"This time-honored family-owned restaurant continues to shine in a city rich with Mexican dining choices. Barbacoa from 44 Farms often serves as the filling to tortas, tacos, and more, and saucy enchilada plates include house-made toppings like herb butter Suiza sauce and chili gravy." - Brittany Britto Garley, Kayla Stewart

Really delicious food with wonderful flavor! This place has a cozy vibe with great seating options inside or on their large patio. The staff is very friendly, which is always appreciated. Their collection of menu items to choose from are all delicious - I especially recommend the stuffed avocado with chicken. It was cooked to perfection, and the flavors were exceptional together. This location is wheelchair accessible, though the entrance to the restroom area is a bit strange.

I had the fajitas, everything it came with was great but the meat was not my favourite part. Blood orange margarita was super flavourful. Service was excellent. Good value. My improvement would be the chairs, not very comfortable. My husband also said it was hard to find parking as their car park was full.

Google
First time impression. The food was hot and came out fast. We ordered 2 dishes and everything looked fine. The service was fast as well, no complaints. The actual food is okay, I would not say it wowed me or stood out. Average dishes on the menu you find elsewhere. Note that there is only 1 stall of men/women's restroom so you will have to be patient and wait.

We went yesterday 5/18/2024 even tho the town power was out this little restaurant still managed to serve out good food. We came all the way from Chicago and they did not turn us away. Their menu was very limited but they used the resources they had to still give good services, the food was good and the margaritas were strong (which im not mad at) Our waiter was great! And the Carne guisada was so good.

Came here for dinner to try it out finally! Parking was a bit challenging since there is construction. The place is cute with plenty of seating inside and outside, we were seated quickly and our waiter got our drink order to us fast. The menu is extensive and they have a lot of great options, there is also a full bar. Our orders did not take long to come out, everything was delicious and fresh with good portions. My mom loved it! I love Mexican food but I also love affordable Mexican food, this is a bit on the higher end of Mexican, so a little more expensive for my liking but I would definitely come here for a nice dinner or a birthday.

Google
This place was recommended to me by one of the locals. This place is hands down one of the best Mexican spots I've been too. Reasonably price 16$ bucks for my lunch, even had some left.

We, a party of two visited once on 9/27/2023 around 6:30 pm. Here’s what we ordered: 🔷 Tortilla Soup ($15) 🔷 Taco Salad 🥗 Dinner ($11) 🔷 Beef 🥩 Burrito 🌯 ($12) Choose one: beef fajitas, chicken fajitas, al pastor. With rice, beans, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, crema mexicana, cheese. (The beef in my burrito was fatty. I wouldn’t order it again). 🔷 Cheese 🧀 enchilada a La cartel (the cheese inside had a creamy texture and interesting taste) 🔷 Guacamole 🥑 ($12) 🧡 Fresh Juices/ Aguas Frescas ($5 each). We had pineapple 🍍 and watermelon 🍉 🔷 Chips and salsa (complimentary) This meal was $75.78 total ✅ Fast service. Our waiter was very attentive. ✅ Big portion sizes ⚠️ Parking 🅿️ was a challenge due to construction 🚧.

Good food - we day outside and it was very pleasant.

Yelp
We went for cinco de mayo and it was busy but not too overcrowded. We got a table on the patio, at first it took a while to get service, but once they realized we had been waiting, they were so apologetic and from then on, the service was very good and attentive. The food was good, got a combination plate with shrimp brochete, cheese enchilada and a taco. The shrimp was very good, as well as the cheese enchilada. The taco was good but was just meat on a soft tortilla, added some of our queso to give it something extra. Love me a good margarita and wasn't crazy about the house marg, however tried the skinny one too, and that was better than the house in my opinion. Only downfall to the patio was the amount of flies swarming, even had the little fly deter thing on the table but didn't help a whole lot. Otherwise nice chill place for good food in the Heights.

Robert L.

Yelp
This is for the cheese enchilada score only. sauce is amazing and everything about these cheese enchiladas is Excellent Enchilada score five out of five. definitely go for the cheese enchiladas Service great, Cheese Enchiladas... Super good with all the right flavors

Nancy K.

