Yelp
4:55 am, 10/11/16. I just walked into Allstar for the yummy cinnamon rolls all their locations are known for. I walk up to the counter and say, "good morning" to the lady working there. She turns to me and says, we're closed". "Ok", I say as I turn to walk out confused. Then I say to her, "well your door is unlocked". I'm thinking 'if you're not open, for security sake and safety, don't leave your front door unlocked at 5 minutes to 5 am! As I'm walking out the door, a gentleman is coming in. I say to him as we pass one another, " she said they're closed". He seems to ignore my informative gesture and proceeds on into Allstar. So I go out to the parking lot, I turn around to see how she receives him. I just told him they're closed. Now he'll go all the way to the counter just to be turned away as I was........ Then, something very disappointing happens. She waits on this patron and sells him a cressant. So I go back in and say, "excuse me; I thought you said you were closed". She barely makes eye contact with me and says, "he just wanted a cressant". I then say to her, " you didn't even ask me what I wanted. But I'll tell you what, I'll never comeback in here again. You are wrong for how you've treated me". No yelling. No screaming. No vandalism of property. I said what I've quoted above and left. Since I gave her my word that I'd never return, I won't. My word is my bond. My mother raised me to reject the urge to judge someone based on the exterior. She told me to 'let them show you who they are. Then, when they do, you not only know who you're dealing with, but also, how to deal with them'. Thanks, mom. She's been dead going on ten years and she's still taking me to school.
I'm African American. The patron is Caucasian. The employee is Asian. None of these facts matters to me. Yet, it seems that some difference between the second patron and myself mattered to the employee. Why did she refuse me service and yet wait on the man who came in 5 seconds after me? Why did she discriminate against me and yet she graciously waited on him? I do not presume to know. I'm not judging her as being racist or stereotypical. I'm just relating the facts of my observation. All things said and considered, I'll continue to go to the other Allstar locations as I always have. I will however avoid 399 5th St and any other establishments that treat patrons differently based on the imbalances within their own hearts....... I've got to go in to my job now. No delicious Allstar pastry in my tummy. I do have a reinvigorated zeal to treat others as I wish to be treated though. I promise I won't mistreat my customers today or any day beyond this.
Thanks to all of you who post your experiences on YELP! Thanks to Yelp for giving us this informative platform. Good or bad, keep posting. Good businesses need to be recognized. Bad ones need to elevate their standards.
