We first met Robert over Christmas at Alma Rosa’s downtown tasting room, where his warmth and knowledge immediately stood out. During that visit, he invited us to experience the vineyards, and it became one of the most memorable wine experiences we have ever had.
A few days prior to our reservation, Robert personally reached out to us and re introduced himself. He let us know he would be our host, walked us through how the day would go, and took the time to answer every question we had. We have never had a winery reach out ahead of time like that. It immediately set the tone and showed a level of care and professionalism that is rare. This was truly top level customer service.
One challenge with Santa Barbara wine country is that many tasting room experiences lack true depth. Often, staff have limited knowledge of winemaking, vineyard operations, or the broader history of wine and other wine regions. That was absolutely not the case here. Robert’s knowledge was exceptional. He explained how the Sta Rita Hills compare to Burgundy, France, and how the growing conditions are remarkably similar. Throughout the tour, we learned so much about Richard, the founder of Alma Rosa, Samra, the award winning winemaker, and Bob, the owner who is deeply committed to preserving the land and farming sustainably. Understanding the people, the land, and the global context behind the wine made the experience even more meaningful.
The vineyard tour itself was outstanding, especially tasting the wines while standing among the very vines they came from. Drinking the wines in the vineyard created a deeper connection to the land and a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship behind each bottle. It felt intimate, thoughtful, and elegant.
When we returned to the ranch house built in 1913, the experience came full circle. It was clear that Robert leads an incredible team. The way the staff worked together, welcomed guests, and carried themselves reflected strong leadership and pride in what they do.
Robert also served in the Army, and those values clearly show in his work. His discipline, respect, leadership, and attention to detail elevate the entire experience. He leads with integrity and purpose, and it makes a real difference.
If you are visiting the Santa Rita Hills, Alma Rosa is a must. Tasting wines in the vineyard and spending time at the historic ranch with Robert is a truly special experience and one we will never forget.
Robert, if you are reading this, thank you for an unforgettable experience. Go Rams! Go Dodgers!