Yelp
We had a goodbye luncheon here for a dear friend and ate on the patio. The weather and the service and the food was perfect. Chips were thin and crisp and fresh and our appy queso was yummy and a good size for the price. I ordered a combo plate that had a beef fajita taco carbon. It was delicious but i was surprised the meat was cut fine, like street taco style and not the strips. But it came with a foil wrap on half of it which made it easy to eat. Enchiladas are always good but their rice is very yummy and authentic.

Jim B.

Yelp
Always consistent. Always delicious. The frozen are delish!!! We love brunch, lunch, dinner, and just drinks!!!

Nick R.

Yelp
Nice spot for dinner, current horrid construction notwithstanding. My pozole was nice, the assortment of toppings, particularly the avocado was outstanding. Toppings included chicharrones, which I thought were a nice touch in the chicken based broth. Speaking of broth, the salsa that came with the chips was a nice brothy touch. The tamal was good, and our margaritas were particularly delicious. The space is bigger than it looks, although it would seem more intimate with fewer kids (but kids gotta eat too and there is a children's menu). Prices may seem high but consistent for the area.

Andres G.

Yelp
Great spot home cooked feeling food! The rice reminds me of my late Abis (grandma). The servers are all over making sure you feel like their priority. And the space is comfortable and trendy.

Brittney D.

Yelp
Alma was good! I had sat at the bar solo and had the chilaquiles Rojas on a Sunday morning. Service was quick and attentive. Taste was solid, breakfast potatoes could have been a bit more seasoned, crispy. Portion was good, I took some with me. I'd def return for the drinks, I saw some nice looking ones walk by me. Two word review: Rojas, claro!

Ako E.

Yelp
Personally, I think this place is way overpriced for what you get. Whilst the carnitas tacos were tasty, I prefer mine on a corn tortilla with raw onions & cilantro. This place serves them on flour with grilled onion. Not a fan. However, their green sauce is the bomb with a significant kick.

Alexis T.

Yelp
Alma never disappoints! My family has been coming here for the past 14 years and there's never been a bad day. Food is always fresh and made to order, drinks are crisp and refreshing, and service is always on point. If your looking for a great time with groups, a date, or alone you'll always have an amazing experience. Thank you Alma for a decade+ worth of fantastic food and service!

Erick V.

Yelp
First time visiting here and maybe it's just my latin roots but the food & drinks here were okay, it just didn't give me a wow factor and it also seemed like the alcohol had little to none! Our waiter Kevin, was super nice and friendly and would check up on us regularly so real great customer service. The ambiance of the place is decently decorated but it kind of reminds me of a lunch cafeteria with all the tables being so close together. Aside from the food and drinks being eh, I highly doubt I would come back again. :/

Morgan W.

Yelp
This is a cute neighborhood place. The margaritas come with much variety! I came with a group of friends. We ordered a quesadilla to split as an appetizer. Then we each ordered something different. I went with the fajitas. They were alright. Nothing to really write home about. By the time you put all the toppings on though, they were good. I would certainly come back for a quick bite. Because the parking is terrible, I'll order to go so you guys can take the seats!

Lauren D.

Yelp
This place was amazing! Still open after the storm that just passed through as they were working through the limited power. Considering the limited menu we only got fajitas and had to wait a bit, but it was definitely worth it!! Cannot recommend the aquas frescas enough along with the fajitas dinner. Some of the best fajitas I've had in a while, and their sauce is amazing. The only thing I didn't love was the white rice, but even then it was still good. Definitely would recommend for a dinner out. Not too crowded and excellent ambiance.

Rebecca W.

Yelp
It pains me to write a review like this about Alma but after my experience today, it feels warranted. I've been coming to Alma for years and have never had a bad experience, in fact, it's my go-to tex Mex choice for this part of the heights. Admittedly, it had been a few months since I had dined here so my recent return excited me. Their mole enchiladas have always been my favorite so naturally I ordered them, but when they arrived, it was all grease and the mole tasted bitter and burnt, I couldn't eat them. I never send anything back but there was no way I could stomach these, my appetite was gone. What made it worse was when I told our server (and I was mortified to even have to say anything at all), instead of apologizing or asking how to remedy, he verbatim said "I don't know what you want me to tell you." Yikes.

Diane E.

Yelp
Love the tortilla soup! Large portion and so good. The broth!! They serve with cheese, chips and avo. Just delicious! And very kind staff.

Adie S.

Yelp
The queso was a little boring, but the fajitas were good! Would come back again! Servers were very nice!

