The Bay Area’s Most Exciting Restaurant Openings | Eater SF

"A restaurant modeled after Japanese yokocho alleys that approximates sampling several food stalls under one roof—here you can hop between a rice-bowl spot, a ramen shop, and a matcha cafe near the UC Berkeley campus." - Luke Tsai

Got the Deluxe Original Tonkotsu Ramen and damn — sooo good! Super tasty, great portion, and honestly hit the spot. 10/10 would recommend. I’m def coming back!

Its a new opening restaurant in the berkeley area, and its already packed with the crowd. They served many good foods such as ramen, donburi and chirashi at a very affordable price from $10 I specifically order the deluxe ramen that comes with extra egg and meats, at the affordable price range, the ramen surprisIngly taste so good and one of the best I have ever tried. You can also custom the type of the noodle without any extra charge. The ramen comes in three flavor, tonkotsu, black and red. Go for red if you love spicy and black if you love a strong broth (personally I am) We also ordered their chirashi bowl which is very fresh lastly we tried the organic matcha they had which named whisk. They have many flavors but our favorite is matcha mango Definitely worth to try this restaurant

Alley Kitchens is a really great place to go for a quick bite! I would recommend ordering ahead using the snackpass app. My favorite meal from here is the beef bowl, it tastes like really authentic Japanese beef and is served with just the right amount of food! As for atmosphere, all seating space is on two counters so it's a little more of a tight space but is great for if u just want a sit down meal for yourself of 1-2 friends. Honestly the whole set up makes you feel like you're in a quiet hole in the wall, in the midst of busy Berkeley.

*rating only based on Chicken Curry Bowl - IF YOU GO TRY THE OTHER STUFF, might be good. didn’t try the ramen, matcha, chirashi, etc. S02 - Chicken Curry Bowl - ~$13 after tax. Place opened around January 2020 VERY cool aesthetics, very new. They have Great polite staff, and the S02 is alright, but I would say the high prices not worth it. It’s very run of the mill but higher than average cost. Would come back if there was ever offerings for like “mini” size for half price or daily deals for different menu items like seasons of Japan does.

This place is more of a « fast food » ramen place. It’s great for student lunches, something warm and quick— you get a pretty good Ramen for your buck.

Alley kitchen does an excellent job in carry-out Japanese food during pandemic. The presentation is very nice. Its ramen is really good. If you are not too hungry, I would go for a ramen in this place. Otherwise, you can try their rice dishes. Portion size for rice dishes is huge. Curry chicken don is good and filling. Gyu (beef) don is not well made though as it doesn’t have enough sauce. Overall, a welcome addition to the Cal campus dining scene but you may need to try a few different dishes to see what suits you best.

I ordered to go the sakedon. They gave me measly little pieces of salmon and after eating one, I realized the pieces were dry and at some of the ends were discolored and hard. My stomach is feeling bad and I’m nauseous. Why would you serve someone this?

Got the deluxe kaisen don and the red tonkotsu ramen. Forgot to take a picture of the ramen as I dove in head first. The food was great and exactly as how they would describe it “alley style eateries from japan”. Also the service was amazing. Considering the location and the cost of the food, it’s really hard to beat what this place offers. If I were to make one suggestion the sushi rice could have more vinegar + salt, but I understand as that could throw off folks who are used to plain white rice. I’ll definitely be coming back soon.
