned and run and you can feel the love in the food. I've always felt welcomed everytime I open the door and the owners son is always in a positive mood, always thankful, and appreciative. Definitely will be back soon.
google avatar

Ameen J.

Yelp
Best shawarma and falafel sandwiches in the area now! Great customer service, owners very friendly.
google avatar

Zakir B.

Yelp
Pay cash & count how they charge you. Menu shows one price & they charge another. Don't waste your time here give your business to an honest establishment. Won't be coming back.

shoaib i.

Yelp
Truly a great place to grab a bite. Their food is exceptional and fresh, probably due to the fact that they are also in the butcher business. And they have probably the best prices in Paterson, which is a competitive market. 5 stars. Would recommend to anybody.
google avatar

Yasmin E.

Yelp
I like this place for their sandwiches and platters. Not a big fan of the chicken shawarma sandwich since it's not authentic shawarma. Kofta sandwich is delicious though. Cheap and good quality for when we are in the area
google avatar

Sanad A.

Yelp
Delicious food and good service. They do catering and ordering by phone. The food is very great taste and fresh. I never eaten inside the restaurant, but have always ordered to go or by phone.I like their beef and chicken shawarmas. The atmosphere is very casual and friendly. Reasonable prices.

Nasir M.

Yelp
Excellent food, quick service, friendly staff. Free tea. One of the best shawarma places in the area.
google avatar

Dewan A.

Yelp
Ok. 1) The food is excellent. Best in terms of taste. 2) Service is horrible. Ambiance is bland. 3) The price is reasonable. 4) Use this place for take out. 5) They have SPICY falafel sandwich, upon request.
google avatar

Nesreen A.

Yelp
Yummy food and really friendly staff! They go above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and are always checking up on you! Their shawarma is great and so is the mixed grill! I'd definitely recommend!
google avatar

Dias J.

Yelp
Stopped by for take out shawarma sandwiches. Service was quick. Got the Arabic shawarma and chicken shawarma. The cashier explained to me that the Arabic shwarma was made out of lamb meat and came with fries and pickles on the side. With just a dollar difference, we went for it. The Arabic shwarma was a lot more flavorful than the chicken sharwama and at $6 it's a steal for lunch. The chicken shwarma has huge chunks of chicken which was not to our taste as we like it chopped up. Also it was not as juicy as the lamb and relied on the copious amounts of garlic sauce that it was mixed in for flavor. Given the stiff competition of shwarma sandwiches in this area, this place is a good contender.
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
Best Shish kabobs around! The dude who takes the orders is a cool cat who is always OK when I Ask for extra pickles. Love this spot

Sonia R.

Yelp
I had the Aleppo Kebab with rice, pita bread and mohamara. Now I've never been Syria or the Middle East, but I have eaten Middle Eastern food all over the U.S. and this definitely is some of the most is the delicious food I've ever eaten. The kebab is made fresh when you order, the meat used to make the kebabs is mixed with herbs and spices right in front of you and then put on a charcoal grill. It's like you've walked into someone's home in the Middle East and they're cooking fresh homemade meal for you. It's also a meat market so the meat they use is always fresh and never frozen. The customer service at Al-Kumah is also the best. They go out of their way to make sure everything you've ordered is perfect and they even remember what you ordered on your previous visit.
google avatar

Yahya S.

Yelp
The kufta kabob sandwich with a side of garlic butter. Do it. I'm telling you, you will not regret it. All of the sandwiches here are excellent. This restaurant is by far the best spot for shawarma/kufta kabob sandwiches in Paterson and Clifton. Fresh meat, perfect seasoning, the food is just mouthwatering and CHEAP. Super cheap. You cant go wrong with $3.50 sandwiches. Seriously. AND the inside decor isn't as dive-y as it used to be, they renovated well. If your girl is a foodie, great spot to take, also great for families. One concern is make sure you are clear in your order, most of the people(if not all) are native Arab speakers so there is a language barrier. But totally worth any bit of confusion. Go here and eat whatever is on the menu with confidence.

Majed A.

Yelp
5 STARS!! Best Restaurant on the strip of Main Street in the heart of Paterson, NJ. This restaurant has amazing quality food with amazing quality staff. Extremely friendly and owners were really kind and respectful. Food selection goes above and beyond and they cater to your exact needs and services. You just can't go wrong here. Whether you're hungry for something light or a full course meal, this is def the spot to go. CHECK It OUT!
google avatar

Klaus C.

Yelp
This spot has some Banging fresh food. I come here with my wife, my mother, & my friends all the time. The waiter always welcomes me with open arms and gives me Excellent service. The KUFTA sandwiches are the best. Def. come through and try it.
google avatar

Youssef K.

Yelp
Placed an order through Yelp, got to the restaurant 30 minutes later and was told they didn't see my order because I ordered through Yelp. Was told to wait 5 minutes and they'll have my order ready. I came back 20 minutes later and was told they're not accepting Yelp orders because "Yelp hasn't been sending them the checks". I requested he cancel my order, he assured me he would (he never did), so I had to call Yelp/Grubhub to get my order cancelled.
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
This is my wife and I is go to spot. The food is always consistently good and the people are always so respectful and ready to help. I also had them cater for my sons birthday party and the food was amazing! Everyone at the party was complimenting the food! Thanks again guys, we will be back very soon!

Yelp
Hands down the best shawarma! Been coming here for years and will continue to do so! Super delicious and the price can't be beat!!

Yelp
I ordered 1 very tasty chicken sharwama and shish kebob sandwich. It's on the small side. I really wanted another 1 but the damage was $12.25 for both. I may have been jipped but I wasn't going to start any trouble there. I will return when its not too busy and I fully understand how to order there.