Kamal S.

Yelp
Low profile place with good food service is great quality is fine underrated unfortunately

Ramsey J.

Yelp
I wanted carne guisada, which is how we ended up here. It was ok, but not great. The skinny margaritas were ridiculously priced at $16. The queso was watery. For two plates and two margaritas and queso, over $100. No longer can you get decent Mexican in the Heights for a good price. I'm sad. Our waiter was super nice and fast, plus.

Anthony R.

Yelp
The staff is friendly and the place has a cozy vibe. I enjoyed the savory chicken mole lunch special and the flavorful Mexican rice. The rice was the freshest I've ever had at a tex-mex restaurant And the jalapeño pineapple margarita is just to fantastic. The chips and salsa were also excellent. Although it was my first visit, I would most certainly return.

Gina C.

Yelp
My new favorite Mexican Restaurant in the Heights! Masks required, amazing smells when you walk in, great music, and cute outdoor patio. We got the enchiladas de mole and a chicken tamale on the side. The best chips and salsa I've had in forever. I will definitely be back for Happy Hour to try a margarita! 4 stars only because our service was slow and we ended up having to flag another waiter down to get our check. We were seated outside and are sure he had many more tables inside so not a reason to not come again.

Hugo B.

Yelp
This place is great!!! House Margarita is smooth and has a nice kick...the chips and salsa are delicious. The guacamole was great. This is one place we are definitely coming back. The parking seems to be limited...but that's is not going to stop us from coming back...love it!!!!

Hunter S.

Yelp
Why not. This place is great. Super cool margarita which every Texan loves. The fajita's were amazing. Cool. Local spot

Ben S.

Yelp
It's hard to put into words how great this place is. You know when you go to your favorite little place and it's all of the same people working, well that's this place. If you know what you're doing, you start off by ordering green sauce with your hot sauce and chips. There's nothing better than salsa Verde and queso. Your hardest decision will be if you get refried or Charro beans, because they're both fantastic. Anything with beef fajita will be 10 out of 10. But the golden gem, the cheese enchiladas with the chili gravy. Go for the Americano and if you pair it with some green sauce you get the best of everything. Wash it down with house margarita and you have a hell of a good time. I dare you to recommend a better, Mexican food restaurant.

Stacia B.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, excellent service. Had Barbacoa tacos and chicharrones with queso.

Tom M.

Yelp
Stopped by for an early dinner the other night and left happy and full. We started with house Margaritas and Sparkling Sangria. Everyone enjoyed their drinks. For dinner we had Shrimp Tacos, Chile Relleno, Chicken Flautas, and Guadalajara. We left with clean plates, full tummies, and smiles on our faces. I'm sure the alcohol didn't hurt, but the food was very tasty and memorable. Highly recommend this place.

Jessica G.

Yelp
Love the staff and the fajitas! The guys that work here are so sweet! Love sitting at the bar! They are all so attentive! Excellent margaritas too. Cant get enough of this place!

Scott M.

Yelp
A 'go-to' for a great breakfast!!! They also do great business the rest of the day, but a Sunday morning breakfast is fantastic! Breakfast tacos of all sorts, some shrimp wrapped in bacon and some great sausage! We bring our grandkids in for the pancakes and specialty juices, too!!! They live it and the wait staff is the best!!!

Taneisha R.

Yelp
I came today with a friend for lunch. The lunch menu is limited, but you aren't restricted to only ordering off the lunch menu during lunch hours. I had the Guadalajara plate, which includes two cheese enchiladas, a beef taco, rice, and beans. I was expecting to really enjoy this, but it was just ok. The enchiladas and taco were very salty. The taco still tasted good despite the saltiness. I was not feeling the enchiladas though. The rice tasted very good, but it's difficult to mess up rice. They have a nice menu of happy hour drinks that are only $6. I had the house margarita on the rocks. (Frozen is also an option) It was decent, but I've had much better. I didn't find it to be too strong, but it also didn't taste like juice; a nice balance. I probably won't be back, but it wasn't so bad that I'd tell anyone else to stay away. You may like it more than I did.

Sara T.

Yelp
Not sure why this place has received recent negative reviews. I thought the food and service were great! Happy to support and acknowledge good Mexican food outside of the chain establishments such as El Tiempo or Lupe's. Although those are good, this independently owned neighborhood spot is pretty good! Will be returning and recommend trying if you're in the Heights area. Cheers!

Haley M.

Yelp
I came here for Cinco de Mayo with my friend that was visiting out of town. Luckily, we did not have to wait for a table and were seated immediately. It's a super cute place, obviously very busy on that day, so it was incredibly loud. However, the food was absolutely delicious and the drinks were pretty good too. The parking is pretty bad but if you're lucky, you can park pretty close or just Uber. I'd definitely go back. The only thing was the margaritas were a bit pricey but I feel like everything else was 10/10.

John R.

Yelp
It has been a few years since I had been here so I decided to try their breakfast. I had the Juevos Mexicanos with bacon. Nothing to write home about and I had to send the bacon back because it was half cooked. It ended up costing me over double what I pay at my go to Mexican breakfast spot in Spring Branch and the food wasn't even as good. Won't be back!

Kristin M.

Yelp
Best tamales I've had!! Mostly meat and perfect amount of masa. I absolutely love their warm salsa--it's unique and delicious.

Vicki G.

Yelp
It has been quite a while since my last visit, and they seem to have gentrified their appearance. It was also really busy. I didn't remember outdoor seating, but I may have missed it. But onward to the review: I know that QR code menus became a "thing" during the pandemic, when they were considered safer and we were wiping everything down all the time and letting packages "age" before opening. But now, I resent having to use a QR code menu, and that is necessary here. They do rather push the cocktails, which we did not have. The coffee was surprisingly good. We specifically went for Mexican breakfast, and the menu is rather limited. My husband said his Huevos Rancheros with Bacon was okay. If you order Migas with Scrambled Eggs, be aware that these may be far different than migas you have ordered elsewhere. These are actual crispy (perhaps refried? because they were greasy) tortilla chips, with some scrambled eggs and cheese, and perhaps another layer of the same. In all migas I've ever eaten, the eggs and tortillas were more incorporated together. I don't remember their migas being like this when I ate here before, but perhaps I forgot. The beans and potatoes were good. The tortillas tasted homemade, but they could have cooked longer -- there were no tell-tale browned spots. I'll be looking for someplace with a broader breakfast menu -- preferably with machacado -- and perhaps more authenticity.

Frank G.

Yelp
This place was packed. The parking is a pain but we'll worth it. We had fajitas, chili replenish and enchiladas and they were all great. Our service was very helpful and managed a room full of drinkers well lol. If you want someplace quiet this isn't it. This place is lively and energized. Blame the drinks.

Shekkola G.

Yelp
Ww celebrated by son-in-law's birthday here. We planned ahead by ordering 12 pork tamales. Those were the best tamales we had ever tasted! The rest of the food was mouth watering, too. And our server was never far away. I highly recommend Alma!

Chris G.

Yelp
Always great service and great food. Service, food, and ambience.. we've had a great time. Thank you Maria.

Jeepers C.

Yelp
After 11 years enjoying this place, it all came to an end. I've always enjoyed the food and service. 2 times a week at least. Tonight after a change to their menu, and then a bad recommendation from the waiter, I had a very greasy soggy meal. The waiter agreed with me. Couldn't eat it. I asked for a taco. I got a charge for everything. I contested. I still paid. Bye bye

Robert A.

Yelp
The service was not great even thou they were not busy. The drinks and the food was not great, the drinks are basically sour lemonade no taste of alcohol. The ambiance was not genuine for a Mexican food restaurant. I will definitely not be returning, prices are too high for the quality of food and drinks you get.

Jessica G.

Yelp
This is always my go to for Tex Mex enchiladas specifically! It always hits the spot. Delicious food and drinks. I always stop by every few weeks to buy a few bottles of their Michelada/Bloody Mary mix. It is the best I've ever tasted. Try it yourself you will not regret it!

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
We loved sitting on the porch on a beautiful Houston night. Burrito is massive and a great deal, Brussels taco was fun to try. Enchiladas yummy, street tacos good, queso on par with expected. We've had their fajitas catered in the past and that's the real winner, but branched out this time.

Becky G.

Yelp
Just picked up our order of pastor tacos and quesadillas. We asked for no onions on the pastor tacos and got onions. We also paid for extra lime and didn't even get one lime. When I called to let them know they messed up the order, Cesar offered us a $5 "store credit" to make up for the $15 tacos that we weren't going to eat and the limes we never got. Obviously that's a no from me, dawg. I told him we had to go find dinner somewhere else now, and not only were we out the $ for the tacos, but have to buy dinner elsewhere. THEN, he tells me that he packed up the order himself, and there were no onions on the tacos. He straight called me a liar. I told him I'd email him a picture and he said no. So here we are...What are those, Cesar? WHAT ARE THOOOOOSE?!?! Lmk.

Michael B.

Yelp
Serving size of fajitas is on the smaller side but all the food I've had here is delicious.

Ray V.

Yelp
Great food and Margaritas. Delicious Mexican tacos. I would definitely recommend it. Parking is a bit small but usually isn't a problem now with COVID. It's not too crowded.

Mickey C.

Yelp
One of my favorite places for enchiladas! They are known for the cheese enchiladas and that's normally something I don't order at other Mexican restaurants but they are good here! You also got a order the queso! However it does run a little runny but it's still very flavorful! Their margaritas are pretty strong though and I think that is a must if you're coming here! The atmosphere is very low-key family friendly and I think it's a great place to go on a date! The Staff is fast and friendly And the food is also fast and very good! The parking however it's a little tricky and I would definitely drive in slower because The parking is kind of narrow but it is doable even with a truck!

John R.

Yelp
Not a good experience!! When we arrived there no tables, so we were sent to the bar. We ordered our drinks and prepared to wait for our table. Then the manager told us we couldn't wait at the bar unless we ate at the bar, but we could wait outside in the 100+ temperature. No one ever took our places at the bar!! When our table was ready we were seated and waited for service and waited for service. Once we ordered, we waited almost an hour for our food which was nothing special the beef was so tough we could not hardly cut it with a knife. It was so loud we couldn't even talk upon ourselves. Twice my Apple watch notified me of it being so loud that my hearing could be damaged!! There was nothing special here.

Roger C.

Yelp
I will preface this by saying - We went to AL around 9:20(ish)pm on a Thursday, with the mindset that it will be a rushed meal seeing as they closed at 10. But, from looking around the room, we were the last table to come in, but the 1st to leave... Not sure if we were the only table being rushed, or maybe no one else could take the hint... But I for sure got the hint that they were closing soon and wanted people to hurry. Notwithstanding the rush, the servers were attentive, the chips and salsa were free (every good Mexican restaurant needs this) the food was quick/good, and the drinks were on point. I will say the chicken tortilla soup was not what I expected, but very delicious. It was more soupy if that makes sense, but they gave you an extra plate of fixings, so you can change it to taste. I decided to just dump it all in. The torta was so big, I had to take half to-go, but it was great the next day also. Will for sure be back.

Kiera M.

Yelp
Food is less than mediocre. Waiter came to the table with salsa spilled on his hand, horchata was watered down and taco meat wasn't real beef. Would not recommend at all.

Clay C.

Yelp
Came to alma for the first time recently and was impressed mostly but their were some major drawbacks. The parking here leaves alot to be desired. I couldn't find a spot for 5 minutes and decided make my own parking spot in the back. The salsa, chips and queso were very good. My wife loved the combo plate she got especially the ground beef taco. The cheese enchiladas were stellar imo. I got the beef fajitas which although were very good, were $28 dollars. The serving was maybe 8oz enough for 3 small tacos. But the singular Al a cart fajita tacos are $4.75, im not sure how that checks out. I'll definitely be back to try more bc I can see the potential.

Edelyn C.

Yelp
Love this cute, little place! Great set up, has kind of that Mexican brunch feel to it with the mixture of decor. The staff seems very attentive, as well. It's definitely a spot for GREAT MARGS during happy hour - I even grabbed the large margarita for just $10, quite tasty and absolutely hits the spot. Their guac concoction is pretty great with their salsa, which I think is mixed with something different. As for my main course, I went with the soup and a side of rice that I poured in the big bowl! Extremely flavorful with a bit of a kick; had a lot of chicken chunks, veggies, avocado, etc. I couldn't even finish it and had it again the next night. Great reheat value!

Beth J.

Yelp
Love the enchiladas, tacos al carbon, and look for to avocado toast fro brunch! Excellent service and super attentive waiters!

Danny D.

Yelp
Go to Mexican place in the heights. Good service, good food, good price, good drinks. Every time I've been has been a good experience.
